Reema speaks out against airing of Turkish drama ‘Ertugrul Gazi’ on national TV

LAHORE (Dna) – Pakistani veteran actress Reema Khan has opposed airing of Turkish drama Ertugrul Gazi on national television (PTV).

During the Ramazan show she hosts on a private channel, the actress said that broadcasting foreign contents on national television channel will harm the fame and work frequency of Pakistan’s artists and directors.

We have our own content in bulk which we should on-air instead of going for foreign scripts, she added.

Reema said that our actors are sitting idle in their houses due to this ignorant behavior.

Lockdown in Punjab tightened for three days, several routes in Lahore closed with containers

LAHORE (Dna) – Markets across Lahore will remain closed for three days on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and to strictly enforce the lockdown the Punjab government has closed several routes by placing containers on Thursday.

According to sources, containers have been placed outside Data Darbar, Civil Secretariat and Urdu Bazaar, while containers have also been placed and roads have been closed on the occasion of Youm-e-Ali.

Meanwhile, the Punjab CM chaired an important meeting where he was apprised of important issues. The chief minister has ordered to close markets found violating SOPs from Monday.

On the occasion, CM Bazdar directed the concerned officers that violation of government orders and SOPs would not be tolerated under any circumstances. Markets and bazaars in Punjab should be kept closed for three days on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Earlier, the provincial government had warned of strict lockdown and action in case of violation of the standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Punjab Law Minister Raja Basharat said that the government had decided to strictly implement the SOPs of lockdown and it would also be ensured that the orders for shutdown of shops for three days a week were also complied with by the public and the business community.

The minister expressed his apprehensions that the SOPs were not being followed properly in several markets during relaxation in lockdown during the last three days.

Open violation of the SOPs and heavy rush of people had been witnessed in the markets during the lockdown relaxation hours, he added.

He said that it was a responsibility of shopkeepers to ensure strict implementation of the SOPs for lockdown in the markets. He said that shops would remain closed on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays (three days) and shopkeepers would have to follow the rules, adding that no one would be facilitated during these three days.

52 shops sealed over violation of SOPs

Earlier today, the district administration sealed 45 shops in Shah Alam Market and seven shops in Chungi Amar Sadhu for not maintaining social distancing protocols enforced to contain spread of coronavirus.

Customers and shopkeepers were found flouting the social distancing rule, nor were they wearing face masks and gloves. As a result, the authorities sealed the shops.

Meanwhile, in view of Youm-e-Ali, authorities sealed and closed entry and exit points of all markets of Walled City including Shah Alam market, Akbari Mandi and Circular Road.

Markets across the country were seen teeming after opening up on Monday for the first time in over a month as the nationwide lockdown was eased despite a steep rise in the number of Covid-19 infections.

Businessmen have criticized abrupt sealing of the markets and said that administration should have informed him beforehand so that they could have made necessary arrangements.

Earlier, Karachi’s district administration sealed three markets over violation of SOPs and ignoring precautionary measures imposed by provincial government in order to contain the spread of novel coronavirus pandemic.

The district administration was of the view that the shopkeepers did not comply with the condition of the sanitizer and were not wearing masks and gloves.

According to the SOPs issued by the Sindh home department, shopkeepers were not to cater to any customers without face masks, while also ensuring that a distance of at least six feet was maintained between each person.

The regulations also prohibited physical contact, such as handshakes and other greetings, between workers and customers. This, too, was ignored.

PM Khan, world leaders demand free coronavirus vaccine for all

World leaders past and present insisted on Thursday that any eventual COVID-19 vaccines and treatments should be made available to everyone, free of charge.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan were among more than 140 signatories of a letter saying any vaccine should not be patented while the science should be shared between nations.

The World Health Assembly, the policy-setting body of the UN’s World Health Organization, holds its annual general meeting next week.

The signatories called on the WHA to rally behind the cause.

“Governments and international partners must unite around a global guarantee which ensures that, when a safe and effective vaccine is developed, it is produced rapidly at scale and made available for all people, in all countries, free of charge,” the letter said.

“The same applies for all treatments, diagnostics, and other technologies for COVID-19.”

The letter was signed by Senegalese President Macky Sall and Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo.

Former presidents and prime ministers among the signatories included Shaukat Aziz, Jan Peter Balkenende, Jose Manuel Barroso, Gordon Brown, Helen Clark, Felipe Gonzalez, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Aleksander Kwasniewski, Mary McAleese, Olusegun Obasanjo and Juan Manuel Santos.

The letter comes amid fury in France after pharmaceutical giant Sanofi said it would reserve first shipments of any COVID-19 vaccine for the United States.

The French multinational’s chief executive Paul Hudson said the United States would get first dibs because its government was helping fund the vaccine research.

His comments drew outrage Thursday from officials and health experts.

The letter ahead of the WHA said it was not the time to leave the task of resolving the pandemic to market forces or let the interests of wealthy companies and governments come before the need to save lives.

African Union Chairperson Ramaphosa said: “As the countries of Africa, we are resolute that the COVID-19 vaccine must be patent-free, rapidly made and distributed, and free for all.

“Nobody should be pushed to the back of the vaccine queue because of where they live or what they earn.”

Balanced, skillful diplomacy essential for Pakistan amid evolving new world order

ISLAMABAD, MAY 14 (DNA) – The present world order is at stake due to the coronavirus pandemic and the new world order is apparently starting to take shape with China taking the lead. Pakistan however should not opt to pillion-ride with China on every issue and must engage in skillful balancing of its relations with other important countries as well.

The thoughts were shared by former foreign secretary Riaz Hussain Khokhar in a webinar titled ‘Impact of Covid-19 on Pakistan’s International Relations at Regional and Global Levels’. The online session was organized by Institute of Policy Studies (IPS), Islamabad, as part of its ongoing webinar series ‘Covid-19: Global Challenges, National Response’. The discussion was jointly chaired by former secretary finance Dr Waqar Masood Khan and Executive President IPS Khalid Rahman, whereas the discussants included Ambassador (r) Tajammul Altaf, IPS’ senior research associate, Syed Muhammad Ali, senior research fellow and Ambassador (r) Ayaz Wazir.

Regarding the Covid-19 outbreak, Khokhar stated that Pakistan’s friendship with China has once again withstood the test of time. This strong relationship could also prove vital in bringing much-needed reforms to the weak health infrastructure in the country as well as the vulnerable sectors of education, agriculture, science and technology, and environment, which have been exposed in the wake of the pandemic. Pakistan’s Covid-19 graph for positive cases as well as for deaths is expected to go up with time and so it must put its act together at the earliest as failure to do so will make things very difficult for the country to handle.

The speaker advised Pakistan to maintain balanced relations with other countries such as the US alongside China in view of its own national interests. He warned that the US president is trying to whip up hysteria about China ahead of the US elections, and the tussle between the two countries including the issue of South China Sea could may well make the US pile pressure on Pakistan.

Talking about the current global scenario, the speaker said that a lot of economic disruption is going to take place due to Covid-19 whereas Pakistan’s gap between the haves and have-nots is also expanding rapidly. China, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, just like all other countries, are faced with tough times themselves due to the pandemic and may not be able to reschedule their loans to Pakistan very favorably.

Throwing light on the developing scenario in Afghanistan, Khokhar said that he ethnic mosaic of the country has been damaged considerably and there could be no peace until it is repaired. Pakistan could play a role in further facilitating talks between the Afghan government and Taliban, but it is not in a good position to do so because of the mistrust by both the entities. The spread of coronavirus in Afghanistan is also going to increase, and this will cause problems for Pakistan as well due to the flow of people crossing the border, he said.

Having spent about ten years of his service engaging directly with India, the former foreign secretary said that India is already making war sounds even in the current situation and may forge an attack on Pakistan. It would however want Pakistan to escalate the situation to shift the blame and justify its attack. He was sure that there were least chances of the two countries to engage in any meaningful dialogue in near future due to the distrust factor, and the gap, according to the speaker, was widening due to the attitude of the current government in India.

Speaking of the Kashmir issue, Khokhar said that it is nearly a non-issue for the international community just like Palestine. Pakistan does have an option to take the issue to international organizations but the problem is that the major powers operate as per their own interests and would not stand by our side. The UN Security Council is a broad-based entity on its face, but the absence of any Muslim country as its permanent member clearly shows the nonseriousness on its part. Even the OIC does not have a strong voice among the comity of nations.

He said India has already put SAARC on a ventilator, making the options for regional cooperation very limited. The ECO may offer a ray of hope for the country, especially keeping in view the evolving shape of the new world order, and more such avenues should be carefully explored to communicate our concerns over Kashmir issue to the world community.

“Pakistan cannot write off the Kashmir issue altogether with India continually engaged in a genocide in the region. The situation demands fundamental decisions about Pakistan’s stance and its future strategy on Kashmir to be taken as a nation, and those decisions should be taken through consultations involving the government, politicians, other stakeholders and the people in general,” Khokhar added.=DNA

Senate passes resolution to acknowledge Chinese support

ISLAMABAD, May 14 (DNA):The Senate on Thursday passed a resolution unanimously by expressing its deep appreciation to the Chinese government and people for their unflinching role and timely assistance to Pakistan in the current coronavirus crisis.

“The Senate of Pakistan, taking note of China’s strong support and timely assistance to Pakistan during the current Coronavirus Crisis, expresses its deep appreciation to the Chinese government and people for their unflinching role as ‘all weather friends’ of Pakistan,” said the resolution moved by the leader of the opposition Raja Zafarul Haq on behalf of all parties in the house.

The resolution said China’s support to Pakistan has helped combat COVID-19 by protecting our people and saving lives as well as providing our health workers with testing kits, protective gear and ventilators at a time when these were badly needed plus sending medical teams.

“The Senate of Pakistan also commends the government and people of China, led by President Xi Jinping, who showed leadership in this crisis through clarity of vision by taking decisive and timely measures to combat the Coronavirus effectively in China. As ‘Iron Brothers’, both Pakistan and China are collectively confronting this ‘common enemy’, the coronavirus, which is a threat to humanity, irrespective of country, race or religion.”

In this context, the Senate of Pakistan rejects the baseless propaganda against China from certain quarters, which stems from geopolitical rivalry and is more an attempt to divert attention from their own internal failings as it has no factual basis.

“The Senate feels that this resolution,  just prior to May 21, which marks the 69th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and China on May 21, 1951, is an auspicious occasion to celebrate the resilience of our time-tested friendship, which is evident from China’s consistent support to Pakistan on Kashmir, on CPEC and now on COVID-19,” the resolution further said.

China media to host seminar on locust control

DNA

ISLAMABAD, May 14 (():  A major Chinese Media House, the China Economic Net will host a seminar on Pakistan-China joint efforts to control locust.

Pakistan has once again been plagued with the problem of locusts, which inflicted substantial damage to farmlands thus threatening food security of the country and prompting the government to seek help from Chinese experts to tackle the issue.

In this regard, the China Economic Net has organised a China-Pakistan trade Hotline Cloud Salon with the theme of ‘Joint Efforts in Locust Control’ on May 20, as Pakistan’s agriculture sector is now suffering from the worst desert locust infestation in 27 years.

The seminar is aimed at stressing the urgency of joint efforts to combat locusts and strengthen regular thinking and forward-looking planning.

Earlier in March, President Arif Alvi and Chinese President Xi Jinping witnessed the signing of an agreement on strengthening plant disease and insect pest control in Beijing.

To assist in dealing with this outbreak, China sent aid of 300,000 litres of pesticides and 50 sets of equipment to Pakistan.

The Chinese government delivered the pesticide sprays to the government of Pakistan which it promised late last in April to combat locusts in the country, which are now emerging as a threat to food security.

Beijing had promised to provide malathion (insecticide) along with high-efficiency remote sprayers and other equipment to Pakistan in a bid to control the locusts which are affecting a huge area of land in the country.

In addition to the sprays, plant protection drones, also included in the assistance package, were sent to the country.
