Ambassador Asad Majeed in Brussels briefs Int’l NGO’s about floods in Pakistan

Brussels, SEP 21: The Embassy of Pakistan Brussels arranged a briefing for the Belgian and International humanitarian relief organizations and INGOs at the chancery today. The purpose of the briefing was to appraise the International humanitarian relief Organizations about the situation resulting from floods across the country and to coordinate the provision of relief assistance from Belgium for the flood-affected population.

The Briefing was attended by the representatives from the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations, EU External Action Service, Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, EU-CORD, MSF, Norwegian Refugees Council, Red Cross Flanders, Handicap International, ADRA, ACT Alliance, VOICE as well as the media persons.

The Ambassador of Pakistan to Belgium, Luxembourg and the European Union Dr. Asad Majeed Khan briefed the participants about the unprecedented devastation caused by the climate-induced disaster in Pakistan which has badly affected over 33 million people.

The Ambassador indicated that more than 1569 people including 555 children had lost their lives and 12,860 people got injured including 4000 children, due to the floods.

Further elaborating on the situation, Ambassador Khan explained that losses caused by the recent floods are much more than the 2010 floods. He highlighted that as per the initial assessments almost 12716 km of roads, 374 bridges and over 2 million houses have been destroyed and 998,407 livestock have been lost due to the heavy rains in 116 affected districts, including 84 districts officially notified as ‘calamity hit’ across Pakistan. He added that the calamity will have a long-term adverse impact on food security, health, as well as the economy in Pakistan.

The Ambassador underscored that under the direct supervision of the Federal Government a massive relief operation is underway across the country. Ambassador Khan mentioned that given the scale of the challenge, the Government is reaching out to friendly countries, donors, and international financial institutions for their support and cooperation.

He appealed to the international community to join hands with the Government to save lives and provide much-needed supplies.

Speaking on the occasion, the participants assured the Ambassador of their support and agreed to further mobilize their respective organizations/communities to raise resources for the flood-affected people.

Every year the member state of United Nation Organization delivered speeches in the last week of September. Mostly these speeches could be delivered by the presidents and prime Ministers of the states. The 15 Minutes speeches could be delivered on international issues. Generally in this debate the issues like war, peace, foreign affairs, public health, education, Poverty and economy could be discussed.However all these speeches could be delivered in international perspective.

There are 193 members state of the UNO since its inception (24th Ocotber, 1945).Latter on two other countries like Eastern Taimur and Northern Sudan were added but is in transitional stage. In the current 77th session of UNGA the prime Minister of Pakistan has an opportunity,and honor to represent his nation in the wider perspective of international standards with outstanding approach and vision. Pakistan being member of the world community has always respected the decisions from UNO and proved that it wants peace, tranquility and prosperity in the world scenario of war and terrorism.

Since 2001, Pakistan has faced many challenges in the war of terror and stood firmly to save humanity and shatter the bonds of discrimination on the basis of creed, cast, colour, religion and culture. The Prime Minister of Pakistan Mian Shehbaz Sharif will deliver his speech on 23rd Septmebr,2022 positively .The current speech of Prime Minister of Pakistan will no doubt pave a way in the international community for its long and outstanding problems(Politically,socially,economically)even. Especially, the recent humanitariancrisis  of floods which has undaunted 1/3rdportion of Pakistan needs proper attention of the international community and also physical,technical and financial support to overcome the problem.The damagesoccurred to Pakistan are numerous however,the human losses of more than 1500, the destruction of infrastructure,washing of fertile land,cereals has created panic in the society and increased the level of poverty.Just imagine more than 4 million people have lost their houses,property, businesses etc. It could be his extraordinary approach towards the problem and the way the Prime Minister will presents the things to international forum.It will be the passion, vision of Mian Shehbaz Sharif to win the hearts of social activists,IFS, philanthropist and world leaders to draw their  attention and made progress for grant in aid and donations from the members state openly to sustain life.

Although the speech the Prime Ministerwill delivered at this junction has raised expectations of the people of Pakistan .So it could be innovative speech rather than traditional one. Moreover it should be a part of his exposure, experience and diplomatic relation with outstanding performanceto create favorable environment for achieving the goals and targets.The best speechesonce the prominent leaders had delivered in GeneralAssembly turn to be historic innature. In the current situation Pakistan is facing multidimensional problems including the high intensity of floods destruction due to climatic changes. Pakistan being member of the climate organization believes strongly on reduction of carbonemission and following the international standards and procedures in coming decade.The preparation to attend the COP- 27 conference on climate change Pakistan will definitely contribute a lot to save the humanity from any other catastrophe.Although Pakistan has only 1 % carbon emission yet it is standing on no 8th as the most vulnerable countries to climatic change.The Prime Minister in his speech will definitelytouches the philanthropistworldwide to combat with the recent floods and contribution to assess the people in trouble with maximum technical and financial support.

The prime Minster will include the most chronic and everlasting issue of Kashmir dispute and will demand of the world to solve it according to the resolutions of UNO and according to the wishes of Kashmiris people through plebiscites as promised in 1948.The Prime Minister will request the powerful countries for support and negotiation of the issue in favor of innocent Kashmirisand all those who had been captured, exploited by dominant races through conspiracy and subjugation.The Prime Minister will assure the world of the contribution and services Pakistan rendered in promoting peace and tranquility in the region and uprooting terrorism even at the cost of their blood.The sacrifices of our defending forces in the line of control against terrorism and the way they were brutally martyred for the sake of humanity and peace shall be prioritized in the speech.It is a good opportunity that PM will discuss the everlasting issues with group of 77 and China.At the same time the councils of foreign Ministers Pakistan will serve as the voice for all the Muslims of the world for development,prosperity,human rights and sustainable development goals according to the UN charter.

ISLAMABAD, SEP 21 /DNA/ – The Embassy of Nepal in Islamabad hosted a reception to celebrate the Constitution Day and the National Day of Nepal.

Welcoming the guests to the event, Tapas Adhikari, Ambassador of Nepal to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, highlighted the importance of the day in Nepal’s history and its role in national unity in a country of diversity like Nepal.

The Ambassador further said that the Constitution embodies the federal system of governance and democratic norms and values as well as principles of human rights and human dignity. After seven years of the promulgation of the Constitution, “the foundation the Constitution laid is getting even stronger towards fulfilling the long-cherished aspirations of Nepali people for progress and prosperity”, he added.

Talking about the bilateral ties the Ambassador said, the relations between Nepal and Pakistan have always been cordial and friendly. The establishment of diplomatic relations in 1960 further strengthened the bond of friendship and cooperation. The relations are strong based on mutual trust and cooperation.

Both countries are working together at various bilateral, regional and multilateral forums to promote friendship and cooperation. As founder members of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), both counties have full faith in the SAARC Charter and committed to its objectives.

Nepal and Pakistan are working together on the agendas of sustainable development, climate change and environment protection.

On the occasion, Ambassador Adhikari expressed his condolences to the Government and people of Pakistan for the damage caused by the recent massive Monsoon floods in Pakistan. He also said that Nepal and Pakistan have been working closely to support each other during the times of such crisis.

Highlighting Nepal’s natural and cultural attractions, Ambassador Adhikari invited all to visit Nepal to experience the land of beauty and discovery.

He said Nepal has always been a hub of mountain and adventure tourism. Our mountains, snow fed rivers, and topography have always fascinated people across the world. Peoples culture, tourism and hospitality have made Nepal a center of tourism in the global tourism map.

Like other industries, the tourism industry also received a setback during the COVID pandemic. Now the situation is improving. Tourists are again coming back to Nepal.

On this occasion, I would like to invite our Pakistani and other friends to visit Nepal to experience the beauty of the land and to taste Nepali hospitality. Nepal has the best hospitality industry in South Asia’.

Speaking as Chief Guest. Khurram Dastgir Khan, Minister for Energy of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, expressed congratulations and best wishes on behalf of the Government of Pakistan. The Chief Guest also highlighted the excellent state of bilateral relations between Nepal and Pakistan.

Consultation of National and Provincial TIP Committees

ISLAMABAD: Under the EU-funded GLO.ACT – Global Action to Address Trafficking in Persons and the Smuggling of Migrants (GLO.ACT – Asia and the Middle East), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in collaboration with the Federal Investigation Agency, organized a high-level consultation workshop for National and Provincial Anti-Human Trafficking Committees on 21 September 2022.

This high-level national consultation aimed to provide an opportunity for all the members of National, provincial, and district-level anti-trafficking committees to meet and deliberate on their objectives. There were three main objectives of the consultation. First, there is a lack of understanding of trafficking by law enforcement officers. Secondly, there is a tendency to consider irregular migrants as offenders only but they are also victims. Thirdly, there was a lack of coordination among relevant actors at the federal, provincial, and district levels.

The lack of coordination and understanding of the distinction between trafficking, irregular migration, and smuggling of migrants was well brought out in the consultation. This consultation gave a more holistic framework for coordinated approaches.

During his welcome remarks, Dr. Jeremy Milsom, Representative UNODC Country Office Pakistan, said “Curbing human trafficking and migrants smuggling requires a coordinated response at all levels. Realizing this fact, the government of Pakistan notified provincial and district-level TIP Coordination committees earlier this year. We, as UNODC, are very pleased with this action by Pakistan and commend the efforts. We hope that there would be great coordination and synergy amongst all the stakeholders and that the activities will be conducted in a coordinated matter at all levels including Federal, Provincial, and District levels.”.

He further added, “The foundation for curbing TIP and SOM must be the Palermo Convention on Transnational Organized Crime, to which Pakistan is a signatory. Our approach needs to balance progressive and proactive law enforcement with activities that combat the market forces driving human trafficking and migrant smuggling in Pakistan.”.

During his speech, the Director-General FIA, Mr. Mohsin Hassan Butt, said, “We are improving our identification of potential victims and offering greater support to those who are victims of this abhorrent crime. Trafficking is a gross violation of a person’s basic rights and dignity and disproportionately affects the most vulnerable, especially women and children. We are working jointly with UNODC and the European Union to enhance support to the victims of trafficking and vulnerable smuggled migrants. Our National Action Plan to combat human trafficking and migrant smuggling is victim-centered and addresses the gaps related to it”.

He further added, “We are enhancing our ability to act early and to help other relevant stakeholders within Pakistan to deal with the issue. Police are mandated to investigate crimes of internal trafficking and other departments including labour, child protection, women’s protection, and social services are mandated to provide protection and assistance services to the victims”.

Ms. Mio Sato, Chief of Mission, IOM Pakistan, during her opening remarks congratulated the Government of Pakistan and Federal Investigation Agency for adopting comprehensive counter-trafficking measures, that are also in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM). She added that “It is critical to strengthen partnerships and collaboration amongst local and national stakeholders in order to ensure efforts are sustainable and holistic. As implementing partner for the GLO.ACT project, IOM has been supporting the FIA on strengthening response on victim protection and assistance and remains available to extend full support to the national, provincial and district-level anti-trafficking committees”.

Eric Hann, Migration Liasion Officer said as part of the EU Strategy on Combatting Trafficking in Human Beings 2021-2025, we are committed to step up cooperation with countries of origin and transit. This is crucial to ensure a comprehensive approach that includes demand reduction; law enforcement and criminal justice response; and assistance and support to victims, in line with priorities that apply both inside and outside the EU. Through our initiatives like GLO.ACT, we encourage capacity building, prevention, protection of victims, and the dismantling of criminal networks.

Minister for Interior Rana Sana Ullah Khan said that our government has a strong political will and commitment to move forward with the work against trafficking in persons.  FIA has already developed a National Action Plan against Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants (2021–2025) which aims to promote the detection of trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants, improve the position of victims and intensify the enforcement of criminal liability.

He also said that if the Action Plan is implemented in its true letter and spirit, this would bring trafficking in Persons cases to ZERO in Pakistan.

The Minister urged Director General FIA and other provincial bodies to work in closer coordination with each and UNODC to achieve the objective of eliminating Trafficking in Persons from Pakistan.

Senior representatives of the FIA, UNODC, the European Union, IOM and conveners, co-conveners, and members of Punjab provincial and district level committees attended the high-level consultation. Members from civil society organizations and NGOs involved in relevant fields, UNHCR, UNWOMEN, and UNICEF, also participated.

The Global Action against Trafficking in Persons and the Smuggling of Migrants – Asia and the Middle East (GLO.ACT-Asia and the Middle East) is a four-year (2018-2022), €12 million joint initiative by the European Union (EU) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) being implemented in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in up to five countries: Islamic Republic of Afghanistan (Afghanistan), Islamic Republic of Iran (I.R. of Iran), Republic of Iraq (Iraq), Islamic Republic of Pakistan (Pakistan). GLO.ACT-Bangladesh is a parallel initiative also financed by the EU and implemented with IOM.

The project builds on a global community of practice set in motion in GLO.ACT 2015-2019 and assists governmental authorities and civil society organizations in targeted, innovative, and demand-driven interventions: sustaining effective strategy and policy development, legislative review and harmonization, capability development, and regional and trans-regional cooperation. The project also provides direct assistance to victims of human trafficking and vulnerable migrants through the strengthening of identification, referral, and protection mechanisms. The project is fully committed to mainstreaming Human Rights and Gender Equality considerations across all of its activities. 

ALEX HALES, HARRY BROOK LEAD ENGLAND PAST PAKISTAN IN OPENING T20

KARACHI: Midway thro­ugh their pursuit of 159 in their first match in Pakistan since 2005, England’s Alex Hales made his first mistake. The explosive opener, playing his first international match after three years, played a flat shot off Pakistan spinner Usman Qadir straight into the hands of Shan Masood at mid-wicket but got an instant reprieve as the debutant spilled it.

England did lose Ben Duckett two balls later, but the arriving Harry Brook carried his team across the finish line with four balls and six wickets to spare in the first of the seven Twenty20 Interna­tionals here at the National Stadium on Tuesday.

The right-hander, who won the Pakistan Super League with Lahore Qalandars earlier this year, ended up unbeaten with 42 off 25, hitting seven fours in his knock.

With the comfort of having Hales at the other end, Brook ensured England kept the asking rate under control and launched his match-winning onslaught with a straight hit off an Usman full toss in the 13th.

After negotiating slow left-armer Mohammad Nawaz with care in the next over, Brook plundered pacer Shahnawaz Dahani for two fours before Hales celebrated his survival by bludgeoning the right-armer down the ground for another boundary.

Brook showed no respect for Pakistan pace spearhead Naseem Shah as well, when he crafted three boundaries off the right-armer in the following over.

Fast bowler Haris Rauf did get Hales in the 17th, but that was too late for Pakistan with England needing just 16 off 18. A boundary by England’s stand-in skipper Moeen Ali and two more by Brook took England over the line.

Hales, who managed 53 off 40, had set the base for England earlier in the innings.

The right-hander, who plays for Islamabad United in the PSL, gave the visitors momentum in the powerplay despite losing fellow opener Phil Salt to Dahani in the third over, thanks to an acrobatic fielding effort at square-leg by Haider Ali.

Hales put up short partnerships of 34 off 23 and 34 off 27 with Dawid Malan and Duckett respectively before the duo was undone by Usman to allow Brook to arrive in the middle.

Unlike England, the better part of Pakistan’s innings came too early.

The hosts’ struggles against spin and their over reliance on the openers came to light once again as they failed to convert a blistering start by captain Babar Azam (31 off 24) and Mohammad Rizwan (68 off 46).

The Pakistan captain showed the elegance and class he is known for, starting the innings with a whip across his legs for a boundary.

The packed stands at the National Stadium chanted Babar’s name as he dispatc­hed Sam Curran through the leg-side again before Rizwan grabbed the crowd’s attention when he cut David Willey with utter dominance before whipping one through square-leg against his Multan Sultans team-mate.

The Pakistan openers kept scoring freely, only until England leg-spinner Adil Rashid bamboozled Babar with an unplayable googly that castled the right-hander in the 10th over, leaving Pakistan at 87-1 by the end of it.

Despite the in-form Rizwan was still at the crease, Pakistan’s run-rate dipped with spinners operating from both ends.

Rizwan’s six against Rashid in the 12th over was Pakistan’s only boundary scored between the dismissals of Babar and Haider, who came into bat and number three before getting caught at deep square leg off Curran in the 14th.

The incoming Shan struck a boundary through extra cover off Moeen Ali in the 15th before Rizwan was undone by a stumping three balls later after adding 68 off 46.

Shan’s debut was spoiled when the left-hander fell to Rashid in the next over with Pakistan at 127-4 by the end of the 16th over.

It left Iftikhar Ahmed and Mohammad Nawaz with the job to provide the final flourish.

Iftikhar did raise hopes of that when he muscled Willey over long-on for a big six, only to see Nawaz losing his stumps to Luke Wood’s pace and swing five balls later.

Wood eventually accounted for Iftikhar (28) in the final over, but after getting hit for another maximum before the pacer dismissed tailender Naseem.

The sub-par score eventually meant Pakistan were unable to celebrate England’s long-awaited return to the country with a victor

Pakistan flood-borne diseases could get ‘out of control’ as deaths rise

At least nine more people have died from water-borne diseases in flood-hit areas of Pakistan, officials said on Tuesday, warning they risked losing control of the spread of infections in a crisis that the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) described as “beyond bleak”.

An intense and long monsoon dumped around three times as much rain on Pakistan than on average in recent weeks, causing major flooding which killed 1,559 people, including 551 children and 318 women, according to the disaster management agency.

This figure does not include those killed by disease in the aftermath.

Hundreds of thousands of people displaced by the floods are living in the open and as flood waters spread over hundreds of kilometres start to recede, which officials say may take two to six months, stagnant waters have led to diseases like malaria, dengue fever, skin and eye infections and acute diarrhoea.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has said the surge in diseases has the potential for a “second disaster”.

In Sindh, the region worst hit by the floods, the provincial government said nine people died of gastroenteritis, acute diarrhoea and suspected malaria on Monday, bringing the total number of deaths from diseases to 318 since July 1.

Over 2.7 million people have been treated for water-borne diseases at makeshift or mobile hospitals set up in flood-hit regions since July 1, it said, with 72,000 people treated at these facilities on Monday alone.

Sindh govt urges people to exercise caution

In a video message earlier today, Sindh Health Minister Azra Pechuho urged people to adopt safety measures against vector-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue as the death toll from catastrophic floods across the country neared 1,600.

“The government is doing anti-dengue sprays across the province but there are some precautions that people need to take at home as well,” she said in a video message.

“Apply mosquito repellant lotions on your body. Put mosquito coils on the entrance of the house at dawn and dusk. Don’t keep water open, make sure you cover it where it is in utensils or in buckets. Spray your houses,” Pechuho recommended.

She said that in case of fever, paracetamol and panadol should be consumed. In case of a low platelet count, go to a hospital immediately, the minister pointed out.

Pechuho added that a 24/7 emergency helpline (021- 99223374) has been launched by the Sindh government to cater to internally displaced persons and those affected by the floods.

Meanwhile, at a press conference later in the day, Sindh government spokesperson Murtaza Wahab said that Sindh saw a peak of 426 dengue cases on September 15.

“The health department and administration together worked and as a result, 221 cases were reported in the last 24 hours,” he revealed, adding that the caseload has effectively halved.

Regarding malaria, Wahab said that Sindh has reported 148,589 cases of the disease since the floods.

ADB announces ‘significant’ relief, rehabilitation package for flood-hit Pakistan

Earlier today, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) said that it was working “quickly” to provide a “significant” relief and rehabilitation package following catastrophic floods in the country.

In a statement, the ADB said that the package is designed to “support people, livelihoods, and infrastructure immediately and in the long-term”.

For the short and medium-term, the bank said it would use ongoing projects to repair damaged infrastructure, including roads and irrigation infrastructure, and to support the development and financial stability of the agriculture sector to boost food security.

“We’re also processing countercyclical support to help the poor and vulnerable, especially women and children, weather the impacts of food prices and other external shocks,” the ADB said.

Long-term, we’ll prioritise projects that support post-flood reconstruction and strengthen climate and disaster resilience, it added.

“We will provide more details of our new assistance package when it is finalised. We will work closely with the government and other international agencies to help rebuild the lives and livelihoods of the more than 33 million people affected by the disaster,” the ADB concluded, adding that it stood with the people of the country.

The announcement came as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in New York to participate in the United Nations General Assembly where he is expected to highlight Pakistan’s climate catastrophe.

“Reached NY a few hours ago to tell Pakistan’s story to the world, a story of deep anguish and pain arising out of a massive human tragedy caused by floods. In my address at UNGA and bilateral meetings, I will present Pakistan’s case on issues that call for world’s immediate attention,” he said.

ISLAMABAD: Russia is ready to provide Pakistan with gasoline on a delayed payment basis, media reported on Tuesday. This major development comes after last week’s meetings of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Samarkand, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit.

Matters regarding oil, gas and wheat supplies to Pakistan from Moscow were discussed during the three meetings.

The report added that the US has also not opposed the proposed deal openly amid Pakistan’s severe economic crisis caused by deadly floods.

Addressing a press conference on September 18, Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif revealed that Russia proposed that its gas pipeline infrastructure which was in place till Central Asian states could be extended to Pakistan through Afghanistan.

The two leaders also expressed commitment to expand bilateral cooperation between their countries in all areas of mutual benefit, Khawaja Asif said.

‘Gas pipeline feasible’

On September 15, Russian President Vladimir Putin told PM Shehbaz Sharif that the installation of a pipeline for the supply of gas to Pakistan from Moscow is possible.

President Putin also expressed solidarity and support for the flood-hit population in Pakistan after he was informed about the devastating impact of the climate-induced calamity.

PM Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to work closely with Russia to expand and strengthen cooperation across all areas, including food security, trade and investment, energy, defence, and security.

Speaking about regional politics, PM Shehbaz said that both Pakistan and Russia had vital stakes in a peaceful and stable Afghanistan, adding that Pakistan was committed to supporting all regional and international efforts to stabilise its neighbouring country.

ISLAMABAD, SEP 20 (DNA) — Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif Tuesday attended the opening of the high-level general debate of the 77th Session of UN General Assembly being held in the general assembly hall. The prime minister will also spend a busy day in New York. He also met with the French President Emanuel Macron on the sidelines of the Session. Similarly he met with the Austrian Chancellor as well.

Earlier, the prime minister reached UN Headquarters to attend a welcome reception hosted by the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres for the Heads of States/Governments participating in the 77th Session of UN General Assembly (UNGA77). During the reception, the prime minister interacted with Prime Minister of New Zealand Jecinda Ardern.

Besides this, the prime minister will hold bilateral meetings with President of the Republic of France Emmanuel Macron, Federal Chancellor of the Republic of Austria Karl Nehammer, President of Spain Pedro Sanchez Perez-Castejon and President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Sayyed Ebrahim Raisi.

In the afternoon, the prime minister will visit ‘The Times Centre’ for an interview with the New York Time’s editorial board. In the evening, the prime minister will be called on by John Kerry, US Special Envoy for Climate Change. 

FIA summons Shaukat Tarin, Taimur Jhagra in audio leak case

ISLAMABAD, SEP 20 (DNA) — The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Tuesday summoned former finance minister and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leader Shaukat Tarin and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Minister for Finance Taimur Khan Jhagra in audio leak case tomorrow.

An audio of a telephonic conversation between Tarin and Jhagra had gone viral not long ago in which the former could be heard telling the latter to write a letter to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) against the government of Pakistan ahead of the country’s deal with the international money lending organisation.

The coalition government tried to portray it as an effort by the PTI to scuttle the expected agreement with the Fund, which was round the corner in those days. =DNA
