Pakistan rejects tendentious comments of Indian External Affairs Minister

Responding to media queries regarding the Indian External Affairs Minister (EAM)’s comments made at a recent online think-tank event, the Spokesperson said:

We completely reject these unwarranted and tendentious comments, blaming Pakistan for the current state of India-Pakistan relations.

Rather than reflect on its own egregious behaviour marked by illegal and unilateral actions in IIOJK, gross and systematic violations of human rights of unarmed and innocent Kashmiris, unabashed anti-minority policies and actions, incessantly bellicose statements against Pakistan, and aggressive steps in the shape of intensified violations of ceasefire along the Line of Control, India resorts to fabrications and baseless allegations against Pakistan. Clearly, an acknowledged perpetrator of state-terrorism cannot masquerade as a ‘victim’ of terrorism.

Portrayal of innocent Kashmiri youth, women and children, martyred in fake “encounters” and “cordon-and-search” operations, as terrorists to divert the world’s attention from the unacceptable actions of Indian occupation forces in IIOJK is a travesty, reflective of the moral bankruptcy of the Indian leadership.

The so-called preachers of trade and connectivity should also tell the world as to who is blocking regional cooperation and the SAARC process, with its next Summit pending since 2016. Indian sophistry and obfuscation can neither hide hard facts, nor succeed in misleading the world community.

It is the RSS-BJP regime’s dangerous policies of ‘Hindutva’ and ‘Akhand Bharat’ that continue to victimize the Kashmiris in IIOJK and squeeze the space for the minorities in India on the one hand, and create problems with nearly all of India’s neighbours on the other hand. Obviously, ‘normal’ relations with its neighbours remain contingent upon India beginning to act normally.

Uzbek President holds meeting on ensuring stable food prices considered

Tashkent — President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev has chaired a videoconference on measures to ensure food security and price stability in the domestic market.

The availability and sufficiency of food security are the main factors of social stability. To this end, over the past three years, 28 trillion UZS of loans have been allocated for the development of food industry, animal husbandry, horticulture and agriculture. In the livestock industry alone, projects worth 11 trillion soums have been implemented.

In addition, taking into account the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on price dynamics, imports of basic foodstuffs have been exempted from customs duties since April this year.

Despite this, the prices of meat, eggs, vegetable oil and sugar have risen sharply recently. If in the world market prices for vegetable oil over the past 9 months increased by an average of 15 percent, in Uzbekistan the growth amounted to 26 percent. In the world, sugar fell in price by 5 percent, in Uzbekistan it went up by 23 percent.

At the meeting, the issues of saturating the domestic market with food products and maintaining price stability were comprehensively discussed.

“If we will not take necessary measures today and change the current system, tomorrow – in winter and spring – the situation will become more complicated. People, especially low-income citizens, will be happy if we increase the supply of food and stabilize prices in the market”, said Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

It was emphasized that each khokim of the region, district and city must have accurate estimates of the needs of the population for meat, eggs, flour, oil, sugar, rice, potatoes, carrots and onions, sources of supply of these products for the period until May next year.

Food security funds will be established in each region. At the expense of the fund, regional leaders, with the involvement of entrepreneurs, will arrange the import of basic types of food from other regions or foreign countries to those regions where there is a shortage of products. Entrepreneurs participating in such supplies will receive compensation for interest on the loan from the Entrepreneurship Support Fund.

The need was noted for expanding the participation of large foreign manufacturers in local exchange trading in order to reduce the cost of imported food products.

The importance of securing the regions for each district of the city of Tashkent for organizing sale centers of agricultural products was noted.

It was emphasized that khokims of regions, districts, cities and sector leaders should report to the population on the food supply system created on their territory, conditions and prices in the market.

At the event, khokims of the regions reported on their plans for uninterrupted provision of the population with food products by months.

CRTI opposes efforts to weaken federal right of access to information act, 2017

ISLAMABAD, OCT 17 (DNA) – The Coalition on Right to Information (CRTI) strongly opposes the Right of Access to Information (Amendment) Bill, 2020, which has been moved as a private member bill in the Senate of Pakistan.

The said amendment bill, if enacted by the Parliament, will limit the scope of the right to information law by excluding Parliament from the definition of public bodies, which are bound to provide information to citizens. CRTI condemns this move for being malafide, unconstitutional, and against the interests of the people of Pakistan.

Commenting on the move, Mr. Mukhtar Ahmad, Executive Director of CPDI, said that the proposed amendment to Section 2 (ix) will not only weaken the Act but also the fledgling democracy in Pakistan. He went on to say that it is a shame that, instead of working to establish the reputation of the Parliament as the most transparent institution, some senators wish to exclude it from the scope of RTI, which is a pre-requisite for transparent governance and public accountability.

He described the move as discriminatory and in violation of Article 19A of the Constitution, which clearly states that only ‘reasonable restrictions’ can be imposed by law on citizens’ right to information. He further said Parliament represents people and, therefore, it must be open in its functions and accountable to citizens, who should be able to ask questions and seek information.

Mr. Aftab Alam, ED of Institute for Research, Advocacy and Development (IRADA), while strongly opposing the amendment, said that “removing Parliament from the ambit of RTI is sheer subversion of people’s right to information. Any attempt to dilute the citizens’ right to information is tantamount to curbing the undiluted fundamental right to information as enshrined in Article 19-A of the Constitution of Pakistan.”

Ms. Gulmina Bilal, Director Individual land said, “The proposed amendment needs to be strongly re-thought as it is deemed to be against the very spirit of transparency and ensuring public oversight of financial resources, authority and public trust. “

Mr. Muhammad Anwar, Executive Director of Centre for Governance and Public Accountability (CGPA) CGPA said, “the very basis for exempting the parliament from the ambit of RTI is flawed. The sanctity of the parliament improves, not diminishes, with more openness and transparency. Citizens must know about the working and performance of the Parliamentarians. Such information is critical for citizens to decide whom to vote in general elections. By depriving citizens from such constitutional rights, the parliament is striking on the very roots of democracy”.

Mr. Adnan Rehmat, ED of Civic Action Resources, remarked that “the amendment is unacceptable since the public pays for the parliament’s upkeep. If the representatives of common people cannot deem themselves accountable than they don’t deserve our votes and taxes.”

CRTI rejects the restrictive Right of Access to Information (amendment) bill, 2020, and endorses that the amendments shall only entail the spirit of democracy and maximum public access to the information held by government departments. In continuation, CRTI Partners will also conduct a press conference on 19 October, Monday | 12:00pm in National Press Club Islamabad.=DNA

Jacinda Ardern wins second term as New Zealand Prime Minister after election landslide

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has won a second term in office after National Party leader Judith Collins conceded defeat. The early result comes after the vote count indicated the incumbent leader was set for a landslide win.“

”Our plan is already in action and already working, but after this result we have the mandate to accelerate our response and our recovery, and tomorrow we start,” Ms Ardern said in her victory speech.”“Now more than ever is the time to keep going, to keep working, to grab hold of the opportunities that lay in front of us.

”She acknowledged that the next few years might not be easy for the country, but that they would get through it.“That light has always been more powerful than the most overwhelming darkness,” she said.It remains to be seen whether Ms Ardern has the support to govern as a single-party government, which New Zealand has not had for 24 years.Ms Collins did not surrender the National leadership, assuring the party instead that the 2023 campaign began now.“We will hold the Government to account for failed promises and we will push, on behalf of all New Zealanders, the Government to do better for Kiwis,” she said.

It remains to be seen whether Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters’ NZ First party will remain in government.More than two million people – half of the registered voters in the country – voted early.Ahead of the vote, Ms Ardern polled well ahead of Ms Collins.New Zealanders are also poised to decide on two landmark social issues: whether to legalise recreational marijuana and whether to legalise euthanasia.

A “yes” vote on both referendums would arguably make the nation of five million one of the more liberal countries in the world. Polls indicate the euthanasia referendum is likely to pass while the result of the marijuana measure remains uncertain.

203th birth anniversary of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan

October 17, 1817 marks the birth of the renowned Islamic reformer, educationist, and philosopher, Syed Ahmed Taqvi bin Syed Muhammad Muttaqi, in Delhi, known to the Muslims of the subcontinent as Sir Syed Ahmed Khan.

After having witnessed the fall of the Mughal Empire, and catastrophic events of 1857 which resulted in the moral, social and economic decline of the Muslims of India, Sir Syed Ahmed Khan wrote his famous treatise “The Causes of the Indian Revolt” or “اسباب بغاوت ہند”.

“Do not show the face of Islam to others; instead show your face as the follower of true Islam representing character, knowledge, tolerance and piety.” — Sir Syed Ahmed Khan

In 1875, Sir Syed Ahmed Khan founded the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College at Aligarh, the first Muslim University of South Asia.

Sir Syed advocated Muslims to use knowledge as power to reclaim their rightful social and economic place in India.

Maulana Altaf Hali, in his biography of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan writes: “As soon as Sir Syed reached Muradabad, he began to write the pamphlet entitled ‘The Causes of the Indian Revolt’ (Asbab-e-Baghawat-e-Hind), in which he did his best to clear the people of India and especially the Muslims, of the charge of Mutiny. In spite of the obvious danger, he made a courageous and thorough report of the accusations people were making against the Government and refused the theory which the British had invented to explain the causes of the Mutiny.”

As a social reformer, educationist, author and Muslim revivalist, Sir Syed wrote innumerable journals, articles, translations, books and treatise to awaken the Muslims of India.

He advocated the use of Urdu, founded scientific societies and set upon establishing a “Muslim Cambridge” in India on the lines of the Oxford and Cambridge Universities in England.

As a visionary, Sir Syed knew that unless the Muslims became socially and economically secure they would fall subservient to the overwhelming majority of Hindus once the British exited.

He said: “Suppose that the English community and the army were to leave India taking with them all their cannons and their splendid weapons and all else, who then would be the rulers of India? Is it possible that under these circumstances two nations—the Mohammedans and the Hindus—could sit on the same throne and remain equal in power? Most certainly not. It is necessary that one of them should conquer the other. To hope that both could remain equal is to desire the impossible and the inconceivable.”

Sir Syed was farsighted & pragmatic enough to understand that in an undivided India, the majority would reign over the minority.

The MAO College was given the status of a University, in 1920, and became the hub of modernizing the Muslims of India, and its students became the hall-bearers of the demand of a separate homeland for Muslims of India: Pakistan.

The Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah called Aligarh “the arsenal of Muslim India” and AMU students were the forefront in the all-important elections of 1946, when the Muslim League swept the elections to make Pakistan a reality.

The Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah was a lifelong contributor to Aligarh Muslim University, where his portrait hangs even to this day.

Sir Syed Ahmed Khan played a pivotal role in awakening the Muslims of India, and in his stride, set the foundations for a Muslim revival, that helped shape the future course of history by providing Muslims the leadership for a demand of an Independent Nation-State.

Govt LNG decision in the national interest

Chairman of Pakistan Economy Watch Brig. (retd) Aslam Khan on Saturday lauded the move of the government to promote the use of LNG in vehicles in place of CNG.

As per the plan, conversion of CNG stations to RLNG is in progress and the CNG stations will not get natural gas in future and they will use imported LNG which will bring an end to the scarcity of gas for vehicles during the winter, he said.

He said that the move of the government will reduce the oil import bill by almost 20 percent, reduce environmental pollution and fares for the masses.

Aslam Khan said that the imported LNG will be around 20 to 25 percent cheaper than petrol which will provide relief to millions of people linked to the transport sector and commuters.

This will also help the government to utilise the idle capacity of LNG terminals which is resulting in heavy losses. This will bring down the terminal charges on a unit basis while the private sector will start building new terminals by investing billions.

A sizable volume of local gas will be saved through this initiative which could be diverted to industrial sector reducing complaints and triggering production and employment.

He noted that RLNG usage should be encouraged throughout the year and the natural gas could be used for more efficient uses in the industrial and power sectors.
