Facebook says it could pay more tax after G7 deal

Facebook (FB.O) welcomes the progress made by the Group of Seven on a minimum tax rate and accepts this could mean the social network pays more tax, and in different places, its head of global affairs Nick Clegg said on Saturday.

“Facebook has long called for reform of the global tax rules and we welcome the important progress made at the G7,” Clegg said on Twitter. “Today’s agreement is a significant first step towards certainty for businesses and strengthening public confidence in the global tax system.

“We want the international tax reform process to succeed and recognize this could mean Facebook paying more tax, and in different places.”

The United States, Britain and other leading nations reached a landmark deal on Saturday to pursue higher global taxation on multinational businesses such as Google, Facebook, Apple and Amazon.

In a move that could raise hundreds of billions of dollars to help governments cope with the aftermath of COVID-19, the Group of Seven (G7) large advanced economies agreed to back a minimum global corporate tax rate of at least 15%. Companies will also have to pay more tax in the countries where they make sales.

“G7 finance ministers have reached a historic agreement to reform the global tax system to make it fit for the global digital age,” British finance minister Rishi Sunak said after chairing a two-day meeting in London.

Boris Johnson hails PM Imran Khan’s 10 Billion Trees programme

LONDON: British Prime Minister (PM) Boris Johnson has appreciated Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan for starting the 10 Billion Tsumani Trees programme to deal with climate change.

In his message on World Environment Day Boris Johnson said that climate change is driven once again by our actions and the way we treat the natural world. He urged the countries to redouble efforts to control the rise in temperature.

He saluted PM Imran khan for promising to plant 10 billion trees to tackle climate change and also vowed to start a Pakistan-like plantation drive in the United Kingdom.

Addressing the ceremony in Islamabad to commemorate World Environment Day in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), yesterday, Prime minister Imran Khan termed it an honour for Pakistan to host the World Environment Day.

He had said that previously only 640 million trees were planted in the country while the PTI-led KP government alone during its five-year tenure planted one billion saplings.

“Unfortunately, forest land in Pakistan has been ruined and occupied,” he said and blamed the timber mafia for ruining the jungle area in the country.

Education ministry’s nod sought for promotion of students to higher classes, exam schedule

ISLAMABAD: Federal education ministry has been sent a summary regarding the promotion of students to higher classes and the schedule of examinations.

According to sources having knowledge of the development, the summary was conveyed to the education ministry by the director-general of the federal directorate of education.

The summary, according to sources, sought the federal government’s approval for the promotion of students studying in grades one to four and in grades sixth and seventh.

“The students will be promoted on the basis of their last year’s results,” they said as last year students in classes one to eight appeared in the exams and were promoted to higher classes on the basis of their results.

They said that it has been further recommended to conduct exams for the fifth and eighth grades this year. “The federal education directorate would conduct centralized examinations for students in grades five and eight,” the summary read.

On June 02, Federal Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood announced that matric and intermediate exams would begin after July 10 across the country.

Briefing media about the decisions taken in today’s Inter-Provincial Education Ministers Conference (IPEMC) the education minister Shafqat Mahmood once again cleared that no student will be promoted to the next class without examinations this year.

“Exams for students of classes nine and 10 would be held only for mathematics and elective subjects this year,” he said and added that exams for students of classes 11 and 12 would be held for elective subjects only.

Covid-19: Punjab to fine teachers refusing to get vaccinated

ISLAMABAD – The Punjab government has instructed teachers across the province to get vaccinated by June 5. According to a notification issued by the Punjab School Education Department, the decision was announced on the instructions of the National Command and Operation Centre.

All teaching and non-teaching staff members will have to submit their vaccination cards/certificates to their institutions. Those who fail to do so will be punished under the Punjab Employees Efficiency, Discipline, and Accountability Act 2006.

Pakistan shook conscience of West over Palestine issue: FM Qureshi

MULTAN, June 05 (DNA): Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood on Saturday said that Pakistan has registered its clear stance on the Palestine issue and that despite innocent Palestinians were bombarded there was an international media blackout.

Addressing the Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) workers gathered in his hometown, today the Foreign Minister said Prime Minister Imran Khan has adopted a clear stance on Palestinian issue and Pakistan played a critical role to stop Israeli aggression in Gaza.

He said the incumbent government took steps to educate the world and to prompt action against Israeli apartheid against Palestine, which included lobbying and advocating to convene a United Nations session over Palestine and intimating the Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC).

The advocacy through Pakistan bore fruit after four UNGA sessions remained futile and inconclusive as we presented and fought the case of Palestine from the OIC platform, he said.

Israel had to relent and backtrack from its position due to the pressure built against it with the help of Pakistan.

He said he had set out to raise the Palestinian question in the West and then as a result when there was a concerted “Jewish lobby” conspired against him each child of Pakistan came out to defend him.

The Foreign Minister said entire nation is united on the issues of Palestine and Kashmir.

Regarding Afghanistan, Shah Mahmood Qureshi said Pakistan will continue its efforts for peace and stability in Afghanistan.

He said Pakistan’s Economy is in now on positive trajectory due to prudent policies of the government.

ANADOLU AGENCY CONDOLES OVER DEATH OF AZERBAIJANI JOURNALISTS IN MINE BLAST

Director General Karagoz says Armenia still takes lives of innocent people in places where Karabakh occupation came to end

ANKARA – Turkey’s international news agency on Saturday offered its condolences to Azerbaijan over the deaths of two Azerbaijani journalists in a landmine explosion planted by Armenia during its occupation of the Kalbajar region.

Serdar Karagoz, the agency’s chairman of the board and director-general, said in a letter of condolences that he has learned with great sorrow that three people, including Meherrem Ibrahimov, a journalist for the state news agency Azertac, and Sirac Abishov, a cameraman for Azerbaijan state television AZTV, lost their lives in the blast.

At least 20 Azerbaijani civilians and seven soldiers have been killed by landmines laid by Armenian forces since the two countries reached a truce in Nagorno-Karabakh last November. According to a statement issued by the Azerbaijani Prosecutor General’s Office on Friday, at least 86 soldiers and 29 civilians were also injured in these blasts.

“I strongly condemn that Armenia, which has committed terrible acts against humanity, still takes the lives of innocent people in places where the Karabakh occupation came to an end,” he said, adding that Anadolu Agency stands by all Azerbaijani media on this painful day.

“I wish Allah’s mercy upon our brothers who lost their lives, my condolences and patience to you and all their relatives,” he said.

At least three Azerbaijanis, including two journalists, were killed and four others injured on Friday when a mine planted by Armenia during its occupation exploded.

The explosion happened when a bus carrying journalists in the recently liberated Kalbajar region crossed over the mine.

The Kalbajar region was recently liberated after a nearly three-decade occupation by Armenian forces.

During a 44-day conflict last year, which ended in a truce on Nov. 10, Azerbaijan liberated several cities and nearly 300 settlements and villages in Karabakh from Armenia’s occupation.

The cease-fire is seen as a victory for Azerbaijan and a defeat for Armenia, whose armed forces withdrew in line with the agreement.
