It poured $103.6m during the first quarter of FY21 in comparison to $55.4m last fiscal year. Meanwhile, Hong Kong also increased FDI to $38.4m during the first quarter compared to just $6.9m in the same period last fiscal year.

The data mentioned above has been released by State Bank of Pakistan (SBP). China’s FDI is proving as a breather for Pakistan as except China the rest of FDI’s outlook has presented a bleak outlook.

As per SBP’s recent data, Foreign direct investment (FDI) into the Pakistan dropped 50.7 per cent year-on-year in September to $189 million against $383.5m last year. The flight of FDI from United States fell to $18.9m compared to $26.5m in the previous fiscal.

Chinese inflow as FDI in Pakistan has become a sign of booster for Pakistan economy. Over the last 9 years consecutively, China has been securing as biggest source country pumping up investment in Pakistan.

Cumulatively in the first half (Jul-Dec) of the fiscal year 2019-2020, China invested a net $422.5 million compared to $217.1 million in the same period of 2018-2019.

During 2013 to 2018, Pakistan received US $11.96 billion worth of net Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).

Year wise data manifested that during 2012-13, net inflow of FDI was posted at US $1.456 billion, while during 2013-14, the net FDI was registered at $1.699 billion, and in 2014-15, the total FDI stood at $987 million. Similarly $2.3 billion worth of FDI flowed to Pakistan during 2015-16, $2.746 billion in 2016-17 and $2.767 billion in 2017-18.

According to data issued by State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), China emerged as highest investor with $4.966 billion during the period followed by UK, which made FDI of $1.6 billion.

Another attraction was financial business (banks) which received $102.5m in the first quarter compared to $30.7m in the same period of last fiscal.

Fahad Zubair, an economist said that FDI was separate from the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor investments. As much as 22 CPEC projects worth nearly $28 billion have been actualized.

He said that some Western investors appeared reluctant be cause of the misperception that Chinese companies would be beneficiary of “exclusive advantages” and concessions that would not allow for an even playing field.

“A perception has been cultivated that the Chinese are taking over. The fact of the matter is that this is not true,” he added.

He clarified “Pakistan’s government has no ambiguity about it: It welcomes investors of all hues to come in and participate in building this economy – whether American, English or Japanese.”

PIA flights to resume to England from October 30

KARACHI, Oct 17 (DNA): Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) will resume
its operation to England with new European aircrafts and crew from
October 30.

In the first phase, flights will be operated from Islamabad and Lahore
to London and Islamabad to Manchester.

“The flights will operate directly with new aircraft, comfortable seats,
halal food and the world’s best in-flight entertainment,” PIA
spokesperson.

“Hopefully our guests will be better than any of the best airlines or we
will choose the national airline for the best service,” the source
added.

The spokesperson further said that PIA has started booking tickets for
the flights.

European Union Air Safety Agency had suspended the authorisation for PIA
to operate in Europe for six months.

The airline came under scrutiny after several problems within the group
were uncovered recently, including the issuance of fake licenses to
pilots.

PIA is resuming operations to maintain its slots at England airports in
spite of the fact that it increases the cost of operation. If the
airline doesn’t start operations with foreign crew and aircrafts, they
may lose their slots. DNA

Nawaz Sharif’s statement an attack on judiciary: Farogh Naseem

KARACHI, Oct 17 (DNA): Federal Law Minister Farogh Naseem has said that
all the statements of former Prime Minister and Pakistan Muslim
League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif were an attack on
the judiciary and will not be tolerated.

Addressing the 5th National Judicial Conference in Karachi, the Federal
Law Minister said that there was unwarranted criticism against the
judiciary in Pakistan. He said that only someone who does not know will
criticize judiciary or he will deliberately say such things.

Addressing the function, he said that Pakistan s institutions are our
red line, everyone must respect the red line, and the situation in
Pakistan has reached this point due to corrupt political leadership.

Farogh Naseem further said that there was no life in any statement of
the opposition. Not everything needs to be controversial.

Yesterday someone said the Panama case was a conspiracy. Did the Prime
Minister or the military leadership said to buy Avenfield apartments, he
added.

The federal law minister said that we have no agenda to file a case
against anyone. We don t have fake accounts. Whatever the charge, the
money trail will end it.

He said that one of the main agendas of the federal government is the
rule of law and the country s constitutional institutions are our honor.=DNA

People of Pakistan remained most neglected party in past 73 years: Sirajul Haq

LAHORE, Oct 17 (DNA): People of Pakistan remained the most neglected
party in past 73 years under so-called democratic set-up and military
dictatorships, says the Jamaat-e-Islami Emir Senator Sirajul Haq.

Addressing the JI workers at Mansoora on Saturday, he said masses were
no more ready to bear the corrupt elites who did nothing for the public
welfare but looted the country’s resources during their turns in power.
“Change of faces is no more solution to the problems of Pakistan. There
is need to introduce structural reforms and change of entire system.”

To achieve the purpose, he said, the people should take stand for their
rights and vote for the honest and dedicated leadership to power.

The Senator said that PTI made tall claims to change the destiny of the
people, bring back looted money from abroad, end poverty and build the
economy.

Yet, he added, the present regime failed to take a single step in past
two years in right direction, leaving the masses in a desperate
situation. Thousands became jobless and princes of the basic commodities
touched the skies due to bad economic policies of the government, he
said, adding a tinted and political motivated accountability drive
further destroyed the rulers’ image in the eyes of the public and even
the PTI’s own supporters. The economy was in control of the IMF and
World Bank, foreign policy was stagnant and Islamabad failed to fight
for the Kashmir cause, he said.

It had been proved, he said, that the present government was incapable
and lacked capacity to put the country on right track. People, he said,
had already tested the other parties and reached to the conclusion that
the ruling elite were not interested in public welfare. In the overall
situation, he said, the JI was the only option left with the people. He
vowed that the JI would transform the country into real Islamic welfare
state if voted to power. DNA

Pakistan enjoys stable, mature relationship with Canada: Raza Bashir Tarar

OTTAWA, OCT 17 – High Commissioner for Pakistan to Canada Raza Bashir Tarar has said that Pakistan enjoys a mature, ongoing and satisfactory relationship with Canada.

“Our relationship has much substance in it and it is free of any irritants which gives us room and opportunities to further develop this relationship, particularly in bilateral trade and investment,” he said in an interview with a local TV channel here.

He said there was a realisation in both Pakistan and Canada to expand their relationship further. He said Canada was an important country for Pakistan and the prime ministers of Pakistan and Canada, both popular leaders in their respective countries, had had telephonic conversations in recent months and high-level contacts had also been established between both the countries to further this relationship in coming days.

He said Pakistan under the leadership of Prime Minister Imran Khan had been progressing and getting more recognition and respect globally and the recent re-election of Pakistan to the United Nations Human Rights Council by a maximum margin of votes through uniform support by all regions, including some important and influential countries, was an indication and manifestation of the international community’s confidence and trust in Pakistan’s commitment to progressive national and global human rights. “This election also vindicates our stance on Kashmir,” he said, adding the human rights violations in occupied Kashmir were an issue of global concern and Pakistan would keep highlighting the plight of Kashmiris suffering under the Indian yoke.

He also used the interview to welcome the Canadian businessmen and the Pakistani diaspora to invest and explore business opportunities in Pakistan which he said was open for business and the recent Ease of Doing of Business Report by the World Bank in which Pakistan was now ranked at 108 as compared to 147 two years ago, was reflection of the strength of favourable business climate in Pakistan. “The Mission is ready to provide any facilitation to the Canadian businessmen, particularly the Pakistani entrepreneurs and businessmen, to help them explore business collaborations in fields such as infrastructure, manufacturing, housing, oil and gas, education and energy in Pakistan,” he said.

Speaking about media reports of problems faced by Pakistani students applying for Canada visas, the High Commissioner said that it was the sovereign right of any country to decide who they want to admit to the country. However, he said the difficulties faced by the Pakistani students, particularly a higher rejection rate of their applications, had been taken up with the Canadian authorities and he had briefed forums such as Pakistan Canada Parliamentary Group and also proposed shifting of Canadian visa processing centre from Abu Dhabi to Pakistan. He said Islamabad had been declared a family station by the UN due to much improved security and the US, UK and other Missions were also enhancing their strength.

The High Commissioner also advised the Pakistani students to fill out their visa applications carefully and accurately by providing verifiable information about their means of income and other details. He said the Canadian government and the universities welcomed the international students and most of the Pakistani diaspora in Canada had also benefited from the education system in Canada and now playing an important role in the development of both Canada and Pakistan.

Rashid Latif recommends interesting options for PCB chief selector job

Former Pakistan captain and wicketkeeper Rashid Latif sees no problems in hiring female cricketers as the chief selector of the men’s national team.

Misbah-ul-Haq has stepped down as the chairman of the team’s selection committee to focus on his head coach position.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is yet to announce his replacement.

The 52-year-old, in a conversation with sports journalist Dr Nauman Niaz on YouTube, believes that hiring former female players will not cause any problems.

“The PCB promoted a lot of females on the commentary panel for the ongoing National T20 Cup matches,” he said. “In this way, Bismah Maroof or Urooj Mumtaz can be appointed as the chairperson of the selection committee of the men’s national team. It won’t create any problems.”

Latif, who represented Pakistan in 203 matches, also questioned the PCB constitution as to why it allows the appointment of a chairman instead of a chairperson.

“Everyone must be thinking that a male player will be roped in for the job. Why is it like a chairman is elected in place of a chairperson of the selection committee? Those who are involved in formulating the PCB constitution should take this into consideration.”

Thousands of children in Azerbaijan suffer from constant aggression of Armenia

BAKU, OCT 17 – “It is almost three decades that hundreds of thousands of children in Azerbaijan suffer from the ongoing aggression of Armenia and its long lasting effects,” Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement condemning the grave violations committed by Armenia against the children in Azerbaijan.

“During this period, Armenia ignoring moral imperatives and legal responsibilities, deprived the Azerbaijani children of their inherent rights defined in the international documents, as well as their right to be brought up in the spirit of the ideals proclaimed in the Charter of the United Nations, and in particular in the spirit of peace, dignity, equality and solidarity as described in the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The protection guaranteed for children by the IV Geneva Convention relative to the protection of civilians and I Additional Protocol, in particular the right to life, prohibition of corporal punishment, torture, collective punishment and reprisals, and the rules defined in these documents on the conduct of hostilities, such as the necessity of distinction between civilians and combatants and prohibition of attacks against civilians have been constantly infringed by Armenia. Armenia has also clearly ignored its obligations deriving from the principle of special protection for children laid down in I Additional Protocol which provides that “children shall be the object of special respect and shall be protected against any form of indecent assault.

Armenia has been using acts of genocide as a means to instill fear and to terrorize the entire population and force them to flee. Only in Khojaly massacre 613 civilians of whom 63 were children were brutally killed and many were maimed by the armed forces of Armenia in 1992.

1 million Azerbaijanis, one thirds of whom are children were forcefully expelled and driven away from their homes in contrary to Article 49 of IV Geneva Convention. For almost 15 years the larger part of the forcefully displaced children in Azerbaijan had to live in tent camps and villages consisting of luggage vans on railways which were subsequently abolished as a result of the tremendous efforts and budget resources allocated by the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The internally displaced children in Azerbaijan still cannot realize their right to voluntary return to their lands in safety and dignity despite the provisions of relevant documents, including the UN Security Council resolutions 822, 853, 874 and 884 adopted in 1993.

In contrary to the Article 50 of the IV Geneva Convention which provides that the occupying power shall facilitate the proper working of all institutions devoted to the care and education of children, the ongoing armed aggression of Armenia against the Republic of Azerbaijan has inflicted serious damage upon the infrastructure for children in Azerbaijan. Armenia which presents itself as one of the “advocates” of the Safe Schools Declaration is responsible for total destruction of 1107 educational facilities and 855 kindergartens in the occupied territories of the Republic of Azerbaijan. As a result of the ethnic cleansing policy, all Azerbaijani schoolchildren and students have been expelled from their native lands. Tens of thousands of Azerbaijani children continue to realize their right to education under serious challenges stemming from their continued displacement. Many others along the line of confrontation attend their classes under the constant threat of being attacked by the indiscriminate bombing of the armed forces of Armenia.

Despite the fact that taking of hostages is clearly prohibited by the Article 34 of the IV Geneva Convention and in violation of Article 38 (1) and (4) of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, 224 children were taken hostage by Armenia and were subsequently released, and 29 children are still considered to be in Armenian captivity. 71 children are still missing as a result of Armenia’s aggression.

Even during the cease-fire regime, Armenia hasn’t refrained from such despicable activities as using children as targets. More than 35 Azerbaijani children were killed by the armed forces of Armenia during this period.

On September 27, 2020 the armed forces of Armenia have launched another aggression against Azerbaijan. As a result, 47 Azerbaijani civilians, including 3 children were killed, more than 15 children were injured, and dozens of civilian objects, including 38 schools were destroyed. On September 27, five members of one family in Gashalti village of Naftalan region of Azerbaijan, including two schoolchildren, 13 years old Shahriyar Gurbanov and 14 years old Fidan Gurbanova, were killed by the armed forces of Armenia. Armenia’s attacks seriously damaged the education process in hundreds of schools near the conflict zone and border with Armenia and once again infringed the right to education of Azerbaijani children. On the night of October 11, 10 civilians were killed and 34, including minors, were seriously injured as a result of rocket fire on residential buildings in Ganja city situated far beyond the frontline. 3 children lost their both parents.

Despite numerous warnings by the Azerbaijani side, the continuation of the targeted attacks on civilians, as well as children by the armed forces of Armenia is a clear demonstration of the racist and xenophobic policy of this state. By killing and maiming children, as well as attacking against schools and hospitals Armenia continues to commit grave violations against children in times of armed conflict identified in Resolution 1261 (1999) of the United Nations Security Council,” the statement said.

“Children represent the future. If the international community fails today its universal moral obligation to protect the future generation and provide them with safe haven, ignoring the decades-lasting plight and suffering of the whole generation, and failing to secure justice and rule of law which sow the seeds for conflicts to continue. In this regard, we call the international community, especially the relevant international organizations to react publicly to the deliberate targeting by Armenia of children and educational facilities in the Republic of Azerbaijan and take effective actions to stop the climate of impunity lasting for three decades. We also urge the international community to refrain from the actions, such as rendering political, financial and especially military support to Armenia which contributes to the grave violations committed by this country against the children in the Republic of Azerbaijan,” the statement concluded.

Pakistan slams Armenian prime minister statement

DNA

ISLAMABAD, OCT 17 – Pakistan has categorically rejected the baseless and unwarranted comments by the Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan that Pakistan’s armed forces fought along with the Azerbaijani army in the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

We have seen the transcript of Armenian Prime Minister’s interview on 15 October with a Russian TV referring to some unsubstantiated reports alleging involvement of Pakistani special forces alongside Azerbaijani army in the ongoing conflict.

It is regrettable that leadership of Armenia, to cover up its illegal actions against Azerbaijan, is resorting to irresponsible propaganda, which it must stop.

For our part, we wish to make clear that Pakistan has consistently extended diplomatic, moral and political support to Azerbaijan. Pakistan will continue to stand by the brotherly nation of Azerbaijan and support its right of self-defence against any aggression.

We believe that long-term peace and normalization of relations between the two parties would depend on the complete and comprehensive implementation of the UN Security Council resolutions and withdrawal of Armenian forces from Azerbaijani territories. DNA
