ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Spokesperson strongly condemned the terrorist attack on the police station in Dera Ismail Khan and urged the caretaker governments and state institutions to focus on eradicating terrorists instead of working on the project to eliminate the PTI.

PTI Spokesperson expressed deep grief and sorrow over the martyrdom of 10 police personnel in the terrorist attack and condoled with the bereaved families.

He said that such tragic terrorist incidents few days before the general elections were a cause of great concerns and put a question mark on the performance of the federal and provincial interim governments.

PTI Spokesperson lamented that the entire state machinery was fully engaged in shameful efforts of worst political engineering against former Prime Minister and the most popular leader of the country.

He said that unfortunately, the sole priority of the state institutions, responsible for the safety and security of citizens and maintaining law and order in the country, was to disrupt the peaceful political activities and detain innocent citizens in fake, fabricated and politically motivated cases.

PTI Spokesperson stated that the precarious security situation and the failure to maintain law and order in the country clearly reflected the ambitions and priorities of the caretaker government.

He urged that the caretaker governments and state institutions should shift their focus from the project of eradicating PTI and redefine their priorities and take immediate and tangible steps to deal with the extremist elements.

PTI Spokesperson stated that the unabated terrorist attacks on peaceful political gatherings and police personnel, who were responsible for the safety of citizens, were intolerable.

He emphasized that the governments and state institutions should ensure a peaceful environment for holding free, fair and transparent general elections so as to give the rein of the country to a government with a public mandate, which could formulate an effective and comprehensive strategy to eradicate the menace of terrorism from the country once and for all.

PTI Spokesperson expressed heartfelt sympathy with the bereaved families and prayed to Allah Almighty for high ranks of the martyred police personnel in paradise.

COAS vow support for Kashmiris

RAWALPINDI, 5 FEB /DNA/ – Prime Minister of Pakistan, Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and General Syed Asim Munir, NI (M), Chief of Army Staff (COAS) visited Muzaffarabad. COAS later visited troops deployed on the front lines along Line of Control (LOC) in Sarian Sector.

Upon arrival at Jammu and Kashmir Monument Muzaffarabad, PM of Pakistan, PM of AJ&K and COAS laid floral wreath at Martyrs’ Monument and paid rich tribute to the supreme sacrifices of Shuhada.

The leadership acknowledged that the fortitude, resilience and unwavering faith of Kashmiris in the face of unabated brutality of Indian occupation forces in IIOJK had been exemplary. The brewing humanitarian and security crises in the IIOJK seriously threatens regional peace and stability. Pakistan would always stand with Kashmiris in their just struggle for the inalienable right to self determination in light of UNSC resolutions.

“India is attempting to change the demography of IIOJK through illegal administrative and unilaterally imposed draconian laws and security clampdowns. Such machinations cannot suppress the will and the yearning of the Kashmiri people to attain their legitimate objectives.”

COAS was briefed about the latest situation along the LOC and appreciated the operational readiness, high morale and effective response of troops to Indian CFVs.

Addressing the troops, COAS reiterated that any aggression or violation of territorial sovereignty of Pakistan will be responded with full national resolve and military might.

“Pakistan Army is well versed with the full threat spectrum and is perpetually ready to respond effectively”.

COAS also mentioned the Indian state sponsored terrorism in Pakistan which now extended to heinous targeting of individual Pakistani citizens on our soil. Such callous disregard for international law and norms of international system was becoming a routine occurrence and India was now being called out openly by many countries in the world, exposing her sham credentials, COAS concluded. Pakistan would continue to expose all such attempts and ensure the security of its citizens.

Earlier on arrival, COAS was received by Commander Rawalpindi Corps.

With ‘arrows’ aimed at all, Bilawal wants voters to back PPP on Feb 8

HYDERABAD, FEB 4: With the electioneering reaching its peak just days before the February 8 general elections, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari Sunday fired salvos at all the political parties.

Addressing a public rally in Hyderabad, Bilawal urged people to vote for “arrow” — the PPP’s election symbol— if they wanted to stop the lion, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) electoral symbol.

Stressing the need for hard work, the ex-foreign minister asked the participants: “You just get PPP won [elections]. I will handle this lion.”

Taking a dig at the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) in the city, once considered the stronghold of the party, the PPP chairman advised the people that if you were asked to vote for “kite” then tell them: “[We] will not vote for those who raise anti-Pakistan slogans”.

You should say that you would rip apart the kite, he added. The PPP leader urged the people not to waste their vote by casting for any independent candidate — an apparent reference to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed candidates.

It is pertinent to mention here that the PTI candidates are contesting elections as independent candidates as the Supreme Court last month upheld the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) decision to strip of PTI’s ‘bat’ symbol after finding irregularities in the party’s intra-party elections.

Addressing the public rally, Bilawal also did not spare even Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F), the party which was an ally of the PPP in the previous Pakistan Democratic Movement’s government.

He urged the participants not to vote for “book”, the electoral symbol of JUI-F, asking them not to support those who divide the nation on a religious basis.

“I needed all the seats of Hyderabad,” he tasked his party workers.

Bilawal thanked the people for electing PPP during the recent local body elections in the city and said: “There will be a rain of arrows on February 8.”

The PPP leader urged the masses to bury the politics of hatred and division with the power of vote.

Moving on to the PML-N, Bilawal said another party in the federation was doing the politics of hatred and division.

In a veiled dig at PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif, the PPP leader said that he wanted to return to power for the fourth time by hook or by crook.

Slamming the PML-N leadership, Bilawal said that they did not understand people’s problems, adding that they just wanted to rule the country for the fourth time.

PPP and PML-N, two key allies in the former PDM-led government, have been criticising each other since the end of the coalition regime.

A heated war of words between the two mainstem parties escalated further as the country braces for the upcoming elections.

No zoo in Islamabad violating IHC verdict please

No zoo in Islamabad violating IHC verdict please

DNA

Islamabad: The concerned citizens and experts have urged the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to refrain from violating the Islamabad High Court (IHC) verdict on the Islamabad Zoo. Moving a summary to the Federal Cabinet to reestablish the zoo in Islamabad will be a sheer violation of the IHC verdict, and it should be challenged in the court.

They said CDA will be opposed for its connivance to cage the wild animals or to chain them again. It is the worst form of cruelty in the absence of technical and financial capacity of the CDA to regain the land to establish the zoo.

An online discussion on the subject was organized by the Devcom-Pakistan (Development Communications Network) and DTN on Saturday afternoon.

The well-known biodiversity expert Z B Mirza Said: CDA cannot fool the cabinet to take a favourable decision on its summary in the presence of IHC verdict that had clearly asked “to end the cruelty against the animals, and free the animals in their habitats”. He said the CDA attempt to reestablish the zoo in Islamabad and grabbing the land is “mischievous by the dishonest officials”. They know they cannot do it but only after misguiding the Federal Cabinet. The biodiversity lovers will not support any uncalled-for decision by the CDA Board or the Federal Cabinet.

Another senior biodiversity expert Dr. Ejaz Ahmed said: Though zoos play an important role in education and awareness regarding different species and their behavior, if animals are kept with care. But we have seen that due to poor management and care, the majority of species are depressed and kept in a very unhygienic environment which results in their poor health conditions and strange behavior. We have seen that in the past animals like elephants in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad were not treated well, they were tied with chains resulting in permanent injury and ultimately had to be sent out of Pakistan for treatment.

Rina Saeed Khan, Islamabad Wildlife Management Board chairperson, said:  The reopening of Islamabad zoo should not be brought onto agenda of last cabinet meeting without thoroughly consulting law and climate change ministries. The now-closed Islamabad zoo was handed over to Islamabad Wildlife Management Board in July 2019 by the Federal Cabinet following the Islamabad High Court orders given all the deaths of animals inside the old zoo.

She said, “In 2020 when the Islamabad Zoo was shut down by the landmark judgment of the IHC under the writ petition number 1155/2019 which was not challenged, the IWMB converted the site into the only wildlife rescue center of its kind in Pakistan, helping all species of wild animals in distress. Since its formal inception in 2021, the centre has successfully rescued and rehabilitated approximately 381 animals. IWMB rescues orphaned and injured wildlife in order to implement the IHC order in the judgment of WP 1155/2019 which specifically states that “No animal is treated in a manner that subjects it to unnecessary pain and suffering”.

She said the IWMB Board has also approved detailed plans, in consultation with international experts of Join Hands, an INGO, to open a Visitor Information Centre for the public as part of the Margalla Wildlife Centre. On January 29th 2024, without consulting or informing IWMB, CDA Board decided to “reclaim” the Islamabad zoo and re-open it as a zoo “of international standards” during their meeting. The CDA Board was misinformed that “IWMB had failed to make use of the facility”. The CDA Board has now approved the proposal and asked officials concerned to approach the federal government with their request to take back administrative control of the now closed zoo. This is clearly against the IHC orders.

An environmentalist and Devcom-Pakistan Executive Director Munir Ahmed said: IHC verdict cannot be violated in any case by anyone, the concerned citizens will protest against it if done by the CDA or the Federal Cabinet. In the past, we have seen caged animals living in miserable conditions. CDA had failed to impart any wildlife education previously, and it has no technical, managerial or financial capacity to run the zoo again. So, citizens will not allow CDA to repeat the same misery again. IWMB can do the children’s learning about the wild animals through screening of films and pictorial lectures once the government gives funds to make the new Visitors Centre at the location of the old zoo. It has turned into a wonderful park now where relevant tableaus can also be staged.

An environmental journalist Afia Salam said: Make wildlife learning centres not zoos. Things change, people and their opinions change. What was ok then, may NOT be right now. Like many other things, this goes for the question of having a zoo or not. There is a resurgence of conversation about ‘recreating’ a zoo in Islamabad. This after the previous one had to be closed due to the ignominy it earned for the terrible conditions for animals which garnered international attention through ‘Save Kavaan’ campaign.

She said Zoos are so last century. The way they are in our country, we have not moved out of that century. We have wild animals living in pathetic conditions, mostly malnourished, oftentimes diseased, with not enough trained caregivers. So, no zoos please.
