China ready to work with North Korea and other parties for peace on Korean Peninsula: Xi Jinping

BEIJING, MAR 22: Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday said China is ready to work with North Korea and other parties for peace on the Korean Peninsula, state-run media said.

“China is willing to work with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, and other related parties to uphold the political settlement of the Korean Peninsula issue and preserve peace and stability on the peninsula, so as to make new contributions to regional peace, stability, development and prosperity,” said Xi.

The remarks from the Chinese president came in a verbal exchange of messages with North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un, according to Xinhua News Agency.

Experts see Beijing as a critical party to any effort by Washington to solve the longstanding nuclear issue of North Korea.

Last week, North Korea said it had turned down an offer by the US for talks, stating that dialogue would be possible only if both sides come to an “equal footing.”

Kim and former US President Donald Trump met in 2018 and 2019, but failed to make progress on Washington’s calls for Pyongyang to give up its nuclear weapons and North Korea‘s demands for an end to sanctions.

SAUDI ARABIA ANNOUNCES AN INITIATIVE TO END YEMENI CRISIS

RIYADH, MAR 22: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia announced an initiative to end the Yemeni crisis and reach a comprehensive political resolution.

The initiative comes in continuation of the Kingdom’s concern for the security and stability of Yemen and the region, and its serious and practical steps to support peace in Yemen and put an end to the crisis.

The initiative aims to end the human suffering of the brotherly Yemeni people, and affirms the Kingdom’s support for efforts to reach a comprehensive political resolution between the Yemeni parties in line with discussions in Biel, Geneva, Kuwait and Stockholm.

The initiative includes the following proposals: A comprehensive ceasefire across the country under the supervision of the United Nations. Depositing taxes and custom revenues for ships carrying oil derivatives to the port of Hodeidah in the joint account of the Central Bank of Yemen in Hodeidah, in accordance with the Stockholm Agreement on Hodeidah.

The reopening of Sanaa International Airport to a number of direct regional and international destinations. The start of consultations between the Yemeni parties to reach a political resolution to the Yemeni crisis under the auspices of the United Nations based on the references of UN Security Council Resolution 2216, the Gulf initiative and its implementation mechanism, and the outcomes of the Yemeni national dialogue.

This initiative comes within the framework of the continuous support for the efforts of the United Nations Special Envoy to Yemen, Mr. Martin Griffiths, the US envoy to Yemen, Mr. Timothy Lenderking, along with the positive role of the Sultanate of Oman, and the push to reach a political resolution to the crisis under the auspices of the United Nations.

The Kingdom calls on the Yemeni government and the Houthis to accept the initiative, which gives the Houthis the opportunity to stop the bloodshed in Yemen, address the humanitarian and economic conditions that the brotherly Yemeni people are suffering from, and gives them the opportunity to become partners in achieving peace.

The initiative gives the Houthis an opportunity to uphold the interests of the brotherly Yemeni people first, and the Yemeni people’s right to their sovereignty and the independence of their homeland over the Iranian regime’s expansionary ambitions in Yemen and the region. The Kingdom calls on the Houthis to declare their acceptance of the initiative, which is to be implemented under the supervision and monitoring of the United Nations.

The Kingdom also affirms its full right to defend its land, citizens and residents from the systematic attacks carried out by the Iranian-backed Houthi militia against civilian areas and vital installations that not only target the Kingdom’s national interests, but also target the core of the global economy and its supplies, as well as global energy security.

The Kingdom also affirms its total rejection of Iranian interference in the region and Yemen. The Iranian regime’s support for the Houthi militias through smuggling, developing , supplying missiles and weapons, provision of military experts, and violation of relevant Security Council resolutions, remains the main reason for the prolonging of the Yemeni crisis.

The Kingdom and Coalition countries affirm their continued support for the Yemeni people and their legitimate government.

The Kingdom also affirms that it will remain committed to its humanitarian role in alleviating the suffering of the brotherly Yemeni people, by supporting all efforts for peace, security and stability in Yemen and moving towards a new stage for the development and improvement of the Yemeni people’s livelihood.=DNA

ISLAMABAD: Some serious anomalies have been reported in the process of appointment of Director General of Pakistan Sports Board. Reportedly, the man who was nowhere in the list has been put at the top, which is in complete disregard of merit.

According to details, Ministry IPC advertised the post of DG PSB (M-2). Around 47 candidates including Abdul Ghaffar Khan applied. Out of which 26 were short listed for interview. Interview panel comprised Minister Inter Provincial Coordiantion IPC, Secretary IPC , Add. Secy IPC , JS IPC and Add. Secy  Establishment Division. Interviews were held in two batches: one on 15th Februray and the other one on 17th February.

After interview, Abdul Ghaffar Khan was recalled on 18th February by the Minister and informed that he had been selected and a summary containing a panel of three while placing him at Serial No.1 is being sent to the Prime Minister for approval. The Secretary IPC also joined this meeting and a detailed Plan of Action about reviewing the legal framework, reformulation of National Sports Policy and Restructuring of Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) were discussed.

Reportedly this summary was sent to Establishment Division for its onward submission to the Prime Minister.

At a later stage name of Col Asif Zaman was included in the panel. Col Asif Zaman did appear in the interview but he didn’t quality to be placed in the panel of three, sources said. The original panel reportedly comprised of the following:1. Abdul Ghaffar Khan 2. M Tauseef 3.Dr Ejaz.

While the amended panel, now sent to the PM is as under:1. Col. M. Asif Zaman 2. Abdul Ghaffar Khan 3. M Tauseef. It’s pertinent to mention that Col Asif Zaman is younger brother of Qamar Zaman, Squash champion.

Amazingly, the Ministry IPC, while submitting the amended summary to Establishment Division, forgot to change the minute sheet and Estt Div had to send the summary back to Ministry IPC observing that the summary is not in consonance with the minutes sheet. Thus the Ministry IPC changed the minutes sheet as well. This all is part of record/ file lying in Ministry IPC.

It’s unfortunate that this action has been leaked out and everyone in the Ministry IPC, in the Estt Div, the media and the Sports fraternity in Pakistan is now aware of it. Sources say, situation is damaging the image for the PTI govt that is making struggle against corrupt practices and trying to bringing about meritocracy in the governance.

RENEWED COMMITMENT FROM PAKISTAN!

Some moments in national life are very precious, and living nations do not waste these moments or let them be forgotten. March 23, 1940 is one such day in the national history of Pakistan when a historic resolution was passed at the end of the three-day annual meeting of the All India Muslim League in Minto Park, Lahore, on the basis of which the Muslim League leaders started a movement for a separate homeland for Muslims in the subcontinent and succeeded in getting his demand approved in a short period of seven years.

It is clear that the Pakistan Resolution was passed on March 23, 1940 after going through many difficult stages, but we can all estimate it hypothetically. From the beginning of 1940, Quaid-i-Azam gradually shifted the views and opinions of the Muslims of the subcontinent towards the ten-year-old goal for which AllamaIqbal was striving. The Quaid-e-Azam, while expressing his views in the London newspaper Time and Tide, had clearly declared that Hindus and Muslims are two separate nations. Quaid-i-Azam wrote in reply to Gandhiji’s letter that he had no misunderstanding that India was not one and the same. The subcontinent is inhabited by many nations, Hindus and Muslims being the two major nations. In February 1940, a meeting of the Working Committee and Council of the Muslim League was held in Delhi, where it was decided that the demand for a separate state for Muslims would be presented at the Lahore meeting.

The 27th meeting of the Muslim League, presided over by Quaid-e-Azam, started with great pomp on March 22, 1940. It was very successful in terms of assembly. More than 50,000 people attended the meeting. In his presidential address at the open session of the Muslim League on March 22, the Quaid highlighted the two-nation ideology and said in no uncertain terms that India’s problem was not sectarian but international, and that it was impossible to combine fire and water. Alhamdulillah, Pakistan is based on this ideology and at that time those who opposed this ideology were regretting their own decision. Just look at the recent amendments to the Indian law, how the controversial Citizenship Bill was introduced in defiance of Islam, newspaper headlines there are now slamming opponents of the ideology of Pakistan and they are convinced of the political insight of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

There is no denying the fact that the Pakistan Resolution of March 23 is a blessing or a gift for all of us (Muslims). If all Pakistanis pledge to protect this gift, then every enemy of the country will think a hundred times before looking at our beloved land with a dirty eye. We celebrate Pakistan Day every year with great enthusiasm, events are also organized in the educational institutions of the country, special programs and influential writings on print, social and electronic media are selected, but all these matters do not fall into the category of loyalty to the beloved land, our homeland demands sacrifices from us, and it is our duty to pledge solidarity and unity with it, we pledge to lead Pakistan in the light of the guiding principles of faith, unity and discipline. We will make Pakistan a truly welfare and Islamic state, we will implement the Qur’an and Sunnah system in Pakistan in practice, we will liberate Pakistan from the slavery of others, we will wage jihad against those who promote Hindu culture and its traditions.

For the people of Pakistan, Pakistan Day is a day of renewed commitment, the responsibility to improve this country lies not only with the government and the braves of the Pakistani forces guarding the border, we all have a responsibility to develop and protect this country. Forgetting all kinds of differences and setting an example of unity so that the enemy countries cannot even think of conspiracies against us. We have spent our time, but the future of our children has to be decided in the same way as our elders have made a dream come true for us and made it a free country. In the same way, it is our duty to train the youth for the integrity and survival of this country, to give them a conducive environment so that they can be able to run this country. This year, let us all renew our commitment to Pakistan on Pakistan Day that in the light of the Pakistan resolution, we will individually and collectively become the Shaheen of AllamaIqbal and make Pakistan’s future bright.

Hike in gas tariff up to 220 percent will damage economy: Mian Zahid

DNA

KARACHI, MAR 22 – Chairman of National Business Group of FPCCI, President Pakistan Businessmen and Intellectuals Forum and All Karachi Industrial Alliance, and former provincial minister Mian Zahid Hussain on Monday said prices of almost everything are rising despite a fall in the value of US dollar and a stronger rupee.

The cost of doing business of importers of raw material, finished goods and food items have reduced substantially but the benefit is not being transferred to the masses which should be noticed, he said.

Mian Zahid Hussain said that the new wave of inflation before the holy month of Ramadan should be controlled to provide some relief to masses facing eroded buying power due to unprecedented inflation.

Talking to the business community, the veteran business leader said that the government should reject the application of gas companies for a gas tariff hike up to 220 percent as this mini-budget will destroy the economy.

He said that dollar has lost around 10 percent of its value against the rupee since August 2020 which has added to the profit of importers but the consumers were deprived of the benefit.

The strengthened rupee has reduced the import cost of cement, steel, iron, building material, food items, sugar, flour and many other things which must be probed, he said, adding that cooking oil and ghee was available for Rs250 per kg in August 2020 which is now being sold at Rs300 per kg.

Similarly the price of wheat flour, milk, sugar, poultry products and spices have increased while the price of chilli powder has increased by Rs500 per kg.

Over a billion dollars have been spent on the import of wheat flour and sugar but prices have not stabilised which is a question mark on the working of federal and provincial governments, he said.

PepsiCo expands ‘Access to Safe Water’ Program in Islamabad

Islamabad, MAR 22 (DNA) – Ali Nawaz Awan Special Assistant to Prime Minister for CDA Affairs inaugurated a rehabilitated water filtration facility in Islamabad. The refurbishment was facilitated by the international non-governmental organization, WaterAid, with support from global food and beverage company, PepsiCo. It is expected that approximately 9,000 people from and around Saidpur Village will directly benefit from the new facility.

This project is under PepsiCo’s commitment to the Clean and Green Pakistan Initiative launched by the Prime Minister of Pakistan. To support the ‘access to safe water’ pillar of the Clean and Green Pakistan Initiative, PepsiCo is working with WaterAid to provide safe water through extensive addition and refurbishments of water filtration plants.

Speaking at the inauguration Special Assistant to Prime Minister for CDA Affairs, Mr. Ali Nawaz Awan said, “There is nothing more essential than access to safe water. I appreciate this important collaboration between PepsiCo and WaterAid in supporting the Government in ensuring access to safe water to marginalized communities in the capital.”

Mr. Mohammad Khosa, Senior Director at PepsiCo said, “Access to safe water is essential for public health. In partnership with WaterAid, we are on a mission to enable access to safe water for communities across the country and specially for those impacted by the rapid urbanization we are experiencing. This is in line with our global commitment to provide access to safe water to 100 million people by 2030.’

Mr. Siddiq Khan Country Representative WaterAid Pakistan commented, “WaterAid Pakistan is committed to supporting the Clean Green Pakistan Initiative by the Government of Pakistan and are happy that through this collaboration with PepsiCo we were able to reach vulnerable populations residing in the urban areas. PepsiCo and WaterAid Pakistan will continue to take initiative to provide access to safe water as part of the Clean Green Pakistan Movement.”

Increasing access to safe water is part of PepsiCo’s focus on continuing to integrate purpose into its business strategy and brands to become PepsiCo Positive – to deliver better outcomes for people and the planet, whilst enabling it to be a faster-growing and more resilient company. Through partnerships funded by The PepsiCo Foundation, the company’s philanthropic arm, PepsiCo has helped more than 55 million people gain access to safe water globally since 2006 and catalyzed nearly $700 million in additional funding to support safe water access investments in partnership with leading non-profits worldwide. The milestone marks significant progress towards PepsiCo’s goal of reaching 100 million people with safe water by 2030.
