Panel discussion on implications of Indian Election Results held at IRS

Panel discussion on implications of Indian Election Results held at IRS

ISLAMABAD, JUN 14 /DNA/ – During a panel discussion at the Institute of Regional Studies, Dr. Arshi Saleem Hashmi, Dean of the Faculty of Contemporary Studies at NDU, questioned the BJP’s newfound assertion that ‘democracy wins in India’ following the disappointing voter turnout in the recent elections. She noted that India, the so-called world’s largest democracy, still falls short of meeting the objective criteria of democracy. Dr. Hashmi emphasized that Indian democracy is facing serious challenges of internal cohesion, primarily stemming from deep-rooted polarization within social and political realms.

Earlier, President IRS, Ambassador Jauhar Saleem said that Modi’s hyper-nationalist achievements, including the revocation of Illegally Occupied Jammu & Kashmir’s autonomy, implementation of a discriminatory citizenship law, and construction of the Ram temple, had proven to be ineffective in terms of Modi’s ambitions for a two thirds majority with his allies reflected by the election slogan “Ab Ki Baar 400 Par” (this time 400 plus). BJP suffered a stunning setback in Uttar Pradesh, India’s largest state considered Hindi heartland where the much-hyped Ram temple was recently built. Amb Saleem suggested that with Modi’s diminished electoral strength, the plans for constitutional amendments to establish India as a Hindu nationalist state would may not be viable.

He noted that Modi’s approach towards Muslims and Pakistan may witness less hate mongering rhetoric since his anti-Pakistan stance during the elections did not significantly help in bolstering Modi’s voter base.

Dr. Muhammad Mujeeb Afzal, Associate Professor at QAU, stated that the election results suggest a return to Vajpayee era in India, where the process of reforms would continue but without the total dominance of a single party, the BJP. Dr. Afzal was of the view that minorities in India may get a respite from a decade of marginalization by the BJP, as the much enhanced vote for the opposition has limited the BJP’s ability to make constitutional amendments to undo secular clauses. Dr. Mujeeb also asserted that the popularity of Rahul and Priyanka would significantly increase in the near future, as they have emerged as symbols of the constitution and protectors of minority and marginalized rights, especially after the two yantras before the elections. On the foreign policy front, he mentioned that there would be no significant clash between the two power centers that emerged in the recent elections, the BJP-NDA and the Congress-INDIA. In that sense, the Kashmir issue would continue to be a challenge between Pakistan and India.

June 15 – the National Salvation Day opening of a golden chapter in Azerbaijan`s history

June 15 - the National Salvation Day opening of a golden chapter in Azerbaijan`s history

In October of 1991, Azerbaijan restored its independence. However, during the initial years of independence, the nation faced significant internal and governmental challenges. Various aspects of public life were affected by disorder and uncertainty. Additionally, the military situation deteriorated with day-by-day escalating Armenian aggression. Azerbaijan experienced a period of power crisis during this time.

On June 9, during challenging times, Heydar Aliyev heeded the urgent calls of the people and returned to Baku. On June 15, 1993, at the request of the Azerbaijani people, Heydar Aliyev, who returned to power for the second time, was elected chairman of the Supreme Soviet. Through his dedicated efforts, he played a crucial role in averting a civil war in the country. Thus, the long-running tensions and confrontation subsided, and the country escaped the threat of civil war and disintegration.

The great potential of Heydar Aliyev became the guarantee of Azerbaijan’s independence in such a difficult political period. The national leader’s personality, political power, determination, and charisma ended the political crisis, and the integration of Azerbaijan into the world community began.

Over the following years, Azerbaijan literally revived: Heydar Aliyev managed to achieve a ceasefire in the zone of the former conflict which arose as a result of Armenian aggression against Azerbaijan. Moreover, thanks to the determination and visionary policies of the national leader, the historic “Contract of the Century” was signed, and the revival of the national economy began. A regular army was created, an influx of major foreign investment into our country began, the foundations of statehood were laid and the ideology of Azerbaijanism was adopted as official ideology. In addition, Azerbaijan has become active in the foreign diplomacy. All this led to the fact that gradually, step by step, our country was formed as an independent, strong and developing state. In 1997, members of the parliament proposed to include June 15 to the calendar as the National Salvation Day of Azerbaijan, and the parliament approved this proposal. Since then, the return to power of Heydar Aliyev, who devoted his life to the prosperity of Azerbaijan, has been celebrated as the National Salvation Day.

It was thanks to the national leader Heydar Aliyev`sexceptional sense of statehood, profound logic, and ability to deeply understand the essence of issues that it became possible to determine the correct approach to the establishment of international relations. Since 2003, Azerbaijan has been continuing to implement the policy of Heydar Aliyev, and enriching it under the leadership of H.E. Mr. Ilham Aliyev, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The modern foreign policy of the Republic of Azerbaijan, conducted under the leadership of Ilham Aliyev, shows its loyalty to the above-mentioned course of the comprehensive development of mutually beneficial relations with members of the world community, and it is aimed at the prosperity and welfare of the Republic of Azerbaijan, at the continuous development and ensuring the well-being of the population.

Under the leadership of Ilham Aliyev, Azerbaijan liberated its internationally recognized territories from the almost 30-years occupation by Armenia, implementing UN Security Council 4 resolutions of 1993.

It should be noted that, over the past years, the Republic of Azerbaijan has successfully chaired several important organizations such as the UN Security Council, the Non-Aligned Movement, the Organization of Turkic States, and many others.

On May 1-3, 2024, the 6th World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue themed “Dialogue for Peace and Global Security: Cooperation and Interconnectivity” was held at the Baku Convention Center. The Forum, organized by the government of Azerbaijan, in partnership with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), the World Tourism Organization (WTO), and the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), brought together 700 distinguished guests representing from all over world.

Taking into consideration all the above-mentioned, Azerbaijan has been unanimously supported as the next host of the UN Climate Change Conference. Thus, in coming November tens of thousands of delegates are expected in Baku for the COP29 Summit to discuss the future of our planet from a climate change perspective. This is another sign of Azerbaijan`s strong diplomacy at a global scale and well recognized reputation of Azerbaijan as a reliable partner for multilateral negotiations.

Unified Global South can become a consolidating force in evolving world order: Int’l Seminar

Unified Global South can become a consolidating force in evolving world order: Int’l Seminar

ISLAMABAD, JUN 14 /DNA/ – In the evolving global landscape, the Global South has an opportunity to consolidate its influence and recognition as a unified force in international development. By embracing shared principles like mutual respect, collaborative governance, and inclusive development, these nations can effectively tackle challenges, navigate complexities, and contribute to a more sustainable global order.

This was observed by speakers during a panel discussion on ‘The New International Order as an Opportunity for the Development of the Global South,’ held at the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS), Islamabad, as a part of the 2nd International Scientific Conference on ‘New World Order: in statu nascendi.’

The conference was co-organized by the Institute of Political Science University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, Poland, and the Department of International Relations, Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST). The two-day conference convened distinguished scholars, policymakers, and experts from across the globe to deliberate on the transformative dynamics shaping the new world order.

The discussion, chaired by Khalid Rahman, chairman IPS, was addressed by Dr Safdar Sohail, executive director, Social Protection Resource Centre, Dr Syed Tahir Hijazi, economist and former member Planning Commission, Brigadier (r) Said Nazir, security and defense analyst, and Dr Du Fang, associate professor, Sichuan University, China, while Dr Azhar Ahmad, IPS associate, moderated the discussion.

Dr Safdar said achieving social stability is necessary for positive global participation in the developing world order. He identified four stages of social development – family, society, social mobility, and interstate social development and noted that Pakistan, in between the first and second stages, must resolve its social instability and governance issues.

The need for this stability is exacerbated by the persistence of military alliances, war threats, and the influence of military-industrial complexes on global security frameworks, noted Brig Said. He urged UN reforms and a global union to address conflicts, emphasizing debt relief, climate change financing, and positive competition from the Global South. He concluded that the UN must ensure world peace or rely on the proliferation of nuclear deterrence to safeguard the peace, urging global cooperation and effective governance.

Adding to this, Dr Tahir highlighted the alarming trend in the emerging world order where MNCs are exerting influence greater than states themselves. He critiqued institutions like the IMF and World Bank for indebting nations worldwide, which has facilitated the power dynamics favoring MNCs. He emphasized that this century’s order would be defined by corporate interests and power and thus Global South must be proactive.

In this regard, China’s commitment to fostering a balanced global order underpins its imperative of inclusive development, said Dr Du Fang. This is prominent within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), which China envisions as a multilateral mechanism for peace without advocating military hegemony.

In his concluding remarks, Khalid Rahman noted that the current phase of Global South evolution is based on amelioration and active agency. China’s role in this context, particularly its paradigm of development centered on a ‘shared destiny,’ is an opportunity for the Global South to rise collectively. However, he acknowledged several challenges: the diversity within the Global South, the probability of a shift towards self-interest among leading Global South countries, security concerns, and the Western domination of IT technology. For that, he stressed the importance of focusing on overarching paradigms rather than minor issues to address these challenges effectively.

In part of his message, he mentioned that since the Islamic Emirate came to power, the security and rights of all Afghan citizens have been ensured, Islamic Sharia is being implemented, and the country’s territories are secure.

Although Sheikh Hibatullah Akhundzada did not mention the reopening of schools and universities for girls, he added that necessary actions have been taken to expand religious schools.

AJK High Court grants bail to poet Ahmed Farhad

AJK

MUZAFFARABAD, JUN 14: The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) High Court Friday granted bail to poet Ahmed Farhad weeks after his arrest.

The poet’s bail petition was approved against a surety bond worth Rs200,000.

Earlier this week, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) had declared Farhad as a “missing person” until he returned back to his home and termed his arrest “illegal”.

The court’s order read that the poet was missing since May 15 and couldn’t reach home, while a first information report (FIR) regarding his disappearance was registered with the Lohebher Police Station in Islamabad under Section 427 and 365 PPC.

As per the order, the court was told that Farhad Ali was arrested by Police Station Dherkot Kashmir and was also wanted by the Saddar Police Station Muzaffarabad in another case of terrorism.

It added that in above circumstances the person couldn’t be produced before the bench. Therefore, the court reached a conclusion that he was forcibly disappeared and the institution concerned failed to recover him.

The court, in its order, mentioned that Farhad was currently in judicial custody, as per the investigation officer, and declared his arrest “illegal”.

The court stated that the investigation officer of Lohebher Police Station was bound to record the poet’s statement under Section-164 before a judicial magistrate after his return and proceed the investigation in light of his statement.

Farhad, a defiant poet from Kashmir, remained missing for 15 days last month after which Attorney General for Pakistan Mansoor Usman Awan revealed that he was, in fact, arrested and in AJK police’s custody. The AGP’s statement came on May 29, in response to IHC’s directions to ensure Farhad’s recovery.

The poet was arrested and transferred to Muzaffarabad from DhirKot under multiple sections of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA).

His matter came into the spotlight after he allegedly went missing during protests in AJK in May following which his wife, Urooj Zainab, moved the IHC seeking her husband’s recovery, requesting the court to identify, investigate, and prosecute those responsible for his disappearance.
