What’s grey wolf sign that led to misguided 2-game ban on Merih Demiral?

What's grey wolf sign that led to misguided 2-game ban on Merih Demiral?

Berlin, JUL 6: The unnecessary controversy over famous Turkish footballer Melih Demiral’s celebration at Euro 2024 is rooted in ignorance about Turkic culture, as the symbol is one of immense historical significance and has “nothing to do with racism,” according to a Turkish historian.

Turkish footballer Demiral’s celebration at the European Championships, in which he formed the shape of a wolf’s head with his fingers, known as the grey wolf sign in Turkic culture, has been the target of German officials’ complaints. The celebration quickly ignited controversy and debate over the gesture, yet much of it ill-informed.

Urged by German officials, European football’s governing body launched an unwarranted investigation over the sign given by Demiral during Tuesday’s EURO 2024 clash between Austria and Türkiye.

Ahmet Tasagil, a professor at the Turkish Language and Literature Department at Istanbul’s Yeditepe University, emphasised the historical significance of the symbol for Turkish people.

“The wolf symbol is one of the most important symbols of the Turks,” Tasagil told Anadolu Agency.

“All Turkic tribes living in Central Asia used this symbol during the fourth and fifth centuries. It was first used by a Turkic tribe called the Wusuns in 174 BC. By the fourth and fifth centuries AD, the wolf motif was adopted by the Turkic tribes known as the Kao-Ch’e.”

The symbol gained legendary status during the establishment of the Turk Kaganate in AD 552, he said.

“It was like the official document of the state. During the Gokturk period, princesses even used the grey wolf as a title. Therefore, it has nothing to do with racism; it is a historical symbol.”

Guiding figure representing wisdom

He elaborated on the context in which the wolf symbol was used throughout Turkish history.

“In the Ergenekon epic (from around 330 BC), the wolf is seen as a guide and leader. There’s also a belief from the Gokturk period that the Turks originated from a wolf.”

Tasagil highlighted that sources from the 12th and 13th centuries mention that the Turks, upon arriving in Anatolia, followed a wolf, according to Armenian, Syriac, and other Middle Eastern legends.

“For the Turks, the wolf is a guiding figure, representing wisdom, strategy, and rescue in difficult times.”

“When the Republic of Türkiye was established (in 1923), the wolf appeared on national currency, in newspapers, on the emblems of national institutions,” he noted.

“Turkish state tradition has been very well represented by the Republic of Türkiye from past to present, and we never lost our independence, namely during the Seljukids, the Anatolian Seljuks” – pre-Ottoman Turkic civilisations – “Ottoman Empire, and the Republic of Türkiye eras. So, it’s normal for this symbol to still live on in the Republic of Türkiye.

“However, other Turkic republics (in Central Asia) now don’t use this because they lived under the domination of Russians or other nations for a long time because of this.”

Europe’s rising far-right fuels discrimination

Tasagil said the controversy also reflects the dangerous rise of the far right in Europe and its consequent political impact on various groups, fueling greater discrimination.

“I think the symbol is perceived politically today due to the rise of the far-right in Europe or policies against the Turks.”

“Otherwise, every nation uses its own symbols. European footballers comfortably use crosses or their national symbols on their jerseys. The French national symbol, the rooster, is prominently displayed on their jerseys, flags, and banners. There’s no harm in Turks using their symbols either,” he added.

Türkiye condemns UEFA investigation

UEFA announced an investigation into the gesture made by Turkish defender Demiral during Türkiye’s EURO 2024 match against Austria.

After scoring his second goal in Türkiye’s 2-1 victory over Austria, Demiral celebrated by making a hand sign resembling a wolf’s head.

The grey wolves sign is a profound historical and cultural emblem of the Turkish people, embodying Turkish identity rather than aligning with any particular political or social faction.

The symbol has been occasionally used by leaders from various political backgrounds as a representation of Turkish identity.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry condemned UEFA’s decision to investigate Demiral, calling it “unacceptable.”

The ministry pointed out that even a report last September by the German spy agency BfV said the grey wolves sign should not necessarily be linked to right-wing extremism and that it is not a banned symbol in Germany.

After German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said on X, “The symbols of Turkish right-wing extremists have no place in our stadiums,” Türkiye summoned German Ambassador Jurgen Schulz to Ankara.

‘Tainted politicians will not be part of Awaam Pakistan’: Khaqan Abbasi, Miftah Ismail launch new party

'Tainted politicians will not be part of Awaam Pakistan': Khaqan Abbasi, Miftah Ismail launch new party

ISLAMABAD, JUL 6: Former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi Saturday said that “tainted” politicians will not be part of the newly launched political party “Awaam Pakistan”.

“Politicians with tainted reputations will not be a part of Awaam Pakistan,” Khaqan said while speaking at a press conference in Islamabad flanked by his former Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders Miftah Ismail and Mehtab Abbasi.

The party’s launching comes as Khaqan, along with Miftah, ex-Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) member Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar had parted ways from their former parties after developing differences with their leadership in recent months

With the trio hinting at establishing a new political platform for months, Abbasi, in April of this year, approached the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for the registration of a new political party.

The party’s today’s launch was announced last month by Miftah, who while speaking to Geo News, said that their party aimed to change the entire governance system of the country with the masses as core sources of decision-making.

‘Predatory system cannot continue’
Speaking at the occasion, Miftah said that the existing “predatory” system cannot continue in the country.

“Are you running East India Company,” Miftah said, adding: “This system of the hunter and the hunted cannot continue.”

Lambasting the federal government for its budget for the fiscal year 2024-25, the ex-finance czar said that those earning merely Rs50,000 per month are asked to pay tax, but no tax is demanded from the one owning thousands of acres of land.
“The tax on the salaried class has been doubled in the budget […] the middle class is being crushed,” Miftah said, stressing that the budget in essence is a reflection of the ruling elite’s priorities.

The ex-minister’s comments refer to the tax-heavy Finance Bill 2024, which was assented by President Asif Ali Zardari last week, wherein the government has set out a challenging tax revenue target of Rs13 trillion for the year starting July 1, up about 40% from the current year to strengthen the case for a new rescue deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The rise in the tax target is made up of a 48% increase in direct taxes and a 35% hike in indirect taxes over revised estimates of the current year. Non-tax revenue, including petroleum levies, is seen increasing by a whopping 64%.

Addressing the recently announced anti-terrorism drive “Operation Azm-e-Istehkam,” the politician said: “Today we are going to conduct another operation […] why these operations are needed again and again because you cannot end poverty.”

His remarks come as the federal cabinet last week approved the launch of the counter-terrorism operation following the National Action Plan’s Central Apex Committee’s recommendations to root out militance from the country.

With opposition parties voicing concerns over the anti-terror operation, the government has decided to convene an all-parties conference (APC) “to gain political parties’ confidence” over its decision.

Islamic Emirate dismisses SCO’s call for inclusive govt as internal matter

Islamic Emirate dismisses SCO's call for inclusive govt as internal matter

KABUL, JUL 5: The Islamic Emirate called the Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s request regarding the establishment of an inclusive government in Afghanistan an internal matter of the country.

Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate, in statements to TOLOnews, called on this organization to discuss how to regulate relations with Afghanistan.

Mujahid told TOLOnews: “The issue of an inclusive government is an internal matter; Afghans will make decisions with consideration of their national interests in any case. Neighboring countries, as well as distant and nearby countries, should discuss issues related to their relations with Afghanistan.”

Yesterday, Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized at the summit of the member countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization that they are working to encourage the caretaker government to establish a broad and inclusive political structure.

The Chinese President said in this regard: “Afghanistan is a necessity for regional security. We must work through coordination and cooperation with Afghanistan’s neighbors and other frameworks to increase humanitarian support for Afghanistan and encourage Afghanistan to establish a broad and inclusive political structure and pursue the path of peace and reconstruction.”

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin, at the end of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit, described the Islamic Emirate as Russia’s ally in the fight against terrorism.

Putin said that the “Taliban” are in power in Afghanistan and are therefore allies of Moscow in the fight against terrorism.

The Russian President said: “The Taliban are undoubtedly our allies in the fight against terrorism. Because any current government is interested in the stability of its power and the stability of the country it leads. I am sure that the Taliban are also interested in everything being peaceful in Afghanistan.”

The next summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization member countries is scheduled to be hosted by Pakistan on October 15 and 16, 2024.

PTI: From Hardships to Hope

Qamar Bashir

By: Qamar Bashir

Faisal Vadha had warned six months prior that PTI’s iconic election symbol would be taken away. However, PTI, preoccupied with the aftermath of the May 9th incidents and the subsequent arrests of their leaders and workers, did not heed this warning or take preventive measures. Consequently, they lost their election symbol.

In another interview, after a dramatic gesture of prostrating on the footpath near the Supreme Court, Vadha warned PTI of even harder times ahead. But when confronted a PTI leader about Vadha’s another horrific prediction, he replied that they are already in deep trouble their mandate was stolen, they deprived of governance in Federation and provinces, their leader is incarcerated, their party is in shatters, what else could be additional hardships which could befallen on PTI?.  Same was the question in others’ minds. But the answer came in the shape of the Punjab Government’s decision to file a case of high treason against the PTI leadership.

In an article titled “What was Wrong with Imran’s Video on X,” I pointed out that the  video could not have solicited the angry reaction from the Pakistan Army, if it had merely attributed the reasons for the surrender of the Pakistan Army to the Indian Army to poor leadership, cowardice, lack of sound planning, logistic failures, and compromising the supply chain, without accusing the army of committing high treason as alleged in the video. This lack of diligence on PTI’s part may cost them heavily. The Punjab Government has used this video and the incidents of May 9 as a basis to lodge a case of high treason against the PTI leadership and pursue it relentlessly, creating another reason to keep Imran Khan in jail, if he somehow succeeds in securing his release in over 200 other cases.

The second indication of PTI’s increasing troubles came on July 4th, when the scheduled meetings between the PTI leadership and Imran Khan were canceled without any explanation. Additionally, Imran Khan’s freedom to communicate with his party leaders was restricted. When the jail administration was asked about the reason for these actions, they cited orders from the “high command.” When pressed further on who constituted the “high command,” they ambiguously replied that PTI knew them very well.

The fourth issue PTI is facing is the delay in the constitution of the Election Tribunals, even after five months have passed since the elections. This delay, successfully employed by the government, highlights PTI leadership’s failure to use their legal expertise to ensure the timely notification of these tribunals. Instead, the ordinance regarding the tribunal’s composition was challenged in the Lahore High Court and subsequently in the Supreme Court. In compliance with Supreme Court orders, further proceedings have been postponed until August 2024.  This delay aligns with the government’s objectives to buy time and allow the opposition to settle with the current election outcomes, rather than pressing for redressal of their election grievances.

To add insult to injury, the party is facing steep criticism from former PTI stalwarts like Ch. Fawad Hussain, Mr. Zaidi, and other leaders for lacking a concrete and coherent political strategy to secure the release of the party founder. According to these critics, in the absence of a political strategy, which is the current situation, there is no chance of Mr. Imran Khan’s release in the near or distant future.

Interestingly, PTI’s leadership failures at home were compensated by its gains abroad.

The overseas party supporters demonstrated exactly what is lacking in PTI’s current leadership in Pakistan. They set an initially elusive target, built strong teams across the United States and successfully convinced Congressman Rich McCormick of Georgia and Congressman Dan Kildee of Michigan, along with over 100 co-sponsors from both parties, to introduce a resolution demanding an independent investigation into allegations of election irregularities and the release of Imran Khan. The resolution passed with unprecedented success, receiving 368 votes in favor and only 7 against.

This remarkable achievement was widely acknowledged by the media, analysts, and commentators worldwide. Even PML(N) veteran leader Mr. Irfan Siddique termed it a significant accomplishment for PTI, unparalleled in Pakistan’s history.

The U.S. chapter of PTI did not stop there, but inundated the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention with complaints, dossiers, and evidence. Their relentless efforts culminated in a significant achievement: convincing the UN Working Group to declare that the detention of former Prime Minister Imran Khan was “arbitrary” and violated several international laws and norms. The working group concluded that Khan’s prosecution lacked legal basis and appeared politically motivated to disqualify him from running for office besides expressing the concerns about the broader campaign of political repression against Khan and his party.

Another pivotal element in the puzzle surrounding PTI’s challenges and potential emancipation is the ongoing case sub-judice before the Supreme Court of Pakistan, SIC versus Election Commission. From observing the proceedings, it is abundantly clear that neither the Chief Justice nor the brute power of the state will influence or scuttle the judgment of any member of the larger bench. We can expect a decision that may surprise both the executive and the government alike. This decision is likely to have a significant impact on the composition of the National and Provincial Assemblies, and consequently, on the composition of the government in the Federation and the province of Punjab.

It goes without saying that both the government and the supra-executive are also monitoring the historic proceedings of the Supreme Court and have likely already begun developing contingency plans to salvage their majority in the National Assemblies and their governments.

It is up to PTI to set aside their internal petty and egoistic differences and develop their own contingency plans to reap the maximum benefits from the energy generated in their favor by the U.S. Congress, the United Nations Working Group, and the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

PTI seeks CJP’s recusal from benches hearing Khan, PTI’s cases

Imran Khan

DNA

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leadership expressed distrust in the Chief Justice of Pakistan and demanded his recusal from the benches hearing related to PTI and its Founding Chairman Imran Khan and vowed that they would continue their fight for the restoration of constitutional supremacy and rule of law despite all odds.

Addressing a press conference along with PTI senior leadership including Shamim Naqvi, Shandana Gulzar, Shoaib Shaheen and Shaukat Basra, PTI Central Information Secretary Raoof Hasan said that the CJP should recues himself from all PTI related cases because justice could not be done in his presence in the benches.

He said that PTI Chairman-for-life also categorically expressed his distrust in the CJP but ironically he sat in all benches despite his clear bias against Khan and PTI, which was quite visible from his conduct.

“Now we are sure that we will not get justice, as Justice Gulzar’s led five-member bench also said that Qazi Faiz Isa could not hear our cases, our lawyers believe that we will not get justice, so our cases should be heard by someone else,” he added

Raoof strongly condemned the abduction of Rizwan Ahmed, a senior member of PTI’s media department while coming from his home to office, adding it was another living example of state repression, terrorism and fascism.

“After the murderous attack on me, this cruelty and brutality shows that the state wants to paralyze the media department of the party so that Imran Khan and PTI’s narrative cannot reach the people,” he maintained.

However, he made it clear that each and every one of them would resist this fascism like soldiers and would reach his narrative to the people as long as they were alive despite all adversarial circumstances.

PTI CSI revealed that they came to know that Rizwan was abducted by FIA and they would move the court to ensure his earliest release.

Raoof stated that they were fighting against the state fascism as they had never seen such a tyranny during the past 75 years. He made it clear that PTI would hold Tarnor jalsa, as they got the NOC after great and long struggle.

Speaking on the occasion, Shoaib Shaheen vowed said that they would continue their struggle for the supremacy of the constitution and rule of law despite all odds, as the puppet government was hell-bent to deprive them of their legal and constitutional rights.

He noted that they wanted the decisions should be made based on law and constitutions hence they wanted CJP should not sit in benches hearing Khan’s cases, as they had already raised legal and constitutional objections on his presence in all such benches; hence he should not sit in benches hearing Khan cases in future because he expressed his no-confidence in Qazi.

Shoaib made it clear that PTI would hold a historic jalsa as wrong and misleading news were being spread in this regard, adding that people across the country would take part in the public gathering despite all sort of impediments being created by the mandate thieves even after the clear court’s orders.

Muhammad Ishtiaq Chaudhry Advocate said: “Let me clarify one thing after meeting Imran Khan, we have no trust in Qazi Faiz Isa.”

Speaking on the occasion, Shandana Gulzar said that if Khan and his wife was not save in this country what to talk of an ordinary citizen as what they did with Azam Swati family.

Shoukat Basra demanded immediate release of Rizwan Malik, his brother and Azhar Mashwani’s brothers and vowed that such shameful and brutal tactics could not dampen their courage.

He announced that all 180 PTI MNAs and MPs from across the country would appear before the court and would express their in writing distrust and no-confidence on Qaz.

Speaking on the occasion, Naqvi refuted reports of groupings within the party and said that all PTI members were united as a unified team under leadership of Imran Khan and they would continue their struggle until make the dream of haqeeqi Azadi a reality.
