Iranian spy network busted in Azerbaijan

ISTANBUL, NOV 14 /APP/ – An illegal Iranian spy network was busted on Monday, Azerbaijan’s State Security Service said. Five Azerbaijani citizens, who were part of the network were arrested for treason, the security service added in a statement.

One of the citizens arrested worked as a captain in the country’s oil fleet in the Caspian Sea. He “collected information about companies and representative offices of foreign countries operating in Azerbaijan, the place and time of exercises conducted by the Azerbaijani Naval Forces, and cargo transported to oil platforms.”

Two others reportedly took photos and videos of areas where oil and natural gas pipelines passed through, in addition to the location of various military equipment, and transferred them to the Iranian intelligence.The fourth person who was arrested allegedly shared details about the “political and social processes in Azerbaijan,” as well as information on the location, type and command level of Azerbaijani military units to the Iranian intelligence in exchange for money.

The fifth person allegedly determined the location of Azerbaijani citizens hiding in Iran. The statement further said the closed WhatsApp groups operating “on the instructions of the Iranian special service” were exposed during the investigation conducted by the State Security Service.

These WhatsApp groups were trying to propagate “radical and religious-extremist ideas … aimed at the creation of a religious state in Azerbaijan.” APP

RCCI food festival concluded at Ayub National Park

RAWALPINDI, Nov 13 (DNA): A three-day food festival organized by Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce & Industry (RCCI) concluded at Ayub National Park, here, on Sunday.

In the festival more than 55 food stalls were set up representing delicious and diverse Pakistani cuisines. Pakistani popular singer Natsha Baig performed at the festival together with Chef Gulzar, Shan Khan, Bakhsi Brother, Mash Baloch, Hassan Darbuka and others.

The ladies of the Indonesian embassy also amazed the visitors of the 2nd Pindi Food Fest, 2022 with “Angklung” performance playing “Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da” by the Beatles and traditional folksong. Indonesian food stall attracted many visitors who wanted to experience some similarities with Pakistani dishes but were encouraged to join in by the unique flavors of Indonesian cuisines. 

President, PM express condolences over loss of lives in Istanbul blast

ISLAMABAD, NOV 13: President Dr Arif Alvi and Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday expressed their condolences to Turkiye over loss of precious lives in Istanbul blast.

On his Twitter handle, the prime minister expressed his deep anguish over the explosion at Istiklal Avenue, Istanbul and conveyed condolences to the brotherly people of Turkiye on part of the government of Pakistan and its people.

The prime minister also prayed for the speedy recovery of those who had been injured in the explosion.

“I have learnt with deep anguish about the explosion at popular Istiklal avenue in the heart of Istanbul. Govt & people of Pakistan express deepest condolences to the brotherly people of Turkiye at the loss of precious lives & send prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured,” he posted a tweet.

The president strongly condemned the explosion and expressed solidarity with the government and people of Turkiye over the incident. He said that they shared grief with the people of Turkiye.

He said that terrorism was a collective issue of the world.

The president prayed for the departed souls and for the bereaved families to bear the loss with fortitude, President Secretariat Press Wing said in a press release.

He also prayed for the quick recovery of the injured people.

An explosion on Istanbul’s popular pedestrian Istiklal Avenue killed at least four people and injured 38 others,

Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya, on his Twitter handle, informed that there were casualties from the blast that occurred around 4:20 pm local time (1320 GMT) on Sunday.

“According to the initial reports, four people lost their lives and 38 people were injured in the explosion that took place on Istiklal Street,” he further tweeted.

LAHORE: Chinese Consul-General in Lahore Zhao Shiren has said four extra corridors are being added to the flagship China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) as both Islamabad and Beijing have agreed on it during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s recent China visit.

Speaking at a seminar here on Sunday on impacts of the policies adopted in the 20th congress of the Communist Party of China that elected President Xi as its general secretary for another five-year term, he said Sharif’s maiden visit as PM has been “unprecedentedly constructive and successful” as both sides agreed to adding four new corridors – digital, industrial, green and health – to the flagship CPEC project.

In the wake of questions raised during the seminar on slowing down of work on CPEC in the past, the diplomat said he would not blame anyone, neither in China nor Pakistan, for it but could assure [Pakistanis] that from now on the pace would pick up.

He said that the project would benefit both China and Pakistan but more to the latter and urged upon Pakistanis that being on the driving seat they should take ownership of the project, while Chinese could only facilitate them in this regard.

Foreign affairs expert Muhammad Mahdi lamented that the first phase of the CPEC could not be completed because of ‘ineptness’ of the previous government.

He said all Pakistani political parties needed to make a commitment with the CPEC in their respective manifestoes for the next elections so that the project could not be harmed again whichever party comes into power.

About anti-CPEC propaganda, he said the western world is also being taken on board on the project while PM Sharif made it clear during a reception by the US ambassador that Islamabad would go along with the country that would come forward and help Pakistan at this critical time.

He said China has so far given Rs30 billion aid, the largest by any country, for flood victims, while it’s also expected to announce the biggest relief for Pakistan at the Paris Club meeting.

Jawed Salim Qureshi, chairman of an agro research organization, stressed on transfer of technology in the agriculture sector, particularly in major crops like cotton, wheat, maize, to enhance yield and cut cost of production for Pakistani farmers.

Comparing data on the wide agro-production gap in China and Pakistan, he said older seeds of various crops were failing to give desired results and there’s need for introducing new ones. He said if there was any obstacle in government-to-government agricultural cooperation, then business-to-business cooperation avenues should be explored to accelerate local farm productivity as private sector did not require subsidies but facilitation.

Former additional secretary Nazeer Husssain said CPEC was targeted by the vested interest through thousands of fake articles and called for an effective response to the propaganda. He said civil society must be taken along for sustainable Pak-China relations. He said that Chinese diplomatic and economic help would also be needed for stability in Afghanistan, the route to the Central Asia.

Dr Amjad Magsi from the Punjab University said China’s vision of building a human community with a shared future is gaining support from more countries and will play a vital role in promoting world peace and development.

Dr Khalid Jalal from a UK university regretted that the previous Pakistan government showed a lack of commitment with CPEC. Referring to Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa’s trouble-shooting role in relations between the two countries, he said Islamabad could not yet decide on the post-Bajwa scenario with regard to sustainability of the CPEC.

ISLAMABAD, NOV 13: Prime Minister’s Special Representative for Interfaith Harmony and Middle East Hafiz Muhammad Tahir Mehmood Ashrafi on Sunday said the Middle East Green Initiative (MGI) and 27th session of the Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27) would open new avenues of development in Pakistan and the Middle East countries.

Ashrafi, who is also the chairman of Pakistan Ulema Council, in an exclusive talk with APP, informed that the MGI signified Saudi Arabia’s commitment to international sustainability efforts and enabled the region to help protect the planet by clearly defining an ambitious road map that significantly contributed to achieving global targets.

He said religious leaders were constantly creating awareness on the climate change challenges besides the intersect and interfaith dialogue at the global level.

He said under the patronage of Saudi Arabia’s Prime Minister and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and with the support of the government of Egypt, the World Conference on Environment had determined an effective and positive direction at the global level in general and in the Islamic world in particular.

“Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman has emerged as a great and visionary leader not only for the Muslim Ummah but also for the entire world,” he added.

He said Pakistan, besides assuring full cooperation, had already welcomed the Saudi Crown Prince’s vision of Saudi and Middle East Green Initiatives.

Regarding the postponement of the Saudi Crown Prince’s visit to Pakistan, Ashrafi said the visit was postponed due to the personal engagements of the prince.

As per reports, the Crown Prince had not only postponed his visit to Pakistan but also delayed his visit to some other countries, he said adding, “As soon as his visit is rescheduled, it would be intimated to the quarters concerned.”

He also clarified that Pakistan’s internal affairs had nothing to do with the postponement of the Crown Prince’s visit.

He also urged the people “not to be misguided by the rumours being propagated by negative elements.”

He said the Crown Prince was not only a state guest but was the most-adored personality of the Pakistani nation, who would be given a historic welcome on his arrival to the country.

He said Pak-Saudi relations not only were based on diplomacy but also on faith and belief which could not be shaken by any propaganda or conspiracy. 

Four dead in blast on busy central Istanbul avenue, cause unknown

ISTANBUL, NOV 13: Four people were killed and 38 others were wounded on Sunday when an explosion rocked a busy pedestrian street in central Istanbul, sending people running from the fiery blast, according to the local governor and witnesses.

Ambulances rushed to the scene on the packed Istiklal Avenue, which police quickly cordoned off. The area, in the Beyoglu district of Turkey’s largest city, had been crowded as usual at the weekend with shoppers, tourists and families.

State broadcaster TRT and state-owned Anadolu agency said the cause of the blast was not yet known.

“Four people were killed and 38 others were wounded according to initial reports,” Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya said on Twitter, adding that the explosion occurred around 4.20 p.m. local time (1320 GMT).

A Reuters reporter saw a helicopter overhead and several ambulances in nearby Taksim Square.

“When I heard the explosion, I was petrified, people froze, looking at each other. Then people started running away. What else can you do,” said Mehmet Akus, 45, a worker in a restaurant on Istiklal.

“My relatives called me, they know I work on Istiklal. I reassured them,” he said.

The nearby Kasimpasa police station told Reuters all crews were at the scene but gave no further details.

Local media said crime inspectors were on the scene and Anadolu reported that the Istanbul chief public prosecutor’s office had launched an investigation into the blast.

While the cause of the blast was unknown, Istanbul and other Turkish cities have been targeted in the past by Kurdish separatists, militants and other groups.

The Turkish Red Crescent said blood was being transferred to nearby hospitals.

Turkey’s RTUK regulator imposed a broadcast ban on coverage of the blast around an hour after it occurred.

“My condolences to those who lost their lives in the explosion on Istiklal Avenue,” Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu said on Twitter.

ISLAMABAD – President Dr Arif Alvi on Sunday congratulated Jos Buttler-inspired England for clinching the title of ICC World T20 for the second time.

Taking to Twitter, President Arif Alvi tweeted, “Congratulations England, good all-round performance to lift the cup. Well played Pakistan, you bowled good and tried your best despite a low score.”

It merits mention that England sweep Pakistan by 5 wickets after restricting Pakistan to 137/8. The English bowlers were outstanding with the bowl, particularly Sam Curran who just conceded 3-12. Later, with the bat, Buttler and Stokers were smart enough to look belligerent for their knocks.
