Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia working group meets

MOSCOW, JAN 31: The trilateral working group of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia on Nagorno-Karabakh held its first meeting in Moscow on Saturday.

The meeting was co-chaired by deputy prime ministers of the three countries, according to a statement by the Russian government.

“The parties agreed to establish the expert subgroups related to railway, automobile and intermodal transport; transportation, including security, border, sanitary, veterinary, phytosanitary, and other types of control,” the statement noted.

The expert groups will be established by Feb. 2 and they will hold their first meetings by Feb. 5.

The trilateral working group was scheduled to convene its next meeting in Moscow, with the date to be set by the co-chairs in due course.

What happened in Karabakh?

Relations between the former Soviet republics had been tense since 1991, when the Armenian military occupied Nagorno-Karabakh, internationally recognized as an Azerbaijani territory, and seven adjacent regions.

When new clashes erupted on Sept. 27, 2020, the Armenian army launched attacks on civilians and Azerbaijani forces and even violated humanitarian cease-fire agreements.

During the six-week-long conflict, Azerbaijan liberated several cities and nearly 300 settlements and villages, while at least 2,802 of its soldiers were martyred. There are differing claims about the number of casualties on the Armenian side, which, sources and officials say, could be up to 5,000.

The two countries signed a Russian-brokered agreement on Nov. 10, 2020 to end the fighting and work towards a comprehensive resolution.

A joint Turkish-Russian center became operational on Saturday to monitor the truce. 60 Russian and 60 Turkish troops are on duty.

On Jan. 11, the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia signed a pact to develop economic ties and infrastructure to benefit the entire region. It included the establishment of a trilateral working group on Karabakh.

The cease-fire is seen as a victory for Azerbaijan and a defeat for Armenia, whose armed forces have withdrawn in line with the agreement.

Violations, however, have been reported in the past few weeks, with some Armenian soldiers said to have been hiding in the mountainous enclave.

Azerbaijan marks founder’s 137th birth anniversary

Mammad Amin Resulzadeh strived for Azerbaijan’s independence, people’s rights throughout his life

BAKU, JAN 31 – Mammad Amin Resulzadeh, the founder of Azerbaijan, one of the first democratic republics in the Muslim world, is being commemorated on his 137th birth anniversary.

Having played a significant role in the formation of the modern Azerbaijani national identity, Resulzadeh struggled for his country’s independence, people’s rights and enlightenment of the society through his press and political activities.

Besides Azerbaijan, he is also remembered in Turkey where he spent some years of his life.

Resulzadeh’s expression “Once raised, the flag never falls!” became the motto of the independence movement in Azerbaijan in the 20th century.

Early life

The first and only president of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was born in Novhani village, Baku in 1884. He studied at the Russian-Muslim Secondary School and then at the Baku Technical College.

Interested in politics since an early age, he struggled against Russia’s Tsarist regime politically, and also wrote in various newspapers and magazines.

In 1909, he fled to Iran due to persecution, began publishing ‘Iran-e Now’ (New Iran), a daily newspaper, and became one of the founders of the Democratic Party of Iran.

Following the Russian troops’ invasion of Iran, Resulzadeh came to Istanbul, the then capital of the Ottoman Empire.

In 1913, he went back to Baku and became a member of the Musavat (Equality) Party. He was elected as its chairman four years later.

He was unanimously elected as the head of the Azerbaijani National Council, a legislative body, in 1918.

Azerbaijan Republic

On May 28, 1918, the Azerbaijani National Council, headed by Rasulzadeh, declared the independent Azerbaijan Democratic Republic.

The same year, the Ottomans and the newly formed Azerbaijan signed an agreement of friendship and cooperation.

When the Republic collapsed in 1920, Resulzadeh left Baku and directed resistance against Soviet Russia from the village of Lahij. The rebellion was crushed by the Soviet Russian army.

Resulzadeh was arrested and brought to Moscow. Although Joseph Stalin wanted him to collaborate with Soviet Russia, he refused the offer.

He then went on to live in different countries including France, Finland, Poland and Germany, and wrote against the Soviets for the world to know that Azerbaijan was under occupation.

Becomes Turkish citizen

In 1947, Resulzadeh settled in Turkey. He became a Turkish citizen under a Cabinet decree, and established the Azerbaijan Culture Association in 1949 in Ankara, which is still active.

He continued to write books, and held talks to convey the situation in Azerbaijan to the world.

He died on March 6, 1955 in Ankara, and was buried at the Cebeci Asri Cemetery in the Turkish capital.

Fitrat: A gripping story that ended on a high!

DNA

Islamabad: – Popular and much-watched drama serial ‘Fitrat’ bid adieu to its viewers last night, bringing an end to an intriguing journey. Produced by the ace producers Abdullah Kadwani and Asad Qureshi, penned down by Nuzhat Saman, and directed by Asad Jabbal, the story revolving around a materialistic girl had us addicted since the past three months. Starring Saboor Aly, Zubab Rana, Mirza Zain Baig, and Ali Abbas in the lead roles, Fitrat led TRP charts week after week and drew praises from all corners.

The plot of ‘Fitrat’ mainly revolved around Fariya (Saboor Aly), a materialistic and selfish girl, who never valued the loving relationships she had and made in life. Her evil mind looked for every possible chance and shortcuts to make money, while not caring about the consequences of it. For this purpose, she first marries Shahbaz (Ali Abbas), a rich businessman but does not stay sincere to him, so he divorces him. Later, she gets married to Shahbaz’s brother Arbaz (Mirza Zain Baig) and makes the life of both brothers hell.

DNA 31-3

On the other hand, Fairya’s sister Rafia (Zubab Rana) and brother Haris believed in hard work and honesty and climbed the ladder of success by dedicating their energies to their education and hard work. So many events happen during the course of the story that had us invested in the show and made it an interesting drama to tune to every day at 9PM.

While it brought a happy ending for many including Rafia, Arbaz, Alizey, Haris, Maliha, Shahbaz and their family, Fariya and Khalid reaped what they sowed. The audience, however, also wanted to see Bilal punished for what he did, which was something that was missing. Nevertheless, it was a much-awaited end to a drama that had us hooked since its beginning with some commendable performances and interesting storyline.

Like many other serials by Abdullah Kadwani and Asad Qureshi led 7th Sky Entertainment, ‘Fitrat’ also ended on a high, with more than 2.5 million views on YouTube in just 15 hours. The duo producers deserve appreciation for bringing to us such quality entertainment and family dramas. ‘Fitrat’ has added another feather to their cap and from the OST to the acting performances, everything was spot on, and the duo deserves appreciation for outdoing themselves. The new season of dramas by 7th Sky Entertainment also has a promising look so here is hoping that we will continue to be entertained by the duo with these new serials.

Experts urge inclusive and responsible winter sports strategy

Devcom-Pakistan Executive Director Munir Ahmed said we see no baseline study for winter sports or even for summer tourism. Wildlife habitats are disturbed by some influential ones while mountaineering expeditions left their waste in our mountains and no one seems concerned about it.

DNA

Islamabad – Speaking at a webinar the experts urged for an inclusive and integrated winter sports strategy to attract tourism towards northern Pakistan. Environment and climate change shall remain the main concern while devising any sports events for the winter season. It is the hibernation and mating time for wildlife and biodiversity while massive human activities would disturb their lifecycle.

Unplanned massive interventions are becoming hazards to the local environment and communities besides the biological diversity loss. A fistful influential ones are enjoying at the cost of millions of people while the poor communities are not only deprived of their local environment, heritage and natural resources, they are also not getting anything in return.

The experts also showed their concerns on the unwise decisions of the Gilgit-Baltistan government to open Deosai National Park for the winter sports from March this year. They said millions of dollars have been spent on the conservation and protection of the wildlife habitats and biological diversity in the Deosai National Park that are being put on risk. The participants urged the Supreme Court of Pakistan, national and international development organizations to take notice of it.

The webinar was organized by the Development Communications Network (Devcom-Pakistan) and DTN to brainstorm on “Winter Sports – Scope, Opportunities and Challenges” on Sunday. The panelists included National Tourism Coordination Board (NTCB) member and sustainable tourism expert Aftab ur Rehman Rana, National Tourism Coordination Board convener on adventure sports Shahid Nadeem, WWf-Pakistan Senior Director Wildlife Rab Nawaz, another WWFS-Pakistan Senior Director Tahir Rasheed, EvK2CR Environment Conservation Expert Arif Hussain, Devcom-Pakistan Executive Director Munir Ahmed. Others who spoke on the occasion included RCCI travel and tourism expert Fouzia Qazi, The Adventure Club president Tahir Imran Khan, journalist Zubair Ayub, development experts Umme Kulsoom and Sabeena Hena Iqbal, Baltistan Association of Tour Operators (BATO) chairman Muhammad Iqbal, and Lion Sarfaraz Malik.

Aftab ur Rehman Rana said we have seen mushroom growth of winter sports in recent years without any planning and strategy. No one is really interested in taking care of nature, biodiversity and wildlife. Winter is the rest-time for nature and wildlife that descends from their original habitats but found no space for mating and hibernation downwards. Excessive winter sports are hazardous to nature and an undue pressure on the forest resources. Winter resorts meant for adventure sports are being shut worldwide to reduce pressure on nature and climatic conditions. We are unwisely supporting everything blindly.

WWF-Pakistan Senior Director Rab Nawaz said all activities are being conducted in isolation and without considering environmental concerns and hazards to nature and wildlife. Government should take the lead in developing an inclusive and integrated approach toward conducting winter and adventure sports. Environmental organizations are not against anything but everything we take up should be sustainable and nature friendly. We talk about communities but exclude them from planning to the implementation. Outdoor activities are healthy for human beings, they should be healthy for the environment too.

Devcom-Pakistan Executive Director Munir Ahmed said communities are getting nothing out of what monetary benefits generated in their names and at the cost of their local resources that are crucial too for the people living downstream. We see no baseline study for the winter sports or even for the summer tourism. International mountaineering expeditions come to scale the peaks and leave their garbage and waste in our mountains and no one seems concerned about it. The highlands too are being spoiled with the constructions in the name of ‘strategic needs’ which are highly toxic for nature and natural resources. The federal and provincial government should promote responsible and sustainable tourism putting a price tag on the environmental services for tourism and adventure sports.

Tahir Rasheed, another senior director WWF Pakistan, said all stakeholders need to sit together to develop an inclusive strategy for winter sports. The site shall be selected keeping in view the wildlife needs of hibernation and mating. Communities should be part of the planning and profit sharing.

EvK2CNR conservation expert Arif Hussain said winter sports have increased in recent years in different parts of northern Pakistan. We need to have a strategy to regularize and integrate the events with the conservation efforts. He said the GB government is interested to explore the possibilities of adventure and winter sports where the EvK2CNR is helping them in Deosai National Park and in other parts. He said they have no resources to continue with the massive cleanup of the high mountains while there is no check on the mountaineering expeditions.

Tahir Imran Khan said there is no winter sports policy or any regulatory body while the adventure enthusiasts lack training, support and infrastructure. Some high-end customers are playing with the natural resources and creating hazards for the locals and the national environment security. Federal government should come up with an inclusive plan. Many are the no-go areas and the adventure enthusiasts have to get NOC for which they have to wait for months.
