Beyond Politics: ISC’s seminar explores Kashmir’s resilience in art and culture

Beyond Politics: ISC's seminar explores Kashmir's resilience in art and culture

ISLAMABAD, FEB 2: /DNA/ – In connection with commemoration of Kashmir Solidarity Day, the India Study Centre (ISC) at the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) organized a Seminar and Exhibition on the theme of “Reflections of Resilience: Showcasing Kashmiri Identity Through Art.” The primary purpose of the event was to go beyond the political and diplomatic lenses and to view the Kashmiri resistance from the art, literary and cultural prisms.

The Seminar brought together Kashmir movement’s political figures, academics, artists, and think-tank experts to share their insights on the distinct Kashmiri identity and the Kashmiri struggle for self-determination.

The Chief Guest on the occasion was Ms. Mushaal Hussein Mullick, SAPM on Human Rights & Women Empowerment. The Seminar commenced with remarks by Ambassador Sohail Mahmood, Director General, ISSI. This was followed by a short documentary on Kashmiri resistance towards illegal Indian occupation. The speakers included: Dr. Memoona Khan, HoD Fine Arts Department, FJWU, Rawalpindi; Sardar Waheed Khan, Commissioner, Muzaffarabad, Azad Jammu & Kashmir; and Mr. Altaf Hussain Wani, Chairman, Kashmir Institute of International Relations (KIIR). A young Kashmiri artist, Zohaib Zaman, presented musical rendition of a patriotic Kashmiri song.

Ambassador Sohail Mahmood, in his remarks, expressed gratitude to the speakers, attendees, and the students who took part in the accompanying art competition. He emphasized that art transcends the traditional boundaries of resistance and showcases the political struggle of Kashmiris under Indian illegal occupation and relentless oppression. The art Exhibition, organized today, underscores the power of artistic expression and encapsulates the essence of the Kashmiri struggle, he said.

Ambassador Sohail Mahmood further said that the accompanying Exhibition focuses on the exquisite artistic prowess and the celebration of Kashmiri culture and literature. This also serves as a reminder that Kashmir is not a just regional hotspot, but also a matter of profound concern for the international community. A peaceful resolution of the dispute, upholding the right of self-determination of the Kashmiri people, remains imperative.

Ambassador Sohail Mahmood underlined that art is the voice of the unheard and each stroke of the brush or each word flowing from the pen is a reminder of the conflict-stricken land and the trauma, resilience and collective struggle of the Kashmiri people. In this context, he recalled the poetry of Agha Shahid Ali, the cartoons of Mir Suhail, the artworks of Malik Sajad, and the novels of Basharat Peer and Mirza Waheed. The DG ISSI advised not to assume art as just brushstrokes, but rather as an expression of emotions and lived experience of a people enduring unabated repression but still fighting for their rights. He termed artists as torchbearers of the stories of Kashmir that must touch global consciousness.

Ms. Mushaal Hussein Mullick appreciated ISSI’s initiative to engage the young Pakistani and Kashmiri artists, to explore the heritage and culture of Kashmir. She said today’s innovative event expresses solidarity with the Kashmiri people in a most meaningful way and helps uplift the spirits. She shared her own passion for the arts and highlighted her personal contribution to depicting both the beauty of Kashmir and the travails of its people under occupation. She also compared the struggle of the Kashmiri people with that of the Palestinians.

Ms. Mushaal Mullick highlighted that New Delhi has depended on its cultural diplomacy to project a softer image of India to the world; whereas in reality the RSS-led ‘Hindutva’ brigade in Occupied Jammu and Kashmir continues to attack the Kashmiri leadership, Kashmiri people, and even foreign tourists. She added that India has propagated a negative narrative of Kashmir through films that project the wrong image Kashmiri culture and identity. An occupier, she emphasized, depends on obliterating the original culture and identity of the occupied people and replacing it with its own identity and culture. She said that this is what India is doing by changing the demographic structure in IIOJK and seeking to implant Hindu culture in the occupied territory.

Ms. Mullick said that art is freedom of expression, but only one percent of Kashmiri businesses have the license to export Kashmiri culture and artworks. She proposed collecting and disseminating Kashmiri art through the social media for the whole world to see. She also recommended using artificial intelligence, theatre, music, commercial films, infographics, literature, Kashmiri festivals, and coffee table books for the projection of Kashmiri struggle. She stressed that if there is no space left for peaceful expression, Kashmiris will only have one recourse, i.e. of armed resistance, a right which was recognised by international law.

Dr. Memoona Khan, in her presentation, showcased the powerful artwork of various resistance artists from history. She observed that the valiant yet heart-wrenching struggle of Kashmiris is going on through physical means but other mediums such as art is also being used to portray their resistance. She believed that among the types of books, the book of art is the most powerful. She criticized the so-called ‘democratic’ nation perpetrating atrocities in the occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Art is an important source to arouse the awakening of the world and, therefore, the work of Kashmiri artists needs to be preserved and presented to the world to raise awareness about their struggle, she concluded.

Sardar Waheed Khan apprised the participants of the historical political struggles of the Kashmiri people. He stressed the importance of Kashmiris and Pakistanis working together for the promotion of the Kashmir cause, along with Kashmiri diaspora living around the world. He stated that this idea of exhibition and showcasing the resistance through the art is appreciable. He noted that the resistance is adapting to challenges and life experiences that take a toll on mental and physical health. He also highlighted the development and rehabilitation work being carried out in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) to rehabilitate the Kashmiri people.

Mr. Altaf Hussain Wani opined that art is internationally recognized and has a wider reach and, therefore, must be promoted. He highlighted the work of prominent cartoonist Mir Suhail and his depiction of the struggle of Kashmir through art. He recommended that Pakistan must continue reaffirming solidarity with and standing by the Kashmiri people. Noting that India has demonized Pakistan and Kashmiris using its disinformation campaigns, he proposed protecting the Kashmiri culture and promoting a strong counter-narrative to India’s demonization campaign.

After the remarks, prizes and certificates were distributed among the winners and participants of the art competition. The Seminar’s proceedings were closed with remarks by Chairman BoG ISSI, Ambassador Khalid Mahmood, who stressed a peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with the United Nations (UN) Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people. The Seminar highlighted the importance of creating awareness about the Jammu & Kashmir dispute and the need for international attention to resolve the ongoing conflict.

Later, the participants saw the Exhibition and display of paintings, illustrations, artworks, and handicrafts, which was inaugurated by the chief guest SAPM Mushaal Hussein Mullick, flanked by other speakers and distinguished guests.

North Korea fires more cruise missiles in testing spree

North Korea fires more cruise missiles in testing spree

Seoul, Feb 2 (AFP/APP/DNA): North Korea fired multiple cruise missiles Friday, Seoul’s military said, continuing a fresh streak of weapons testing as Kim Jong Un’s regime ramps up what it calls “war preparations”.

So far this year, Kim has declared South Korea his country’s “principal enemy”, jettisoned agencies dedicated to reunification and outreach, and threatened war over “even 0.001 mm” of territorial infringement.

Pyongyang has also carried out ever more weapons tests, including multiple cruise missile launches, an “underwater nuclear weapon system” test, plus firing a solid-fuelled hypersonic ballistic missile.

On Friday, Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the military had “detected at around 11 am (0200 GMT) the firing of multiple unidentified cruise missiles” into the sea off the country’s west coast.

The South Korean military has “stepped up surveillance in close coordination with the United States”, the JCS said in the statement.

The military is “closely monitoring for signs of additional activity” by the North Korean army, it said, adding they were “closely analysing” the launch.

Unlike their ballistic counterparts, the testing of cruise missiles is not banned under current UN sanctions on Pyongyang.

Cruise missiles tend to be jet-propelled and fly at a lower altitude than more sophisticated ballistic missiles, making them harder to detect and intercept.

Analysts have warned that North Korea could be testing cruise missiles ahead of sending them to Russia for use in Ukraine, with Washington and Seoul claiming Kim has shipped weapons to Moscow, despite rafts of UN sanctions banning any such moves.

“North Korea could be using recent launches as a way to show Russians the capability of their missiles before sending them off to Moscow,” Han Kwon-hee of Korea Association of Defence Industry Studies.

“The need to do it could be especially acute given recent reports of North Korean shells going awry when used by Russian troops,” he said.

Even as Kim ramps up the rhetorical threats against the South, the testing spree plus suspected Russian arms deals indicate “a dog that barks never bites,” he said.

“If he was really serious about a war, he wouldn’t have said it but kept it in the dark for a surprise attack. He also wouldn’t have sold arms to Russia if he were really into going to war with the South.”

The latest launch follows Kim Jong Un inspecting warships at a naval shipyard as he looks to bolster his maritime forces as part of “war preparations”, state media said Friday.

“The strengthening of the naval force presents itself as the most important issue in reliably defending the maritime sovereignty of the country and stepping up the war preparations at present,” Kim said at the Nampho Dockyard, according to the Korean Central News Agency.

A nuclear-powered submarine was on Kim’s strategic weapons wish list set out at a key party congress in 2021, along with a hypersonic warhead, spy satellites and solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missiles.

During his visit to the dockyard, Kim was briefed on various warships under construction as well as preparations for a “new huge plan” assigned by the ruling party.

No details of the plan were provided.

Kim “expressed expectation that the workers of the dockyard would successfully build on the world level the major warships,” KCNA said.

North Korea last year launched what it called its first “tactical nuclear attack submarine”, which Seoul’s military at the time said did not look to be operational.

Analysts said the vessel appeared to be modified from an existing diesel-electric submarine originally designed in the 1950s, and have posed questions about its limitations and vulnerabilities as a platform.

The US stations about 30,000 troops in the South to help it fend off military threats from Pyongyang.

Scam Alert: Beware of Digital Fraud

Scam Alert: Beware of Digital Fraud

By: Sabahat Ali

In the dynamic realm of digital marketing, businesses and consumers face an escalating threat – digital marketing fraud. This deceptive practice spans various fraudulent activities aimed at exploiting vulnerabilities in online advertising and promotional campaigns. With technological advancements, scammers continually adapt their tactics, emphasizing the importance of vigilance and staying informed.

Digital marketing fraud manifests in forms such as click fraud, impression fraud, and affiliate fraud. Click fraud involves artificially inflating ad clicks, leading to businesses paying for non-genuine user engagement. Impression fraud manipulates metrics by falsely boosting ad visibility without authentic user interaction. Affiliate fraud involves fake referrals or manipulated transactions in affiliate marketing programs, draining budgets and compromising performance metrics.

Combating digital marketing fraud is challenging due to its evolving nature. Scammers leverage machine learning and artificial intelligence for more sophisticated fraudulent activities, making detection and prevention increasingly difficult. Businesses must invest in advanced fraud detection tools and stay updated on industry standards to safeguard their online advertising investments.

Consumers are not immune to the impact of digital marketing fraud. Misleading ads, fake promotions, and deceptive practices can lead individuals to fall victim to scams or make uninformed purchasing decisions. To shield themselves, consumers should exercise caution, verify promotions’ legitimacy, and report suspicious activities to relevant authorities.

As the digital marketing landscape expands, education and awareness become crucial tools in the fight against fraud. Businesses should educate teams on the latest fraud prevention techniques, collaborate with reputable advertising platforms, and stay informed about industry best practices. Similarly, consumers need to understand digital marketing tactics, recognize red flags, and report fraudulent activities.

The prevalence of digital marketing fraud necessitates heightened awareness and proactive measures. Vigilance, education, and collaboration are crucial to mitigating risks associated with deceptive online practices, fostering a safer environment for legitimate businesses and consumers.

Common Mobile Phone Scams: Mobile phone scams have evolved into sophisticated schemes, targeting unsuspecting individuals through deceptive tactics. Here are examples of common mobile phone scams:

Lottery or Prize Scams: Scammers claim individuals have won a lottery or prize, requesting a small fee or personal information to claim winnings. In reality, there is no prize, and scammers aim to extract money or sensitive data.

Real Estate and Land Scams: Scammers pose as real estate agents or property owners, offering incredible deals on non-existent houses or land. They may request upfront payments or personal information, leaving victims without a property and out of pocket.

Kidnapping or Mob Threats: Scammers claim to have kidnapped a family member or threaten harm, aiming to create panic and coerce victims into sending money quickly.

Digital Orders and Package Scams: Scammers pretend to be a delivery service or a legitimate company, claiming issues with a digital order or package. They request payment or personal information, ultimately stealing funds or identity details.

Job Offer Scams: Fraudulent job offers promise lucrative opportunities, requesting payment for training materials or background checks. Victims may find themselves out of money with no job in sight.

Blackmail and Extortion: Scammers threaten individuals with releasing compromising information unless payment is made, leveraging fear to coerce victims into transferring money.

It’s crucial to be cautious with unsolicited calls, especially those demanding personal information or immediate payments. Awareness of these common mobile phone scams empowers individuals to recognize red flags and protect themselves from falling victim to these deceptive tactics.

Pakistan’s exports to China continue to grow with sesame the highlight

China

ISLAMABAD, Feb 2 (DNA): Pakistan’s export of goods and services to China witnessed an increase of 39.44% during the first five months of the current fiscal year (2023-24) as compared with the exports of the corresponding period of last year.

While commenting on the cause of this enormous increase, Omer Malik, chairman of King’s Bridge Investments, told China Economic Net (CEN) that there were a number of reasons, but one of them was that there had been a lot of marketing and trade activities between the two countries after the lockdown eased.

“For example, the five-day China International Fair for Trade in Services (CITFIS) has provided a stage for Pakistani companies to showcase their products and services along with Pakistan’s top leaders.

After that, within Pakistan, the 2023 International Textile Exhibition (TEXPO) was followed by the Food and Agri Expo and most recently there was a healthcare and engineering conference held in Lahore, etc.

At those events, we were given the opportunity to showcase our productivity, quality and resources. So I think that this was a combination, in which Pakistan highlighted its potential.”Omer Malik explained.

CEN found from Chinese Customs statistics that the top import item from Pakistan in terms of quantity and value was sesame seeds.

More than 134 million kilogrammes of sesame seeds worth 235.36 million US dollars were exported to China from July to November 2023, an increase of 480 percent compared with exports in the corresponding period last year. Undoubtedly, this will be one of the major highlights since the start of the second phase of CPEC .

Dr. Amjad Magsi, Professor, University of Punjab believes that both Pakistan and China understand each other’s potential and know each other’s strengths.

“Pakistan is the fifth largest producer of sesame seeds, and then when China gave methods and approached it, we achieved very good statistics. Pakistan has a very good capacity in the field of agriculture and in producing seeds”he added.

Omer Malik noticed that Chinese companies have brought technologies and seeds that were genetically engineered to Pakistan.

“They continue to adapt their techniques to our native land, and we have seen the successful production of sesame seeds. They are not only producing it, we are also seeing high yields.”he said. He believes that if Chinese technology is used in the right way, the advantages of sesame seeds will increase, just like other products using Chinese technology.
