Portugal assumes Presidency of Eurogroup

LISBON (DNA) -Mário José Gomes de Freitas Centeno (born 9 December 1966) is a Portuguese economist, academic and politician who has served as Minister of Finance since November 2015. He was elected president of the Eurogroup on 4 December 2017, for a mandate which will begin on 13 January 2018. Previously, he was a board member economist of the Bank of Portugal.

Russia hits hard at US over dangerous game in Syria

MOSCOW, JAN 22 (DNA) –  Russia has accused the United States of fomenting separatism in the Kurdish enclave of Afrin in Syria . Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the United States has been “discouraging the Kurds from dialogue” with the Syrian government. He said the U.S. actions in Syria are either a “deliberate provocation” or indicate lack of understanding of the situation by Washington.

US to withdraw from Iran nuclear deal, Pence assures Netanyahu

JERUSALEM, JAN 22 (DNA) – US Vice President Mike Pence is calling the Iranian nuclear deal a “disaster” and says the Trump administration will no longer certify it. Instead, Pence told the Israeli parliament on Monday that the administration is “committed to enact effective and lasting restraints on Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs.” Pence has received a warm welcome in Israel , which has praised the American decision last month to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel .

PHF names five foreign players for ‘Hall of Fame’

LAHORE (DNA) : Pakistan Hockey Federation on Monday announced the names of five foreign hockey players for their induction in the ‘Hall of Fame’ during the tour of World Hockey XI. The World XI will be touring Pakistan to play a two match series against Pakistan with the first match on January 19 at Karachi and the second on January 21 at Lahore. In a remarkable gesture, Pakistan Hockey Federation has arranged a Hall of Fame induction ceremony which will be held in Karachi, said a spokesman of the PHF here.

British MPs to vote on landmark Brexit bill

LONDON (DNA) – British MPs will vote Wednesday on a key Brexit bill whose turbulent passage through parliament has dealt damaging defeats to Prime Minister Theresa May, and which still faces stiff opposition in the upper house. The House of Commons is expected to pass the bill, which will incorporate thousands of pieces of EU legislation into the British statute books and repeal the legislation enshrining Britain’s EU membership. Eleven members of May’s Conservative party joined with opposition lawmakers last month to approve an amendment making sure that parliament will have a “meaningful vote” on the final Brexit deal.

Populists target vaccine decree ahead of Italy polls

ROME, JAN 17 (DNA) – Two Italian populist parties running in March elections are promising to scrap a compulsory vaccination law, a hot-button issue after a measles outbreak claimed four lives last year. Under the decree, which sparked heated public debate when it took effect six months ago, children cannot enrol in a creche or kindergarten unless they have been vaccinated against measles as well as nine other diseases. Parents of unvaccinated children aged between six and 16 face fines of up to 500 euros ($610).
