Senate polls: PTI decides to challenge Gillani’s papers in appellate tribunal

ISLAMABAD, FEB 19 (DNA) – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Friday has decided to re-challenge the nomination papers of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader and joint candidate of Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) for Senate elections, Yousaf Raza Gillani in appellate tribunal.

Sources told that PTI representative has obtained the verified copies from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in this regard. The decision came day after ECP had rejected the objections raised by PTI leader Fareed Rehman and approved nomination papers of Gillani, allowing him to contest the Senate elections.

On February 16, 2021, PTI had challenged Gillani’s nomination papers and accused him of concealing the facts. Yousaf Raza Gillani had not mentioned his sentence in contempt of court case in his nomination papers, PTI leader said. Fareed Rahman further said that Gillani didn’t fulfill the requirement of Article 62 of the Constitution.

While recording arguments on the objections, the counsel of PDM candidate said that his client was charged not convicted in the case and that Supreme Court (SC) had given him a symbolic sentence. The sentence of Yousaf Raza Gillani ended in 2017 and he contested the General Elections in 2018, he told. PTI’s allegations were lies.

The time of ECP was wasted on this matter and nomination papers of Yousaf Raza Gilani should be accepted, the lawyer argued. PPP leader Nayyar Hussain Bukhari said that if the objectors had read Article 63 of the Constitution, they would have not come raised this issue as this article does not apply here.

It is to be mentioned here that a total of 170 candidates had filed their nomination papers in the ECP for the elections on 48 seats in the upper house of the Parliament. 29 candidates from Punjab, 39 from Sindh, 51 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), 41 from Balochistan and 10 from the federal capital Islamabad had submitted their details.

As per schedule, the candidates can file appeals against acceptance or rejection of nomination papers on February 20 and the last date for disposing of these appeals is February 23. The revised list of candidates will be published on February 24. The candidates can withdraw their nomination papers on February 25. Polling on 48 seats will be held on the 3rd of next month at the Parliament house in Islamabad and the four provincial assemblies. = DNA

ICCI calls for new policy reforms to get rid of IMF lending

ISLAMABAD, FEB 19 (DNA) – Sardar Yasir Ilyas Khan, President, Islamabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ICCI) has called upon the government to focus on new policy reforms in order to generate indigenous resources instead of depending on IMF loans to run the economy as borrowing from IMF is not a long-term solution to address the issues of the economy.

He said that injection of fresh cash into a bleeding economy without making structural reforms would not help Pakistan to overcome its economic problems.

He said that by making frequent borrowings from IMF, Pakistan has been piling up its foreign debt burden thus making future of taxpayers and our generations bleaker. He said this while addressing a meeting of business community at Islamabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

Sardar Yasir Ilyas Khan said that the government was not taking the business community in the loop while finalizing borrowing programs with the IMF. He said that the main reason for the fiscal deficit was that the government was spending more than generating revenues due to low tax collection. He said that the government’s economic and tax policies were not helpful for a conducive business environment due to which potential taxpayers were shying away from coming into the tax net.

He said that the government has recently further hiked the electricity tariff by Rs.1.95 per unit which will further enhance the cost of doing business while notices from FBR to businesses for late tax filing will also discourage the new taxpayers from coming into the tax system.

He said that ever since the signing of the last financing facility with IMF, the government has depreciated rupee by almost 40 percent, made repeated hike in prices of electricity, gas and oil products and increased import duties to pass on all the liabilities of IMF to the businesses and the general public. However, all these measures have combined to make a great increase in the cost of doing business.

ICCI President urged that Pakistan must expand its tax base to address the issue of fiscal deficit. However, for increasing tax revenue, the government must focus on drastic tax reforms to make the complicated tax system easy and simple for taxpayers and avoid all coercive tactics, which shatter the confidence of the business community. He said that the government should take Chambers of Commerce & Industry on board to bring non-filers into the tax net because without broadening the tax base, Pakistan would never be able to reduce the fiscal deficit, generate surplus revenue and get rid of foreign debt burden.

Sardar Yasir Ilyas Khan said that Pakistan was mostly dependent on limited items for exports like textiles, surgical instruments, leather products and urged that the government should give more focus to promoting exports of agricultural, IT, engineering, pharmaceutical and other non-traditional products in which the country enjoyed competitive advantage.

He said that tourism was another potential area to earn billions of dollars for the country and the government should announce attractive incentives for the private sector to invest in tourism infrastructure development on a public-private partnership model. He said that Dubai generated around USD 22 billion and UK around Pound 106 billion from tourism and Pakistan could also strengthen its economy by promoting tourism for which conducive policies were needed.=DNA
