South Africa’s Du Plessis announces retirement from Test cricket

Karachi : South Africa’s veteran batter Faf du Plessis has decided to announce retirement from Test cricket.

The 36-year-old Du Plessis confirmed his decision through an Instagram post and wrote. “My heart is clear and the time is right to walk into a new chapter.”

Former Proteas captain started his Test career back in 2012 at Adelaide against Australia where he made headlines with an emphatic match-saving inning in fourth innings of unbeaten 110 off 376 balls.

He went on to appear in 69 Tests for his country and scored 4163 runs at an average of 40.02, involving 10 centuries and 21 fifties.

“If someone had told me 15 years ago that I would play 69 Test matches for South Africa and captain the side, I wouldn’t have believed them. I stand in a place of utmost gratitude for a Test career full of blessings bestowed on me,” he added.

Du Plessis has decided make the shortest format his priority for now as 2021 and 2022 are the T20 World Cup years.

“The next two years are T20 WC years. Because of this, my focus is shifting to this format and I want to play as much of it as possible around the world so that I can be the best player I can possibly be.”

“I strongly believe that I have a lot to offer to the Proteas in this format. This does not mean that ODI cricket is no longer in the plans. I am just making T20 cricket the priority in the short-term,” he wrote.

Note, Du Plessis last appeared in Test cricket recently in the second Test against Pakistan in Rawalpindi.

Melbourne lifts lockdown, but questions remain over return of tennis fans

Melbourne, Feb 17  : Stay-at-home orders will be lifted for six million residents of Australia’s second-most populous state late Wednesday, although it was unclear if the Australian Open tennis tournament could welcome back fans in Melbourne.

A snap five-day lockdown had been ordered for Victoria state Friday after a small outbreak of the more infectious UK coronavirus variant prompted fears Australia’s successful battle to contain the pandemic could be undone.

The virus cluster linked to a hotel quarantining travellers returned from overseas has grown to 19 people, but with no new cases reported Wednesday authorities said the lockdown would be lifted at 11.59 pm as planned.

However, it was unclear if the year’s first tennis Grand Slam — which started three weeks late to allow international players to quarantine — would be allowed to welcome socially distanced fans as the final rounds get underway in Melbourne.

Tickets went on sale for Thursday’s matches, but there was no formal announcement from organisers.

Premier Daniel Andrews said numbers at large public events would be capped, but further examination of organiser plans to keep attendees safe was required.

“They will be on a case-by-case basis and it is not a simple process we go through quite an exhaustive process to make sure that those events are viable and can happen but are safe,” he said.

Andrews said further announcements on events would be made later Wednesday.

Abdul Hafeez Sheikh will easily win Senate polls: Fawad Chaudhry

ISLAMABAD : Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry has said on Wednesday that Finance Minister Abdul Hafeez Sheikh will easily bag his election seat on March 3.

Dr Aamir Liaquat Hussain is the apple of our eyes, will convince him to vote for Abdul Hafeez Sheikh in the upcoming Senate polls, Fawad Chaudhry said.

The minister said that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has awarded a majority of Senate election tickets to the old party workers. Answering a query about holding Senate polls via open ballot, Chaudhry said that according to the legal situation, the elections should be held through a show of hand.
Fawad said that he is clueless that why the Pakistan People’s Party is ending the political career of former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.

Earlier this week, the ruling party’s MNA from Karachi, Dr Aamir Liaquat Hussian had announced not to vote for Abdul Hafeez Sheikh in the upcoming Senate polls, citing he is not a member of the party.

According to the Election Commission of Pakistan, 170 candidates have submitted their nomination papers for contesting the election on Senate vacant seats.

It is to be mentioned here that Senate polls are scheduled to take place on March 3.

Samjhauta Express Bombing Revisited

Sajjad Shaukat

On the midnight of 18-19 February 2007, India-Pakistan Samjhauta Express train was bombed in which 68 people were killed, including at least 42 Pakistanis who were among the victims of the Hindu terrorist attack.

A Hindu extremist Sadhu Aseemanand Swami, alias Naba Kumar Das, a leader of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) had confessed that he was involved in several bombings incidents. He also claimed to have been a part of the Samjhauta Express blast.

In fact, ideology of Hindutva (Hindu nationalism) prevails in every field at the cost of other minority groups. It is even supported by Indian defense forces secretly. This could be judged from the incident, when on April 6, 2008 in the house of Bajrang Dal fundamentalists in Nanded, a bomb went off. The investigation proved that these militants were found in the bomb-making and attack on a mosque in Parbhani in 2003. Maharashtra’s Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS)  arrested a serving Lt. Col. Srikant Purohit along with other army officials, indicating that they were helping in training the Hindu terrorists, providing them with the military-grade explosive RDX, used in the Malegaon bombings and terrorist attacks in other Indian cities. ATS further disclosed that Lt. Col. Purohit confessed that in 2007, he was involved in bombing of the Samjhauta express.

India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) was convinced that Swami Aseemanand, a Hindu right-wing leader was directly involved in the Samjhauta Express blast. Sources in NIA further pointed out that besides Lt. Col. Purohit, other Indian army officials were also behind that train-bombing. In this regard, a court in Panchkula, Haryana had recorded Aseemanand’s statement which confirmed the NIA inquiry.

His earlier admission was recorded in the Mecca Masjid case, which was being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Aseemanand stuck to his confession that Hindutva radicals were behind the bomb attack on the Samjhauta Express—namely Ramji Kaisangra, Sandeep Dange, Amit and Sunil Joshi as the key plotters in that terror attack.

In the Samjhauta Express case, the probe team had found that the bomb used in the train was kept in a suitcase which was bought from a shop of Indore’s Kothari Market. The suitcase had cloth covers stitched by an Indian local tailor.

Notably, Dr. J C Batra, who is a senior advocate at the Supreme Court of India, was asked to give opinion on Aseemanand’s admission. He appeared very defensive and as usual accused Pakistan’s primary intelligence agency ISI. He further said that Swami’s statement did not have much legal value as circumstantial evidence is also needed, while adding that RSS was being wrongly implicated. In this respect, a Pakistani parliamentarian, who was accompanying him, later stated that Mr. J C Batra who was under pressure, told that the Indian Army was involved in this case and there “are efforts to shield it from getting exposed.”

However, Swami Aseemanand also admitted in the court that several RSS preachers were directly involved in planning, financing and executing Malegaon, Samjhauta Express, Ajmer and Mecca Masjid blasts, while various leaders of Hindu communal organizations, including Bajrang Dal, Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Abhinav Bharat, Jai Vande Matram and Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram were also behind these blasts.

Notably, in various tapes, LT. Col Purohit said, “We are all on the same plane, Hindu Rashtra” (Nation). He even claimed that Gen. J J Singh is “with us”. (Former Army Chief). Significantly, Purohit mentioned that “one of our own captain had visited Israel”, and demanded “continuous supply of arms, training, an office with a saffron flag in Tel Aviv. The Israelis, he added, gave “a very positive response.”

In this connection, exposing the nexus between BJP and RSS, the then Indian Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde revealed on January 20, 2013 that organized training camps run by the fundamentalist parties, RSS and BJP were promoting Hindu Terrorism. He also elaborated that these extremist parties were behind the Samjhauta Express, Meccca Masjid and Malegaon blasts. He added, “We will have to think about it (Saffron terrorism) seriously…Hindu extremist parties BJP and RSS were involved many times in Hindu Muslim violence in India, especially Gujarat and Babri masjid incident.”

The then India’s External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid endorsed Shinde’s statement, stating that it was based on facts.

While, India has always accused ISI of these terrorist assaults, but it is quite silent over Hindutva-terror which has obtained a new face, under the Indian fanatic Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as Indian RAW, country’s high officials and fundamentalist parties have co-relationship.

Despite the admission of Swami Aseemanand, instead of taking action against the culprits of the Samjhauta Express bombing, the Punjab and Haryana High Court of India had accepted the bail of Swami Aseemanand after the covert interference of the Modi-led authorities who changed the investigations in this respect in order to weaken the case.

And India’s special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Haryana state on March 20, 2019 acquitted four individuals accused in the Samjhauta Express bombing case.

In this context, Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesperson Dr. Mohammad Faisa and a Foreign statement had condemned the ruling of the court by remarking: “The acquittal of the four accused, including Swami Aseemanand makes a travesty of justice…exposes the sham credibility of Indian Courts…it also belies the rampant Indian hypocrisy where India reflexively levels allegations of terrorism against Pakistan, while protecting with impunity terrorists who had publicly confessed to their odious crimes.”
