BEIJING WINTER OLYMPICS 2022: NO POLITICS OVER SPORTS

In July 2015, at the 128th IOC Session held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia,  Beijing was elected as the host city for Winter Olympic 2022. Beijing Olympic 2022 is an international winter multi-sport event scheduled from 4 to 20 February 2022 in Beijing, China. It will be the first-ever  Winter Olympics planned to be held in China, the fourth in East Asia, and the last of three consecutive Olympics that took place in East Asia, following the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea and the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. Beijing has the honor to be the eleventh city to host the Olympic Games twice. Still, the first to have hosted both the Summer and Winter Games, having previously hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics already.

The city projects include four existing indoor venues purposely built for the 2008 Summer Olympics. The Beijing National Stadium (commonly known as the “Bird’s Nest”) will be used again as the ceremony venue. All other skiing events will be held in Taizicheng Area in Chongli District, Zhangjiakou city, Hebei province. It is 220 km from downtown Beijing.

Games are promoted for good health and better physiques. All healthy nations promote sports to ensure general public health. Sports teach us discipline, self-control, and tolerance. Sports are being used to stimulate diplomacy and understanding. It is common practice that friendly nations exchange sports delegations and organize friendly matches to promote harmony and goodwill.

The Olympic Games, which initially started in ancient Greece as many as 3,000 years ago, were restored in the late 19th century and have become the world’s preeminent sporting competition.

The first modern-day Olympics were held in Athens, Greece, in 1896. However, the Olympics indeed took off as a regular international sporting event after 1924, when the VIII Games were held in Paris. Around 3,000 athletes (with more than 100 women among them) from diversified 44 nations contested that year, and for the first time, the Games included a closing ceremony.

The Winter Olympics debuted that year, comprising such events as figure skating, ice hockey, bobsledding, and the biathlon. Eighty years later, when the 2004 Summer Olympics reverted to Athens for the first time in more than a century, nearly 11,000 athletes from a record 201 countries participated. In a gesture that joined both ancient and modern Olympic customs, the shotput competition that year was held at the site of the traditional Games in Olympia.

All preparations are underway, and China has committed to make the event a historic one. The Beijing Organising Committee for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games has been constituted and is a public institution with legal prestige, in-charge of the organization, coordination of all related matters, and the preparations and delivery of 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

China has made tremendous developments in all sectors, including sports. China has the capacity and strong will to promote sports for the public good. It is believed that sports should be encouraged for International understanding and harmony. Sportsmen are goodwill Ambassadors globally.
However, some of the Western Countries are posed to boycott the Beijing Winter Olympics. It reminds us of the cold-war era. In the past, two prominent Olympics boycotts—of the 1936 Berlin Summer Games and the 1980 Moscow Summer Games were counterproductive. It is desired that the Western World should learn from past experience and should not politicize sports.
As a matter of fact, few nations are fabricating false narratives to bargain with China over political issues. They might use boycott as a bargaining chip while negotiating with China on political fronts. However, China warned that boycott would be an unspecified “robust Chinese response.”It is desired that sports should be used to promote peace, harmony, and goodwill. Sports should not be used as a tool for political coercion. We must learn from past mistakes and should avoid repeating them again. Wish a successful Beijing Winter Olympic 2022!

INQUIRY REVEALS WHY CHICKEN, EGG PRICES WENT UP IN PAKISTAN

ISLAMABAD, May 10 (DNA): The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP)
has revealed that 19 poultry feed companies have been involved in “price
coordination” which led to repeated increase in prices of chicken and
eggs.

An inquiry conducted by the CCP stated, “Poultry feed comprises
approximately 76-80 % of the cost of broiler meat and eggs. Therefore,
the hike in feed prices has affected the prices of chicken and eggs,
which are the most commonly consumed high protein foods.”

The enquiry into the poultry industry revealed that 19 poultry feed
companies have been involved in price coordination and their
anti-competitive conduct has caused a rise in the price of poultry feed.

Poultry feed comprises approximately 75% to 80 % of the cost of broiler
meat and eggs. Therefore, the hike in feed prices has affected the
prices of chicken and eggs—the most commonly consumed high protein foods
in the country.

The CCP’s enquiry revealed that from December 2018 to December 2020, the
feed mills work together to raise the poultry feed prices by Rs825 per
50 kilogrammes, making the feed 32% costlier for the poultry farmers.

The data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics for September 2020 shows
that chicken prices rose by 18.31% and eggs by 5.2%. The rise in these
prices coincided with an increase in feed prices by almost Rs100 per
bag.

In October 2020, after another price increase by poultry feed mills (by
Rs125 on layer and 175 on broiler feed), the chicken prices rose by
26.62% and eggs by 23.81% as compared to the previous month.

In November 2020, poultry feed prices rose by Rs. 150 per bag, and
subsequently, the prices of chicken and eggs rose by 20.76% and 5.23%.
In December 2020, a Rs250 increase in poultry feed led to the prices of
chicken and eggs to rise by 3.21% and 14.08%, respectively.

The CCP took a suo motu notice of the concerns and complaints against
the inflated prices registered through the PM Citizens Portal and the
CCP’s own online complaint management system. Citizens alleged that
leading mills have colluded to raise feed prices.

In February 2021, the CCP raided farms of two major poultry feed
producers and seized “crucial” evidence showing price change
coordination.

The record revealed that officials of 19 feed mills were using an active
WhatsApp group where one feed producer would announce the price increase
and the rest expressing their willingness to follow suit. They would
also discuss new prices and the date they will be implemented from, and
evidence suggests that all these decisions were enforced.

The enquiry also found that mills carried out price changes between
December 2018 and December 2020 in a coordinated manner in short
intervals at least 11 times. In addition, the data revealed that not
only were price revisions made on the exact dates, but the amounts of
price change were also similar.

An analysis of poultry input costs shows that maize, which is the
primary component of feed, constitutes 55% to 60% in terms of physical
usage in feed and contributes approximately 40% to the cost.

Maize witnessed a bumper crop in 2020 and was abundantly available.
Moreover, in the fiscal year 2019-20, maize prices fell by 7% as
compared to the previous year, and in the first quarter of FY21, were 22
% lower than 2019-20.

On the other hand, soybean meal, another critical raw material, saw
inflated prices. However, a rise in input prices it has been witnessed
cannot be used as a justification to increase feed prices uniformly as
each mill has a different cost structure and business model.

Poultry feed mills are each other’s competitors, and any discussion and
coordination on prices is prohibited under Section 4 of the Competition
Act, 2010.

Following the findings of the enquiry report, CCP says it will be
issuing show-cause notices to poultry feed companies involved in the
violation of rules. DNA

MAKE NAB SELF ACCOUNTABILITY EFFECTIVE!

Attiya Munawer

NAB is the foremost institution of accountability in Pakistan, there are good and bad people in every institution, qualified people bring good name to the institution, while incompetent people bring disrepute to the whole institution, but despite all this, institutions are expected to perform well. The general reputation of the NAB is that of a good institution, its chairman JavedIqbalis a retired Supreme Court adjudicator who speaks of impartial accountability and strives for it. While the NAB makes huge recoveries from corrupt people, it also treats the victims. Propaganda against the NAB is also carried out by those who come under strict accountability, which does not affect the performance and commitment of the NAB but when the NAB is questioned by the Supreme Court and it is said that the officers sitting in the NAB are committing big frauds, then the role and performance of the NAB begin to be questioned.

There is no doubt that justice-based accountability leads to the strength of any democratic country and its institutions. A Justice-based accountability system not only brings qualified and reputable people to the forefront of politics, but also encourages people to enter the public service sector, but most of our accountability institutions and accountability processes have been used for their own purposes. While the justice institutions have been dancing to the tune of the administration and giving decisions as they see fit, the people who run the accountability body have also been found to be involved in immoral activities. In the light of this situation, the esteemed courts have to remark that NAB officers are committing big frauds and the chairman NAB has remained silent.

Whenever the performance of the NAB is questioned, the Chairman NAB has never remained silent, always defending the institution to the fullest, and where the performance is clear, any shortcomings in the institution are also rectified. However, if the esteemed court has pointed out the involvement of NAB officers in major frauds, then it is a matter of concern for the NAB, as the role of its people should be most transparent in the country. If its own people are found involved in corruption and irregularities, then the accountability process will become meaningless. If the perpetrators of dereliction of duty are identified by the esteemed judiciary or complaints are received from the general public, then the Chairman NAB should take immediate departmental action against such people instead of remaining silent.

Concerning the NAB, there is already a general perception among the people that the NAB does not prosecute the accused even after making cases against corrupt elements, keeping the accused in custody for years, and conducting investigations, the accused cannot be convicted by the courts. The reason for this is also considered to be corruption in the institution. Despite the decision of Chairman NAB to rid the corrupt elements of the institution, two NAB officers were sacked three years ago after being found guilty of taking bribes. The accused have filed a petition in the High Court against their dismissal on which the court had directed the NAB to complete the inquiry within three months, but the NAB officers, sympathizing with their petty brothers, did not feel the need to complete the inquiry against these corrupt officers for three years. In this context, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court seems to be right in saying that the scam was deliberate so that the case would be spoiled and the culprits could be saved from punishment.

Undoubtedly, like other institutions, there are some black sheep in NAB who are deliberately part of the irregularities. Such people involved in irregularities in the institution do not deserve any concessions.Such people also cause mistrust between the two institutions. Following the remarks of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, it has become imperative for the Chairman to devise a new strategy to root out corruption from the NAB. Instead of monitoring the performance of the NAB, steps should be taken to rectify the culture of the NAB and reorganize the institution, so that the looted wealth can be recovered, corrupt elements can be held accountable and corruption can be discouraged, and the institution of NAB is made more effective in its self-accountability process. At the same time, attention must be paid to bring the cases under investigation to a logical conclusion, so that negative perceptions about the national institution are eliminated and accountability is possible without discrimination. The NAB should be expected to take immediate steps to maintain its confidence in the Supreme Court and the people.

President John Mahama Appointed As AU High Representative for Somalia

The Chairperson of the Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has announced the appointment of H.E John Dramani Mahama, former President of the Republic of Ghana, as his High Representative to Somalia.

As the High Representative for Somalia’s political track, President Mahama will work with the Somali stakeholders, to reach a mutually acceptable compromise towards an all-encompassing resolution for the holding of Somali elections in the shortest possible time.

In fulfilling his mandate, the High Representative will be supported by the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), to ensure that the mediation efforts and the peace support operation work together seamlessly.

The Chairperson of the Commission calls on the Somali stakeholders to negotiate in good faith, and to put the interests of Somalia and the well-being of the Somali people above all else in the search for an inclusive settlement to the electoral crisis.

This should usher in a democratically elected government with the legitimacy and mandate to resolve the remaining outstanding political and constitutional issues that are posing a threat to the stability of the country and the region as a whole.

The Chairperson of the Commission also encourages all the Somali stakeholders and the international community to extend every support to the High Representative, who will arrive the country in the coming days.

Ambassador Abukar Arman, a former Somalia special envoy to the United States and a foreign policy analyst says there have previously been interventions from neighbors have not brought Somalia the promised peace.

It is clear that no Somali can pursue a political career in his own country without first getting Ethiopia’s blessings. Already, Ethiopia has installed a number of its staunch cohorts in the current government and (along with Kenya) has been handpicking virtually all of the new regional governors, mayors and so forth.

In October 2010, the African Union appointed Jerry John Rawlings as the AU High Representative for Somalia to “mobilize the continent and the rest of the international community to fully assume its responsibilities and contribute more actively to the quest for peace, security and reconciliation in Somalia.”

That however, Ambassador Arman says the former Ghana president and AU Special Representative for Somalia is now assuming his new post with significant diplomatic capital, mainly resulting from the credible work of his fellow countryman, former president, and Special Envoy to Somalia, Jerry John Rawlings.

“On the other hand, he would be carrying the hefty political burden that comes with the so-called African Solutions for African Problems and its cash-gulping record. The concept is taken hostage by African sloganeers and foreign elements eager to advance zero-sum interests,” he wrote me in an emailed message.

Make no mistake, Somalia is held in a nasty headlock by a neighbourhood tag-team unmistakably motivated by zero-sum objective. It is their so-called African solution (not so much of the extremist group al-Shabaab) that is setting the Horn on fire.

According to AFP news report, Mogadishu had been on edge since February, when President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed’s term ended before elections were held, and protesters took to the streets against his rule. But a resolution in April to extend his mandate by two years split the country’s fragile security forces along all-important clan lines.

Soldiers loyal to influential opposition leaders began pouring into the capital. The fighting drove tens of thousands of civilians from their homes and divided the city, with government forces losing some key neighborhoods to opposition units.

Under pressure to ease the tension, Mohamed abandoned his mandate extension and instructed his prime minister to arrange fresh elections and bring together rivals for talks. Indirect elections were supposed to have been held by February under a deal reached between the government and Somalia’s five regional states the previous September.

But that agreement collapsed as the president and the leaders of two states, Puntland and Jubaland, squabbled over the terms. Months of UN-backed talks failed to broker consensus between the feuding sides.

In early May, Mohamed re-launched talks with his opponents over the holding of fresh elections, and agreed to return to the terms of the September accord.

Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble has invited the regional leaders to a round of negotiations on May 20 in the hope of resolving the protracted feud and charting a path to a vote. In the meanwhile, the international community has threatened sanctions if elections are not held soon.

Somalia remains the epicenter of global geopolitical and geo-economic competition. Some of the major ones are in a cut-throat competition that further complicates the Somalia conundrum. With its longest coastline, bordering Ethiopia to the west, Kenya to the southwest and the Gulf of Eden, Somalia has attracted many foreign countries to the region in East Africa.

Al-Shifa Trust establishes research lab to fight COVID-19

ISLAMABAD, MAY 10 (DNA) – Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital has transformed its research center into a state-of-the-art research laboratory to gear up the fight against COVID-19 threatening masses, a senior doctor said Monday.

Final trials of the vaccine developed by a Chinese multinational are in progress after which it will be made available throughout Pakistan while the whole process will take a month, said Dr. Wajid Ali Khan, Chief of Medical Services, Al-Shifa Trust.

He said that the lab will enable us to respond to the current outbreak in a better way through treatments and countermeasures that can save millions of lives.

Dr. Wajid Ali Khan said that we would also be figuring out how the new infection spreads and how it infects as this information will be vital in order to accurately test new vaccines and drugs against the virus.

He added that this is the first time humans have encountered this particular virus which first emerged in December 2019 and rapidly evolved into a pandemic that is endangering humanity.

With the overwhelming numbers of patients the clinical laboratories are encountering enormous pressure therefore a better system is needed to rapidly and accurately diagnose the infected persons for quick response by the health workers, he added.

He said that strategies are urgently needed to educate masses and effectively detect the disease which satisfies patients for appropriate care to can prevent exacerbation of the disease.

He noted that reinfection has also become an issue and we will take this issue as a challenge to overcome this problem through finding ways for long-term immunity in people.

We don’t have the luxury of time, speeding up research has become a necessity to fight this disease which has transformed into a global crisis, he said, adding that we should be working overtime to combat the disease resulting in lockdown disruption hitting millions.

He noted that many people are not taking the problem seriously resulting in a steady increase in the cases which can result in a huge catastrophe.

AL-AQSA MOSQUE DIRECTOR CALLS FOR HELP FROM ISLAMIC WORLD

The director of East Jerusalem‘s Al-Aqsa Mosque appealed via loudspeakers for help from the Islamic world amid Israeli police incursion into the holy site.

Sheikh Omar al-Kiswani said the Al-Aqsa Mosque is coming under Israeli attack.

“Extremist Jews will not enter Haram al-Sharif (the main building of Al-Aqsa) before trampling on our bodies,” he stressed.

Stating that the Israeli police violated the sanctity of Haram al-Sharif, he addressed the Islamic world, “Where is your honor?”

Israeli police on Monday stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem and attacked the Palestinians who were on guard to prevent raids by extremist Jews.

Medical sources told Anadolu Agency that hundreds of people were injured during the Israeli incursion and 50 of them were taken to hospitals.

Extremist Jews decided to storm Al-Aqsa Mosque to celebrate the anniversary of the Six-Day War in 1967, when Israel occupied East Jerusalem, as “Jerusalem Day” according to the Hebrew calendar.

Extremist Jewish organizations had called for raids on Al-Aqsa Mosque on Sunday and Monday to mark the day.

Al-Aqsa Mosque is the world’s third-holiest site for Muslims. Jews call the area the “Temple Mount,” claiming it was the site of two Jewish temples in ancient times.

Israel occupied East Jerusalem, where Al-Aqsa is located, during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. It annexed the entire city in 1980, in a move never recognized by the international community.
