PDM to decide on no-confidence motion against govt: Bilawal

LAHORE, Mar 7 (DNA): Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has declared that the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) has the final say on bringing a no-confidence motion against the PTI government.

Addressing a joint press conference with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) stalwart and Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly Hamza Shehbaz at his Model Town residence in Lahore on Sunday, Bilawal said “The PDM will take a final decision on no-trust motion against the government and it will also decide about the timing of such a move.”

Bilawal maintained that it seemed 178 MNAs were not present in the National Assembly during polling on the vote of confidence in Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday.

“President Arif Alvi had already admitted that the prime minister had lost the support of the majority of the House,” he added.

“The president has accepted the opposition’s stance,” said Bilwal. “We just contested a senate election [but] the president of Pakistan has accepted that Khan Sahib has lost his majority and he asked him to prove his majority in the national assembly.”

Bilawal said that everyone wants to get rid of ‘Wasim Akram Plus’ and an ideal Chief Minister of Punjab.

“We have learned a lot from the past senate chairman election,” said Bilwal. “Had we not learned anything, we would have lost the secret ballot election in the National Assembly.”

The PPP chairman averred “We have learnt a lot from the past elections and now we will stay united and we will succeed.”  He said “We will fight this government in a democratic way. If we stay united we can take down any puppet government whose fearful leader rushed for the vote of confidence.”

He termed the vote of confidence a reflection of Imran Khan’s inner fears.  Bilawal said they will approach every senator to seek vote for the chairman. “We will also contact PML-Q in this regard. I will visit the residence of Chaudhry Brothers as the PML-Q was once an ally of the PPP government,” he added.

On his part, said during their meeting the PPP chairman congratulated him on his release from prison and he greeted Bilawal on the victory of Yousaf Raza Gilani in the Senate elections. said he had learnt a lot from the Charter of Democracy and they will make important decisions from the PDM platform. “Today poor people are not finding any medicines. Cotton and wheat production have gone down,” he added.

He said whatever happened outside the parliament on Saturday was not good for democracy.

Earlier, received the PPP leader who was accompanied by senior PPP leaders including Yousaf Raza Gilani and Qamar Zaman Qaira. During their meeting, they discussed the political situation prevailing in the country and the upcoming election of Senate chairman.  Moreover, Bilawal appreciated Hamza Shehbaz’s resilience during his stint in the prison.

According to the sources, Bilawal extended every possible support to the PML-N in Punjab, while Hamza Shehbaz said the decision of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) will be accepted about when to present a no-confidence move in Punjab. Sunday’s meeting at Model Town was not the first direct contact between Bilawal Bhutto and Hamza Shehbaz.

On Thursday last, Bilawal had telephoned Hamza Shehbaz and congratulated him on the victory of Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) candidate Yousuf Raza Gilani in the recently-held Senate polls.  Both the leaders agreed to pace up the joint struggle from the 11-party opposition alliance PDM’s platform during their telephonic conversation.

It may be recalled that Hama Shehbaz got bail just a few days ago before the Senate polls and also attended the dinner hosted by Bilawal for leaders of the PDM leaders a day before the Senate elections. Gilani defeated PTI candidate Abdul Hafeez Shaikh with a margin of five votes 169:164. Abdul Hafeez Shaikh shook hands and congratulated Gilani after the Senate election, however, the cabinet minister termed it “the victory of the money”.

It is noteworthy that Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has convened a meeting of heads of the alliance’s constituent parties on Monday to devise a post-Senate elections strategy. DNA

Solution to Cyprus issue difficult, but possible: EU foreign policy chief

“While the road ahead will not be easy, solutions can be found,” EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said in his comments after separate meetings with Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’s (TRNC) President Ersin Tatar and Greek Cypriot administration’s leader Nikos Anastasiadis.

A solution to the Cyprus issue is difficult but possible, the EU foreign policy chief said Saturday. “While the road ahead will not be easy, solutions can be found,” said Josep Borrell after separate meetings with Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’s (TRNC) President Ersin Tatar and Greek Cypriot administration’s leader Nikos Anastasiadis.

Borrell said he encouraged both sides to seize the opportunity of the 5+1 meeting in Geneva in April, and sit at the negotiation table prepared to compromise.

“The European Union fully supports the resumption of the Cyprus settlement process under UN auspices, as soon as possible,” he said.

Noting that the process is not supposed to start from scratch, Borrell said: “There is a framework, including UN Security Council resolutions, with convergences to build on, with the support of the UN, the Guarantor Powers and the European Union.”

“It will not be an easy process but it can be done, for the benefit of all Cypriots, for Europe, and for regional stability,” he underlined.

After meeting with Borrell on Friday, Tatar said the participation of the EU in the 5+1 meetings as an observer will not be right, and Turkish Cypriots will not approve of that, on the grounds that “they cannot be expected to be objective.”

CYPRUS DISPUTE

The island of Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when a Greek Cypriot coup was followed by violence against the island’s Turks and Turkey’s intervention as a guarantor power.

It has seen an on-and-off peace process in recent years, including a failed 2017 initiative in Switzerland under the auspices of guarantor countries Turkey, Greece, and the UK.

The TRNC was founded in 1983.

In 2004, the plan of then-UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan for a solution was accepted by the Turkish Cypriots but rejected by the Greek Cypriots in twin referendums.

The 2017 Crans-Montana Conference in Switzerland held with the participation of the guarantor countries — Turkey, Greece, and the UK — ended in failure.

The informal 5+1 meeting on the Cyprus issue, which will be held in Geneva, Switzerland on 27-29 April 2021, will seek to determine whether common ground exists for the parties to negotiate a lasting solution to the Cyprus problem within a foreseeable horizon. It will be attended by two parties on the island, the three guarantor countries of Turkey, Greece and the UK, and the UN.

While Greece and the Greek Cypriot administration support a federation on Cyprus, Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) insist on a two-state solution reflecting the realities on the island.

Turkey welcomes Egypt’s respectful attitude

ANKARA, MAR 7: It is a very important development that Egypt has made a tender on hydrocarbon exploration in the eastern Mediterranean respecting Turkey’s continental shelf limits, the Turkish national defense minister said on Saturday.

“We have many historical and cultural values in common with Egypt. When they are put in use, we consider that there may be different developments in the coming days,” Hulusi Akar said during the Blue Homeland 2021 tactical exercise.

He said Turkey considers works on such agreements and memorandums of understanding with Egypt under the maritime jurisdiction limits that the country declared to the UN.

“In this regard, our Foreign Ministry continues the necessary work in coordination with relevant institutions, organizations, and ministries,” he said, expecting to get positive results from these efforts.

Akar followed the Blue Homeland 2021 activities from the Turkish seismic research vessel Oruç Reis together with high-ranking military officials. He also addressed the personnel in the ships that took part in the exercise via video conference.

“You are not only protecting our rights, concerns, and interests in our seas but also making an important contribution to world peace and stability by waving our flag in all the world’s seas,” Akar said.Highlighting the importance of these exercises, he thanked all who contributed to the planning and performance of the exercise. The observer day activity of the Blue Homeland ended with a parade at sea.

Last August, Turkey resumed energy exploration in the Eastern Mediterranean after Greece and Egypt signed a controversial maritime delimitation deal, spurning Turkey’s goodwill gesture in halting the exploration.

Egypt last August signed an agreement with Greece, delimiting their borders in the Eastern Mediterranean, but some details of the deal only recently emerged, including Egypt respecting Turkey’s maritime territory.

Declaring the Greek-Egyptian deal “null and void,” Turkey authorized the Oruç Reis to continue its activities in an area within Turkey’s continental shelf.

TURKEY IN FAVOR OF DIALOGUE WITH GREECE

Drawing attention to issues between Turkey and Greece, Akar said: “We are in favor of solving problems through dialogue in line with international law, good neighborly relations, and we are open to talks.”

Turkey has consistently opposed Greece’s efforts to declare an exclusive economic zone based on small islands near Turkish shores, violating the interests of Turkey, the country with the longest coastline in the Mediterranean.

Ankara has also said energy resources near Cyprus must be shared fairly between the TRNC and the Greek Cypriot administration of Southern Cyprus.

RELATIONS WITH NATO

Akar pointed out that countries carry out various exercises under international law to develop their armed forces, test their systems, and increase the skills of their personnel.

“Our Blue Homeland 2021 tactical exercise is an exercise carried out entirely within the framework of international law, to increase our experience, knowledge, and skills,” he said.

He also said the Turkish land, naval, and air forces along with Gendarmerie General Command and Coast Guard elements participated in the exercise.

“At the same time with the drill, we simultaneously continue our other national, international, and NATO missions with the same determination,” Akar noted.

He added: “In a period of rising risks, threats, and dangers, NATO solidarity has become even more important. In this regard, we have a very constructive, planned, and programmed relationship within NATO.”

Riders show huge interest in EU-support cycling event

Shujaat Hamza

ISLAMABAD, MAR 7: Cars disappeared on Jinnah Avenue on Sunday to make way for ‘Cycling Sunday’ and hundreds of cyclists and walkers of all ages and abilities.

The joyful and carefree moment highlighted a serious message: the need for sustainable means of transportation in light of climate change and rapid urbanization. It also encouraged citizens to make healthier and more sustainable lifestyle choices, for themselves, the community and the environment.

The event was organized by Urban Innovation, Islamabad Capital Territory Administration and the Islamabad Cycling Association. Support was provided by the European Union. Every first Sunday of the month, Jinnah Avenue, the capital’s primary thoroughfare, is open exclusively for cyclists from Centaurus mall to D-Chowk.

Taking advantage of the safe, traffic-free space, cyclists participated in fun races with categories for all ages, skills parkour for kids and other activities. And they simply enjoyed a car- and carefree ride on the central avenue. Cities around the world are confronted with problems such as traffic congestion, air and noise pollution, and road accidents. In response to these pressing issues, policy-makers are increasingly looking for ways to develop more eco-friendly, diverse and flexible transportation systems, and influence behaviors to encourage a shift away from the reliance on private cars.

Cycling is considered an ideal alternative, not only for shorter distances, due to its cost-effectiveness, and multiple benefits in terms of health and environment. Cycling Sunday promotes cycling as a safe mobility in line with the Prime Minister’s Clean and Green Pakistan initiative. On the eve of the International Women’s Day, the event particularly encouraged women to become cyclists and underlined the need to address the concerns of women in terms of safety and access to public spaces and transportation. Naveed Iftikhar, founder of Urban Innovation and one of the initiator of the event, said, “The feeling of cycling in the city center is something which I aspired to regenerate through this event. Such events will invite people to consider cycling as a great option not only for leisure, but also for commuting and in daily life. Finally, we call on the government to create safe spaces for cyclists to encourage cycling as a sustainable means of transportation.”

Haroon, Secretary of Islamabad Cycling Association, said, “There are more and more people who are cycling in their free time to stay fit and as a sport. It is great to see this trend growing and we are delighted to bring it to the heart of the city with races for the ambitious riders, but also just for fun.”

The European Union supported the initiative in light of its global priorities related to climate change, but also as cycling has become a major trend in Europe in the last years. Transport accounts for nearly 30 percent of greenhouse gas emissions and this figure continues to rise as demand grows.

The European Green Deal is a set of policy initiatives by the EU with the overarching aim of making Europe climate neutral in 2050. This means moving to more sustainable transportation, by putting users first and providing them with more affordable, accessible, healthier and cleaner alternatives – and promoting active modes of transport such as cycling. Covid-19 has given a boost to the trend seen across most European cities.

DNA 7-4

More and more Europeans are using a bicycle in their daily lives. And cities are adapting by providing more space for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport to solve traffic problems and make the cities more livable and sustainable for all. In this context, the EU is looking forward to working with the authorities to share experiences and create awareness of the potential of cycling and other active and clean modes of transport.

Pakistan to benefit from ongoing sessions of NPC and CPPCC: Gwadar Pro

BEIJING, March 7 : Pakistan being an important strategic ally of China will be a beneficiary of the decisions to be made by the going annual sessions of the National People’s Congress (NPC) and the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), says a report published by Gwadar Pro on Sunday.

Both the countries are also celebrating 70 Years of their diplomatic relations and in a recently hosted ceremony simultaneously in Beijing and Islamabad wherein official logo of the celebrations has been inaugurated between the two states kick starting the festivities of togetherness.
The recent announcement by President Xi Jinping about victory against the poverty is an important milestone achieved before the opening of the two sessions. Poverty alleviation has remained at the top agenda of the government of China to help ensure people’s wellbeing and development.

According to the report, as China’s economy is growing and steadily rising, this bodes well for Pakistan. This steady growth and poverty alleviation announcement made recently by China will create a strong impact on Pakistan’s economic progress.

This is because of increasing engagement of Pakistan’s economy with China, not only through CPEC projects and infrastructure development, but the ongoing exports, imports, technological advancement will help Pakistan have an overall comprehensive economic development.

China, a country of 1.4 billion population is offering huge lucrative opportunities for countries like Pakistan to expand the trade base and avail the opportunities offered by China especially in terms of business and development options.

As a result of the China-Pakistan Free Trade Agreement has its Phase II established, there is a growing chance for Pakistani businesses to promote the export in a Zero tariff lucrative business environment.

As Chinese domestic market is widening with an increase in purchasing power as a result of the zero poverty, this gives another important opportunity for Pakistan to recover from its economic challenges to avail this “dual circulation” economic strategy by China to solve the problem of trade imbalance.

With China’s overall development agenda and the discussions during the two sessions will also focus on the BRI development plans, CPEC as a crown of BRI will benefit at the large scale.

As a result of the decision made in the two sessions, it is expected that there will be continuation of the similar level of the cooperation between China and Pakistan for collaboration in the ongoing projects under CPEC.

The Chinese next five-year plan to be discussed in the two session can be dubbed as plans of opportunities for Pakistan.

The report says, the two of the main political bodies are to finalize the development plans for the country’s projections and policies for the next year in the realm of military, diplomacy, trade, environment, and other important sectors.
Two sessions are important to increase not only national unity and cohesion amongst the length and breadth of China, help achieve country’s goals but also to reach out to global partners and reflect the steady development and engagement plans.

This year’s meeting is happening at an important stage when the Communist Party of China (CPC) is celebrating its 100 years of establishment and there is a start of the 14th Five Year Plan Period (2021-2025) for Social and Economic Development targets for 2035 along with the fact that China is recovering from the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

With all the challenges ahead, China is all set to make important announcements related to its goals in development in all spheres. Despite challenges of the pandemic, China has maintained its steady development in 2020 with GDP growth of 2.3 percent reflecting Chinese economy’s resilient nature and potential to sustain its steady growth,

It is also important to note that the recent announcement by President Xi Jinping about victory against the poverty is also an important milestone achieved before the opening of the two sessions. Poverty alleviation has remained at the top agenda of the government of China to help ensure people’s wellbeing and development.
