Bollywood Actress Zarina Wahab is Full of Praise for Ahsan Khan’s Performance in “Qayamat”

Well, it’s been said for so long, it has sort of become a cliché. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t true. While Bollywood dominates in Pakistan when it comes to films, on the smaller screen, there is no competitor of Pakistani dramas.

The latest proof of it comes from famed Bollywood actress Zarina Wahab’s high praise for Ahsan Khan. The veteran actress who has been working for more than 30 years now, sent a personal message to the actor for his portrayal of Rashid in 7th Sky’s ’Qayamat’.

“As Rashid you are too much… excellent work,” she wrote.

In recent years, ZarinaWahab has been part of hit films like My Name is Khan, Dil Dhadakne Do and Agneepath, working with mega stars like Shahrukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar among others. So coming from a contemporary artist like her, this is a matter of great satisfaction for Ahsan Khan as an actor. He has earned the respect of his fellow performers. That would mean a world to him.

Qayamat has been a hit drama and 7th Sky has garnered a lot of praise for their project. The enigmatic duo, Abdullah Kadwani and Asad Qureshi have done it again, so it’s no surprise that it has fan across the Radcliffe line as well.

Research on household debts has a critical role to play for evidence-based policies: Experts

DNA

ISLAMABAD, FEB 16 – The research on household debts and indebtedness in Pakistan could play a critical role in envisaging evidence-based policies and decision-making. The experts from financial and economic sectors said this while sharing their views with the participants of the webinar and launch of study ‘Household debt and indebtedness in Pakistan: estimates and implications,’ organized by the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI), here Tuesday.

Macroeconomist and former Economic Policy Advisor Federal SDGs Unit Planning Commission, Dr Ali Kemal, while commenting on the study, said that repaying debt in Pakistan has always been a pertinent issue.  He highlighted that higher incid ence of borrowing in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa that is indicated in the report may suggest a better social capital in the province. He added further that in view of the relation between poverty and indebtedness in the country, a detailed based study on the issue is the need of hour for evidence-based policies.

Dr Sajid Amin, Research Fellow at SDPI, earlier, shared his research with the participants on household debt and indebtedness for Pakistan over the last two decade and discussed their implications for people and economy. He explained that in Pakistan a literatu re on household debt and indebtedness is non existing and thus, there is no data on the size of household of debt and indebtedness.

While presenting the findings of his study, he informed the audience that one fifth of household in Pakistan were in debt in 2018-19. He added further that in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, more than half population was under debt. The poorest 20% of society borrow 2.45 times more than richest 20%. He suggested that BISP, particularly EHSAAS programme, must design targeted interventions for poorest households who are trapped in debt.  The ann ual size of household debt in Pakistan over the last 20 years has increased more than nine times, from Rs. 62 billion in 1988 to Rs. 601 billion in 2018, he added.

“The total stock of household debt in 2018-19 was Rs. 1162 billion,” Dr Amin while explaining that about 85% to 95% of it was borrowed from informal sector. He suggested that SBP must integrate data on household indebtedness into its database and that financial inclusion strategy of the bank must introduce debt literacy to promote responsible borrowing. Besides, he said, the impact of informal borrowing on effectiveness of monetary policy, inequality and poverty needs to be explored in Pakistan.

Mr Fida Hussain, Additional Director, Monetary Policy Department SBP, termed the study as a first in-depth research on household debt and indebtedness in country. He said that the study will help the policy makers to cater all these aspects of the household debt and particularly indebtedness. The digitization of the financial services, he said, will provide an opportunity to expand and enhance the financial inclusion of the people.

Dr Vaqar Ahmed, Joint Executive Director, SDPI, while moderating the session, viewed that the main aim of discussion around the topic was to educate people about this emerging issue related to the household debt and indebtedness. Dr Fareeha Armughan, Associate Research Fellow SDPI, on the occasion emphasized that in rural segment the social, psychological, and religious factors are some of the impediments to the borrowing from formal channel and encourages the informal channels of borrowing.=DNA

Call made for improved access to harassment reporting mechanism at educational institutions

KARACHI, FEB 16: It is imperative that we create safe spaces for everyone, especially for women and girls, to report incidents of harassment or abuse, without any fear of retaliation or retribution, and this can only happen if we inculcate the seeds of awareness in the future leaders of Pakistan towards a just world free from violence with equal opportunities for all regardless of their gender identity, said Shahnawaz Ali, Country Director of Oxfam in Pakistan.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of Oxfam in Pakistan’s project, Ending Violence Against Women (EVAW) through Art and Edutainment, supported by the Australian High Commission, he talked about how the project relied on art and edutainment to engage youth from colleges and universities, drawing attention towards gender-based violence as a serious human rights violation.

The project helped open discourse on issues that limit women and girls to participate in public life and achieve their full potential.  Using art and edutainment as an engaging medium, Oxfam took numerous initiatives to draw attention towards gender-based violence as a serious human rights violation.

‘Australia commends the strides taken in Pakistan to strengthen the protections for women against harassment in educational institutions. The safe and equal participation of women in all spheres of life benefits the economy and society. Australia is proud to partner with Oxfam in Pakistan to promote the message that harassment is not inevitable, it is not acceptable, and it is preventable. This digital campaign reached more than 5 million people across the country.

It also catalysed collaboration between Oxfam and the Higher Education Commission (HEC) to implement anti-harassment strategies at universities. We must work with all members of society, including men, educators, employers and community influencers to drive change’, said the Australian Deputy High Commissioner, Ms Joanne Frederiksen while addressing the audience. Under the project, Oxfam has also signed MoUs with twenty universities in Karachi, under which they have conducted sensitisation/training sessions and seminars, supported the creation of anti-harassment committees, built the capacity of anti-harassment committee members, set up complaint boxes and established a helpline for reporting cases of abuse and harassment in compliance with the HEC Anti-Sexual Harassment policy.

During 16 Days of Activism, Oxfam produced and disseminated animated videos on addressing and changing negative social norms under the campaign tagline, “Janay Na Du”. The videos highlighted the menace of the cyber, workplace and public harassment and the abuse women and girls face along with raising the issue of early child marriages. The videos shared how individuals can take preventive measures and report such crimes. The campaign accumulated a reach of 120 million on national and cable television channels, social media and radio.

Speaking at the event, Shela Raza, Minister for Women Development Sindh said that it is incredibly important that we create awareness about existing laws and reporting mechanisms that protect women and girls from gender-based violence, especially the 1094 helpline set up by Sindh Government to register complaints against domestic violence and gender discrimination.  She invited all educational institutions to share their opinions and feedback so that safe spaces for women and girls can be established to pursue their dreams.

The closing ceremony provided a platform for distinguished members of the Parliament, policymakers, academia, legislators, Government officials and the media to address the rising incidents of harassment and abuse at educational institutions.

A learning review session amongst the participants discussed Oxfam’s intervention to build universities’ capacity to improve management of gender-based violence and harassment cases and what can be done in the future to ensure students and staff can report an incident without fear of retribution.
