OPINION: Human Rights: A perspective

JUSTICE (R) A. N. CHOWHAN

Justice( R) Ali Nawaz Chowhan delivered this lecture at Islamabad Serena Hotel as part of Oxbridge lecture series. Here are excerpts from the lecture.
PRELUDE: I begin telling you a seldom uttered truth which is also my strong belief that Pakistan was created to promote ideals of human rights not otherwise.
Now I pay my compliments and tributes to: a) Ms. Eleanor Roosevelt who chaired the Commission that drafted Universal Declaration of Human Rights .The EU who used GSP+ as an incentive for the creation of National Commission For Human Rights in Pakistan, c) To His Holiness The Pope for his unprecedented humanitarian efforts. I further take this opportunity of requesting His Holiness to intervene in Indian held Kashmir for the protection of human rights as in my view he is the only person who can intervene after the wars between the two neighbors, failure of diplomatic efforts and the UN resolutions. We have already requested His Holiness in this connection, d) To Dr. Angela Merkel, Chancellor for the Federal Republic of Germany for generously accepting refugees from Syria, e) The Oxbridge Society for its work to foster scholarship and particularly Mr. Irshad Ullah Khan whom I have given the alias the spirit of Islamabad—In German Zeigiest

Our regional security imperatives Gen ® Mirza Aslam Beg

Despite the Saudi snub, that they don’t need Pakistani mediation, Pakistan has taken a bold initiative to defuse the Saudi-Iranian tension. It is a step in the right direction, because Pakistan in its own right enjoys perfect sectarian harmony, despite so many induced sectarian riots and dastardly terrorists’ attacks. There is no sectarian discrimination in Pakistan. A capable person can reach the highest post of the President, Prime Minister, Chief Justice or Services Chiefs. Therefore, whatever steps Pakistan takes would have a meaning and sincerity of purpose. Saudis must realise that the regional geo-political momentum has overtaken the sectarian dispute – a change which we all must prepare to capitalise.

Terrorism in Pakistan, a gift of proxy wars: myth and reality

By Adnan Yousaf

It is believed that terrorism in Pakistan dates back to the cold war era when Pakistan chose to be an ally of western bloc against the Soviet bloc which were representing two completely different philosophies concerning class relations, individualism, governance, and the nature of power. This ideological confrontation directly shaped and characterized the forms that terrorism would take during the Cold War.

Before tracing out the roots of terrorism in Pakistan in the cold war era, it would be worthwhile to briefly review the macro dynamics of terrorism in Pakistan and the internal and external factors that are responsible for the evolution of terrorism in the country in its present shape.

SSU as a way forward in Sindh Police Tufail Ahmed

Sindh Police reform has emerged as a top priority in sindh Government’s commitment for strengthening the rule of law. Despite many past reform efforts, it is only about the last two years that AIG Maqsood Memon has viewed police reform as a critical developmental priority. The interest in reform stems from clear and overwhelming evidence that a fair, responsible, ethical and efficient criminal justice system is an important factor in the promotion of economic and social development and of human security. It also stems from the fact that law and order crisis in Karachi has continued to deepen over time, and in recent years the police have been increasingly unable to cope with its increased responsibilities, particularly with regard to combating serious crime.

In an unsavory situation of frenzy urbanization, energy drought, environmental hazards, infrastructure developments changing cities into jungle of concrete and wayward life style, Pakistan is scrambling to go green, cool and cozy.

Rise of electricity-generated appliances in residential, commercial and industrial sectors sans energy efficient systems and green building technologies has played a perilous role in impairing quality life. Strenuous efforts, though desperately demanded, are not off the charts. People being major stakeholders, most of market players and government have yet to act together to make a turnaround.
