New Zealand climb to top of ODI rankings

ISLAMABAD, May 03  : New Zealand have moved to the summit of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s ODI team rankings, according to the latest updates issued on Monday.

At the start of May each year, the rating period is recalibrated so only results from the past three years are taken into consideration.

Essentially, results prior to 1 May 2018 no longer influence the rating method, developed by David Kendix, which determines the MRF Tyres ICC team rankings.

In the system, results from the 2018/19 and 2019/20 seasons are weighted at 50 per cent, with matches since May 2020 given their full weighting.

This year’s update sees New Zealand jump two spots to first on the ladder, with England slipping from top spot down to fourth. Australia has also climbed two positions to second, with India sliding to third, just ahead of England by decimal points.

England’s drop in the rankings comes after a year in which they lost series to India and Australia, as well as an ODI against Ireland. As a result of the update, England’s five straight bilateral ODI series wins in 2017/18 have been discounted from the ratings.

The Black Caps have won 20 of their 30 completed ODIs in the past three years, claiming series wins over Sri Lanka, India, and Bangladesh in that time, as well as a runners-up finish in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019.

Further down the rankings, West Indies have climbed to eighth from ninth, with Sri Lanka going the other way.

New Zealand have moved up from fifth to third, swapping places with Australia.

Despite the coronavirus pandemic, 80 countries have played the requisite six T20Is to remain in the rankings. Five countries have lost their ranking as a result of the update: Gambia, Ghana, Hungary, Sierra Leone, and Sweden.

The Test rankings update will be carried out following the conclusion of the ongoing Pakistan v Zimbabwe series.

Climate change can be alleviated under CPEC: Says Chinese Scholar

BEIJING, May 3  : Climate change can be alleviated under China, Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), said Shen Lei, the executive secretary of China Society of Natural Resources (CSNR), a scholar of Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) in an interview to Gwadar Pro.

He said , “Pakistan has committed more than its share on climate change.” At the world leaders’ climate summit on April 22, Malik Amin Aslam, assistant to the prime minister of Pakistan on climate change, promised a 60% clean energy share by 2030.

“The target is higher than expected. But, according to Shen Lei, under the CPEC, it is entirely possible for Pakistan to achieve this goal with the support of technology, investment and equipment,”that, “in the process of achieving carbon neutrality, Pakistan should strengthen energy and economic cooperation under CPEC.”

Shen added, “Pakistan is rich in clean energy resources, but the degree of development is low, and the supply and demand are seriously unbalanced. Moreover, its power grid around the country is behind with large transmission loss. Energy structure adjustment is an effective way to solve the problem of energy shortage in Pakistan.

With the increase of distributed renewable energy generation, it is very important to fully invest and upgrade the power grid for the safe accommodation of volatile clean power.”

The World Bank believes that Pakistan should add 24,000 megawatts of wind and solar power in the next 10 years, including 6,700 megawatts of wind power and 17,500 megawatts of solar power, which can save $1 billion in annual power generation costs while improving energy supply security for Pakistan.

Shen said, “Obviously, the vigorous development of clean energy will not only make a great contribution to coping with the challenge of global climate change, but also bring a lot of benefits for Pakistan to improve the ecological environment, create economic growth opportunities and improve the quality of life of residents.”

Carbon peaking means that carbon dioxide emissions stop increasing at a certain point in time, and reach a peak, then gradually fall back. Carbon neutralization refers to the total amount of carbon dioxide or greenhouse gas emissions directly or indirectly generated by a country, enterprise, product, activity or individual within a certain period of time, which could be offset by ways of afforestation, energy conservation and emission reduction, achieving positive and negative balance and relative “zero emissions”.

China is striving to peak carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. Shen said, “So far, more than 30 countries and regions (including the European Union) around the world have committed to the goal of carbon neutrality.

In the context of globalization, if some countries do not comply with the trend of carbon neutrality, they will become isolated islands in the wave of global transitions of economic growth and energy development. From this point of view, I think Pakistan should be no exception.”

“I’d like to highlight that carbon neutralization is an important measure to achieve sustainable socio-economic development and ecological civilization construction, but it is not the end point. In the process of achieving carbon neutrality in either China or the rest of the world, Pakistan should strengthen energy and economic cooperation under CPEC and move towards the goal of global community of life.

Ronaldo brace rescues dethroned Juve against Udinese

Milan, May 3  : Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice late to rescue a 2-1 win for Juventus at Udinese on Sunday hours after the Turin giants lost their Serie A crown to Inter Milan.

Inter broke Juve’s nine-year streak of domestic dominance by clinching their 19th ‘Scudetto’ after nearest rivals Atalanta drew 1-1 at Sassuolo to leave the ‘Nerazzurri’ 13 points clear with four games remaining.

Antonio Conte’s side had needed just one point to take the title regardless of how Atalanta fared after their 2-0 win at Crotone on Saturday, and have denied Juve a 10th consecutive league triumph.

Juve’s win moves them up to third as they target a Champions League spot, but are equal on 69 points with second-placed Atalanta and AC Milan in fourth.

Napoli are two points behind in fifth after a 1-1 draw against Cagliari while Lazio are still in the running, five points off a top-four finish with a game in hand after an exciting 4-3 win over Genoa.

“The nine years are over, we will no longer have the Scudetto attached to the shirt, but we will start again with the same desire as before,” said Juve coach Andrea Pirlo.

“We earned this win with effort and pride, and it’s a very important one given the other results this afternoon.

“We lost points against teams that we should have beaten, sometimes naively, we let Inter escape and now we are focused on reaching the Champions League.”

Juventus had trailed for most of the game in Udine after Nahuel Molina put Udinese ahead in the 10th minute, blasting in off a quickly taken Rodrigo De Paul free-kick while Juventus players were still protesting.

Weston McKennie missed a chance to level for the away side before the half hour mark when he sent a diving header wide.

Matthijs de Ligt had a shot charged down with Ronaldo nodding over the follow-up.

The equaliser came with seven minutes to go after De Paul conceded a penalty for handball from a Ronaldo free-kick, with the Portuguese forward making no mistake from the penalty spot.

Four minutes later he grabbed the winner when he headed home an Adrien Rabiot cross, with relieved coach Andrea Pirlo racing to join the celebrations.

Ronaldo’s brace takes his Serie A-leading tally to 27 goals, six more than Inter’s Romelu Lukaku.

In Emilia-Romagna, Atalanta played most of the match a man down after goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini saw red after 22 minutes at the Mapei Stadium.

Atalanta’s Robin Gosens scored 10 minutes after Gollini’s sending off for recklessly bringing down Jeremie Boga.

Domenico Berardi pulled Sassuolo level from the penalty spot seven minutes after the break after Hamed Traore went down in the penalty box under pressure from Rafael Toloi.

Sassuolo also played the final quarter of an hour with 10 men after Brazilian defender Marlon was sent off for a second yellow card, but goalkeeper Andrea Consigli saved Muriel’s penalty to hand Inter the title.

In Naples, Nahitan Nandez got a late equaliser for relegation-threatened Cagliari to cancel out Victor Osimhen’s 13th-minute opener.

Lazio’s thrilling victory over Genoa secured a club-record 11th consecutive win.

Joaquin Correa scored a brace, breaking the deadlock after half an hour and striking again 11 minutes after the break.

Ciro Immobile added the second from the penalty spot before half-time after an Ivan Radovanovic foul.

Genoa got back into the game when under-pressure Lazio defender Adam Marusic turned into his own net.

Luis Alberto curled in a third for the hosts just after with Correa then making it 4-1.

The hosts survived a late scare as Genoa fought back with Gianluca Scamacca slotting in a penalty with 10 minutes to go and Eldor Shomurodov blasting in another goal almost immediately afterwards.

Roma extended their winless run to four games with a 2-0 defeat at Sampdoria to slip to nine points off the Europa League berths.
