Pakistan to bowl England by seeing their batting approach, Naseem Shah

RAWALPINDI, Nov 29 (APP):Pacer Naseem Shah is looking to rise to the occasion in the three-match Test series against England, saying he will be trying his best to bowl according to the situation and the team’s requirements.

The first Test between Pakistan and England is commencing on Friday in Rawalpindi. The 19-year-old Naseem, who has picked up 33 wickets in 13 Tests since making his debut in 2019, will be spearheading Pakistan’s fast bowling attack in absence of his new ball partner Shaheen Shah Afridi, who was ruled out of the series due to a knee injury.

“Obviously it makes a difference when a very good bowler of your team [Shaheen Afridi] gets unfit, but we will try to do our best by making good use of the new ball,” he told media at a press conference at Pindi Stadium on Tuesday.

He said Pakistan had a strong bowling line-up and it would bowl England by seeing what sort of batting approach they adopt.

“I don’t trust the pitch until I bowl the first ball. I have never checked the pitch before the match to gauge as how it will behave. I believe as a bowler you always need to bowl well everywhere in the world. A bowler-friendly pitch does not mean you start bowling carelessly,” he said.

He said Pakistan’s fast bowlers were working hard and were in great rhythm to perform. “They are also quite familiar with the conditions at the Pindi Stadium as they have been playing here in Pakistan Super League and domestic matches. I think all are ready, and hopefully will play positive cricket.”

To a query as to whether he will be trying to focus on taking Joe Root’s wicket, who is the world’s number one Test batter, he said Root was the top batter but while bowling he only concentrates to deliver his best. “No doubt, Joe Root is the world’s best batsman and it is always a challenge to bowl the best batsman. I always enjoy bowling the best batsmen,” he added.

To another query, he heaped praise on England’s seasoned fast bowler James, saying that the 40-year-old was a legend from whom he had learned.

“He knows everything about bowling as he has played everywhere in the world. I will continue learning from him. I think it is a big achievement for him that he is still playing. He is very fit and that shows how much hard work he has been doing,” Naseem added.

Pakistan will have to beat England to keep their hopes alive of moving to the next year’s final of the World Test Championship.

Pakistan squad for the England Tests: Babar Azam (c), Mohammad Rizwan (VC & wk), Abdullah Shafique, Abrar Ahmed, Azhar Ali, Faheem Ashraf, Haris Rauf, Imam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Wasim Jnr, Naseem Shah, Nauman Ali, Salman Ali Agha, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Saud Shakeel, Shan Masood and Zahid M

Ukraine war: Chornobaivka airbase, symbol of Russian defeat

From the start of the war, a military airfield and village just outside Kherson city achieved legendary status in Ukraine. Captured by Russian forces within days of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February, Chornobaivka was then repeatedly attacked by Ukrainian forces.

It became one of the most important battlefields of the war.

Russian hardware was airlifted in with the aim of reinforcing troops in the south. The initial ambition was to advance along the southern coast of Ukraine, first to Mykolaiv and then Odesa.

Most importantly, the airbase at Chornobaivka enabled Russian troops to steer clear of dangerous river crossings as they pushed to the west.

But occupying the base was to prove difficult. Russian helicopters and vehicles were destroyed and two Russian generals were killed there as Ukrainians forces picked off targets sometimes on a daily basis.

And that resistance gave birth to a symbol of Ukrainian glory and Russian defeat. Many Ukrainians saw Chornobaivka as representing their entire country, as Russia’s invasion strategy fell apart.

It was glorified in songs and paintings and Ukrainians turned to black humour as they watched Russian forces flying into the base again and again, taking on ever-increasing losses.

The name Chornobaivka became a war meme for Ukrainians, synonymous with mass Russian casualties.

Earlier this month Ukrainian recaptured Kherson city and Chornobaivka almost at the same time. Behind them Russian forces left a huge minefield and a graveyard of Russian weapons, vehicles and personnel.

Russia forces have never confirmed details of their losses in the south.

For weeks before the Russians pulled out, Ukraine’s military systematically targeted bridges, command points and arms depots. However, the ministry of defence in Moscow said they had suffered no losses of either soldiers or hardware during their retreat from the western bank of the Dnipro river.

Beyond the debris of military occupation, another story has emerged of a small Chornobaivka community next door to the airbase, cut off from the outside world for months and becoming a symbol of national resistance without knowing it.

“We got out just a couple of times per month to buy food. We didn’t go anywhere,” said Viktoria who until the war had worked as an operator at the airfield. “We grew carrots, beetroot and potatoes in our backyard.”

Days into the Russian occupation, on 8 March, she remembered going with a friend to buy bread: “The Russians arrived at the shop in a tank and shot in the air. I’d never seen a tank in a real life before.”

Months later, her old place of work lies in ruins.

Sitting on a bench in the centre of the village, Svitlana Miroshnichenko, told of her shock at seeing Russian troops abusing her country’s flag.

“When the Ukrainian flag was taken down, they trampled on it. Russians mocked the Ukrainian flag, they wiped their car windows with it. My heart was broken. Then they flew the Russian flag. We didn’t accept it.”

As they retreated from Kherson on 11 November, Russian forces destroyed all communications. Chornobaivka was off the grid and residents were unable to call their relatives.

A former teacher for 30 years at the local school, Svitlana talks of two former students killed on the battlefield and others still defending their country.

The next stop will be to rebuild damaged houses and restore the power supply, but after that Chornobaivka will have to tackle the tensions within the community that built up during eight months of occupation.

“Some people stayed under the Russian occupation. Others fled,” explains village leader Ihor Dudar.

“Some of them needed to evacuate their children. Others just felt a very strong fear. And now Chornobaivka residents who escaped feel that they are being judged for fleeing and getting too scared.”

Remaining in the village under Russian occupation posed a deadly threat. Local authorities estimate that Russian forces shot and killed at least 20 civilians in Chornobaivka. Four local residents are still being held captive by the Russians.

“The Russian military were driving past the shop. They gunned down two teenagers after they just asked them for cigarettes. These two 19-year-old teenagers were my neighbours,” Viktoria told the BBC.

Ihor Dudar showed pictures taken immediately afterwards of the two teenagers lying dead in a pool of blood. Ukrainian forces are investigating their deaths.

Ukrainians are now talking of setting up a war museum at the airfield. However, the war has not gone away.

Artillery shells continue to land very close to people’s homes here. But despite the danger, many residents believe that for them the worst is over.

Ukraine war: Russia hits out as Pope labels minority ethnic soldiers ‘cruel’

Russia has hit out at comments from the Pope that some minority groups of soldiers have behaved worse than others in the invasion of Ukraine.

The “cruellest” troops are generally Chechens and Buryats, Pope Francis told a US magazine.

He also labelled the Holodomor famine caused by the Kremlin in Ukraine in the 1930s a genocide.

Russia called the remarks a “perversion”, and said national groups were “one family”.

In an interview with America, a Jesuit magazine, Pope Francis was asked about his apparent reluctance to directly condemn Russia for the war.

In response he said he received “much information about the cruelty of the troops”.

“Generally, the cruellest are perhaps those who are of Russia but are not of the Russian tradition, such as the Chechens, the Buryats and so on,” he said.

The Pope added that “the one who invades is the Russian state”.

Chechens, an ethnic group originating in Chechnya, in the south-west of Russia, are mostly Muslim.

Buryats, a Mongol ethnic group indigenous to Buryatia, in eastern Siberia, traditionally follow Buddhist and shamanic belief systems.

Russia contains many republics with distinct ethnic and religious groups. The majority religion is Orthodox Christianity.

The Pope said he had spoken to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky several times by phone, and communicated with Russian President Vladimir Putin through the ambassador to the Holy See.

In apparent response to accusations of not directly condemning President Putin, he said: “Sometimes I try not to specify so as not to offend and rather condemn in general, although it is well known whom I am condemning. It is not necessary that I put a name and surname.”

Later in the interview the Pope added: “Everyone knows my stance, with Putin or without Putin, without naming him.”

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova condemned the comments, state-controlled news outlet RT reports.

“This is no longer Russophobia, it’s a perversion on a level I can’t even name,” she said.

“We are one family with Buryats, Chechens and other representatives of our multinational and multi-confessional country,” Ms Zakharova later wrote on Telegram.

Pope Francis also said he wanted to mark the anniversary of the Holodomor, calling it a genocide and a “historical antecedent” of the current conflict.

As many as four million Ukrainians died in this famine in 1932-33, caused by the collectivisation of farms under Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin.

Pakistani officials hold talks with Afghan minister after TTP calls off ceasefire

A high-level delegation headed by State Minister for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar is in Kabul to hold talks with Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Mutaqqi as the TTP called off their months-long ceasefire with Pakistan.

Khar arrived in Kabul Tuesday on a day-long visit during which she discussed matters of bilateral importance with Amir Khan Mutaqqi focusing on political consultations between the two governments.

Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Afghanistan Ambassador Mohammad Sadiq was also present.

Earlier on her arrival in the Afghan capital, Khar was received at the airport by Afghanistan’s Deputy Minister for Economy Abdul Latif Nazari and the Pakistan embassy’s Head of Mission in Kabul Ubaid-ur-Rahman Nizamani.

According to a Foreign Office statement, Hina Rabbani Khar held political consultations with Amir Khan Muttaqi.

“A range of bilateral issues of common interest including cooperation in education, health, trade and investment, regional connectivity, people-to-people contacts, and socioeconomic projects were discussed.”

Moreover, the issue of the TTP ceasefire is likely to come under discussion between the two sides.

“Ms Hina Khar will certainly convey the concerns about attacks on Pakistan security forces emanating from Afghanistan, regulating the movement of people to and from trade matters in view of the increased trade. Improved clearance process and facilities on Afghan side and finally assure the Afghan side of Pakistan’s humanitarian assistance,” former foreign secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani told The News.

TTP calls off ceasefire

Announcing the end of the ceasefire, the TTP leadership cited the latest military operation against their fighters in the Lakki Marwat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as a reason.

According to a report published in The News, Pakistani militants had become active in southern parts of KP and particularly in South Waziristan, North Waziristan, Bannu, Lakki Marwat, Tank and Dera Ismail Khan.

The government had to postpone the polio campaign in Lakki Marwat district on Monday due to frequent attacks by the militants on police and operation launched against them.

Several rounds of talks were held with the Taliban leaders in Afghanistan to find an amicable solution to the years-long armed conflict.

Religious leaders and tribal leaders were also involved and sent to Kabul to persuade the Pakistani Taliban to soften their demands.

The militants had lately withdrawn from certain demands but they wanted the government to restore the previous status of erstwhile Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) and their armed return to Pakistan.
