INDIA SPREADING FAKE NEWS ABOUT PAKISTAN FOR FIFTEEN YEARS

Ambassador Zaheer Janjua says full investigation report shows that the Indian networks controlled more than ten NGOs that were accredited to the United Nations but were inactive. That way they could go about their business undisturbed

BRUSSELS (DNA) -The Brussels NGO EU Disinfo Lab dropped a small bomb in international diplomatic circles at the end of December last year: their research showed that India spread false news about Pakistan for 15 years. What does that mean for the fragile relationship between India and sworn nemesis Pakistan? Zaheer Aslam Janjua, Pakistani ambassador for the EU, Belgium and Luxembourg, explains the Pakistani position.

The channels and media networks were active in Brussels and Geneva, from where they broadcast “news” to the world. The aim was mainly to portray Pakistan in a negative light. The full investigation report shows that the Indian networks controlled more than ten NGOs that were accredited to the United Nations but were inactive. That way they could go about their business undisturbed.

In addition, the Indian networks also registered more than 550 domain names for websites and employed fake journalists. “The activities of this network are part of India’s fruitless attempt to cast Pakistan in a bad light,” said Zaheer Aslam Janjua, Pakistani Ambassador to the EU, Belgium and Luxembourg. “It wanted to destabilize Pakistan and fuel Indian state-sponsored and sub-nationalist tendencies. We have provided extensive and irrefutable evidence in the past of India’s support for terrorist groups in Afghanistan and anti-Pakistani sub-nationalist groups around the world. ”

Fake opinions

Already in 2019, the researchers at EU Disinfo Lab came across several online disinformation campaigns and a network of 265 fake media outlets in 65 countries, spreading negative content about Pakistan. The campaign turned out to be EP Today, a fake Brussels news magazine targeting MEPs and external politicians with interests in India.

MPs were also regularly asked to publish opinion pieces to discredit Pakistan. The mission of the operation was to discredit countries in conflict with India – mainly Pakistan, but also to a small extent China – and subsequently strengthen the Modi government. According to Janjua, the intention was to operate worldwide: “India has spread fake news to smear Pakistan’s image and mislead the world. But the report has exposed India’s activities and confirmed Pakistan’s position of a systematic and organized campaign against Pakistan. This report is therefore very important. It will take a lot of time and resources before we can undo the consequences of the fifteen-year hate campaign. ”

One step for India, two for Pakistan

“We believe that access to free and truthful information is the fundamental right of every human being,” says Janjua. “We share the concerns of the EU and its Member States about the misuse of the online space by government and non-state actors. Anyone involved in manipulating information and spreading fake news should be held accountable. We have approached the EU and the Belgian authorities to urge them to become acquainted with the reports from EU Disninfo Lab. And we have asked them to take action against the actors involved in the abuse of their institutions and territories, who have violated the code of conduct. ”

Janjua clarifies that Pakistan wants friendly relations with all its neighbors, including India, and has always been ready to work towards a solution to all pending issues, including those surrounding Jammu and Kashmir. “Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan also said during his inauguration that” If India takes one step, Pakistan would take two steps to peace. “

Tricks

But according to Janjua India did not listen to that. “Rather than responding positively to Pakistan’s peace proposals, India has unilaterally and illegally perpetuated the special constitutional status of illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir. India also continued to plan, finance and perpetuate terrorism in our territory. Pakistan believes in a peaceful settlement of disputes with India. However, they have shown no willingness to enter into a dialogue about the open disputes with Pakistan. ”

According to Janjua, Pakistan believes that peace is a sine qua non for the region’s economic growth and development, including poverty reduction. By spreading misinformation and falsehoods, India continues to disrupt the atmosphere threatening regional peace and security. “India must realize that it cannot cast a shadow on Pakistan’s international standing, nor divert the attention of the international community from the human rights situation in India. Indian tricks to spread misinformation are doomed to failure, ”says Janjua. “There are already so many obstacles that make a renewed rapprochement between Pakistan and India difficult. Such actions would hamper the prospects for peace even more. ”

And what about Kashmir?

According to Janjua, Indian publications have further emphasized the despair felt by the Indian government. “It was not only an attempt to slander Pakistan, it was also a failed attempt to cast a negative light on the legitimate movement of the people of Kashmir for the right to self-determination.”

“There is great frustration about this among the Indian government. After all, it fails to understand, let alone recognize, the struggle for self-determination of the Kashmiri people, ”says Janjua.

That right is enshrined in international law and United Nations Security Council resolutions. “The clash between Jammu and Kashmir can only be resolved by implementing UN Security Council resolutions. The international community must strive for a peaceful settlement of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, taking into account the wishes of the people of Kashmir, who want lasting peace and stability in the region. ”

Special committee

On January 16 this year, the EU Disinfo Lab investigation was discussed in the Special Committee on Foreign Interference in all democratic processes in the EU in the European Parliament. “The work of the Special Committee on Foreign Interference in all democratic processes in the EU has been important and welcomed developments,” says Janjua. Alexandre AlaPhilippe and Gary Machado (respectively executive director and managing director of EU Disinfo Lab, ed.) Explained in their testimonials the complex system of fake news outlets, websites, NGOs and think tanks involved in a systematic disinformation campaign against Pakistan. The European Parliament has appointed a special committee to investigate the content of the report, in particular the allegation of exploitation of EU institutions by this particular network. ” Undoubtedly to be continued.

PRGMEA urges govt to enhance export through support for industry in Budget 2021-22

DNA

LAHORE: The Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PRGMEA) has called for steps to promote industrialization and enhance exports in its budget proposals for 2021-22. PRGMEA vice chairman Adeeb Iqbal urged the government to make the next budget business-friendly, lower cost of production, allow early refunds and relax import policy for industrial raw material.

He said the GSP Plus status is a golden opportunity, which exporters could exploit to meet the export target. The value-added textile sector has been the main driver of the economy for the last 50 years in terms of foreign currency earnings and jobs creation.

In its budget recommendations, PRGMEA sought revival of statutory regulatory order (SRO) 1125 in its true shape, reintroducing the system of no payment no refund of sales tax for the five export-oriented sectors of textile, leather, carpets, surgical and sports goods for a year.

All stuck up claims of exporters’ customs rebates and sales tax rebates should be released, it said. The apparel industry should be allowed to import fabric under SRO 492 scheme instead of the Duty and Tax Remission Scheme (DTRE) as the country’s weaving industry is unable to fulfill the demands of fashion wear with foreign buyers demanding new garments based on G-3, G4 and technical fabric material. The DTRE is quite complicated and only limited exporters can avail of imports under that facility while 97 per cent of small and medium enterprises can be helped under SRO 492, which was in force earlier, it said.

Adeeb Iqbal also proposed that cotton yarn and fabric, the major raw material of the apparel sector, should be exempted from all duties and taxes to encourage value addition. PRGMEA suggested that all taxes and duties on import of polyester staple fiber, including anti-dumping duty, should be abolished to reduce the cost of production to compete in the market.

Accusing government agencies of harassing the textile industry, he said social security and other taxes should be merged and deducted at the source. There is no alternative industry or service sector other than textile that has the potential to benefit the economy with foreign currency earnings and new job creation. The PRGMEA North zone chief said that close consultation with stakeholders could help determine measures for ensuring viability and competitiveness in the international market. He also stressed the need for enhancing the product lines of exports and for that purpose some incentives should also be announced by the government.

GOVT URGED TO PROMOTE THEATRE AS A TRADITIONAL FORM OF EXPRESSION

DNA

ISLAMABAD, MAR 27 – Devcom-Pakistan webinar, organized to mark World Theatre Day, asked the provincial authorities and the federal government to allocate sufficient funds to efficiently implement and execute the cultural policies dusting in the shelves.

Islamabad – The experts speaking at a webinar urged the government to make theatre part of the educational curriculum to engage youth in meaningful communication for social change. Hundreds of social issues have emerged in the absence of cultural exposure. The unwarranted material has replaced our traditional performing arts because the society was not engaged in our own cultural entertainment avenues. Our rich cultural heritage and performing arts have seen the brunt of negligence, lack of funds to promote performing arts, and society’s negative attitude towards the professional engaged in it.

The devolution of culture to provinces has played havoc after the 18th amendment in the constitution of the country instead of promoting it more diligently. What the arts councils are promoting in different cities in the name of culture and theatre is not what we need to promote. That is all the substandard version of the culture and theatre we should stop. Our theatre should emerge from the values of literature, social and moral standards. Pakistan’s heritage history is about 8000 years old and has traces of dance and theatre as well. We shall educate and continue with the historic heritage.

Development Communications Network (Devcom-Pakistan) and DTN jointly organized the webinar on Saturday to mark the World Theatre Day. The panel of experts included former managing director PTV and the founder of the Ajoka Theatre and playwright Shahid Mahmood Nadeem, founder of Tahrik-e-Niswan Cultural Group and classical dancer, women and theatre activist Sheema Kermani, CPEC expert and the chief executive officer of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Board of Investment Daud Hassan Butt, Programme Executive Pakistan national Council of the Arts (PNCA) Waqar Azeem, advisor to the president National Defense University Lt. General (Retd) Raza Muhammad, director theatre walay Safeer ullah Khan, faculty member Iqra University Karachi campus Ali Kazmi, faculty member Islamia University Bahawalpur (IUB) Agha Sadaf Mehdi, Ayesha Hassan and Dr Khushboo Ejaz from Lahore, and Devcom-Pakistan Executive Director Munir Ahmed.

Shahid Mahmood Nadeem said public-private partnerships are essential to develop an umbrella regime of theatre to engage different stakeholders for national coherence and international diplomacy. Youth being 62 percent of the population may be engaged in to boost their creativity, confidence and to improve their social and professional calibre. The traditional theatre is a very important component of our culture and heritage. We need to recognize and appreciate it by promoting it for mass communication. The educational institutions and universities can play their central role in this regard if the embedded training is conducted and the youth is engaged in indigenous and traditional forms of theatre.

Sheema Kermani said federal and provincial governments have to make traditional performing arts including dance and theatre their priority to make the culture and its associates survive. Due to negligence and lack of opportunities, many theatre halls have been closed. We have a very impressive cultural policy but dusting on shelves. All forms of culture shall be part of the syllabus in schools and promoted as a respectable form of expression and creativity. She also suggested having grants and interest-free financial aid to develop academies and institutes for the training, development and promotion of theatre and other forms of cultural expression.

Daud Hassan Butt acknowledged the effort in promoting arts and craft and role of people to people contact for bilateral and inter-communal communication and understanding. He stated that initiatives like Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) should be used to promote people-to-people contact, cultural promotion and engaging citizens in history. Several initiatives in this regard have been taken by the Chinese government, and CPEC may be leveraged to establish a consortium to engage cultural and art institutions from both sides.

He recommended that the cultural segment may be included in trade, investment and businesses road shows. Cultural diplomacy may be used for promoting a true and positive perception for Pakistan and to attract tourists and investors. Some startups may be encouraged to step in this field in the media and culture as a business venture.

Munir Ahmed said theatre is the languages of masses and a traditional way of societal expression, storytelling and entertainment. The joy, happiness and inner-satisfaction comes from the interactive and live performances which have restricted many taboos associated with the cultural performances. Theatre has played a significant role in presenting ideas and ideologies before the audience in a very natural way. We need to engage youth in many ways to educate the masses about the contemporary issues to bring a social change we are looking for to make our society a vibrant and dynamic one.=DNA

Addressing the meeting, Sardar Yasir Ilyas Khan, President ICCI said that the governments in many countries have provided significant financial relief to businesses for enabling them to combat the impact of Covid-19 pandemic, but in Pakistan instead of providing relief, businesses were being closed twice in a week, which would prove very harmful with detrimental impact on the economy as it would cause permanent closure of a large number of businesses and render thousands of people jobless.

FBR had also been requested multiple times by ICCI to allow tax filers to pay their taxes in instalments or offer tax payers a deferred filing date in order to give some relaxation to businesses that have suffered losses in billions nationwide. He said that the business community was very satisfied with Chief Commissioner Islamabad Amir Ali Ahmed and Deputy Commissioner Hamza Shafqaat because they have adopted a cooperative approach towards businesses and have facilitated them throughout the entire covid-19 scenario, which was rather commendable and all traders appreciated the district administration for their proactive role in supporting local businesses, however, the NCOC was making decisions for business closure without any consultation with the business community, which was not a wise approach.

He urged that being the key stakeholders of the economy, the government should take all important economic decisions in consultation with the business community especially the Chamber of Commerce in order to save the economy from further contraction.

The market representatives shared many ideas with President ICCI to keep businesses running by implementation of SOPs and authorized him to negotiate with the ICT Administration to convince the government for closure of businesses once in a week as opposed to two days so that the business community does not suffer any further and we can all work towards economic revival after the induced recession which we are all going through due to covid-19.=DNA
