Anjum Nisar says initial economic losses from floods to surpass $10-12b

ISLAMABAD, SEP 4 /DNA/ – The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry’s Businessmen Panel (BMP) on Sunday warned that a food crisis could be imminent followed by the floods, which have caused widespread devastation, calling the world to work with the government to mobilize resources for immediate response to support the country’s relief efforts.

FPCCI former president and BMP Chairman Mian Anjum Nisar said that the initial economic losses from floods in Pakistan could surpass $10-12 billion, as unprecedented flash floods caused by abnormal monsoon rains have washed away crops, infrastructure and bridges, killing thousands and affecting more than 30 millions.

He asked the government to identify priority needs, including food security, agriculture and livestock, health, water, sanitation, hygiene, shelter, and nonfood items.

The country’s agricultural sector, especially in Sindh and Balochistan, has been hit the hardest with the finance ministry also recently warning that production of major crops would be affected due to the floods. He said 100% of the cotton crop in Sindh, which accounts for30% of the crop in Pakistan, has been destroyed, which amounts to losses of at least $1 billion, which will cascade through the economy, he said.

He said it might take five years to rebuild and rehabilitate the South Asian nation of 200 million people, which will be facing an acute challenge of food shortage.

We need to work continuously with federal and provincial authorities to identify how we can help financing the growing needs as the extent of the disaster evolves, and mobilize further finding for the large relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts that are to come in the recovery phase.

Presently, country needs billions grant to support the government of Pakistan’s emergency relief efforts amid widespread floods across the country.

He said that the whole business community stands with the people of Pakistan during these difficult times, as we are committed to working with the government and other development partners to help Pakistan overcome the devastating impact of this natural disaster and provide immediate relief to affected families.

We require teams to also help assess the damage caused by floods to draw up plans to support longer term rehabilitation efforts and strengthen communities’ climate resilience, he said.

Heavy rains across Pakistan have triggered flash floods, landslides, and glacial lake outbursts. In July, the country received more than 60 percent of average annual monsoon rainfall in just three weeks. Over 30 million people are estimated to have been affected by the floods with more than 1100 deaths reported while almost half a million people are currently in relief camps. Pakistan has been ravaged by torrential rains resulting in flash floods from north to south, causing large-scale infrastructure damage, as 20% of the sugarcane crop in Sindh has been damaged, which makes up 10% of the entire country’s sugarcane production, he said. More than half of Sindh’s onion and tomato crop has been destroyed and 80% of the rice crop has also been destroyed, which will adversely affect farmers in the province.

He said that over 800,000 livestock perished due to floods, mostly in Balochistan.

He said that already inflation rate in August has jumped to a 47-years-high level of 27.3% due to the government’s decision to increase prices of electricity and fuel, as it burdens consumers of the petrol even more than what is required under a deal with the International Monetary Fund. Quoting the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics he said that the year-on-year inflation rate remained at 27.3% in August, the highest rate since May of 1975 when the reading had been recorded at 27.8%.

Transport group inflation rate was recorded over 63% on the back of petrol prices that saw an 84% increase, followed by one-third average increase in prices of perishable food items. The cost of electricity also went up by 123% in August compared to a year ago due to increase in tariffs on account of annual tariff adjustment and monthly fuel price adjustment, severely hitting the budget of the middle-income group.

The adverse impacts of the floods and consequent disruption in food supplies will be visible in the inflation reading for the month of September, which may push the rate far higher than that of August.

He said that Pakistan has been facing a boom-and-bust cycle every now and then. The country’s taxation system is import-based, as 52% of the collection is through ports in customs duties, sales tax etc.

Imran Khan hints at another long march towards Islamabad

BAHAWALPUR – Former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan hinted on Saturday at another long march to Islamabad if the coalition government continues to use negative tactics against his political party.

Addressing a public rally in Bahawalpur, the former PM said the country is destroyed when the president, prime minister, and ministers commit corruption, Zardari and Sharif stole the country’s money and took it out. “I am preparing you for real freedom. We all have to free the country from these thieves. A revolution like Imam Khomeini’s or a revolution brought through elections is two ways of change in the country. The most terrible disease in the country is Zardari,” Imran said.

The PTI chairman added that debts are increasing and they are leading the country to darkness, adding that general elections are the only way to tackle economic, political instability. This group of thieves is taking the country into the swamp.

“We collected 5.5 billion in three and a half hours of the telethon. If overseas Pakistanis invest in the country, then there will be no need to extend our hands to the IMF. We have to fix the justice system in the country,” Imran said.

“Pakistani nation is standing with me from Karachi to Gilgit-Baltistan, I am going to Sindh. The people there are also with me to defeat the Zardari mafia. I am not doing any act which will cause any harm to the country,” the former PM added.

Real freedom movement unstoppable: Farrukh

Says surge in prices at breakneck speed compounded public woes

ISLAMABAD: /DNA/ – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Central Secretary Information Farrukh Habib made it clear that the real freedom movement would continue under all circumstances because it was inevitable to free the country from the clutches of these thieves and conspirators.
Farrukh Habib said on Saturday that all these courtiers and criminal elements of PML-N were scared of Chairman PTI Imran Khan.
He said that PML-N being a political party did nothing for the flood victims hitherto, adding that after facing humiliating defeat and ruining Punjab, Hamza Shehbaz fled the country.
Farrukh Habib said that Hamza during his occupation of Punjab did nothing except spreading political unrest and chaos in the province, adding Hamza was not concerned about the public woes as it was evident from the fact that he neither visited once to the flood victims nor did he do any relief work.
He went on to say that PTI workers along with Imran Khan were busy in rehabilitation and relief work for the flood affected people across the country, adding that PTI governments were engaged in relief and rescue operations day and night.
Farrukh Habib stated that the huge donation in the telethon for the flood victims clear reflected the public trust on Imran Khan.

He said that the government was busy making cases against Imran Khan, as they were nothing to do with public plight.
Farrukh Habib reminded that the Meteorological Department predicted the flood two and a half months ago but the imported rulers were enjoying sweet slumber.

He said that the truth would prevail and the people would rid the country of these thieves soon.

President Tokayev’s address to nation opens new political milestone in Kazakhstan’s History

Nur-Sultan, SEP 3: Another Presidential Address opens a fundamentally new political milestone in the history of the country. The head of state is setting qualitatively different standards for the system of power. It is the utmost transparency in the adoption of the most important political decisions, constant renewal, and open competition.

The President’s decision to make the entire electoral schedule public is an unprecedented step for Kazakhstan’s political practice.

The launch of the entire election cycle is conditioned by the need for a radical reboot of our political system and is fully consistent with the rationale of the constitutional reform supported by the majority of citizens in the June referendum.

The consecutive holding of presidential elections followed by the election of deputies of the Mazhilis (the lower chamber of the Parliament) and maslikhats (local representative bodies) will allow focusing on the solution of urgent and strategic tasks on socio-economic development of the country. In other words, the accumulated rhythm of the country’s modernization will not be disturbed.

The growing geostrategic tensions and turbulence in the world economy are a strong factor in favor of holding early elections. The unpredictability of the dynamics of world processes multiplies the risks and challenges not only for individual states, but for entire regions.

Another central initiative of yesterday’s address is the head of state’s proposal to limit the presidential mandate to a single term of seven years without the right to re-election.

This proposal is a thoroughly considered decision, which, if approved by the Parliament, will determine the future of Kazakhstan’s political system.

In this case, the election of one person as President for only one seven-year term is a political innovation, which now has no precedent in the near and distant surrounding of Kazakhstan. The norm of a one-time presidency is primarily aimed at the long-term stabilization of the political system, eliminating the risks of power monopolization and strengthening the basic principles of democracy.

The initiative on a single presidential term is a logical progression of steps already taken to finally move away from the super-presidential model. These include the non-partisanship of the head of state, the ban on his relatives holding positions in government agencies and state-owned companies, and the redistribution of some presidential powers in favor of other institutions of power. The introduction of a single presidential term thus closes the process of institutionalizing a presidential republic with an optimal balance of power.

The initiative to hold early elections to the Mazhilis and maslikhats of all levels in the first half of next year also comes from the rationale of the political modernization program.

Elections in single-mandate districts under a mixed electoral system that is being implemented will become an important factor in improving political culture in the country and a powerful tool for articulating the interests of citizens at the local level.

The electoral legislation will soon work according to new rules. The registration procedure for political parties will be simplified, which is already contributing to the emergence of new parties, new faces in politics, and increased political competition. And this trend is irreversible, with the deepening of political modernization it will only grow.

Renewal of representative bodies of power, new principles of Mazhilis and maslikhats formation are closely linked to the comprehensive transformation of the executive vertical – the government and akimats (administration). In the future, the government will include not only representatives of the party that won the most votes, but representatives of other parliamentary parties as well.

In general, all the political initiatives presented in the address comprehensively fill with real content the key formula of our nation-building “strong President – influential Parliament – accountable Government”. The new reform gives a start to the electoral cycle, which will allow a restart of the entire political system.
