  • Initiative in support of COVAX facility for equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines

Dubai, FEB 17: Emirates SkyCargo has signed an agreement with UNICEF to prioritise the transport of COVID-19 vaccines, essential medicines, medical devices and other critical supplies to help fight the COVID-19 pandemic. The announcement is the latest in a series of measures undertaken by the freight division of Emirates to support global communities in recovering from the devastating impact of COVID-19.

Watch a video announcing Emirates SkyCargo’s participation in UNICEF’s initiative.

The Humanitarian Airfreight Initiative spearheaded by UNICEF brings together a number of partners collectively capable of distributing essential supplies to more than 100 markets in support of the COVAX Facility, the global effort aimed at equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines. UNICEF’s Humanitarian Airfreight Initiative will also act as a blueprint for collective global partnership in the face of future health and humanitarian crises.

“Every single day counts in the fight against COVID-19 and the sooner that communities can have access to COVID-19 vaccines, the sooner they can curb the spread of the virus and get back on their feet. As a global player flying to more than 130 destinations, Emirates SkyCargo has been committed to the fight against the pandemic from the very early stages and we have rolled out a number of initiatives to expedite the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines through Dubai, starting with our GDP certified dedicated airside hub. Through our partnership with UNICEF, we will be taking yet another step to prioritise and facilitate the rapid and secure movement of COVID-19 vaccines particularly to communities hard hit by the disease,” said Nabil Sultan, Emirates Divisional Senior Vice President, Cargo.

Emirates SkyCargo is an industry leader in the air cargo sector for the transport of temperature sensitive pharmaceuticals including vaccines. The cargo carrier features a global network spanning six continents, a modern fleet of widebody only aircraft as well as state of the art EU GDP certified infrastructure at its hub in Dubai for the secure transport of pharmaceuticals and vaccines.

In October 2020, Emirates SkyCargo announced that it was setting up the world’s largest EU GDP certified airside distribution hub dedicated for the storage and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines. With over 15,000 sqmetres of storage space available for vaccines, Emirates SkyCargo is able to store large quantities of the COVID-19 vaccine in Dubai, and fly in smaller quantities regularly to markets with limited cold chain infrastructure, reducing the need for large scale storage solutions.

In January 2021, under the directives of Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Emirates SkyCargo joined hands with three other Dubai-based entities- DP World, International Humanitarian City and Dubai Airports to form a COVID-19 vaccine alliance for rapid transport of COVID-19 vaccines to the developing world through Dubai.

KARACHI, FEB 17 – Pakistan with the assistance of China should grow non-traditional products, under the agricultural and industrial cooperation information platform (AICP) between two countries, as China’s progress in the agriculture sector was worth emulating for developing countries in an official statement on Wednesday.

Pakistan Businesses Forum, Vice President Ahmad Jawad said despite several attempts to invest in the drip irrigation system, we still lagged behind. “Now is the time to analyse why has the system become a success throughout the world and not in Pakistan.

Similarly, there are six main areas of concern that require critical attention through AICP. In each area, seeking foreign funds and foreign expertise is a must.

First, our food crop yields are low and food processing industries lag behind in value addition. Second, livestock productivity is low and meat processing industry is at a nascent stage.

Third, fields, farms and orchards producing vegetables, pulses, oilseeds and fruits are yet to be organised and maintained in line with the national requirement. Fourth, fisheries and poultry sectors suffer from lack of modern farming and processing practices.

Fifth, there is a need to ensure food security for a large and growing population. And sixth, country may increases the export of agricultural commodities to earn foreign exchange after taking care of growing local demand.

In this regard PBF official recommended the finance and revenue division to provide fiscal incentives to the farmers and amendments in the banking companies ordinance to faclitate payments of loans to the farmers by the banks including ZTBL.

Further, Jawad has also urged the Pakistan Customs and Commerce Ministry officials to arrange specials arrangements for the exports of kinnows to China in the celebrations of Chinese New Year.

He said last year Pakistani kinnows shipped to China with little quantity, however the prices up to 18 times high which was an excellent indicator, as China is a market for a minimum 100,000 tons of Pakistani kinnow due to their higher demand of consumption and it totally depends how we panetrate.

He said Kinnow (Mandarin) have always been considered as a traditional symbol of good fortune in China. This is mainly because the word orange, when spoke in mandarin, sounds similar to the word ‘wealth’. The orange hue of the fruit is also said to symbolise ‘gold’ which makes it a very auspicious fruit.Ahmad Jawad briefed that Pakistan managed to find out two new markets last year for citrus export as Philippines and China are open for Pakistan’s citrus fruits now.

“It is very heartening to note that Pakistan has targeted China and Philippines markets for kinnow export and expected boost in kinnow export this year.”He suggested that Chinese authorities must allow kinnow on their all entry points so that horticulture trade may facilitate in a bigger volumes; as the protocol on phytosanitary requirements for the export of citrus fruit from Pakistan to China was signed 15 years ago on April 5, 2005 between General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of People’s Republic of China, now merged into the General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China and Ministry of National Food Security (MNFSR).“Though CPEC is poised to give tremendous boost to the horticulture industry in Pakistan, which has a promising outlook,” Jawad added. “However, presently we are facing many challenges internationally as European Union and other developed countries of the world are creating barriers for our agro exports.”

PM Imran Khan launches spring tree plantation drive

ISLAMABAD : Prime Minister Imran Khan has launched the 2021 spring tree plantation drive during a ceremony after planting a sapling in Islamabad.

Adviser to Prime Minister on Climate Change Malik Amin Aslam gave a briefing to PM Imran Khan regarding the spring tree plantation drive and presented the recommendations for the spots to initiate the plantation campaign. The ceremony was also attended by interior minister Sheikh Rasheed and Senator Faisal Javed.

While addressing the ceremony, PM Khan praised Malik Amin Aslam and his team for beginning the spring tree plantation campaign. He said that they are bringing a positive change in mindset and future generations must have to change their lifestyle.

He said that it is our responsibility to determine the losses and benefits the young generations could face in the next 20 years. The hazards of deforesting could be easily seen in Lahore, the provincial capital of Punjab.

The premier said that Lahore and Peshawar had been called garden cities and now children and elderly citizens are most affected by the pollution there. He added that environmental pollution is reducing the life span of a human being up to 11 years in Lahore, Karachi and Peshawar.

He said that 70 per cent of trees were cut down in Lahore during the last 20 years. The government spotted 50 localities to establishing urban forests in the next 10 years in Lahore.

PM Khan said that tree plantation will be launched on 20 more sites of the federal capital and urged the youth to play their role efficiently for the betterment of the country’s future. The government will promote eco-friendly steps along with youth, however, all nationals should also step forward to make efforts for the improvement of the environment.

The premier said that planting trees and establishing forests is our need to secure the country’s future as Pakistan is among 10 countries facing extreme dangers of climate change.

It is our target to plant 10 billion trees in Pakistan after completing the plantation of 1 billion trees across the country by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), said Imran Khan.

Multan Sultans hoping to reset under Rizwan

LAHORE, Feb 17  : Multan Sultans was in top form in HBL Pakistan Super League 2020, finishing with 14 points from 10 league phase games to top the table but the spectre of Covid-19 struck hard and derailed Multan’s momentum.

By the time the playoffs returned for action in November 2020, Multan appeared to have lost their touch and lost the Qualifier to Karachi Kings. Thereafter, they were out of the tournament after a loss in the second Eliminator to Lahore Qalandars.

Multan Sultans won’t be playing at their home ground in Multan, but instead have to be playing in front of the crowds in Karachi and Lahore. In 2020, Multan won all three matches played in front of their home crowd.

The 2021 edition will see Multan making a fresh start under a new captain, current star of Pakistan cricket, wicketkeeper/batsman Mohammed Rizwan. The wicketkeeper replaces Test opener Shan Masood as the leader of the franchise.

Rizwan’s rise in the past year has resulted in him getting a bigger role in the franchise. Last year, Rizwan was benched for all but two matches by Karachi Kings. He has now silenced his critics scoring 197 runs in three T20I matches against South Africa at an average of 98.50, which includes a century and a half-century.

But does Rizwan have a squad which can actually win the title? Let us take a closer look at their line-up.

Starting with the batting line-up, it represents the best talent in the business with South Africa’s Rilee Rossouw and England’s James Vince both part of the set-up and capable to giving rapid starts.

In fact, Rossouw smashed the fastest century in the history of HBL PSL, when he scored a hundred off just 43 balls with 10 boundaries and six sixes against Quetta Gladiators. The smiling left-hander has always been among the runs in the HBL PSL, first for Quetta and then for Multan.

Vince, on the other hand, is currently in top form as evidenced from his smashing 95 in the Sydney Sixers’ successful title defence at this year’s Big Bash League (BBL) final. He had earlier hit 98 not out against Perth Scorchers in the Qualifier. Multan Sultans are hoping that Vince carries his form from Australia to Pakistan.

Another Englishman Adam Lyth will be there to give a robust start, but sadly this year Zeeshan Ashraf and Moeen Ali will be missing from the line-up.  Australian basher Chris Lynn will more than make up for these absentees as he has shifted base from Lahore to Multan.

Pakistan pair of Khushdil Shah and Sohaib Maqsood will bolster the middle-order along with the ever-green Shahid Afridi. In fact, Afridi will also lead a varied spin department with veteran Imran Tahir and fast-rising Usman Qadir – all three leg-spinners with different skill sets which will help Sultans raise the bar in the middle overs.

The only grey area for Multan Sultans might well be in the pace bowling department. The hard-working Sohail Khan and Twenty20 specialist Sohail Tanvir lead the new ball attack with emerging pacers in Shahnawaz Dhani and Sohaibullah providing the support. Dhani has pace and can be a star for Sultans, while Imran Khan Senior has found a place only as a supplementary pick.

What really goes in favour of the Multan franchise is their head coach Andy Flower and bowling coach Azhar Mahmood are expected to provide vital inputs from the dugout.

It promises to be a moving year for the Multan Sultans under a new leader.

Squad:  Mohammad Rizwan (captain), Adam Lyth, Carlos Brathwaite (Supplementary), Chris Lynn, Imran Khan Senior (Supplementary), Imran Tahir, James Vince, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Umar, Rilee Rossouw, Shahid Afridi, Shahnawaz Dhani, Shan Masood, Sohaibullah, Sohaib Maqsood, Sohail Khan, Sohail Tanvir and Usman Qadir.

Dr Shaikh tweeted: ” I would like to share that the Government of Pakistan has reached a staff level agreement with the IMF. Overcoming the challenges created by the Pandemic has required concerted effort.”

Pakistan welcomes other countries’ participation in CPEC flagship project: Ambassador Haque

BEIJING, Feb 17  : Pakistan welcomes other countries to participate in the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a key project under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), as it is not only beneficial for Pakistan, but for the entire region, Pakistan Ambassador to China, Moin ul Haque said on Wednesday.

“CPEC has now been opened with the consensus of Pakistan and China to third country participation and we welcome other countries to participate in this transformational project,”

About the joining of regional countries to the CPEC, he said that Afghanistan is already participating. Recently, a shipment from Afghanistan was cleared from Gwadar port.

He said that infrastructure and connectivity projects can also take place between Pakistan, China and Afghanistan and emphasized that it will help peace and stability in Afghanistan also.

Ambassador Haque said that India never accepted the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) launched by Chinese President Xi Jinping and never joined it.

Updating on CPEC, he said, it was going very smoothly and steadily, adding, “We have completed the early harvest phase in which we have focused on infrastructure and energy projects and development of Gwadar Port which has helped Pakistan not only upgrade its road and communication network but it helped Pakistan addressed acute shortage of electricity”.

In energy sector, he said that nine projects amounting to US $18 billion have been completed and which have inject 5300 MW of electricity into national grid and three more electricity projects of about 3000 MW are in the pipeline which was essential for the industry and consumers and common household.

In second phase, we are focusing on those areas which touch people he said and added, the BRI as a whole project is a people centric project as it has been embraced by 130 countries because it is development-oriented and is helping people lives and bringing new jobs and opportunities and upgrading infrastructure and the CPEC is doing the same thing.

Ambassador Haque said that CPEC has helped develop remote areas of Pakistan, create, jobs and upgraded skills of the people.

He said that a agriculture and socioeconomic development was very important part of the CPEC Phase-II, so it was completely in line with the development agenda of the Pakistani government.

Terming Pakistan and China partnership and relationship as a factor of peace and stability in the region, he said the relationship between Pakistan and China are unique and special and in thick or thin, rain or shine, the two countries have always stood together. “That is why we call it all weather strategic cooperative partnership.”

He said this relationship has been constant irrespective of changes of any governments in the two countries and irrespective of changes of any regional or international development. So, this is the testimony of successive leadership, successive generations of people that has given this relationship a new meaning and significant.

Ambassador Haque said that this year marks 70 years of establishment of bilateral relationship between Pakistan and China, a very important milestone for our two countries.

He said that every phase of our relationship is important during last 70 years which gave a new vitality of our relationship. We established diplomatic relations in 1951 the first high level contact between our two countries was in 1955 and Premier Zhou En Lai met our then Prime Minister Muhammad Ali Bogra in Bandung, Indonesia.

And, the first contact laid the foundation for future relationship when in next year Premier Zhou En Lai visited Pakistan and people of Pakistan were impressed by his sagacity, simplicity and charisma and very positive outlook for the future relations.

He said that Premier Zho En Lai visited Pakistan four times later on and he became a household name in Pakistan.

He said that Pakistan and China signed a boundary agreement and it was a time when question on boundaries led to conflicts. During war with India in 1965, China stood with Pakistan wholeheartedly and that was the time when political relationship was transformed into love in the hearts of people.

In 1970s, Pakistan played a key role bringing China and the US closer and it changed the dynamic of cold war in that times.

Ambassador Haque said, in the turn of this century, there was very important development in civil nuclear energy field cooperation between the two countries. China helped Pakistan setting up very important nuclear energy plants like Chashma-1 and Chasham-2 and now Pakistan has four such nuclear plants which are contributing in addressing our energy needs.

In recent time, when President Xi Jinping visited Pakistan in April 2015, the relationship between the two countries was elevated to all weather strategic cooperative partners, he added.

“The visit gave a new dimension to our relationship and it was the most important visit that Pakistan organized in many years.”

To a question about Covid-19 pandemic, he said it was one of unprecedented health crisis faced by the entire global community and Pakistan was also impacted but through prudent policies of the government like smart lockdown and taking care of the poor segments of the society and trying to keep the economic activities going, this strategy has worked.

“We have been able to control the pandemic to a large extent. Now, we are going through second wave of pandemic and the government is taking measures to control this also”, he added.

Appreciating prevention and control measures adopted by China to fight the pandemic, he said, the way the Chinese government and people have controlled this pandemic is exemplary.

About his future plans, he said that there are some areas where the two countries could do more in economic relationship. “We have launched FTA Phase-II but because of the Covid-19 we could not fully implement it. I will work to enhance trade between the two countries”.

Under CPEC framework, he said that the two countries could enhance cooperation in agriculture, science and technology, vocational training, poverty alleviation and tourism.

He said that efforts are being made to increase people to people contact and cultural exchanges. Last October, a Pakistani movie was screened in China after 45 years and it was well received.

He pointed out that both countries are taking concrete steps to enhance tourism and invited the Chinese tourists to visit Pakistan and explore its beautiful places and culture.

“We have developed a Chinese website to promote tourism between Pakistan and China and we will launch it soon”, he said.

Aman 2021: The importance of Pakistan’s multinational naval drill

Karachi : Getting competing nations to partake in a military exercise is a mammoth task. But recently Pakistan proved the old dictum that “sea unites while land divides” by successfully organising the “Exercise Aman 2021”.

The week-long maritime exercise was conducted in the Arabian Sea off of Karachi. Forty-three countries sent their navies to the event, while a few nations also contributed their ships.

The diversity of the participants can be gauged by the fact that six out of seven continents were represented in the military drill.

Some participants, including the world’s largest navies, joined the drill to share their rich experience. Others became part of it sensing an opportunity to better equip themselves in the maritime domain.

Oceans are called highways of global economy, which is why this exercise was aimed at displaying a united resolve against terrorism, piracy, drugs, arms smuggling, human smuggling and other maritime crimes.

The event also helped enhance interoperability between regional and extra-regional navies to defeat common adversaries.

Since 2007, this biannual event has become a testament to project a soft image of Pakistan. But, this time, three major factors brought Pakistan to the global limelight and exponentially raised the stature of the Pakistan Navy in maritime diplomacy.

First and foremost, Pakistan’s ability to tackle the coronavirus pandemic ahead of the drill. This exercise comes at a moment when the whole world is still operating remotely. Even the US European Command had to modify the size and scope of its military exercise, Defender-Europe 20.

Yet, navies from across the globe showed their presence and made it memorable for all.

Second and equally important was the makeup of the participants. The military drill attracted competing countries like the US,  Russia, Japan and China as well as Iran and Saudi Arabia, to mention a few.

For the first time, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) members joined Russia in a military exercise off of Karachi.

Which brings us to the question: has that policy of the NATO bloc changed? Not entirely.

The US, UK and other NATO members have only joined Aman-21 in an individual capacity. The current exercise has literally no comparison with the Bold Monarch 2011, where a Russian submarine was fully integrated in the NATO led drill. But since then, relations between NATO and Russia have only deteriorated.

Now that Joe Biden has come to power in the US, it is likely that the administration will be keeping a keen eye on Pakistan’s gradual drift towards China and Russia.

At the drill in Karachi, Pakistan’s closeness with Russia was very evident. Pakistan’s Chief of Naval Staff was also called on by Deputy Chief of Russian Navy HQ Rear Admiral Oleg V Apishev.

The Chinese side was led by a guided-missile destroyer “Guiyang” and the People’s Liberation Army’s Flotilla also included a guided-missile frigate “Zaozhuang” and a supplement ship “Dongpinghu”.

The Sino-US participation in Aman-21 comes at a time when tensions between Beijing and Washington are mounting over the South China Sea and Taiwan Strait.

Meanwhile, the Southern Fleet Commander, Commodore Ariya Shafghat Rodsari, headed the Iranian contingent. Since the tragic assassination of General Qassem Soleimani, the commander of Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, it was the first time the US and Iranian military were attending a joint drill.

For Pakistan, the military drill was crucial as it ensures peace and stability in this strategically important maritime region. The foreign ship officials also acknowledged the efforts of Pakistan Navy in bringing global navies towards a shared commitment of maritime peace and lawful order at sea.

The event also gave a clear message to India that it simply cannot isolate Pakistan.
