Women-led businesses facing severe financial stress: Founder IWCCI

ISLAMABAD, MAY 15 (DNA) – Samina Fazil, founder President, Islamabad Women’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IWCCI) has said the prolonged lockdown has damaged the businesses of women and they are desperately seeking help.

Women running small businesses are among the hardest hit their plight is not being taken seriously by the policymakers, she said.

Samina Fazil said that majority of the population comprises of the women but they are subjected to negative treatment announcements regarding helping out businesswomen never got implemented.

She added that the government officials are not taking issues confronting women seriously while the central bank is not genuinely interested in helping them ride out of the crisis.

She said that SBP is only interested in supporting commercial banks and big corporations while the stringent terms and conditions for forwarding loans to small businesses, cottage industry and microfinance sector are impossible to meet.

The SBP should announce interest-free loans for small businesses, cottage industry and microfinance sector if it is interested in an economic revival, she underlined.

Majority of women earn their bread and butter through the services sector which has been badly hit by the lockdown therefore the government should allow reopening of beauty parlours, boutiques, saloons, home kitchens, handicraft centres and consultancy services etc., she demanded.

The business leader said that many businesses run by women have collapsed while others will also fail soon if the government failed to come to their rescue.

Sources of income of women should be protected as they are bearing the brunt of the COVID-19 lockdown with thousands of them getting unemployed, she informed.

She lamented that the government is expanding the lockdown period but no financial package has been announced for women entrepreneurs who have been left on the mercy of the situation.

Samina Fazil said that businesswomen deserve relief in rent, taxation and utility bills and the Prime Minister Imran Khan should announce a grant for them as they are striving hard to survive amid the lockdown.=DNA

Zafar Mirza urges ‘rational use’ of personal protective equipment

ISLAMABAD, MAY 15 (DNA) – “No matter how much personal protective equipment we provide to doctors and nurses, unless it isn’t used rationally, no quantity will be enough to meet the demand,” Prime Minister’s Special Assistant on Health Dr Zafar Mirza said.

Addressing doctors and paramedical staff at the inauguration of a training centre in Islamabad, he said that along with the increase in the production of PPEs and N-95 masks, the government was also working on “promoting and training doctors on how to rationally use the equipment”.

“My vision is to not just reach to every health professional in Pakistan with this message that we care but also provide training to them,” Dr Mirza said, explaining that the training would educate doctors on what equipment to use in what circumstances, how to put it on and even how to dispose of it.

“Recently, we have launched a guideline on National Prevention and Control in a PDF version and I want all professionals to go through it,” the PM’s assistant said.

He pointed that National Guidelines on COVID-19 and PPEs have also been launched. All doctors will be trained according to these guidelines.

“We will send PDF files to you so that you have a reference document to consult in case of any ambiguity or confusion,” Dr Mirza said.

The training should not just be limited to a number of doctors but also other people at the hospital. “We want to show the people that we don’t just say that we care but also mean it,” he said.

Dr Mirza remarked that the programme will also be extended to private hospitals. “A helpline will also be set up where health care professionals can call in case of a shortage of equipment.”

He explained that a shortage persisted because of a disconnect between doctors and the hospital management. “I want to request hospitals to form committees for the management of PPEs.”

This will ensure active communication between both parties, he added. Dr Mirza lauded the efforts of health care professionals in Pakistan and thanked them for their service. DNA

PIAF calls for running businesses 24/7 till Eid

LAHORE, MAY 15 (DNA) – The Pakistan Industrial and Traders Association Front (PIAF) has appealed to the government to extend permission to the business community to run their businesses 24/7 till Eid ul Fitar.

All shopping malls should be reopened with strict implementation of the government SOPs in their true spirit.

PIAF chairman Mian Nauman Kabir, in a joint statement with senior vice chairman Nasir Hameed Khan and vice chairman Javed Iqbal Siddiqi, asked the government to avoid issuing threatening statements of re-imposing lockdown, as it would create panic further among the business community as well as the general public, who already visit markets in haste owing to time limitation, resulting into more rush.

PIAF chairman said that partial implementation of SOPs is just due to the limited market hours and changed routine owing to Ramazan.

Mian Nauman Kabir also observed that COVID-19 cases’ fatality rate in Pakistan is very low, at about 2% against the global figure, with recovery figure of more than 98% for which the government is appreciated for taking the immediate measure to control the outbreak in the country. At the same time, instead of creating an environment of fear and stress, we must recognize the symptoms and exercise as many precautions as possible, he suggested.

PIAF vice chairman Javed Iqbal Siddiqi pointed out that fatality rate in Pakistan due to COVID-19 is very low as compared to other diseases such as Hepatitis (which claims nearly 150,000 lives on average every year with over 400 people losing life daily), cancer and heart disease, claiming around 200,000 deaths in a year.

Quoting the data of WHO and UNICEF, he mentioned that only 30 to 40 percent population has access to clean drinking water in comparison to the world average of around 72 percent.

Javed Iqbal Siddiqi said that the Eid is an important event for the business community when business liabilities are paid off along with benefits to hundreds of thousands of people attached to different operations of the economic activities; hence, all economic areas should be functioning smoothly.

He observed that COVID-19 was diagnosed in China in Jan 2020 and till now no vaccine is available to treat Corona patients, which may take a year, therefore; it is very important to get adapted to the situation while recognizing all precautionary measures such as washing hands very often, wearing face masks, and avoiding unnecessary contact with everyone, etc instead of shutting the businesses altogether.

He pleaded that the ease in the lockdown would not only reduce the financial depressions but also progress the economic activities in the country. Therefore, the business community should be allowed to run businesses 24/7 till Eid, he demanded.=DNA

Playing entire India series in Adelaide gets Head’s nod

MELBOURNE (dna) – Australia vice captain Travis Head backed on Thursday the idea of playing the entire test series against India in a  bio-secure  Adelaide Oval to ensure the lucrative fixture goes ahead later this year.

Cricket Australia (CA) is banking heavily on the series, reportedly worth A$300 million ($195 million) in revenue, to help it cope with a financial crisis triggered by the coronavirus pandemic.

The South Australian Cricket Association (SACA) has pitched Adelaide Oval as a test hub for the series which might end up being played behind closed doors and at a single venue because of travel and other restrictions forced by the pandemic.

Head said his home ground, where an on-site hotel was being constructed, could handle the pressure of hosting consecutive matches.

“If it comes down to that, I know that it will definitely be able to cope and withstand back-to-back test matches,” said the South Australia skipper.

“We ve had instances where there ll be A-League games, rugby league or concerts going on and… the (curator) has been able to prepare a wicket and drop it in the middle of the square, day of the game or two days out of the game.

“And you wouldn t even notice as a player.”

The Indian cricket board has said the tourists would be ready to spend two weeks in quarantine in Australia if that helped the tour go ahead as planned.

The teams are scheduled to play four tests and three one-day internationals in December and January but efforts are on to squeeze in a fifth
