International peace conference begins in Istanbul

Scholars from Turkey, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, central Asia convene to discuss ‘way forward for peace, progress’

ISTANBUL, FEB 16 – A two-day international peace conference began in Istanbul on Tuesday with speakers from several countries including Turkey, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan.

The conference titled Turkey, Pakistan and Central Asia: Partnership for Peace is co-hosted by Turkey’s Center for Diplomatic Affairs and Political Studies (DIPAM) in partnership with Pakistan’s Lahore Center for Peace Research (LCPR).

“We have to learn from each other to be partners in peace,” said Tolga Sakman, chairman of DIPAM.

Sakman called for cooperation at all levels among Turkey, Pakistan, and the Central Asian nations including in cultural, economic, political and academic areas.

Referring to Kashmir, Nagorno-Karabakh, and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, he said shared principles of Turkey, Pakistan and friendly countries in Central Asia “are going to make great contributions in the new era” of the world order.

“Hopefully, this conference acts as a platform where different visions will be shared and worked upon,” he added.

Holding our third conference in Turkey “shows the love and respect Pakistan has for this great country, Turkey,” Nazir Hussain, the executive director of the LCPR, told the conference which is being held amid strict COVID-19 measures.

Hussain, who is a former Pakistan foreign service diplomat, said the aim of the conference is to “promote research and build peace between cultures, societies and nations.”

“The region of Central Asia is very close to Pakistan as it is close to Turkey,” he said, calling it “greater Central Asia.” “We, as Pakistan, are very much part of it and want to work together in search of peace and prosperity,” he insisted.

Referring to Afghanistan, he said the country has seen no peace for over 40 years. “It has resulted in collateral damage and Pakistan has suffered the loss of 70,000 civilians and over 10,000 military officials.”

“Pakistan-Turkey relationship is not new; Muslims from South Asia always supported the great Ottomans and so is the case with modern-day Turkey,” he stated.

He recalled the travel of scholars coming from Central Asia to present-day Pakistan and the region.

“There is an inspiration from the region and we want to make an effort in this way for peace and progress,” he added.

Hussain suggested increased people-to-people contacts and said: “We need a collective effort to put the region together.”

Report: South Africa asks Indian maker of Astrazeneca vaccine to take back one million doses

The South African government has asked drugmaker Serum Institute of India (SII) to take back the one million doses of the AstraZeneca-Oxford Covid-19 vaccines it had sent in early February, the Economic Times reported on Tuesday, a week after the country suspended the use of the shot after preliminary studies suggested limited effectiveness against the more contagious local variant of the virus.

South Africa received one million doses of the license-made AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine last week and another 500,000 were set to arrive in the next few weeks.

South Africa’s health minister previously noted that the vaccines which arrived from India have an expiry date in April and had asked SII to swap them out for doses with later expiry dates.

But after the vaccines roll out was halted last week, the minister said the government may sell the doses to other nations.

The country, which has yet to begin its vaccination program, will begin vaccinating health workers with the Johnson & Johnson single dose shot as part of an “implementation study” with researchers, although a date for the rollout has not yet been set.

The Economic Times report cited officials aware of the development, however, SII has not yet commented on the issue.

KEY BACKGROUND

Last week, South Africa halted plans to roll out the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine after a preliminary study suggested that the shot provides “minimal protection” against mild disease from the more contagious variant of the virus spreading in the country. This decision was made despite the World Health Organization giving emergency approval to the shot allowing it to be rolled out in several poorer nations. The AstraZeneca-Oxford shot is currently being rolled out in large scale across several countries including the U.K., India and it has also been approved for emergency use by the Australian government.

TANGENT

SII, the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer, has emerged as a key supplier of the AstraZeneca shot around the world. Even the U.K., which is home to AstraZeneca, is reportedly auditing SII’s sites for future orders of the vaccine amid a crunch in supplies. Last year, SII inked a deal with AstraZeneca to manufacture a billion doses of the Oxford vaccine for India and lower- and middle-income countries during the pandemic and sell it at the cost of production. The firm has a similar license manufacturing deal for Novavax’s vaccine candidate and is also developing its own vaccine.

The Next IPhone Might Have An Always-On Display

For quite a while there have been numerous rumors about the features of the 2021 iPhone lineup. According to AppleInsider, Max Weinbach and ‘EverythingApplePro’ shared a few spoilers in a video regarding what could possibly be the next-gen iPhone including the feature of an always-on display.

The next-gen iPhone is said to imitate the lock screen and deliver a set of limited information such as notifications, messages number, and more. Moreover, only icons of the battery and clock would be present consistently. This feature is quite similar to the Android smartphone that shows notifications and battery level when the device is on sleep mode.

Max has further added rumors that the next-gen will have an upgraded ultra-wide camera with better low-light performance and a portrait video mode, similar to the Samsung Galaxy S21. The next-gen will also have stronger MagSafe magnets as well which will keep the user’s wallet add-on intact with the iPhone.

The design of the next-gen iPhone is said to remain constant apart from a grippier back on the Pro versions of the phone. When it comes to the front of the phone, it is expected that the phone will have a less intrusive notch for the Face ID and might feature an in-display fingerprint reader.

However, these rumors told by Max Weinbach do not reveal how the final product will officially look like but there will be some intuitive features that will differentiate it from the iPhone 12.

In A First, Pakistan Unveils New Rules To Allow Medical Visas

ISLAMABAD, FEB 16 – The Pakistan government has for the first time introduced the medical visa category in its revised visa policy, making it easier for people to enter Pakistan for health-related emergencies, the ministry of interior has said.

According to a letter issued by the interior ministry to the Director-General of Immigration and Passports, the federal cabinet approved new changes to the visa policy on Feb 2. The letter was published by Pakistani media on Monday.

Interior ministry spokesperson Zafaryab Khan told Pakistan’s Dawn newspaper the medical visa category had been introduced for the first time.
“Pak Missions abroad will issue Short Term Medical Visa to cater emergencies (Visa Type: Single Entry/Individual/Family/Attendant) … with duration up to 3 months within a stipulated timeframe of 48 hours subject to submission of requite documents by the applicant,” the interior ministry letter said, adding that security clearance would not be required for short term visas.

For extended term medical visas of up to one year, the ministry of interior would approve them within 30 days after clearance from security agencies.

“Case shall be assumed as approved in case agencies response is not received within specified time,” the interior ministry document said.
The interior ministry said single-entry work visas for up to three months would be approved within 48 hours of the application’s submission.

Security clearance would not be required but intelligence agencies would be informed, according to the document. Security clearance would, however, be needed if an individual who had been issued a single-entry work visa sought an extension.

ICCI calls for withdrawal of power tariff hike to save businesses

DNA

ISLAMABAD, FEB 16: The Islamabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ICCI) has called upon the government to withdraw the recent hike of Rs.1.95 per unit in electricity across the board as it would put additional burden of around Rs.200 billion on consumers, further escalate the cost of production and push up inflation leading to more harmful consequences for the overall economy.

Sardar Yasir Ilyas Khan, President, Islamabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry said that Pakistan needed to boost exports to get rid of foreign debt burden and attain sustainable economic growth, however, the repeated increase in power tariffs would increase cost of doing business and make Pakistani products more uncompetitive in the international market leading to further decline in business activities and exports. He said that electricity was a major input for many SMEs and large scale manufacturing units, therefore, the hike in power tariff would hurt their business significantly that would damage our economy.

Sardar Yasir Ilyas Khan said that electricity cost in Pakistan was already considered highest in the region due to which it was difficult for our industry to compete effectively with regional competitors. He said that the business community of the entire country had been urging the government since long to focus on cheap energy sources to bring down the cost of doing business, but their calls have not been given due consideration as yet. He said that already the people including the public sector employees were agitating against high inflation and it has badly squeezed their purchasing power and made their lives miserable, therefore, further increase in electricity prices will further raise inflation, which could result into massive social unrest. He said that the recent hike would also affect lifeline consumers as they have not been spared from this unwise decision.

Fatma Azim Senior Vice President and Abdul Rehman Khan Vice President ICCI said that the businesses were still struggling for survival due to the impact of Covid-19 pandemic and in these difficult circumstances, they needed more relief measures from the government for revival and growth. However, instead of providing them any relief, the government was taking measures that would create more problems for them. They said that the Prime Minister had announced a package of discounted tariffs for SMEs in November 2020 till June 2021, however, the repeated increase in electricity & gas tariffs and oil prices would thwart the government’s efforts for reducing the production cost for SMEs and the industrial sector. He urged that the government should reconsider its decision and withdraw the hike in electricity tariff to save businesses and the general public from further difficulties.

Senate 2021: PTI challenges nomination papers of PPP’s Yousaf Raza Gillani

ISLAMABAD : Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has challenged the acceptance of nomination papers of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) central leader and former premier Yousaf Raza Gillani for Senate elections.

PTI’s Fareed Rehman alleged that Yousaf Raza Gillani has concealed the facts in the nomination papers. He stated that Gillani does not meet the criteria of Article 62 and he did not mention being a convicted person in his nomination papers.

Fareed Rehman sought rejection of Yousaf Raza Gillani’s nomination papers for the Senate polls.
Earlier on February 13, Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) had announced to support Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) candidate Gillani in Senate elections.

The decision was taken after a meeting between PML-N senior vice-president Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Gillani to hold consultations to field a joint candidate of Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM).

Two former premiers including Raja Pervez Ashraf and Shahid Khaqan Abbasi acted as proponent and seconder in the candidate’s paper.

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s passport to expire today

ISLAMABAD : Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s passport will expire today (Tuesday) with Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed saying that the document cannot be renewed since the PML-N supremo’s name is on the no-fly list.

“If Nawaz Sharif wants to return to Pakistan, he will not be stopped,” said Sheikh Rasheed during a news conference. “However, a person whose name is on the Exit-Control List (ECL) can neither be issued a new passport nor can his existing one be renewed.”

The interior minister said that if the former prime minister wanted to return to the country, the government can issue him a permission within 72 hours.

He said that Sharif’s passport will expired at midnight tonight, criticising the former prime minister for taking “unfair advantage” of the high court’s decision to let him seek medical treatment abroad.

Rasheed said that Sharif had ‘deceived’ everyone by claiming that he needed to go abroad for medical treatment but had not sought it.

The Awami Muslim League chief said that all he could do about the entire matter is to issue the PML-N leader travel documents. “That is all I can do,” he said.

The interior minister, however, admitted that he was among those in the cabinet who voted in favour of letting Sharif go abroad to seek medical treatment.

“I won’t lie, I was among those who voted for him to be allowed to fly abroad,” he said. “

Speaking on the upcoming Senate elections, the interior minister said that there will be “no surprise” in the elections of the upper house, adding that Prime Minister Imran Khan will succeed in the polls.

Nawaz Sharif and his extradition from UK

The government has already approached UK authorities to extradite Nawaz Sharif. Special Assistant to PM Imran Khan on Accountability Shahzad Akbar had said earlier that it is up to the British government to decide on the extradition of the former premier.

The PML-N supremo was granted an eight-week bail on medical grounds in October 2019 and a month later, he was allowed to travel abroad for treatment for four weeks. The government maintains that Nawaz was permitted on condition that he would share details of the medical treatment which he didn’t opt for.

It may be added here that the deposed premier has been declared a proclaimed offender by the Islamabad High Court and an accountability court for failing to appear before the bench.

Adviser to Prime Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Babar Awan had said a few months ago that Nawaz’s stay in London would become illegal after his passport expires.

The only option for the PML-N supremo, after his passport expires, would be to come back to Pakistan and appear in court to face the cases against him, Awan had said.

Can Nawaz Sharif stay in UK after his passport expires?

A leading London immigration law firm spoke to Geo News earlier, saying that there are several options for the former premier to continue living in London even when his passport has expired, cancelled or revoked by the Pakistan government.

Hateem Ali, head of immigration at the leading London law firm GSC Solicitors LLP, had said former PM Nawaz Sharif can continue staying in London when and if his passport is cancelled – without claiming asylum.

The UK Home Office in any event allows those on medical visas normally up to 18 months on the grounds that he is receiving treatment in the UK, he had said.

Ali had said that Nawaz can “potentially extend this even further depending on the nature of the treatment and with the current global pandemic the UK immigration authorities can also take this into consideration and grant further extensions of stay if necessary”.

The immigration law expert had said: “Sharif could claim asylum potentially if he wants to, although it is unlikely that he would do so. He has the ability to claim statelessness (assuming he has no other nationality) if his citizenship has been revoked and he is left with no other nationality.”

The Pakistan government, however, may simply refuse to renew Nawaz’s passport rather than revoke his citizenship, Ali explained, adding that in this type of situation, it would be on Nawaz to prove to the Home Office that his citizenship has effectively been revoked.

He said another option for Nawaz is to apply for formal residence – from within the UK – in a new visa category either as an investor or any other business/employment option.

When you make such an application there is usually a check if there are any other criminal cases anywhere in the world, he said. This may create issues for Nawaz, but the UK authorities can use their discretion in such situations and generally, as long as Nawaz has a clean record in the UK, there are several options for him.
