PM to terminate IPPs a commendable

Nazir Siyal

KARACHI: The government and its institutions are looting the wealth and the public in all means with no accountability for the billions being embezzled protesters said.

The hundreds of protesters blocked National Highway and main arteries of metropolitan city a day before said that the public has been thrown to the wolves, left at the mercy of exploitation as these entities are free to tear them apart as they wish.

They highlighted that the Prime Minister of Pakistan’s decision to terminate agreements with a few Independent Power Producers (IPPs) is a commendable step. However, it is also necessary to take action on nearly a hundred others, given their significant number.

In Pakistan, whether it’s power distribution companies or the traffic police, Municipal services and others. There is a massive exploitation involving millions and billions of rupees loot and plunder on the surface they claimed.

According to Hussain an analyst, all institutions in Pakistan impose heavy taxes on the public, but instead of providing services, they charge fees for various matters. Sadly, all institutions, particularly power distribution companies, traffic police, municipal and other departments, are looting the public on a large scale.

According to an them, there is severe load shedding, even in areas where 100% billing is paid, people suffer 16 to 18 hours of power outages, but the highest level of taxes and billing.

Residential areas lack basic facilities, with electricity being unavailable for 18 hours in many residential neighborhoods.

It is mentioned here that in Bin Qasim area of Karachi, there is a network of thousands of large industries and factories. Billions of rupees could be spent under corporate social responsibility (CSR) for services, but the condition of sewage, roads, education, health, and sanitation is dire, and the situation is worsening.

Three years ago, one of the Gulshan Moazzam residential society had a scheme worth 13.2 million rupees for four PMTs and modern underground cabling with poles, with 100% billing, but they are still facing 18 hours of load shedding. When the residents requested connect with Express feeder line, a cost of 25 million rupees was imposed. Similarly, municipal taxes and other charges are being taken through electricity bills, but no services are being provided.

Likewise, in Traffic department a new Lollipop of 6,000 rupees are being charged for international driving licenses, with the claim that Pakistani international driving permits will be accepted worldwide. However, the internationally accepted IDP, which costs only 2,500 rupees, can be printed at home online and is recognized worldwide. So, why is there a need for an international driving permit from Pakistan?

The government and institutions are looting the public in all means with no accountability for the billions being embezzled they claimed.

Idea of Indonesianists

Idea of Indonesianists

Dr M Ali Hamza

Indonesia, with its vibrant culture, vast natural resources, and strategic geopolitical position, has been a focal point for scholars, diplomats, and development experts across the globe. Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Indonesia, recently held the 6th Annual World Indonesianist Congress in Jakarta. Over time, a unique phenomenon known as the Indonesianists has emerged; non-Indonesians around the globe who have spent a considerable amount of their time to understand Indonesia, advocates for its prosperity, and contribute to its development. In a simple phrase, the Friends of Indonesia. These individuals, ranging from academics to diplomats and business professionals, offer invaluable external perspectives and insights into Indonesia’s development. The concept of Indonesianists emphasizes how nations can benefit from their global friends and partners, particularly through intellectual collaboration, advisory roles, and policy recommendations. This idea holds significance not only for Indonesia but also for countries like Pakistan, where similar external guidance can be leveraged for the progress.

The Indonesianists are non-Indonesians, but their long-term involvement with the nation enables them to act as external advisers, supporters, and facilitators of development. Some have lived in Indonesia and others may have worked with Indonesian organizations, conducted research on Indonesian social or economic issues, or engaged in bilateral or multilateral collaborations between Indonesia and other nations. Indonesianists contribute in several significant ways; lets discuss few.

Firstly, Knowledge Transfer and Expertise. Non-Indonesian experts bring with them insights from their respective countries, industries, or fields of study. By sharing their knowledge and experiences, they help Indonesia adapt best practices, especially in fields like governance, education, environmental management, tourism and economic policy. For example, scholars of Indonesian history can guide the nation on lessons from its past that may be critical for its future trajectory.

Secondly, Building Bridges Between Indonesia and the World.Indonesianists, through their network of global connections, help Indonesia engage with international organizations, investors, and other countries. This facilitates not only economic growth but also a deeper cultural exchange that enables Indonesia to maintain a strong international presence.

Thirdly, Promoting Innovation and Sustainable Development. Many Indonesianists advocate for environmentally sustainable policies and development initiatives. They help introduce global models of innovation that can be tailored to Indonesia’s unique cultural and geographical needs.

Last but not the least, Strengthening Educational and Institutional Capacity. Academic Indonesianists often focus on strengthening the intellectual foundation of the nation. They partner with Indonesian universities, contribute to curriculum development, and provide opportunities for Indonesian scholars to gain international exposure.

While Indonesia itself is rich in intellectual capital, the idea of Indonesianists highlights the importance of welcoming external perspectives that can enhance local efforts and inspire innovation. With a country as diverse and complex as Indonesia, having external advocates provides a broader view, allowing for more educated decision-making in politics, economics, and social reforms.

Pakistan, like Indonesia, is a country with tremendous potential but faces complex challenges. The idea of utilizing external guidance from friends of the country, what we could call Pakistaniists, could be highly beneficial for its development. In Pakistan’s context, this concept could focus on utilizing non-Pakistanis who have significant expertise in relevant fields and a deep connection with the country to guide its development.

Pakistan faces challenges in governance, education, economic reform, and environmental sustainability. Pakistaniists could offer much-needed expertise in sectors like energy, agriculture, education, and health. For instance, Pakistaniists with experience in public administration from developed countries could provide insights into reforming public sector institutions, making them more efficient and transparent.

Pakistaniists could include members of the global Pakistani diaspora who, although born or settled abroad, but retain deep connections with the country. These individuals could bridge Pakistan with the world, facilitating international collaborations, foreign direct investments, and global trade. Just as Indonesianists have helped Indonesia engage with the international community, Pakistaniists could amplify Pakistan’s voice on the global stage.

Similar to the Indonesianist model, Pakistaniists could introduce and localize global best practices in various sectors. Whether it’s learning from countries that have successfully curbed corruption, managed population growth, or improved health outcomes, external advisers could provide Pakistan with tested solutions, thereby accelerating its development.

Moreover, Pakistan, like Indonesia, is vulnerable to climate change. Pakistaniists who specialize in environmental science and sustainability could guide the nation in implementing sustainable development models, introducing clean energy solutions, and preserving its natural resources.

Pakistan’s education system faces numerous challenges, from low literacy rates to gender inequality in schooling. Pakistaniists, especially those in the academic field, could help in curriculum development, teacher training, and capacity building in educational institutions, fostering a generation of Pakistanis better equipped to lead the country into a prosperous future.

The Indonesianists model highlights that no nation is an island and that global partnerships can provide crucial insights and guidance for sustained growth and prosperity. For countries like Pakistan, adopting a similar approach could open doors to innovative solutions and strengthen their ties with the international community.

Both Indonesia and Pakistan, with their dynamic populations and strategic importance in Asia, stand to gain immensely by engaging with their global friends and experts. As nations seek to navigate the complexities of modern development, the idea of Indonesianists, replicated in various forms across the world, could be a game-changing approach to fostering progress and prosperity.

Unveiling Al-Muhallab: New book reassesses Pakistan’s Islamic roots before Muhammad Bin Qasim

Unveiling Al-Muhallab: New book reassesses Pakistan’s Islamic roots before Muhammad Bin Qasim

ISLAMABAD, OCT 11 /DNA/ – Pakistan’s Islamic roots can be traced back to the arrival of Al-Muhallab in 664 AD, nearly five decades before Muhammad bin Qasim landed in 711 AD. Al-Muhallab not only expanded the Islamic frontier but also played a pivotal role in shaping the cultural and religious landscape of present-day Pakistan.

This was noted by Dr Syed Mohammad Anwer, aalim judge, Federal Shariat Court, at the launch of his latest book, Al Muhallab – Khita e Pakistan Main Islam Ka Pehla Alambardar (The first standard-bearer of Islam in the region of Pakistan) held at the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS), Islamabad.

The book offers an insightful exploration of the life and contributions of Al-Muhallab ibn Abi Sufra, a remarkable Muslim general whose legacy in the early Islamic conquests has remained underrepresented in historical discourse.

The ceremony was graced by prominent scholars and intellectuals, including Dr Ijaz Shafi Gilani, founder of Gallup Pakistan, Prof Jalil Aali, prominent writer, intellectual, and poet, Khalid Rahman, chairman IPS, Ambassador (r) Syed Abrar Hussain, vice chairman IPS, Syed Abu Ahmed Akif, former federal secretary, and Dr Shahzad Iqbal Sham, senior research fellow at IPS.

Addressing the audience, Dr Anwer highlighted Al-Muhallab’s exceptional leadership, his military acumen, and his significant victories, demonstrating his use of non-kinetic warfare strategies, including diplomacy and conflict resolution, which hold significant relevance in modern discussions of warfare and fifth-generation warfare tactics. He further explained how Al-Muhallab’s entry into the region can be seen as the starting point of Pakistan’s Islamic history.

He further emphasized that Al-Muhallab’s victories were not just military triumphs but also marked the introduction of a new ideological and cultural wave in the region. He pointed out that the civilizational encounter between Islam and South Asian region did not happen in isolation; rather, it was part of a parallel process of “Islamization of India and Indianization of Islam,” which continued through the centuries.

Underscoring the importance of studying Islam’s interaction with the region’s indigenous civilization, Prof Jalil Aali noted that when a religion enters a new region, it goes through a civilizational process, shaping the norms and also being shaped by the local culture.

“The history of any region is its first identity,” said Dr Ijaz Gilani while reflecting on how history is not a static field but an evolving narrative that requires constant revisiting and reinterpretation. He said a long-term understanding of Islamic history in Pakistan should not be reduced to a few events and figures as Pakistan has a rich Islamic heritage. He urged readers to recognize the many layers of influence that shaped the region long before the era of Muhammad bin Qasim.

Offering a comprehensive review of the book, Dr Shahzad Sham noted that the work opens the door to a deeper understanding of the pre-Qasim period of Islamic history in Pakistan, suggesting that the story of Islam in the subcontinent is far more complex and diverse than traditionally thought.

He further said that the book and the discussion around it reflect a larger movement toward reassessing the historical narrative of the subcontinent, encouraging scholars and the public alike to explore figures and events that have been marginalized in history.

In his remarks, Khalid Rahman stressed the need for critical engagement with historical texts and insights. He said the challenge lies in moving forward with such works, integrating new historical insights into national discourse while ensuring that historical understanding is based on verified and reliable sources.

England 1-0 after thrashing Pakistan by innings, 47 runs in first Test showdown

England 1-0 after thrashing Pakistan by innings, 47 runs in first Test showdown

England completed an extraordinary innings and 47-run victory over Pakistan on the fifth day of their record-breaking opening test after staving off a fightback from the depleted home side on Friday.

With Abrar Ahmed not batting due to illness, the tourists reduced Pakistan to 220-9 after some early resistance to spark huge celebrations among a small but vocal group of travelling English fans.

Pakistan resumed on a precarious 152-6 and Salman Agha was the first to depart in the morning after a defiant 63, with the introduction of Jack Leach helping England snap his 109-run partnership with Aamer Jamal.

England’s pace bowlers peppered the two overnight batsmen with bouncers earlier and Jamal recovered after being hit on the side of the head by a fiery ball from Brydon Carse to bring up his own half-century.

He was then granted a lifeline when stand-in captain Ollie Pope put down a difficult chance at square-leg – England’s fifth dropped catch of the innings – and remained not out on 55.

Leach pulled off a stunning catch off his own bowling to remove Shaheen Afridi before having Naseem Shah stumped to seal the victory.

England had declared after making their highest total in 86 years, a colossal 823-7 in 150 overs after Harry Brook’s 317 and Joe Root’s 262, and extracted the most out of a lifeless pitch at the Multan Cricket Stadium to rattle Pakistan on Thursday.

The hosts had flexed their muscles in the early part of the test with 556 in the first innings but found themselves under the gun trailing England by 115 runs at the end of the fourth day and they folded under pressure.

Playing XI
Pakistan: Shan Masood (captain), Saud Shakeel (vice-captain), Saim Ayub, Abdullah Shafique, Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan (wicket-keeper), Salman Ali Agha, Aamir Jamal, Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, Abrar Ahmad

England: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope (captain), Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jamie Smith, Chris Woakes, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Jack Leach, Shoaib Bashir

French ambassador fetes Pakistani athletes Arshad Nadeem and Haider Ali

ambassador

Ambassador Galey said, Arshad and Haider, definitely won their medals, and magnificently. But all of you, Pakistani athletes, you took part, you competed, you went to the end of your strength to do the best you could. For that, you all deserve our respect and our admiration, and that of your country

DNA

ISLAMABAD: Ambassador of France to Pakistan Nicolas Galey congratulated gold medallist Arshad Nadeem and Bronze medalist Haider Ali, Olympic and Paralympic athletes, adding two months ago, on July 8, he was happy and honored, with the entire French embassy team and all our guests, to receive many of you at the embassy, as the Pakistani teams were preparing to fly to Paris for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The ambassador expressed these views during a reception he hosted for Arshad and Haider Ali, at his residence.

He further said, Pakistan’s Olympic and Paralympic delegations in Paris were not the largest ones – especially the Paralympic delegation! But what a success with few participants! A gold medal in the javelin throw – Pakistan’s first individual medal in the history of the Olympic Games. And a bronze medal in the discus throw.

‘’In July, before you left, I recalled the well-known formula of Pierre de Coubertin, who had this very modern idea of resurrecting the Olympic Games: “The most important thing in the Olympic Games, he said, is not to win but to take part.”.

He added, Arshad and Haider, definitely won their medals, and magnificently. But all of you, Pakistani athletes, you took part, you competed, you went to the end of your strength to do the best you could. For that, you all deserve our respect and our admiration, and that of your country.

‘’It represents years of effort, often in solitude and without support or encouragement other than that of your families, friends and coaches, to participate in this unique event for any athlete: the Olympic and Paralympic Games’’.

The ambassador said, for two weeks, in August and September, you had this unique experience for athletes: living with other athletes from all over the world, interacting with competitors from the other side of the planet, sharing together the Olympic and Paralympic passion.

‘’And I would like to highlight the specific impact of the Paralympic Games. Paralympians are athletes, like any other – and many do not like to be considered heroes. But they are certainly less well-known than others, and the Paralympic competitions showed the world, including the Pakistani public, that accidents of genetics or life do not prevent anyone from achieving incredible feats’’.

He also saluted the eight young Pakistanis who travelled to France with the Right to Play association, which the Embassy was pleased to support and accompany for this great project which allowed them, among many other activities, to attend the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.

‘’ A big thank you to Mr. Ali Khayam and the Right to Play team for your dedication to promoting sport as a tool for social integration, particularly for young girls. In this regard, the Embassy is proud to work with you for the organization of a women’s basketball tournament next month’’.

While dilating upon the French performance he said first of all, a real satisfaction with the performance of the French teams: with 64 medals including 16 gold, France ranks 5th at the Olympic Games, and 8th at the Paralympic Games with 75 medals including 19 gold. With more than 10 million tickets sold, the Paris 2024 Olympic Games have set a new record, held since 1996 by the Atlanta Games.

By adding the Paralympic Games, more than 12 million tickets were sold in total, one million more than at the London Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012.

And another figure to note: 263.000 tickets were sold for the Paralympic swimming competitions in September ; this is more than for the Olympic swimming events in August, and it is a very encouraging statistic which shows how popular Paralympic sport has become, and that it now attracts a very wide audience, the Ambassador added.
