Shakib hits fifty as Bangladesh reach 328-7 at lunch against West Indies

Chittagong, Bangladesh, Feb 4  : Shakib Al Hasan struck 68 and Mehidy Hasan closed on a half century as Bangladesh reached 328-7 at lunch on the second day in the first Test against the West Indies in Chittagong on Thursday.

Shakib was out for 68 off 150 balls, with Mehidy not out 46 and Taijul Islam on five at the interval after the hosts resumed at 242-5.

The West Indies had an early breakthrough, dismissing Liton Das for 38 after the right-hander added just four runs to his overnight score, bowled by Jomel Warrican.

But Shakib and Mehidy then added 67 runs for the seventh wicket before pff-spinner Rahkeem Cornwall struck just before lunch.

Shakib cut a loose to Kraigg Brathwaite at point after hitting five fours in a patient knock.

The visitors dropped Mehidy at 24 as Shayne Moseley put down a simple catch at silly point off which would have given Warrican (4-100) a maiden five-wicket Test haul.

‘One in a million’ Root set for century of Tests

New Delhi, Feb 4  : England skipper Joe Root goes into his 100th Test on Friday seeking a repeat of how he started his illustrious career — with a rare series win on Indian soil.

Root, 30, will lead England in the four Tests knowing that he needs a win to stand any chance of reaching the inaugural World Test Championship final in June.

Root made his debut in 2012 at Nagpur in the fourth match of a series won by England 2-1 under Alastair Cook, their last triumph in India.

His career has had its highs and lows but Root has established himself as one of the world’s top batsmen.

“I think walking out in an England shirt will probably be the proudest moment,” Root told reporters on Thursday, on the eve of the opening Test in Chennai.

“I look back at walking up to bat and see Kevin Pietersen stood at the other end, someone whom I watched as a teenager and a kid growing up. I just couldn’t stop smiling. I was living my childhood dream.”

He added: “If I am ever going through a bit of lean spell or things aren’t quite falling for me then I try and look back at that moment and remember what that feeling was like.”

After his debut, Root was involved in a Birmingham pub brawl in 2013 when he was punched by Australia’s David Warner.

But he matured to become a batting mainstay and an impressive team leader.

Root failed to hit a century in 2020 but rebounded with innings of 228 and 186 in successive Tests in Sri Lanka last month.

Former England captain Nasser Hussain called Root a “one in a million” player who England should be proud of.

“It’s the fact that he does so much for English cricket, on and off the field,” Hussain wrote in the Daily Mail when in England were in Sri Lanka.

“When he phoned that lone England fan, who had watched the first Test from the walls of the Galle Fort, at the end of the game, I just thought what an impressive guy he was.”

Root has said the Warner incident made him “reassess things” as he turned from team joker to a serious player who concentrates on scoring runs.

His match-winning scores in Sri Lanka, as England swept the series, took him to 8,249 runs including 19 hundreds, surpassing England greats Geoffrey Boycott (8,114), Pietersen (8,181) and David Gower (8,231).

– ‘Great man-manager’ –

Root played the sweep and reverse sweep shots brilliantly as he tackled the Sri Lanka spinners on a turning pitch at Galle.

“He has always had a brilliant game against spin bowling. He is one of the best exponents of the sweep shot and he picks length brilliantly which is a big strength when playing against spin,” teammate Jos Buttler said.

“He is in great form and that is a great place for him to be at the start of the year, and for the team to watch him and learn from him,” Buttler added.

Even though England have now won five overseas Tests in a row, their best run for more than 100 years, Root will need all of his guile to take on India on their home turf.

He knows that first-innings runs will be key to any hopes of success. India scored at least 400 in the first innings of all five Tests when they smashed England 4-0 on their last visit in 2016-17.

He is known to have studied the tactics of other England captains who have won in India. And win or lose, he is certain to keep the captain’s job.

Root made his debut days before his 22nd birthday but soon found favour as a regular in the England XI and a probable captaincy prospect.

After taking over when Cook stepped down as Test in 2017, Root has led England to 25 Test wins in 46 matches. His 54 percent win rate is second only to Mike Brearley (58.06) among captains who have led the team in 15 or more matches.

England’s new star fast bowler Jofra Archer says it is reassuring to play under Root, who he calls a “great man manager” and “a great person”.

Brazil aims to buy 30 mn Sputnik V, Covaxin shots

Brasília, Feb 4 : The Brazilian government announced Wednesday it was negotiating the purchase of 30 million coronavirus vaccine doses from Russia and India, after regulators made it easier for the treatments to win emergency-use authorizations.

Until now, only the AstraZeneca/Oxford shot and China’s CoronaVac have been permitted in Brazil, the second-hardest-hit country after the US, with more than 226,000 deaths from Covid-19.

Brazil’s health surveillance agency said it would no longer require final Phase 3 trials to be carried out in Brazil, clearing the way for the emergency authorization of Russia’s Sputnik V and India’s Covaxin vaccinations.

The health ministry said it is meeting with representatives from Russia and India on Friday to finalize details of a deal, which would see some 10 million Sputnik V doses and 20 million Covaxin doses delivered in February and March.

The move comes after The Lancet medical journal this week published results showing Sputnik V — named after the Soviet-era satellite — to be safe and 91.6 percent effective, allaying concerns over transparency.

Brazil began vaccinations January 17, starting with medical workers, the indigenous population and the elderly.

With 212 million inhabitants, Brazil has suffered an average of 1,062 deaths and 50,000 cases per day in the past week.

Several other South American countries have already started using Sputnik V, including Mexico, Venezuela and Argentina, and on Wednesday Nicaragua said it too had approved the shot under an emergency authorization.

Colombia, meanwhile, said it had approved the use of China-made Sinovac.

IMF warns of ‘uneven’ Mideast recovery with lopsided vaccine rollout

Dubai, Feb 4  : Economic recovery in the Middle East and North Africa is expected to accelerate this year following a double whammy shock, but growth will be uneven due to unbalanced access to the coronavirus vaccine, the IMF said.

The region — which includes all Arab countries and Iran — suffered one of its worst economic performances last year due to lower oil prices and sweeping lockdowns to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

But while the region’s economy shrank by 3.8 percent in 2020, the International Monetary Fund expects growth of 3.1 percent this year and 4.2 percent next year amid a rebound in oil prices and the roll out of vaccines.

“This year we expect a recovery after the year 2020 that was a year like no other where the region faced one of the most severe dual shocks,” Jihad Azour, director of the Middle East and Central Asia Department at the IMF.

“Of course, we are in a period of high uncertainty and the race between the virus and the vaccine will define the recovery pace. And this recovery pace will vary between countries depending on access to the vaccine.”

Many countries in the region haven’t launched vaccination campaigns yet due to worldwide shortages, internal conflicts and weak finances. Wealthy Gulf states were among the first to start turbocharged programs.

The UAE and Bahrain have administered two of the fastest per capita deliveries in the world.

“Currently, we are seeing a great divergence between countries. Those who are among the front runners worldwide in terms of vaccination, like UAE and Bahrain, will have a faster recovery than those who are lagging,” said Azour.

“Therefore it’s a recovery that is uneven and uncertain.”

After a 4.8 percent contraction in 2020, oil-rich Gulf states are expected to grow by 2.5 percent this year, according to the IMF.

Saudi Arabia, the biggest oil exporter and largest Arab economy, is tipped to expand by 2.6 percent this year following negative growth of 3.9 percent in 2020.

Last outing for Quinton de Kock as South Africa’s Test captain

Rawalpindi : Quinton de Kock will no longer be South Africa’s Test captain once the ongoing second Test against Pakistan concludes.

Proteas head coach Mark Boucher on Wednesday in a virtual press conference said that the 28-year-old will be released from the burden of Test captaincy after this series.

De Kock was appointed on a temporary basis in October last year until a permanent candidate could be found.

“When we get back we’ve got a bit of time before our next Test series so we can sit down and make a good, solid call on who can take over from him and release him from that burden,” Boucher said

“We will try and get the best out of him. It’s been tough on Quinny. If you’re not scoring runs it gets highlighted, especially if you’re a captain,” Boucher added.

“We’re not that harsh on Quinny in this environment. We know that he’s a quality player and there’s a good innings around the corner for him. He has been given the extra burden of being captain and that can be tough and something he’s not used to,” he maintained.

De Kock, who leads South Africa in all three formats, won the home Test series against Sri Lanka 2-0 while lost the first Test against Pakistan in Karachi.

Experts call for peaceful solution of Kashmir dispute

ISLAMABAD (DNA) -Decades have been passed since the matter of humanity in Kashmir was brought to international arena and still their anguish reaches new heights every day. February 5th is not a day it is an emotion, a tale of agony which innocent Kashmiris face every day in their own land. Humanity is being held hostage by the Indian subjugation. While Indians are engaged in non-humanistic solution of Kashmir issue, Pakistan stands firm with their brothers and sisters in pain. In this regard Islamabad Institute of Conflict Resolution (IICR) is paying homage to our martyrs in their struggle for freedom by organizing one day International Youth Conference  on February 3rd, 2021 titled “Kashmir: A Question of Humanity”

The participants included Mrs. Danielle Khan – Special Assistant to Dean Eliot A. Cohen at Johns Hopkins, Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies, USA ,Mr. Arqam Al Hadeed- Leeds Youth MP 2018-2020, Leeds, UK, Mr. ShafaMovsumlu – Scientist and Historian, Baku, Azerbaijan, Ms. Afifa Khan Sodozai – Kashmir Youth Ambassador, Mr. Khawaja Hammad Akbar –  Political Analyst,Mr Salman Afridi a Kashmir youth activist and advisor to Kashmir committee Pakistan and a youth activist from Azerbaijan MrRamilShukurov. Session was moderated byMr. Syed Nasir Hassan – Program Coordinator, IICR

The speakers emphasized that Kashmir is a flash point and there needs to be a peaceful solution for Kashmir issue which under thesick hindutva mindset of Modi is getting difficult.  Kashmir is a question of not only basic human rights being bulldozed by the regime but world is witnessing a categorical constitutional abuse that is being carried out to rob the people of IIOJK of their identity and who they truly are. Panelists agreed that this design that is being carried out haven’t left any space even for the moderate or liberal leadership of Kashmir. It is a case of minority rights as well , in India minorities are being manhandled , be it CAA, Sikhs protesting in Delhi or the genocide that is underway in Kashmir.

While expressing their political views speakers added that Kashmir is all about positioning narratives after 9/11 terrorism became the spirit of the age and India used this to its advantage to paint a just struggle in bad colors. World must acknowledge that it is a just indigenous movement of the people of the land to their basic right i-e self-determination. The zeal, the resilience and the soul of resistance that prevails in the valley and Jammu is apparent and vivid. Every sane soul in and outside India feels the pain that is inflicted upon the people of the state. UN must act, justice must be served, and Kashmir siege must end because Kashmiri lives matter. It’s time to act and the time to act is now.
