Pakistan’s Waziristan fast becoming tourism hotspot: Report

DNA

ISLAMABAD, Aug. 14 : Waziristan is fast becoming a tourism hotspot, as it provides some fascinated places to visit, says a report published by Gwadar Pro on Friday.

Tribal youth from South and North Waziristan are extensively utilising social media platforms to promote the stunning beauty of the erstwhile lawless districts bordering Afghanistan ever since Pakistan Army wiped out militants here.

The report says, this is a success story, as thousands of people have started travelling to Waziristan, including families, from the country’s settled areas, said Zahid Wazir, an analyst from North Waziristan, who has vast exposure to matters related to the tribal region.

Zahid Wazir said that Waziristan had the potential to divert tourism spotlight from Swat, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, at least for the people of Sindh province and South Punjab, not to mention foreign tourists at this point of time.

He said that the CPEC Western route will also connect these areas with the rest of the country, which will further boost tourism in Waziristan.

Wazir said that many factors contributed to this unexpected but pleasant development, including better roads network, which made the areas easily accessible.

However, the biggest contributor is the change of mindset and social acceptability for people of non-tribal areas among the tribesmen as they went through untold hardships in camps in settled areas after they were displaced due to military operations in the past, he said.

Saifee Wazir, a professional cameraman struggling to set up a firm to promote tourism in Waziristan, said that there were still issues for people of other areas to freely access these districts.

The government needs to encourage people and grant people NOCs for bringing tourists to Waziristan without any hassle.

These districts could become a new tourism hotspot in the country, he said optimistically. He said that due to the presence of hardcore militants in the area for decades, the Army is still not allowing non-local people to freely visit Waziristan.

Hayat Preghal, a political activist from the area and admin of numerous social media pages on Waziristan, observed that tourism sector could become an industry in these districts if the government developed a few spots and built quality hotels there.

The local people are shy of investing their money in tourism facilities because the uncertainty is still prevailing there, he said.

Hayat Preghal added that Waziristan had two trade corridors with Afghanistan, via Angoor Ada and Ghulam Khan. Also, these districts produce the best of pine nuts, apple, vegetables and precious herbs.

The government has also established an agriculture park on a vast piece of land in Ladha. He expected that Waziristan will become a tourism and trade hub in days to come, which might amaze fellow Pakistan who otherwise only imagined bloodshed in this beautiful terrain.

Pak-Sino Universities to establish research center on hybrid rice

DNA

Islamabad, Aug. 14 : Wuhan University-University of the Punjab Joint Research Center for Honglian Hybrid Rice is going to be established this year.

This was reported by Gwadar Pro on Friday quoting the official website of China Association for Science and Technology.

This move will boost the development of high-yield hybrid rice in Pakistan, a major rice exporter in the world, to improve domestic food safety as well as supplement rice export.

Honglian hybrid rice is one of the three major types of cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) of rice (Oryza sativa L.) that has been commercially used in hybrid rice seed production.

In China, it is a well-known hybrid rice type developed for over 40 years by Zhu Yingguo, the late member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and expert in plant genetics and breeding. By 2020, the global acreage of Honglian hybrid rice has surpassed about 26.67 million hectares.

The production of Honglian hybrid rice in Pakistan can reach around 7,500 kg per hectare, nearly three times as much as that of many other rice varieties, according to Zhu Renshan, professor-level senior engineer of Wuhan University who is now in charge of the international cooperation on this type of rice.

“A lot of hybrid rice varieties’ high-yield performance is only confined to a specific area. In contrast, Honglian hybrid rice can create bumper harvest not only in China but also in many other countries like Pakistan,” Zhu Renshan said.

Honglian hybrid rice adapts well to Pakistan’s climate. Even under extreme high temperature or changeable weather, the seed setting rate is still stable, much higher than that of other hybrid rice varieties. Moreover, Honglian rice seed production costs less. Therefore, farmers can get higher income at the same investment.

It’s also worth mentioning that Honglian hybrid rice is eco-friendly because of the higher nitrogen use efficiency characteristic, exhibiting vigor and good yield even in barren soil. In this way fertilization can be decreased.

In 2019, the exchange visits between the two nations’ agricultural experts on Honglian hybrid rice had been done.

Having seen Honglian hybrid rice does so well in the six experimental plots in Pakistan, the two countries’ professionals are confident in its future performance when sowed at a large scale.

Next, besides lifting local cultivation, the research center is planning a series of technical cooperation and scientific research. Seed production technologies will be gradually transferred to Pakistan. Furthermore, they will also provide technical support on pest control.

Though COVID-19 pandemic is still persists, Pak-Sino cooperation related to Honglian hybrid rice keeps progressing.

The two countries’ experts are communicating online and have held a video meeting of technical guidance. Earlier this year, the research team of Wuhan University delivered seeds from China to Pakistan via international logistics, and the rice will be harvested in October.

Former South Africa captain Smith breaks silence over race bias claims

JOHANNESBURG : Former South Africa captain Graeme Smith on Thursday responded to allegations of bias against black players by stating that he had “personal relationship challenges” with several other players during his time in charge.

Smith, currently Cricket South Africa´s director of cricket, has come under fire in recent weeks for appointing former Test wicketkeeper Mark Boucher as national team coach.

He has also been accused of allowing black players to feel isolated during his time as captain.

Smith, who captained South Africa in a world record 108 Test matches from 2003 until 2014, as well as 149 one-day internationals, said he realised early in his captaincy that it would not be possible to please everyone in his team.

Former wicketkeeper Thami Tsolekile was particularly critical of Smith during a radio interview on Tuesday, blaming Smith for keeping him out of the Test team after Boucher suffered a career-ending injury on a 2012 tour of England.

Fast bowler Makhaya Ntini earlier said he felt “lonely” as a player despite playing in 101 Tests and he also felt he was unfairly dropped from the team towards the end of his career.

Although Tsolekile, who has subsequently been banned for 12 years for his role in a match-fixing scandal in a domestic competition, was in the squad as a reserve wicketkeeper, the gloves were handed to leading batsman AB de Villiers.

“I look at many respected captains around the world and there are plenty of players who felt they were not given a fair chance,” said Smith in a statement which he said was issued in his personal capacity.

He said Australia´s Steve Waugh was an example of a highly regarded captain who had his detractors from former team-mates.

Smith cited Shaun Pollock and Lance Klusener as two leading players who were dropped from the team before they were ready to retire.

“There were very emotional discussions because they are both legends of our cricket history.”

He said Pollock and Ntini had to make way in similar circumstances because South Africa were seeking more bowling firepower.

Smith added that he personally was “gutted” when he was not selected for the 2003 World Cup – he eventually came into the squad as an injury replacement – and again later in his career when he was dropped from the one-day side.

“I felt I still had more to give in ODI cricket but (replacement) Quinton de Kock has shown that it was his time,” he said.

“And, over time, I have grown to understand that it was the right call for the team. And that has always been the crux of the decisions made in my time.”

Smith sympathised with Tsolekile because wicketkeeping was a specialist role and it was a trend in international cricket for wicketkeepers to have long careers, keeping other capable glovemen out of the team.

He said the decision to pick De Villiers ahead of Tsolekile in 2012 was made by “a whole panel of selectors” and that then-coach Gary Kirsten had told Tsolekile he was reserve to De Villiers following Boucher´s injury.

In recent weeks, a group of former black players and coaches have criticised events in South African cricket, including the appointment of Boucher as national coach ahead of black coaches who have stronger formal coaching credentials.

Boucher has only a level two coaching certificate which is given to former players without having to attend courses.

The group, describing themselves as “concerned former cricketers and coaches” had a virtual meeting with the board of Cricket South Africa last weekend.

Smith said allegations and insinuations against him were “extremely hurtful and I deny them in the strongest possible sense.”

ISLAMABAD, AUG 14 (DNA) : President Dr. Arif Alvi Friday conferred Nishan-e-Pakistan, the highest Civil Award of the country, on the veteran Kashmiri Hurriyat leader, Syed Ali Geelani on Pakistan’s Independence Day for his services and sacrifices in the Kashmiris’ ongoing struggle for securing their right to self-determination.

Nishan-e-Pakistan was conferred on Syed Ali Geelani during a prestigious flag hoisting ceremony at the President House in Islamabad. The award was received by the Hurriyat AJK leaders on behalf of Syed Ali Geelani.

Addressing the ceremony, Dr. Arif Alvi said, “Pakistan will not leave Kashmiris alone. The Kashmir issue has been debated at the UN Security Council for four times during the last one year, which is a big success of Pakistan’s foreign policy.

“Pakistan has also released its political map, reflecting true aspirations of its people as well as Kashmiris. The new map shows Pakistan’s principled stance on Kashmir issue.”

President Alvi reaffirms Pakistan’s support to Kashmir cause on Independence Day

Addressing the ceremony after hoisting national flag, President Dr Arif Alvi said the country faced multiple challenges after it came into existence in 1947 as it rendered thousands of sacrifices in war on terror and eventually overcame the menaces of terrorism and extremism.

He said Pakistan generously hosted as many as 3.5 million Afghan refugees, out whom 2.7 million are still residing in the country, in stark contrast to western countries that didn’t even take in one hundred immigrants.President Alvi maintained Pakistan responded to Indian belligerence with peace overtures, slamming the neighbouring country for making the lives of its minorities miserable.

COVID-19 vaccine will be free for Americans: officials

If a COVID-19 vaccine is proven effective, the US will ensure it’s distributed for free to all Americans, officials said Thursday, underscoring there will be no shortcuts on safety.

“We are not at all reducing the regulatory rigor with which we will evaluate and hopefully approve vaccines,” Paul Mango, a senior health department official, told reporters.

Washington has invested more than $10 billion in six vaccine projects and signed contracts guaranteeing the delivery of hundreds of millions of doses should they be approved following clinical trials. The vaccine doses themselves will be paid for by the government.

Doctors or clinics that administer them will have to be paid but these costs should mostly be covered by private and public insurers.

“Most” commercial insurers have agreed to waive any out-of-pocket costs to their customers, said Mango.

“We are on track to deliver hundreds of millions of doses by January 2021,” he added.

Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), said he was “cautiously optimistic” that at least one of the six vaccines the US had invested in would come through by the end of the year.

Critics of President Donald Trump have expressed worries that the administration may bypass safety precautions to announce a vaccine is available before the election on November 3 — a charge Mango denied.

“We are not at all reducing the regulatory rigor with which we will evaluate and hopefully approve vaccines,” he said.

Russia this week approved a vaccine even before the start of the last phase of clinical trials, in which the drug is injected into tens of thousands of volunteers to verify its effectiveness and safety.

“I hope that the Russians have actually definitively proven that the vaccine is safe and effective, but I seriously doubt that they’ve done that,” Anthony Fauci, the United States’ top infectious disease official said at a virtual panel hosted by National Geographic.

Collins compared Russia’s vaccine, which they have dubbed “Sputnik V” after the Soviet Union’s pioneering satellites, to a game of “Russian roulette.”
