RAWALPINDI: The start of the first Test between Pakistan and England may be delayed as 14 members of the touring party contracted a viral infection and didn’t attend today’s practice session.

“The PCB and ECB are in discussions regarding the commencement of the 1st PAKvENG Test as some England players are down with viral infection,” tweeted PCB.

The board said that it was monitoring the situation and is in contact with ECB. Will provide further updates in due course, it added.

Earlier today, BBC reported that at least 14 members of the England squad have been affected by a virus ahead of the first Test against Pakistan in Rawalpindi, which starts on December 1.

According to BBC, the squad members who have been affected by the virus include around eight players.

“The England squad, including captain Ben Stokes, has been affected by a virus on the eve of the first Test against Pakistan in Rawalpindi,” said the British channel.

“About half of the playing squad of 16 has been hit, with only five taking part in an optional training session.”

A statement by ECB confirmed the infection in the squad, but it did not mention the number of people affected by the viral illness.

Meanwhile, an ECB spokesperson told Geo News that the English players have not been affected by COVID-19 nor are they showing any symptoms of it.

“The players are ready to play the Test. The medical panel is examining the players,” said the spokesperson.

He added that the player’s health was normal.

Farah Khan sends Rs5bn legal notice to Geo, Umar Zahoor, Shahzeb Khanzada

ISLAMABAD, NOV 29: Farah Khan, a close aide of PTI chief Imran Khan’s wife, sent a Rs5 billion legal notice on Tuesday to Dubai-based businessman Umar Farooq Zahoor, Geo News and anchorperson Shahzeb Khanzada for airing remarks about her alleged involvement in the sale of Toshakhana gifts.

On November 15, Zahoor appeared on Geo News programme Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath and claimed that the PTI government had sold an expensive Graff wristwatch — gifted to Imran by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman — for $2 million, worth approximately Rs280m at the time of sale in 2019.

The Toshakhana case over the sale of state gifts received by Imran became a major sticking point in national politics after the Election Commission of Pakistan disqualified the PTI chief for making “false statements and incorrect declaration”.

The matter shot into the spotlight again when Zahoor claimed in the Geo News programme that he had bought the watch through former accountability minister Shahzad Akbar and Farah.

The Dubai-based businessman also claimed that Farah wanted to sell the watch for $4-5m “but after negotiations, I purchased it for $2 million”. The payment, he added, was made in cash on Farah’s insistence.

The claims evoked an outcry from PTI leaders, including Akbar, who denied Zahoor’s allegations while Imran said he would approach international courts against Zahoor and Geo. Farah’s legal notice, dated November 26, alleged that Zahoor had “deliberately uttered various defamatory remarks” against her and “falsely told” the anchor that Akbar had introduced him to Farah who then met him to sell a watch, causing her “sizeable reputational damage.

It said that his statements without any proof were a “sheer denial and broad daylight infringement” of various constitutional rights and had also encouraged her rivals to further “noxious agenda to spread false and negative propaganda” against Farah.

The notice alleged that Zahoor, Geo and Khanzada had deliberately targeted Farah for “evil designs and machinations” to pursue a malafide and personal vendetta of defaming and devastating her name, business and reputation.

It asserted that Farah did not even travel to Dubai in 2019 and attached her travel history as proof.

The notice said that its copies were sent to the interior ministry, Federal Investigation Agency, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority and Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority to take swift appropriate action against the respondents.

The notice called upon Zahoor, Geo and Khanzada to:

cease and desist (C&D) from all “ongoing defamation” of Farah and her business

tender an unconditional apology and prompt C&D written assurance within seven days of the notice’s receipt

publish a contradiction and tender an unconditional apology together with a prompt and perpetual C&D assurance on Geo News as well as social media within seven days of the notice’s receipt

pay Rs5bn as compensation to Farah

The notice threatened legal action if the stipulations were not met.

Western allies to help Ukraine brave winter of war

Bucharest, Nov 29 (AFP/APP):NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg warned Tuesday that Russia was using winter as a "weapon of war" against Ukraine, as Western allies meeting in Bucharest planned to help Kyiv mend its ravaged power grid.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was to announce "substantial" financial aid to help Ukraine deal with damaged infrastructure on the sidelines of a meeting of NATO's foreign ministers.
A senior US official said the assistance would "not be the end" and pointed out the Biden administration had budgeted $1.1 billion for energy spending in Ukraine and neighbouring Moldova.
A Russian campaign of missile strikes has severely damaged Ukraine's energy infrastructure and plunged millions into darkness as the country braces against the first snows and chill winds of winter.
Stoltenberg said "the message from all of us will be that we need to do more" to help Kyiv fix its gas and electricity infrastructure and provide air defence to help it protect itself better.
He said he expected Russia to carry out more attacks on Ukraine's grid as the Kremlin suffers defeats on the ground and warned Europe should "be prepared for more refugees".
"Russia is actually failing on the battlefield. In response to that they are now attacking civilian targets, cities because they're not able to win territory," Stoltenberg said at the start of the two-day meeting.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba was to meet his NATO counterparts to urge them to send more weaponry for Kyiv and assistance in coping with Moscow's attacks.
