BILL AGAINST CHINA’S IMPORTS STIRS DEBATE IN AUSTRALIA

With a move of tabling a bill by an independent Senator seeking a ban on imports from China, a debate has been started whether the Morrison administration would follow the Western countries or it will still be willing to work with Chinese Government to ease diplomatic dilemma.

Last week, Senator Rex Patrick tabled a bill seeking to amend the Australian Customs Act to bar the import of goods from Xinjiang and other regions of China where the products are prepared by alleged forced labour.

To stop the human rights violations and other atrocities committed by the Chinese government, the senator demanded of the Australian government to pass the bill that specifically targets the supply chains of Chinese cotton production lines.

Western countries and mainly the United States believe that the forced labour in Uyghur Muslims majority populated Xinjiang region has full support of the government, a claim that China continuously negates. The Chinese government has denied the claims of forced labour and human rights abuses in Xinjiang

China has reportedly established scores of forced labour camps along with indoctrination centres in the Xinjiang region, which some Uyghurs in the region call East Turkistan.

China is currently facing sanctions and importation of Xinjiang cotton and tomatoes is banned in US while many Western lawmakers demanding to boycott the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

In March this year, Chinese foreign affairs spokesman Zhao Lijian blatantly denied the claims of forced labour and concentration camps for Muslims saying that there was not a grain of truth in the ‘absurd allegation’.

He added that such an allegation was made to hold back the development of the relevant Chinese side and Chinese companies.

“Some anti-China forces ignore facts and truth and wantonly fabricate all kinds of Xinjiang-related lies. People of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang, including Xinjiang women, live and work in peace and contentment,” he said.

Mr. SM Hali, who is an expert in China’s relations with the world, said that Australian authorities led by Morrison have adopted a policy of confronting the mainland of China on several issues.

These issues, according to him, includes the Xinjiang issue, the Hong Kong issue, the South China Sea issue and the Taiwan issue, which has triggered a strong reaction from Chinese mainland.

Morrison’s government is under enormous economic pressure from the worst Sino Australian relations in history, he says.

“However, it is questionable whether Australia’s policy of following the United States will bring maximum benefits to Australia. After all, although Biden authorities still show a strong attitude towards China, they also send Kerry to Shanghai to explore the possibility of cooperation with China,” says Mr. Hali.

Other veteran analysts believe that Australia was still like a “dutiful” clown, helping Uncle Sam (US) to blame China, regardless of the fact that Uncle Sam has contacted with the Chinese dragon.

“In response to Japan’s recent decision to discharge nuclear waste water into the Pacific Ocean, Australia, as a stakeholder, seems to have deliberately ignored this major international event and kept silent on it.”

“Morrison’s authorities completely ignored the prospect of Australian Fisheries and gave up an excellent opportunity to seek reconciliation with the Chinese government, because the Chinese authorities have expressed concern about Japan’s practice.”

“In terms of distance, Australia is closer to Asia than United States, not to mention that Australia’s main geopolitical interests lie in Asia. It is time for the Morrison administration to consider how Australia’s foreign policy as an independent country serves its national interests, and then make the right diplomatic choice,” concludes Mr. Hali.

ISRAEL DETAINS 15 MORE PALESTINIANS IN EAST JERUSALEM

Israeli forces detained 15 more Palestinians in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of the occupied East Jerusalem on Friday.

A police statement said the Palestinians “were detained on charges of throwing stones and assaulting police officers and civilians.”

Protests have raged in the area since an Israeli court this month ordered Palestinian families who have lived there for generations to vacate their homes for Israeli settlers.

Israeli forces have detained dozens of Palestinians in recent days and physically assaulted residents and people who have shown up to express solidarity.

Among other excessive measures, the Israeli forces have used water cannons and stun grenades against Palestinians, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent.

A UN envoy and European powers have urged Israel to halt demolitions and evictions.

A total of 37 Palestinian families have been living in 27 homes in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood since 1956.

Jewish settlers have been trying to force them out on the basis of a law approved by the Israeli parliament in 1970.

Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were forced to flee their villages and towns in historical Palestine to neighboring countries including Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria in 1948.

Residents of other parts of Palestine found themselves displaced to the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including amid rising attacks by Zionist gangs to pave the way for the creation of Israel.

MUSLIM WOMEN LAUNCH ‘DON’T TOUCH MY HIJAB’ MOVEMENT IN FRANCE

PARIS – During recent debate over a French bill many charge is Islamophobic, the way the bill in particular targeted the wearing of hijabs came under fierce criticism, especially from the women who say choosing how they dress is their God-given right.

The bill would ban mothers from wearing hijabs (headscarves) while accompanying their children on school trips, prohibit the wearing of coverup burkinis (full-body swimwear) in public pools, and ban minor girls from concealing their face or wearing religious symbols in the public space.

In the face of these legal challenges, a number of French women started a “don’t touch my hijab” movement on social media.

Duygu Akın, who started the movement with other French Muslim women, spoke with Anadolu Agency about Islamophobic attitudes and laws in her country.

‘HIJABS ALWAYS MADE INTO AN ISSUE’

Akin, 25, a French Muslim woman who wears a headscarf, is set to enter the business world armed with a forthcoming master’s degree in finance.

Akin, who lives in Strasbourg, said hijabs in France have long been made a subject of controversy, and have been brought up again and again.

After a British social media influencer showed her opposition to France’s hijab bans by writing “hands off my hijab” on her own hands, Akin and her friends decided to take action and translated the phrase into French.

“We wrote #pastoucheamonhijab [Don’t touch my hijab] on our hands and posted pictures on social media. With the support of those who saw our message, our movement expanded to the media,” she said.

Akin said the movement got a very good response both in France and abroad.

“Even some journalists reacted with astonishment over how hijabs are such a big issue in France even during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

‘PUBLIC BAN SPREAD TO PRIVATE COMPANIES’

Wearing a hijab during education faces many challenges in France, said Akin, adding that high schools prohibit it.

“Although only public companies have (overt) bans on hijabs, many private companies don’t hire women who wear headscarves. This is precisely because there is a bad perception of hijabs in France,” said Akin.

While the French media aired serious allegations about women who wear headscarves, they were never given a voice, she added, saying: “Together with my friends, we fought for our own voice, we found it ourselves.”

“In France, choosing and practicing a religion is a fundamental freedom and our right. These bans are completely against our freedoms. We, citizens of France who wear hijabs, demand our freedoms, which are our rights,” said Akin.

MEDIA COVERAGE OF ISLAM RESULTS IN BIAS

Akin said that France has been urging women to take off hijabs and “get their freedom” since the colonial period in Algeria.

Stating that people in cities such as Strasbourg with a large Muslim population are more accustomed to living together and respect each other, Akin added: “In some regions where there are no Muslims, the French are very prejudiced against Muslims. This is only because they learn about Islam from the media.”

Akin said that she and her friends taking part in the PasToucheAMonHijab movement started to write letters to members of parliament to express their opposition to headscarf bans and seek their support.

“Our primary current goal is blocking this bill,” she explained.

“Of course, this isn’t enough, because we want to prevent headscarves from constantly being made into an issue. Even if the bill isn’t passed, the fact that headscarves are always on the agenda causes a bad perception in people’s minds. We want to fight this too.”

ONETIME ‘RELIGIOUS SYMBOL BAN’ BECOMES ‘HIJAB BAN’

“In recent years, hijabs have been chosen instead of the word ‘religious symbol.’ They particularly point to this. It’s not just any religious symbol, the hijab is banned. They use the word hijab,” Akin explained.

“This is a direct Islamophobic problem. Because it directly targets Muslim women who wear headscarves.”

Akin said French President Emmanuel Macron had no problem with hijabs when he was first elected but later his attitude changed.

“He’s approaching the end of his term and he’s trying to get votes from the right wing. Also, we feel like we hijab-wearing women are being used to avoid talking about real problems,” she said.

“For example, there were the (nationwide) Yellow Vest protests, but the main issue was (still) hijabs. Then there is this huge health crisis worldwide, but still headscarves are the main topic of discussion.”

‘WE WANT TO BE KNOWN FOR OUR PROFESSIONS’

Akin said she was surprised by the fight against hijabs in France, which many around the world see as “the country of freedom and equality.”

“I really feel very sad because we’re French citizens who were brought up in France, and it’s very sad that the state ignores us and alienates us,” she explained.

“We make our contributions to this society, we have roles in social life. We don’t just want to be used in the media when there’s a problem.”

For the first time, Muslim women wearing hijabs found their voice, the right to speak out on an issue that affects them the most, something they did not have before, Akin said.

“The main idea behind the ‘don’t touch my hijab’ movement is to say ‘don’t touch my freedom, my decisions’,” she urged.

US NAVY PATROLLING IN INDIA’S EEZ CARRIES MESSAGE FOR ALL COASTAL STATES, WARN EXPERTS

ISLAMABAD, MAY 7 (DNA) – The US Navy’s navigation operations in India’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) is an attempt to assert its dominating role in the Indian Ocean Region and carries a message for the coastal states in the region, especially the major maritime powers, India and China.

This was the crux of a webinar titled ‘Freedom of Navigation Operations Patrol (FONOP) – Issues and Legalities’, which was organized by Institute of Policy Studies, Islamabad.

Chaired by IPS’ Vice Chairman Ambassador (r) Syed Abrar Hussain, the session was addressed by Commodore (r) Syed Mohammad Obaidullah SI(M), former executive director, Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) and founding director of National Centre for Maritime Policy Research (NCMPR), and Commodore (r) Baber Bilal SI(M), director, National Institute of Maritime Affairs (NIMA), Islamabad.

The session was also partaken by other maritime scholars and experts including IPS’ Non-Resident Fellow Dr Maliha Zeba Khan, assistant professor, National University of Modern Languages (NUML), Naufil Shahrukh, GM Operations IPS and Secretary General, Maritime Study Forum, a Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA) panel led by Deputy Director Operations Lt Cdr Hafiz Faisal Javed, Dr Faisal Javaid, assistant professor, Federal Urdu University Karachi, Samina Qureshi, assistant professor, Karachi University, and Attorney Muslim Bin Aqeel, maritime lawyer and research associate at Maritime Study Forum (MSF).

Cdr (r) Obaidullah, the keynote speaker of the session, was of the view that the recent US Navy’s maneuvers in the Indian Ocean challenged India’s aspirations to become a global maritime power and claim Indian Ocean as ‘India’s ocean’.

He further added, India being a US strategic partner has taken this action with a pinch of salt as the message has been conveyed to the former that even the strategic partnership cannot stop the USA from carrying out such activities. Besides, this also conveys a message to other regional actors including China that similar operations could be conducted in their respective maritime zones, he warned.

Commenting on the US navy sailing through India’s EEZ without prior intimation on April 7, 2021, the former commodore said the U.S being a non-signatory of UNCLOS (United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea) conducts FONOPs on regular basis to challenge excessive maritime claims of other countries. With regards to the concerns shown by the Indian government over the incident, he mentioned that it is rather a matter of interpretation as the USA believes articles 19 and 24 of UNCLOS give it right to pass through sans permission of coastal states.

Explaining legalities of the matter, Cdre (r) Bilal said the sovereignty of coastal states extend to 12 nautical miles, whereas surface and subsurface in the EEZ are considered global commons and hence, coastal states cannot bar other countries from sailing through it. He also added that India’s aspirations for establishing its hegemony in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) are thwarted by the US action.

Other discussants opined that such kind of operations do not have direct implications for Pakistan, but keeping in mind the US-Sino rivalry, the US can conduct a FONOP in the Western Indian Ocean region to check China’s influence, command and control over navigation in this region as a global right. They also raised questions over the mild protest of the Indian government on the US action which, they doubt, was carried out in connivance with the latter.

Concluding the session, former ambassador Syed Abrar opined that the US move is significant, yet not uncommon, and at prima facie is aimed at countering the influence of China in the region. Though it is too late to put a check on China’s ever-expanding prowess, he observed.=DNA

ISLAMABAD, May 7 : Adviser to Prime Minister on Commerce, Abdul Razak Dawood Friday said that the announcement of including Pakistan in Amazon’s sellers list was a big news that would open new avenues of e-commerce and exports for the country.

“Pakistan is about to enter a new era of e-commerce as Amazon will give the boost to Pakistan’s e-commerce landscape,” he said while addressing a press conference here along with Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Hussain Chaudhry.

He said the Amazon would provide the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) platform to sell their products anywhere in the global market.

He said thousand of jobs and entrepreneurial opportunities will be created with the decision specially the young breed and women entrepreneurs could earn money through this platform.

However, he said there were some challenges which needed to be addressed. “Our courier companies would have to show responsibility in timely delivery of parcels around the globe,” he said adding the manufacturers and entrepreneurs would also have to maintain the quality of their products according to the international standards.

The minister added that the government would also provide training to the sellers through Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) that how to deal with the customers on Amazon. Meanwhile Economic Counsellor, Pakistan’s Permanent Mission to the WTO and Additional Secretary Ministry of Commerce Aisha Moriani said on the occasion that the Ministry of Commerce was working on this matter for the last one year and a pilot project was initiated with the help of Pakistan Embassy USA.

Aisha Moriani who was leading the matter of Amazon, said Amazon made almost 300-400 billion USD sales every year.

Pakistan’s addition in the sellers list will create new export opportunities, Amazon’s 3P model serves brand owners while 1P model is for mass producers who want to produce for Amazon brand items. Some of the Pakistani companies are already selling on Amazon but Pakistan’s inclusion in the list will increase opportunities for SMEs, she added.

She said the National E-Commerce Council (NECC) was instrumental in taking the issue forward as all public sector organizations were represented there.

She said although Pakistani products were already being sold on Amazon as it had a good manufacturing base for textile, sports, leather and surgical goods. However Pakistan was not in the sellers list and companies had to register from their offices outside Pakistan or they were producing for other brands available on Amazon.

The major difference after being added in the sellers list will be that Pakistani companies would be able to create IDs using their Pakistani details including Pakistani banks, she added.

She added that SMEs youth and women entrepreneurs would have great opportunities to connect with the global market and the new era of Ecommerce boom for Pakistan would start to promote more business and Pakistani brands as they would be able to access all major markets through Amazon.

She said that the private sector logistics companies had an opportunity to scale up businesses and develop international partnerships for making logistics perform for effective delivery.

“Pak Post is also having automation and preparing itself for parcel deliveries. It is also a business opportunity for marketing service providers to develop Pakistani brands, content and quality pictures for Pakistani sellers,” she added.

PCB completes first phase of Covid-19 vaccination for players, support staff

LAHORE  , May 07  : Pakistan Cricket Board on Friday successfully completed the first phase of its Covid-19 vaccination drive in collaboration with Pakistan government’s National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC).

During this phase, Pakistan’s leading cricketers across all three formats and support staff were vaccinated. The PCB takes pride in being one of the first cricket boards in the world to provide a robust vaccination program to ensure the health and safety of its players and support staff in the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

In the first phase, 57 men players, 13 officials of the men’s team and 13 NHPC men and women coaches were vaccinated.

A number of franchise players and support staff besides PCB match officials involved in the February-March phase of the HBL Pakistan Super League (three match referees, three umpires) were also vaccinated.

The vaccination drive started on March 4, last, in Karachi and carried on for more than two months, before its conclusion on May 6 when eight players – part of Pakistan’s squad for the ongoing Test series against Zimbabwe – were given second doses in Harare.

In the next phase, remaining domestic men cricketers, national women cricketers, age-group cricketers and support staff of the domestic, national women and age-group teams will be vaccinated. The second-phase is expected to commence shortly.

PCB Chief Operating Officer Salman Naseer said, the PCB has a duty of care towards its cricketers, especially in the ongoing pandemic, and keeping that in mind we requested the NCOC for vaccines during the HBL Pakistan Super League 6. The vaccination drive started in Karachi and our first priority was to get the players and support staff involved in the tournament vaccinated.

He said, after the initial round of vaccination in Karachi, we focused on getting the remaining members of the men’s squad, who were not involved in the HBL PSL 6, vaccinated before the tours of South Africa and Zimbabwe.

“We remain grateful to the NCOC for recognizing the importance of vaccines for our players and prioritizing them for national interest as both players and support staff are constantly traveling for domestic and international cricket commitments and carry infection risks especially once outside the bio secure bubbles,” he added.

The PCB is fully behind the government’s vaccination drive and once again urges people across Pakistan to get vaccinated in order to ensure the health and safety of their own selves and their families, he said.

Our players – both men and women – and PCB management will continue to provide full support and backing to the NCOC vaccine awareness initiatives as they have done repeatedly since the outbreak of the pandemic last year, he added.

PRCS CELEBRATES WORLD RCRC DAY

ISLAMABAD, MAY 7 (DNA) – The Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) is celebrating the World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day on Saturday to pay tribute to its staff and volunteers for their services towards communities amid highly challenging situations due to the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic.

The World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is celebrated on May 8 every year, and is dedicated to the staff and volunteers of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement who are always on the frontline to help vulnerable communities in the wake of any humanitarian crises.

The Movement is comprised of 192 National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies with 160,000 local branches and around 14 million volunteers worldwide, the ICRC, and the IFRC. It’s estimated that one in every 636 people in the world is a Red Cross or Red Crescent volunteer.

This year, the theme for World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is #Unstoppable, referring to the ‘unstoppable’ commitment of the RCRC Movement towards communities.

“Since past year, Covid-19 has brought fear and disruption into the lives of people across Pakistan. This has changed the lives of people who were already affected by challenges like poverty, lack of health, education and civic facilities, etc. But one thing has not changed: the support provided by the PRCS volunteers, who have been in communities every single day helping them with provision of first aid, timely supply of blood, food, safe drinking water, and awareness on critical healthcare issues amid Covid-19 pandemic. Their commitment has been ‘unstoppable’ even in such a difficult times,” PRCS Chairman Abrar ul Haq said in a statement on the occasion.

Abrar ul Haq paid tributes to the volunteers and staff of the PRCS who, he said, have done a remarkable job, especially during the pandemic. He said the PRCS has taken plenty of initiatives to contain coronavirus as well as educate the masses about how to avoid contracting the infection since the outbreak early last year. He said among some larger-than-life initiatives taken by the PRCS are the launch of Corona Muhafiz Response Campaign, Agahi Helpline and the establishment of Red Crescent Corona Care Hospital in Rawalpindi, COVID19 Mass Vaccination Center.

“All this was made possible only due to dedication and commitment of the PRCS staff and volunteers,” he said, and also paid tribute to the healthcare workers and personnel of law enforcement agencies who have been working day and night to serve the humanity across country. “PRCS volunteers and staff know that the power to change the world lies within people and communities. They work every day to make sure that communities have the knowledge and means to protect themselves, reduce their risks and live safely and with dignity,” he further said. “Our commitment to make the world a safer and more peaceful place is unstoppable,” he added.=DNA
