Lifelong learning

By Muhammad Omar Iftikhar

Learning must continue every day. Students should learn some skills after they graduate, employees must learn a new job after they are promoted. Learning is an unceasing, interminable, incessant process that happens at our conscious and subconscious level. It is this learning and the quest to gain knowledge that lets us conduct research. Students need to become lifelong learners. They should read books other than their textbooks to absorb information to help them win the race of life. Acquiring grades is important to complete their degree program, but gaining knowledge is significant to make them well-informed. In today’s age of digital media, information is present at our fingertips. We need to know the direction where we are going and the information follows. Professionals including teachers, businessmen, bankers, architects, pilots, doctors, and those from the industries of automobile, manufacturing, construction, technology, services sector among others need to be at par with the information about their respective industries. The concept to abandon learning once a life goal is achieved makes a human mind rusty. A student completing his intermediate education must think about completing Masters’s, Ph.D., before proceeding to add value to his industry by conducting more research. Pakistan is blessed with talented human resources. The challenge is to motivate the youth and the adults to continue with their pursuit of learning. This learning comes in many forms including reading, researching, teaching, conversing, writing, exploring, observing, among others. We must inculcate in ourselves the seed to discover the world around us so we may realize the world within. Learning is the ladder that makes our consciousness reach new heights. While this ladder does not have an end, each step brings us closer to a new realization, to a unique thought, to an original theory of life.

Zimbabwe arrests female activists after protest

Harare : Zimbabwean opposition activists and a member of parliament have been arrested for using abusive and obscene language against police officers.

Police said the trio was arrested on Monday after holding a demonstration outside a government building in the capital, Harare.

It is unclear what the demonstration was about.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Joanna Mamombe [MP], Netsai Marova and Cecilia Chimbiri in Harare after a flash demonstration outside the New Government Complex.

“The trio who were in a Toyota Fortuner without number plates followed a police vehicle with officers who had attended the scene and used abusive language on the officers thus leading to their arrest,” a statement from the police said.

The three, all members of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party, were in June last year arrested for lying about being tortured in custody.

They alleged state agents abducted them from the police, beat and sexually assaulted them and forced them to drink each other’s urine.

Police denied the accusations, but UN experts called for the prosecution of “the perpetrators of this outrageous crime”.

The MDC has tweeted that the latest arrest was an escalation of the government’s “war of attrition against opposition activists”.

It said the trio was initially detained at Harare Central Police Station.

Chinese enterprises to support Pakistan, optimizing its textile potential

ISLAMABAD, 02 Feb 2021 : Optimistic about the huge advantages of Pakistan’s textile industry, Challenge Fashion (Pvt) Ltd. has bought 80 acres of land in Lahore and is currently applying for the qualification of the Special Economic Zone, to fully enjoy the policy support of the local government and the preferential dividend of cross-regional market tax rates.

According to Gwadar Pro, the company plans to invest USD 150 million in three phases to build a 100-ton fabric production park, which will start construction in mid-2021. 25 tons of fabric and garment equipment will be put into production in the second half of 2022, with 6,000 workers to be employed and projected annual sales of USD 80 million.

Karen Chen, CEO of Challenge Fashion, told Gwadar Pro that the establishment of a supply chain cluster will help improve Pakistan’s labor structure and management. “We hope to demonstrate China’s industrial park standards to our Pakistani counterparts by creating a Chinese-regulated industrial park project.

We can enable Chinese enterprises interested in overseas layout to see Pakistan’s investment potential, and also provide project landing sites for SMEs so that they can fully enjoy the preferential investment policies provided by the Pakistani government. ”

Through the early experimental operation of Challenge Apparels, the company gains a deeper understanding of the business environment in Pakistan, which provides a practical basis for additional investment decisions.“Pakistan has significant labor advantage to ensure the sufficient labor supply. Most of the existing textile enterprises have relatively outdated equipment, backward management and products of low efficiency and low added value. Therefore, Chinese-funded enterprises have great development potential in technology and management after investing in Pakistan.”

Karen said that “the tariff-free treatment of textiles exported to the EU, together with China’s Free Trade Agreement, can guarantee the price edge of Pakistani products. Pakistani fabrics exported to Africa or Jordan can enter North America without tariffs, and the route is much shorter than from East Asia.”

Nevertheless, Pakistan’s textile industry still boasts great potential for optimization and upgrading. “The biggest obstacle to industrial investment in Pakistan lies in the location of the project, which is also one of the main reasons why the country is unable to develop industry on a large scale. There has been no mature industrial park system so far. The industrial parks are located in remote areas, which are not suitable for labor-intensive enterprises to carry out business,” Karen further mentioned.

As Pakistan’s pillar industry, the textile industry has helped the country survive the difficult time of 2020 and is still regarded as an important force for strengthening the national economy during the ongoing global pandemic. It has made great contributions to promoting exports, increasing foreign exchange earnings and stabilizing the national economy. Karen said that Challenge Fashion will continue its efforts to promote Pakistan’s textile exports.

Iran’s Zarif hints at way to bridge nuclear deal impasse

WASHINGTON : Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif suggested a way on Monday to overcome the US-Iranian impasse over who goes first in returning to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, saying a top EU official could “synchronize” or “choreograph” the moves.

Zarif’s stance was a shift from his position, expressed in a Jan. 22 article in which he said the United States should remove US sanctions before Iran returned to the deal.“There can be a mechanism to basically either synchronize it or coordinate what can be done,” Zarif told CNN when asked how to bridge the gap.

Each government wants the other to resume compliance first with the agreement, which former US President Donald Trump abandoned in 2018 but which President Joe Biden as said he will rejoin if Iran resumed “strict” compliance.

Under the accord, Iran agreed to limit its nuclear program to make it harder for it to develop nuclear weapons in return for relief from US and other economic sanctions.

Zarif noted the pact created a Joint Commission coordinated by the European Union foreign policy chief, now Josep Borrell. Borrell “can … sort of choreograph the actions” needed from both sides.

The commission includes the EU and the seven parties to the deal: Iran, Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States.

After abandoning the deal, Trump reimposed US sanctions and imposed new US economic penalties on Iran.

Analysts said Zarif’s stance might lay the ground for talks on reviving the deal despite Iran’s prior insistence that the United States lift sanctions first.

Pakistan not diplomatically isolated despite Indian efforts: FM Qureshi

ISLAMABAD : Minister for Foreign Affairs Shah Mehmood Qureshi on Monday said that despite Indian efforts Pakistan is not diplomatically isolated and invited the opposition parties for discussion with the government on the foreign policy issues facing the country.

Speaking at the floor of the Senate here, he said the political parties should pursue a bipartisan approach in foreign affairs in line with the national interest.

The minister said the parties which were in government for multiple times were very much responsible for the present state of foreign affairs and rejected the opposition’s criticism that the country is facing isolation.

Despite attempts of India, Pakistan has the support of the world as became evident from the backing it received at different international forums, he remarked.

In this regard, Qureshi mentioned Pakistan’s election at the UN Human Rights Council, Pakistan’s presidency at the UN Economic and Social Council, and the 7% growth in trade with Africa last year.

In the next stage, the countries of Europe will be engaged to boost mutual economic interests, he conveyed.

Ties with neighbouring, Muslim countries

Shah Mehmood Qureshi recalled that the friendly countries came to the rescue of Pakistan and gave timely financial assistance.

He said Saudi Arabia gave credit facility to Pakistan and as the loan was given for a limited period, the amount was also returned.

He said the United Arab Emirates had categorically stated that its relations with India would not be at the cost of Pakistan.

The foreign minister told that good relations with neighbouring countries were a pillar of the foreign policy of Pakistan.

He said relations of Pakistan and Afghanistan had improved and both countries had signed a document of shared vision, adding the Pakistani government made contacts with all ethnic groups in Afghanistan.

He said he had held talks with Secretary of State of the United States on foreign policy imperatives and shared vision of Pakistan for Afghanistan.

Pakistan had undertaken border fencing and establishment of markets at the borders of Iran and Afghanistan, he explained.

Shah Mehmood Qureshi said Pakistan and China have good ties and have started the second phase of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor aimed at the relocation of industrial units.

‘Pakistan desires peace with India’

He said Pakistan desired peace with India but India was ruled by an extremist government which wanted rule of Hindutva and was not ready for talks.

The government of PTI has forcefully raised the Kashmir issue at different international forums, he continued.

The minister said terrorists were targeting innocent people in Balochistan and the government has irrefutable evidence that India was fomenting trouble in the province.

He said that he had informed the United Nations and the world leaders about the violations of Line of Control (LoC) by the Indian army which was killing the civilian population in Azad Kashmir.

Qureshi said Kashmiris wanted the solution of Kashmir issue according to the United Nations Security Council resolutions.

Pak vs SA: Misbah hints at changes in squad for Rawalpindi Test against South Africa

RAWALPINDI : Pakistani head coach Misbah ul Haq on Tuesday said that if the conditions demanded the team will be bringing in some changes in the squad for the second Test against South Africa.

During a media briefing after a practice session at the Pindi Stadium, the coach said that they would follow the horses-for-courses policy rather than sticking to the same old mythology of retaining the winning squad.

Best team to bat against Proteas

“We would make sure that the best team is fielded against South Africa for the second Test. Though it is too early to say anything on the final combination, we would not be afraid of making any changes in the team if some need arises.”

Acknowledging that the conditions will be different while playing at the Pindi Stadium, Misbah said: “No doubt Pindi and Karachi stadiums have different conditions. We are monitoring the situation and will decide on the final combination once we inspect the final shape of the playing surface.”

Misbah added that team’s management would not hesitate to drop a bowler (spinner) who would be of no use in these conditions.

Pitch conditions

Touching upon the pitch conditions, Misbah hoped that dry conditions would help the curators get the wicket suitable for the hosts.

“We have had some fine dry spells here. Hopefully, things would turn up to our liking.”

“Any bowler who would be of no use on this pitch could be dropped for a better option. What we want is to put up the best efforts to win the Test and retain supremacy in the series. We would do what will be the best for the team.”

The head coach said the team was even ready to counter the best spin attack from South Africa. “Shamsi could not play the first Test. Let’s see how he would go on to perform here if selected.”

‘Rauf bowling brilliantly in the nets’

Praising Haris Rauf for bowling brilliantly in the nets, the former captain said: We have given him a long run and he came out good. He is bowling some fine spells even with an old ball in the nets and is improving with each passing day. He is talented and a good future is ahead of him. If there is a need to add one pacer in the team we even can consider him.”

Speaking about Hassan Ali’s selection, he said that he would be needing some time to get into the best shape.

“No one can deny his utility in the team. He can be utilised in the team as a fielder, bowler, and batsman. We are also using Shaheen Shah Afridi very carefully as putting extra pressure on him would be a risky affair.”

Opening pair

Expressing concerns over the opening pair, Misbah said that the management wanted to give an extended run to what was available.

“Yes, it is unfortunate that we haven’t got a settled opening pair as yet. The same has happened in New Zealand. We are trying to give our openers a longer run and want to get the best out of them.”

Regarding reports on the possibility of losing his job as head coach after the series, Misbah said he was only focusing on his present-day responsibilities.

“I never take pressure as few things always remain beyond our control. I am only focusing on the series and right now on the second Test. I don’t want to take extra pressure.”
