Afghan attack targets Indian mission

Suicide bombers have targeted the Indian consulate in the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad, killing at least nine civilians. Three bombers drove up in a car before detonating their explosives, police said. Gunfire was heard for an hour after the blast which took place at 10:00 local time (06:30 GMT). Most of the victims were from a nearby mosque. Indian officials say none of their citizens were hurt. At least 23 people, among them children, were injured in the Jalalabad attack, according to the police. Deputy police chief of Nangarhar province Masum Khan Hashimi said the blast, close to a mosque, had been a failed attempt to attack the Indian consulate. Also, an eyewitness told the BBC that one of the suspected bombers asked him directions to the consulate immediately before the attack. Mr Hashimi said two of the attackers wearing vests laden with explosives got out of the car and were immediately fired upon by police.

An Opening in Iran

By Cliff Kupchan
When Iran’s president-elect Hassan Rouhani takes office on Aug. 3, he will probably bring moderation to at least some aspects of Iranian nuclear policy. It would be tragic if Rouhani’s ascent becomes yet another missed opportunity in the U.S.-Iran saga.

Lessons from Abbottabad

Imtiaz Gul
Osama Bin Laden’s escape from the Tora Bora mountains in Eastern Afghanistan in December 2001 to his last refuge in Abbottabad raised many questions. Some of them have been answered by the Abbottabad Commission, whose report was leaked to Al Jazeera last week, but others are still open. How was the world’s most wanted person living in that same house for all those years undetected? Why did Bin Laden fascinate certain people and groups in Pakistan who blew holes in the security apparatus to protect him and his family for so long? Who from within the security establishment provided him safety despite Dr Ayman al Zawahiri’s calls for Pakistani civilians and soldiers to revolt against the government.
