LAST-GASP HAALAND GIVES DORTMUND 2-2 DRAW AT COLOGNE

Prolific striker Erling Haaland continued his rich vein of form as he netted twice including a late equaliser to salvage a 2-2 draw for Borussia Dortmund at Cologne in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

The result left fifth-placed Dortmund losing ground in the hunt for a top-four finish as they have 43 points from 26 games, four less than Eintracht Frankfurt in fourth who celebrated a 5-2 home win over Union Berlin.

Cologne stayed 14th on 23 points, two above the relegation spots.

Haaland gave Dortmund a third-minute lead with a sublime finish as he took a long Emre Can ball in his stride and held off Jorge Mere’s challenge before he steered a low shot through the legs of goalkeeper Timo Horn.

Ondrej Duda levelled with a 35th-minute penalty after Noah Katterbach’s shot hit Jude Bellingham in the arm and Ismail Jacobs then turned the tide as he capped a fast break with an unstoppable shot in the 65th.

Just when it seemed Cologne would complete the league double over Dortmund having beaten them 2-1 in the reverse fixture, Haaland popped up in front of goal to tap in a 90th-minute assist by Ansgar Knauff.

PAKISTAN’S EHSAAS EMERGENCY CASH PROGRAMME AVERTED AN ECONOMIC CATASTROPHE: REPORT

ISLAMABAD, Mar 20 (DNA): A new report released on Saturday revealed that
Pakistan’s innovative emergency cash programme helped avert an economic
catastrophe during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Released by the International Policy Centre for Inclusive Growth
(IPC-IG), the report, “What’s next for social protection in light of
COVID-19: country responses” focuses on experiences from countries in
Asia, including Pakistan, sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and North
Africa (MENA), and Latin America and the Caribbean.

The deep dive into social protection responses to the COVID-19 crisis
highlights Pakistan’s effort to tackle poverty amidst the biggest global
crisis in more than a century and provides overall lessons for the
future including shock-responsive and universal social protection.

In Pakistan, the report analyses how the COVID-19 pandemic was a
watershed period for Pakistan in terms of government functioning: making
it more agile, data-driven, experimental, and ambitious.

“I welcome the analysis of this report on Pakistan quickly reacted to
the COVID-19 pandemic and focused on saving lives and livelihoods,” said
Dr. Sania Nishtar, Special Assistant of Pakistan’s Prime Minister,
Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety Ministry, Government of Pakistan.
“I hope lessons learned from Pakistan’s experience can help other
countries protect people during an emergency”, she further said.

Recounting Pakistan’s social protection response to the COVID-19 crisis,
the report says, “The Ehsaas Emergency Cash (EEC) programme demonstrated
how cash transfer programmes can be deployed to counter the
socio-economic fallout due to external shocks such as the COVID-19
pandemic. The lockdown in Pakistan—the fifth most populous country in
the world affected the livelihoods of 24.9 million.”

The study reveals that social protection had been an integral component
of Pakistan’s response to the crisis. In response to the economic impact
of the pandemic, the Government of Pakistan launched the emergency cash
transfer scheme and delivered approximately USD 1.1 billion to 14.8
million families at risk of extreme poverty. Each low-income household
received a one-time payment of USD75, enough to buy staple food items
for the four months.”

Further, the report highlights that the EEC programme augmented the
digital infrastructure already in place and followed a hybrid targeting
approach to identify beneficiaries. The programme accelerated the
adoption of cost-effective, digital initiatives that enabled new ways of
coordinating across multiple stakeholders and deploying a
whole-of-government approach.

The current Policy in Focus presents the key discussions of the global
e-conference: “Turning the COVID-19 crisis into an opportunity: What’s
next for social protection?” held in the first week of Oct 2020. At the
e-conference, Dr. Sania Nishtar was invited to represent Pakistan at the
country panel on Asia Pacific.

The IPC-IG is a global forum for international dialogue on innovative
development policies, guided by a partnership agreement between the
Government of Brazil, represented by the Ministry of Economy and the
Brazilian Institute for Applied Economic Research (Ipea), and the United
Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The IPC-IG’s mandate is to promote the production and dissemination of
studies and policy recommendations, the exchange of best practices in
development initiatives and the expansion of dialogue among developing
countries.

CHINA COOPERATION KEY REASON BEHIND “PAK RUPEE” RISE

BEIJING, March 20 (DNA): China’s steady financial cooperation is one of key reasons behind rise of Pakistan currency “rupee” in the region, according to an article carried by Gwadar Pro on Friday.

It says, Pakistani currency has recovered 12 rupees against dollar. The development is helping increase export bill by reducing burden on import bill leading to give strength to the overall economy.

Rupee has ascended to its highest level of 155.74 against dollar in one year that is considered a remarkable upturn.

Alarmingly, in the past, Pakistani rupee touched 167.7 against dollar vindicating spiraling depreciation of rupee. However it regained its lost strength when rupee hovered to 155.74 against dollar, making a difference of 11 rupee despite the economic tumble due to COVID-19 pandemic.

Pakistan currency has breathed well on the back of consistent China’s FDI inflow, Pakistan’s rising exports to China, unshaken financial assistance in CPEC projects and Chinese investors’ avidity in Pakistan’s market that injected a new life to Pakistan’s economy allowing recovery of rupee.

Besides, rupee strengthening is also associated with strong flows of remittances helping the foreign currency reserves stay stable at $ 20.2 billion.

As per latest data released by State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), China is a top destination from where the foreign direct investment arrived in Fiscal Year 2021. Chinese investors invested some $ 493 million in Pakistan during July to February of FY 2021.

Last week, China’s $ 60 million investment in textile sector made everybody sit up and take notice during Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Nong Rong’s visit to Challenge Textile Factory on Lahore-Multan Road.

China has added over $ 25 billion in FDI to Pakistan under CPEC, stated by Zhao Lijian, spokesperson of Chinese Foreign Ministry at a news briefing.

“Higher foreign remittances and exports receipts support the south Asian currency,” experts say.

In February, workers’ remittances remained above $ 2 billion for the ninth consecutive month. Workers’ remittances amounted to $ 2.266 billion in February 2021, around the same level as the previous month and 24.2 percent higher than that in February 2020, according to the State Bank of Pakistan.

Currency analysts say that flow of foreign currencies has improved post COVID-19 pandemic.

The central bank’s initiative of Roshan Digital Account (RDA) has seen deposits reaching $ 671 million from over 100 countries.

It is estimated that the inflows through RDA are expected to hit $ 1.5 billion by the end of this year.

Economist Slaman Shah said that the State Bank of Pakistan is attracting foreign investments to the country, which is supporting Pakistani rupee against the US dollar.

He said that more positive effects are going to be felt soon as progress is insight on the agreement of trading in Chinese currency Renminbi (RMB) against dollar between Pakistan and China.

Agreement came when the two countries agreed to do business in Pakistani rupee and Chinese currency Renminbi (RMB) during the visit of Prime Minister Imran Khan to Beijing.
