Efforts to provide relief to masses, improve economy will be compromised: Mian Zahid

KARACHI, MAR 15 – Chairman of National Business Group of FPCCI, President Pakistan Businessmen and Intellectuals Forum and All Karachi Industrial Alliance, and former provincial minister Mian Zahid Hussain on Monday said the recent Senate elections have exposed serious flaws in the system.

How come general elections can be conducted in a good manner if an issue of one hundred votes cannot be tackled properly, he said?

Mian Zahid Hussain said that Senate elections have resulted in increased tensions among the stakeholders which has raised concerns among the business community as instability will multiply in the weeks to come.

Talking to the business community, the veteran business leader said that the politicians representing the ruling the coalition, as well as opposition, have started the verbal war in press conferences and talk shows widening the political divide.

A new round of litigations and protests could be seen on the horizon which will deprive the government of its ability to provide relief to the masses or undertake some serious long due reforms, he observed.

The business leader noted that how come government deliver when its whole attention would be focused on thwarting the moves of the increasingly belligerent opposition.

The tussle between the government and the opposition will provide a perfect opportunity for the profiteers to skin masses for their profits further pushing millions below the poverty line.

He noted that the politics of confrontation will not only hit the economy and masses but all the private and state-run businesses including the stock exchange and it will also damage the society as well as the system.

The government and the opposition should control their spokespersons who are adding fuel to the fire and all the political parties should join hands to remove weaknesses from the election process, rules should be improved and the issue of spy cameras should be tackled in the best possible way.

The situation should be pushed towards normalcy to save the economy from further erosion and provide some relief to the troubled masses, he demanded.

OGDCL produces 36,423 BBL oil, 856 MMCFD gas in six months

ISLAMABAD, Mar 15 : Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) has produced around 36,423 BBL oil, 856 MMCFD gas, 778 TPD LPG and 52 TPD Sulphur during first half of the current fiscal year.

The company’s production witnessed a slight decline due to natural depletion at some oil and gas fields as compared to same period of the last year.

The two-quarter production of last year was 38,084 Barrel (BBL) of crude oil, 910 Million Cubic Feet per Day (MMCFD) of gas, 747 Tons per Day (TPT) of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and 54 TPD Sulphur, according to the OGDCL’s half-yearly report available.

During the period under review, the OGDCL’s oil and gas production was impacted primarily by natural decline at Kunnar, KPD-TAY, Dakhni and Nashpa fields.

Moreover, lower production was recorded on account of non-revival/partial revival of forced shut-in wells of Kunnar-2, 3, 9 & 10 during COVID-19 coupled with annual turn around at Dakhni, Nashpa , Sinjhoro and Uch wells.

Likewise, gas production was also affected due to decline in production share from NJV fields combined with less gas In-take from Qadirpur and Uch fields by Engro Powergen and M/s UPL-I & II respectively.

The company said the production decline was partially mitigated by injection of ten operated wells in the gathering system including Mela-7, Pasakhi-11, TAY South West-1, Saand-1&2, Umair-1, Mangrio-1, Togh Bala-1, Nashpa-10 and Pasakhi Deep-6 which cumulatively yielded gross crude oil and gas production of 163,894 barrels and 2,039 MMCF respectively.

In order to arrest the natural decline and sustain production from mature fields, as many as fifty seven work-over jobs were carried out comprising 7 with rig and 50 rig-less.

Billie Eilish wins Record of the Year Grammy

Los Angeles, March 15 : Billie Eilish on Sunday snagged the Grammy for Record of the Year for the second straight time, a major feat for the 19-year-old who swept all four top categories at last year’s ceremony.

This time, the edgy pop sensation bested a crowded field including the night’s big stars Megan Thee Stallion and Beyonce, along with Dua Lipa, Post Malone and Doja Cat, to win the prize honoring the year’s best overall song for her hit “Everything I Wanted.”

In 2020, the ‘teenage phenom’ cemented her place as an establishment leader, posting a banner Grammy night by sweeping prizes for Album, Record and Song of the Year, plus Best New Artist — the first woman and youngest artist to do so.

“Everything I Wanted” is a gauzy ode to the struggles of stardom that touches on the teenage angst over feelings of inadequacy, imposter syndrome and concerns about fitting in.

Last year, she won Record of the Year honors for her hit “Bad Guy” off her debut “when we all fall asleep, where do we go?”, which won for Album of the Year.

Before her album’s release in March 2019, Eilish had already won a fervent online following for her bold, often haunting pop sound featuring heavy bass and tinges of trap and electronic dance music.

She is now one of the biggest pop stars in the world, and though the pandemic forced her to cancel her global tour, she still posted a strong year that included penning the theme ballad for the upcoming James Bond film “No Time to Die” — which also scored a Grammy on Sunday.

ISLAMABAD :Prime Minister Imran Khan has been the leading international voice in raising awareness on the grave consequences of rising systematic Islamophobia and in promoting inter-faith harmony. In line with his vision, Pakistan presented a Resolution to designate 15 March as the ‘International Day to Combat Islamophobia’ at the 47th Session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM), held in Niamey, Niger, on 27-28 November 2020. The Resolution was unanimously adopted by the CFM. The OIC is now working with the international community to commemorate this Day at the global level.

The OIC’s unanimous support for the designation of this Day is a reflection of the sentiments of billions of Muslims around the world. Pakistan, today, joins members of the OIC in observing for the first time the ‘International Day to Combat Islamophobia.’ Marking this occasion, the OIC Group will hold a High-Level Event in New York on 17 March 2021.

The scourge of Islamophobia, fuelled by populism, hate speech, and lack of knowledge and disinformation, is causing unimaginable suffering to Muslim minorities around the world. Islamophobia has taken many forms including inter alia negative profiling, mob lynchings by cow vigilantes, discriminatory laws, attacks on women for wearing hijabs, ban on minarets, negative propaganda and disinformation campaigns, manifestos of far-right parties, deliberate vandalism of Islamic symbols and holy sites, and attempts to link and equate Islam with terrorism. Such acts imperil our shared aspirations for a peaceful world and harmonious future for all.

Pakistan has always supported and continues to lead international efforts for building bridges between cultures and civilizations. Through the observance of this Day, we want to build better understanding of Islam and Islamic precepts. We intend to send a message of international solidarity and cooperation. We remain determined to promote values of peaceful co-existence as well as inter-faith and cultural harmony.

Chinese expert shares experience for desert locust control in Pakistan

BEIJING, March 15 : A Chinese expert shares his experience for desert locust control in Pakistan on a webinar jointly held by China and Pakistan, according to a report published by China Economic Net (CEN).

The report says, Tang Renjian, the minister of the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and Syed Fakhar Imam, the minister of the Pakistani Ministry of National Food Security & Research sent a congratulation and a video address respectively for the launch of the locust control training.

At the seminar, Zhang Long, a professor from China Agricultural University, said China and Pakistan are iron brothers, and China would like to help Pakistan deal with the desert locust plague.

Zhang is one of the expert team members who traveled to Pakistan to help the desert locust control in February 2020.

As Zhang along with the other experts made a field trip across Pakistan then, Zhang made different suggestions for desert locust control according to different situations.

Zhang points out that Punjab province is facing the most emergent situation now.

As the nymphs will hatch in the next two weeks, some action must be taken immediately, including digging out eggs and spraying chemicals.

Besides specific measures, Zhang also advised Pakistanis to establish a sustainable, high-efficient and long-term management system for the desert locust control. In this system, biological and ecological controls are the main methods.

Zhang thought that monitoring and forecast of the locust should be more precise and efficient.

Zhang also stressed that Pakistan should strengthen scientific research in locust biology, ecology and physiology to tackle threats of locust plague. He also advised to train more people for the locust control.

The webinar is jointly by relevant departments of China and Pakistan, including the Chinese Embassy in Pakistan, the National Agro-tech Extension and Service Center affiliated to the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, the Pakistani Embassy in Beijing and the Pakistani Ministry of National Food Security & Research.
