Govt disappointed masses, businesspersons during last two years

DNA

ISLAMABAD, AUG 21 – Former President ICCI Shahid Rasheed Butt on Friday said the government disappointed masses and businesspersons during the last two years.

Not a single promise was fulfilled, there was no move towards Naya Pakistan while runaway inflation continued to hit masses badly, he said.

Shahid Rasheed Butt said that political and economic instability has increased, confusion over critical national and international issues persists, and mafia remained uncontrolled despite tall claims.

He said that the government has failed to deliver on promises and it is unable to carry the heavy burden of its expansive promises while the clarity of ideas and policies is still a far cry for it.

The business leader said that PTI has not ensured consistency in policies; it lacks the will to take bold steps, while frequent policy reversals have damaged the economy.

The economy was a strong point of PTI before elections which proved otherwise while the claim to establish a corruption-free society also proved pointless as exploitation has increased while an uncontrollable mafia has made the life of people a living hell.

NAB was used against political opponents while added to the political divisions while relations between center and provinces worsened.

Incompetence was shielded through slogans against corruption but musses are not ready to buy it anymore and reforms in the institutions remained confined to speeches and media statements.

Now the majority of the people and businessmen think that the PTI government has failed to stabilize the country’s economy and deliver according to its manifesto or people’s expectations.

Some people are of the opinion that all pledges made with the voters during 2018 elections had been ignored by the PTI leadership and it may not be able to deliver during its remaining tenure.

The only thing in which the government deserves some praise is supporting the poor through Ehsaas programme, he said.

Tributes pour in for Hasil Bizenjo during NA, Senate sessions

ISLAMABAD : Parliamentarians paid tribute to National Party chairman Mir Hasil Khan Bizenjo who passed away on Thursday night after a prolonged battle with lung cancer.

PML-N MNA Khawaja Asif paid tribute to the principled politics of Mir Hasil Bizenjo, telling the Speaker to obtain the lower house’s consent to postpone the session in light of the politician’s passing.

PML-N’s Senator Mushahidullah Khan said that those people who do not stray from their principles never die but always remain alive in the hearts of the people.

“It is normally very difficult for someone whose father is such a towering personality to carve out his own legacy,” he said, adding that despite that Hasil Bizenjo had managed to make a name for himself in politics.

He said that the Bizenjo family had always spoken the truth and never thought about the price they would have to pay. “They did keep paying a price all their lives for telling the truth,” he said.

“Did you ever see hatred in his eyes for anyone? He was merciful and loving towards everyone,” said Mushahidullah. “Where do we find someone like Hasil?”

PPP leader Sherry Rehman said that Bizenjo lived according to his terms just like he said he would. “People like me, women, were always provided encouragement and support by Bizenjo,” she said. “He told me to remain steadfast and not listen to people who thought I did not belong in mainstream politics,” added the PPP senator.

Rehman said that Bizenjo was like a ray of light at a time of darkness in Pakistani politics.

PTM MNA Moshin Dawar said it was very difficult to fill the void left by Bizenjo’s death. “I think this session [of the National Assembly] should be postponed to honour his memory,” he said, describing it as a “huge loss” for the country.

“The lot of politicians that he belonged to are decreasing day by day in Pakistan,” he said.

PTI MNA Ramesh Kumar said that he had known the late politician for the past 20-22 years as a friend. “Ever since I stepped into politics, I was his friend,” he said. “Even till this day, I remember the things that he talked about with me.”

Kumar paid tribute to Bizenjo, stating that those who did good deeds, their names used to remain alive long after they were gone.

Senator Sarfaraz Bugti said that the entire country was in mourning over such a huge loss and that Balochistan had been deprived of a great leader.

“I was in very close contact with him as home minister. Where he was in favour of dialogue, he was also a believer in establishment of the writ of the state,” added Bugti.

The Balochistan home minister said that Bizenjo continued his great legacy. “The more we pay tribute to him, the less it is,” he added.

Mir Hasil Khan Bizenjo: A brief overview of the veteran politician’s career

Born in 1958 into a family that played a crucial role in Balochistan’s political landscape, Sen Bizenjo entered politics when he joined the Pakistan National Party (PNP). His father, Mir Ghous Baksh Bizenjo, was once the province’s governor and struggled for the rights of the Baloch people.

The senator, throughout his political career, spoke up for the Baloch people’s rights but categorically opposed armed resistance and militancy, choosing peaceful ways instead.

He also spoke in favour of a quick repatriation of the Afghan refugees, given that the situation in their home country has stabilised considerably.

A respected figure in Pakistani politics, he was elected a Member of National Assembly (MNA) twice in the general elections of 1990 and 1997.

He founded the Balochistan National Democratic Party (BNDP), which eventually merged with the Balochistan National Movement (BNM) in 2003, becoming the National Party (NP).

Interestingly, although his party boycotted the 2008 general elections in protest over the Balochistan situation, he was elected a senator in 2009.

Bizenjo became NP’s president in 2014 after the party came into the national spotlight with the PML-N’s help. His party faced considerable competition from the BAP, ANP, and the PPP.

The senator was again elected on the position in the 2013 general elections, with his party bagging 11 seats in the provincial assembly and one seat in the National Assembly.

He took office as the federal minister for ports and shipping on May 20, 2016, with then-president Mamnoon Hussain administering the oath.

Subsequently, during caretaker prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi’s tenure, he served as Federal Minister of Maritime Affairs, from August 2017 to May 2018. He did not contest the 2018 general elections.

Back in July 2019, when a no-confidence resolution was submitted against Senate Chairperson Sadiq Sanjrani, nine political parties of the Opposition-led Rahbar Committee had named Bizenjo as the joint candidate for the post.

Pakistan-Saudi ties have always remained cordial: Qureshi

ISLAMABAD : Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, rejecting speculations about Pakistan-Saudi ties, said on Friday the country’s relations with the Kingdom have invariably remained cordial and hoped that they will remain so in future as well.

In a statement, Qureshi, who is in China on a two-day official visit, hailed Riyadh’s categorical stance on Israel as historic.

He said he will represent Pakistan at the second round of Pakistan-China Foreign Ministers’ strategic dialogue.

He will also have an audience with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi with matters of bilateral cooperation in different sectors, including early completion of China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects, to come under discussion.

Foreign Minister Qureshi said the government brought the Kashmir dispute to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for debate for three times after a gap of 55 years with the cooperation of China.

He said Pakistan and China have brought under control coronavirus to a great extent, adding this is his first visit to the neighbouring country after a considerable decline in coronavirus cases.

Both countries are familiar with important regional changes that have taken place, he added.

Standard & Poor’s keeps Pakistan’s rating outlook stable

ISLAMABAD : New York-based rating agency Standard & Poor’s (S&P) has affirmed Pakistan’s long-term outlook ‘stable’ with long-term ‘B’ rating.

The rating agency has also kept short-term ‘B’ rating.

Standard & Poor’s said that the country’s rating remains constrained by a narrow tax base and domestic and external security risks, which continue to be high. The rating agency said that the Covid-19 pandemic exacerbated Pakistan’s economic downturn but forecast the real GDP to recover to 1.3 per cent during the current fiscal year.

“We expect the sovereign’s credit metrics to remain under pressure for the next two to three years”, the S&P said.

The agency, nevertheless, noted that the government had made solid progress toward important fiscal and economic reforms prior to the start of the global coronavirus outbreak, and reform momentum should return once the pandemic was better contained. Multilateral and official funding will remain critical to Pakistan’s external debt sustainability.

It said the stable outlook reflected rating agency’s expectations that funding from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and other partners, along with a recent improvement in Pakistan’s balance of payments position will be sufficient for the country to meet its considerable external obligations over the next 12 months.

Pakistan’s economy is likely to recover only gradually as the global pandemic is progressively better contained. The agency forecast a modest expansion of 1.3pc in Pakistan’s economy in FY21.

Maximum pressure, utmost resistance

Syed Mohammad Ali Hosseini

The story of JCPOA (joint comprehensive plan of action) is a well known diplomatic experience that according to many analysts is also the most distinguished example of peaceful settlement of disputes via diplomacy. In the importance of this breakthrough, it suffices to say that 10 years of breathtaking negotiations was dedicated to reach such international agreement that came to its legal strength with UNSC- Resolution 2231 in 2015.

Against many peace loving nations that were content of this pact, some warmonger and rabble- rouser countries besides the other deceived ones in our neighborhood, found the JCPOA agreement something perilous.   Political change in the US and shift of power between the internal rivals in this country also added an extra weight to the anxious sides.

By getting closer to the presidential election of the US, Trump administration that considers itself on the verge of failure is looking for turning points to grab the vote of yet undecided or bargaining sections.  In search of such determining points, many try and errors has occurred. Ann exation of west bank, normalization of the Covid- like Zionist existence in the region and increasing pressures on Iran in UNSC and IAEA are some of these examples.

Regarding the issue of I.R.Iran, US failures in its Iran-policy overlap its successes. The recent example of that is the last week story of UNSC that in a very humiliating effort, 90 percent of Security Council members didn’t accept US proposal for extending arm embargo on Iran and just the US itself and  one non permanent member of the council (Dominican; that perhaps couldn’t resist) supported the resolution. This result had many lessons for the US administration to learn but they are still continuing their wrong path of imposing maximum pressure on Iran.

In a new move, US who unilaterally withdrawn JCPOA and expected the others to do so (but they didn’t), is trying to force the other participants of JCPOA to terminate this agreement by activating Snapback mechanism that was predicted in JCPOA itself. It looks very ridiculous that a country that is not any more a member of JCPOA insists on implication of Snapback provision predicted in it; something that we consider both illegal and illegitimate. Predicting a double defeat for Americans, they may resort to IAEA leverage to hit their expected pick, which may with Iran’s possible reaction, sacrifice IAEA high safeguard mechanism for Trump’s internal achievements.

Regardless of what US current administration is going to do in the case of I.R.Iran, the vigilant eyes in our region should be so considerate of the consequences of such short-sighted and election oriented hasty games. They should be thoughtful of Iran’s reaction to disruption of lengthy negotiated JCPOA.  Anyhow, Iran will not remain passive if Snapback be activated or Iran peaceful atomic program (regardless of perfect cooperative background of Iran interaction with IAEA) be politicized again. Many options like withdrawal of NPT, withdrawal of Additional Protocol, conclusion of all commitments in JCPOA and etc can come on the table if Iran finds further patience nugatory.

Although Iran’s reaction may change from patience to synchronized reciprocal actions, there is one permanent element that will never change in Iranian positions and it’s the Iranian mindset of bully countering and unilateralism resisting. Regarding the fact that Haste makes waste, we didn’t exit from JCPOA when US did it and showed too much patience to check the other partner’s adherence. Regarding our sit-tight policy, even in the time of European weakness in implementing the agreement and even in the time that Iran was not benefited from the economic predicted provisions, we showed too much resistance and didn’t change our fundamental stance of negotiation-first. If today US is determined to break this patience, we are economic resilient, self reliant and credible enough to answer them.

Joe Biden accepts democratic nomination, pledges to end ‘darkness’ in US

Democratic presidential candidate for the 2020 US election, Joe Biden, on Thursday promised to end the ‘darkness’ of the Trump presidency, calling for the country to remain united and optimistic at a time when racial tensions are high in the country.

“The current president has cloaked America in darkness for much too long. Too much anger, too much fear, too much division,” Biden said.

“If you entrust me with the presidency, I will draw on the best of us, not the worst. I will be an ally of the light, not the darkness,” he said.

“It’s time for us, for we the people, to come together.”

Speaking in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware, but with an audience almost entirely online or on television, Biden’s acceptance speech reflected the enormity of the shutdown that has upended life across the United States in the battle against the deadly coronavirus.

And Biden, 77, urged Americans in blistering terms to punish Trump for the chaos that has seen more than 170,000 deaths and economic calamity.

“We lead the world in deaths,” he said in the 22-minute speech, calling Trump’s performance “unforgivable.”

“On day one” of his own presidency, Biden said, he would implement a national COVID-19 plan and mandate mask wearing.

Biden is on his third White House bid after failing to win the nomination in 1988 and 2008.

But after months of relentless mockery from Trump and other Republicans who claim Biden is senile, the veteran politician’s speech was markedly fluent and always full of passion.

Democrats hope the strong performance, as well as the vice presidential nomination of Kamala Harris — the first black woman ever to make it onto the White House ticket of a major party — will deflate those attacks.

Trump hits Pennsylvania

Biden leads in almost every national opinion poll and also in the crucial swing states.

But Trump is fighting hard in what is shaping up to be an election of unprecedented ferocity and division.

Sean Hannity as the Democratic convention was in full swing, Trump repeated his claim that increased mail-in voting — which Democrats say is needed due to coronavirus fears — will lead to fraud.

“They’re trying to steal the election,” said Trump, who has pointedly refused to confirm that he will accept the result if he loses.

Earlier, Trump also tried to overshadow Biden’s thunder with a visit just outside his challenger’s birthplace in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

In a dark speech, Trump falsely claimed that Biden had abandoned the blue collar town — he in fact moved out with his family when he was a child — and warned that Democrats would usher in an era of “violent mobs” and “blood-stained sidewalks.”

Pennsylvania is exactly the kind of place that used to be reliably Democratic but is now divided, with many seduced by Trump’s economic nationalism and vows to defend traditional white, working class values.

The state will be fiercely contested on November 3.

Unified Democrats

Trump’s shock win in 2016 over Hillary Clinton was partly helped by divisions within the Democrats. This time, the party is doing everything to emphasise unity, with many of Biden´s primary rivals appearing in a friendly joint video call during the convention.

One by one, guests ranging from comedian Julia Louis-Dreyfus to Democratic heavy hitters came out to rip Trump, while praising Biden´s ability to connect with people who are suffering at a time when the country is going through twin health and economic crises.

“Joe Biden cares,” said a 13-year-old boy, who movingly recounted to the convention how he overcame stuttering thanks to encouragement from lifelong stutterer Biden.

If that was the most raw, emotionally wrenching moment, former New York mayor and billionaire entrepreneur Mike Bloomberg landed one of the sharpest punches against the Democrats’ nemesis Trump.

“Would you rehire or work for someone who ran your business into the ground?” Bloomberg asked, addressing small business owners around the country.

Senator Tammy Duckworth, a badly wounded Iraq war veteran, branded Trump the “coward in chief” who lets “tyrants manipulate him like a puppet.”

That was a point Biden then echoed, saying that under his administration the days of the United States “cozying up to dictators” is over.
