ISLAMABAD, Pakistan and Turkiye on Friday inked the Preferential Trade Agreement aimed at boosting trade in goods between the two countries.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif witnessed the inking of the PTA at a ceremony held here at the PM Office, as the visiting Turkish Trade Minister Dr Mehmet Mus and Minister for Commerce Syed Naveed Qamar signed the accord. Commonly known as Trade in Goods Pact, the PTA includes comprehensive provisions on bilateral safeguards, balance of payment exceptions, dispute settlement, and periodic review of the agreement.

Prime Minister Sharif in his remarks termed the agreement “a great moment and a milestone” in the brotherly and historic relations between Pakistan and Turkiye. He recalled that following his official visit to Turkiye in May, the untiring efforts of the ministries of both sides resulted in the signing of the agreement. He said immense business opportunities existed between the two countries and expressed confidence that the accord would further explore the trade avenues in diverse sectors.

The prime minister said Pakistan would continue to work with Turkiye on strengthening bilateral ties.

Trade Minister Dr Mehmet Mus said the occasion marked a significant milestone which would contribute in a long way to further strengthening and expansion of trade ties. He said meeting expectations of all stakeholders was not easy, however added that dedication and step-by-step measures led to conclusion of the accord.

He thanked PM Shehbaz Sharif for his leadership to seal the agreement for the betterment of the two countries and enhancing linkages between their business communities.

Syed Naveed Qamar hoped the PTA between Pakistan and Turkiye would open up new opportunities to boost bilateral trade across various sectors. He said Pakistan also looked forward to working towards materializing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Turkiye.

He stressed the need for increasing business-to-business interaction for strengthening trade and investment relations between the brotherly countries.

The key highlights of the trade concessions offered by both sides under the agreement are as follows: (i) Turkiye had offered concessions to Pakistan on 261 Tariff Lines, which include key items of Pakistan’s export interest to Turkiye from both agriculture and the industrial sectors.

Shelling threatens Ukrainian nuclear plant, and UN pleads for access

UNITED NATIONS, /DNA/ – The “alarming” situation at Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant had reached a “grave hour,” the head of U.N.’s nuclear watchdog said Thursday, as he called for an immediate inspection of the facility by international experts.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi warned that parts of the nuclear plant had been knocked out due to recent attacks, risking an “unacceptable” potential radiation leak.

“IAEA experts believe that there is no immediate threat to nuclear safety,” but “that could change at any moment,” Grossi said.

“These military actions near such a large nuclear facility could lead to very serious consequences,” Grossi told the Security Council at the meeting requested by Russia,  that  was marked by resounding calls to allow the Agency’s technical experts to visit the area amid mounting safety concerns.

IAEA has been in frequent contact with both Ukraine and Russia to ensure that it has the clearest picture possible of the evolving circumstances.

Providing an overview, the IAEA chief said that on 5 August, the Zaporizhzhia plant – Europe’s largest – was subjected to shelling, which caused several explosions near the electrical switchboard and a power shutdown.

One reactor unit was disconnected from the electrical grid, triggering its emergency protection system and setting generators into operation to ensure power supply.

The senior UN official said that there was also shelling at a nitrogen oxygen station.  While firefighters had extinguished the blaze, repairs must still be examined and evaluated.

He recalled his recent address to the ongoing Tenth Review Conference of the Parties to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, where he outlined seven indispensable pillars that are critical for nuclear safety and security.

These included aspects dealing with the physical integrity of the plant, off-site power supply, cooling systems, and emergency preparedness measures.

“All these pillars have been compromised if not entirely violated at one point or another during this crisis,” flagged the IAEA chief.

“Any nuclear catastrophe would be unacceptable and thus preventing it should be our overarching goal”.

He asked both sides to cooperate with the UN atomic agency.

“This is a serious hour, a grave hour, and the IAEA must be allowed to conduct its mission in Zaporizhzhia as soon as possible”.

Presenting his case, the Russian delegate said Ukrainian forces used heavy artillery against Zaporizhzhia on 5 August, shelling the plant during a shift change to intimidate staff – their own citizens.

He upheld that on 6 August, those forces attacked with cluster munitions, and on 7 August, a power surge occurred, blaming.

The Russian Ambassador blamed Kyiv for refusing to sign a trilateral document issued by IAEA, stressing that Moscow strictly complies with the IAEA Director General’s seven principles.

Afghanistan still needs immense humanitarian assistance: UN

UNITED NATIONS, Aug 12 (DNA): Despite an unprecedented scale-up in assistance in Afghanistan over the past year, immense needs still exist and the future looks bleak, the UN humanitarian affairs office, OCHA, said on Thursday.

Following the Taliban takeover last August, UN agencies and their partners remained in Afghanistan, providing aid to nearly 23 million people, or nearly 94 per cent of all those who require support, said OCHA , which is based in Geneva.

Humanitarians expanded their operations to reach communities across all 34 provinces, and their work has saved lives and even successfully averted a famine last winter.

Allocations from two UN humanitarian funds also played a pivotal role in preventing a collapse of the health and education sectors by ensuring essential workers continue to be paid, it added.

However, even with this massive response, the scale of needs far outstrips the capacity of aid partners to meet them, the UN’s Humanitarian Coordinator for Afghanistan, Dr. Ramiz Alakbarov, said on Thursday.

He stressed that this “tragic reality” will continue unless a functioning economy and banking system is restored, girls are officially able to return to school, and women and girls can meaningfully and safely participate in all aspects of social, political and economic life, including humanitarian work.

“History has shown us time and time again, that we ignore the red flags of today at tomorrow’s peril,”  Alakbarov said in a statement.

“And in Afghanistan today, the red flags are both multiple and diverse – from devastating climate projections, to an economy which hangs in the balance, and growing restrictions on women and girls which exclude them from society”.

Humanitarian action has been essential in keeping the Afghan people alive, maintaining basic services, and shoring up the economy at a time when no alternatives have been available.

Some 7.7 million citizens, including three million women and girls, have received healthcare support this year, which has contributed to reduced excess maternal, neonatal and child deaths.

Additional humanitarian assistance has been provided in the form of emergency cash to cover needs such as food, shelter, protection and health, and also cash for work and livelihoods support, thus injecting much-needed liquidity into the economy.

However, OCHA warned that the future looks increasingly bleak in the absence of concerted efforts to address structural drivers of need and vulnerability.

Today, roughly 25 million Afghans are now living in poverty. Furthermore, as many as 900,000 jobs may be lost this year as businesses struggle to stay afloat, and women and girls remain shut out of secondary school and the formal economy.

Alakbarov called for greater commitment to meeting the life-saving needs and supporting vulnerable communities.

“People in Afghanistan have long experienced financial poverty, but are now increasingly condemned to a life filled with poverty of hope and aspiration. We cannot let this happen,” he said.

Trump declines to answer questions in New York civil probe

New York, Aug 10: Donald Trump on Wednesday declined to answer questions under oath in New York over alleged fraud at his family business, as legal pressures pile on the former president whose house was raided by the FBI just two days ago.

Trump said he had “no choice” but to invoke the fifth amendment — which allows individuals to remain silent under questioning to protect against self-incrimination — during a deposition at the New York attorney general’s office.

In a statement apparently issued after the deposition began, Trump said, “I declined to answer the questions under the rights and privileges afforded to every citizen under the United States Constitution,” adding he took the advice from his legal counsel.

“I once asked, ‘If you’re innocent, why are you taking the Fifth Amendment?’ Now I know the answer to that question,” he continued.

“When your family, your company, and all the people in your orbit have become the targets of an unfounded, politically motivated Witch Hunt supported by lawyers, prosecutors, and the Fake News Media, you have no choice.”

The deposition follows an extraordinary Federal Bureau of Investigation search earlier this week on Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, signaling an escalation of legal probes into the 45th president.

Trump took aim at the search in his statement Wednesday, saying, “The current Administration and many prosecutors in this Country have lost all moral and ethical bounds of decency.”

He arrived early Wednesday in a convoy of cars guarded by the secret service at the offices of New York Attorney General Letitia James, whose investigation is one of several active probes into the brash billionaire’s business practices and other actions.

Want to see Pak army a strong institution: Imran

Says efforts afoot to crush PTI, to disqualify him; fears conspiracy being hatched to pit PTI against army

Khayam Abbasi

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan said that a conspiracy was being hatched to pit the country’s largest political party against the military, which was also part of the US-backed regime change conspiracy.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, he said that the regime change conspiracy has not ended and impression is being given that PTI is against the Pakistan Army, which is extremely dangerous and can damage the country.

Imran Khan warned the nation that the next phase of regime change conspiracy would be strict as the local abettors have decided to show muscles to crush and intimidate people.

He said that they chalked out a plan to crush the PTI in cahoots with Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) under the foreign backed plan because the opponents could not win the elections against PTI; hence they wanted to knock out PTI on technical grounds.

Imran Khan further said that the foreign conspiracy was made successful by local Mir Jafar and Mir Sadiq, as when he was ousted as prime minister, celebrations started in India and Israel.

He said that that India had a problem that the PTI government and the Army were on the same page but ironically today these people ‘are labelling us traitors’.

Imran Khan said that during the Mumbai attacks, Asif Zardari made a statement that Pakistan’s DG ISI should be sent to Mumbai.

He also revealed that the PPP co-chairman had sent a message to then US administration through the former ambassador Hussain Haqqani requesting them to save him from Pakistan Army. “Now, it seems as though we are anti-military and they are patriotic,” he said, added his party wanted to see Pakistan Army strong. Every effort has been made to crush PTI but they did not sit silently, he added.

He stated that Nawaz Sharif revealed the name of the Mumbai’s attacker that he was a Pakistani, adding that it was said in Dawn Leaks that the Pakistani army was involved in terrorism.

He said that India called Raheel Sharif a terrorist, but Nawaz Sharif invited Modi to the wedding.

Talking about foreign funding, Imran Khan stated that PTI started regular political fund-raising and PTI submitted the identity cards of 40,000 donors in 2012. He termed the foreign funding case as a tool to disintegrate PTI and said that the case had no value which would be established when any court would peruse the decision.

He said that the ECP knew that PPP and PML-N parties raised money illegally and this was the reason why it would not investigate them, adding that the day the matter was investigated by courts, it would be proven that only PTI raised money lawfully in the country, as PPP and PML-N did not have any donor detail.

Imran Khan went on to say that the opponents were trying to disqualify him on the certificate and Tosha Khana case; however he added that all the past prime ministers and presidents and people appointed to higher ranks got gifts, including the army chief received the gifts. He demanded that all of them should be investigated to ascertain the fact, adding that Asif Zardari took three and Nawaz Sharif took one expensive car from Tosha Khana. They wanted to implicate me in the case by doing my character assassination, he added.

He said that the shutdown of private TV was a part of this plan, as they wanted to spread so much fear that no one could air his point of view.

Imran Khan said that Western newspapers reported that drone attack in Afghanistan was carried out by using Pakistan’s soil. “I don’t know whether the air bases of Pakistan have been given again or not, but Pakistan has already paid huge price in the war against terrorism,” he added.

The PTI Chairman also raised concerns over rumours of a deal between Pakistan and the West over using the country’s airspace, warning that any such thing would only lead to further destruction and loss of life in the country.

He went on that if Pakistan became a part of that agenda again just a few dollars, the result would be the same, adding that they would get trapped in a conflict again and the loss would be colossal.

He expressed grave concerns about the rise of TTP in Swat and adjoining areas, adding that PTI leaders have started receiving threats from TTP militants, adding that to him; it seemed like another conspiracy to weaken PTI.

Talking about Shahbaz Gill’s arrest, he said that no action was taken against PML-N leaders Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz, and others when they spoke against the army. He said that Shahbaz Gill should have been allowed to clarify himself before the court if he had said something wrong.

“My life and death is Pakistan, I will not run away, hence we are more concerned about the country and want the forces to be a strong institution,” he added.

He said that PTI has street power to block the entire country, but they would not resort to it but instead stage peaceful protests just because they did not want to damage the country.

Imran Khan expressed his apprehension that these few people were making such a plan for their personal interest; hence he was worried that no such decision should be taken which compromised the national security. He reiterated that the only solution to the prevailing crisis in the country was free and fair elections.
