Pakistan marks school safety day with nationwide events

ISLAMABAD, May 22: /DNA/ – The Aga Khan Agency for Habitat (AKAH) Pakistan celebrated School Safety Day on May 16, 2024.

The event was held in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Government Education Department.

The main event took place at Islamabad Model School for Girls G9/3.

Idress Mehsud from NDMA and Nusrat Nasab, CEO of AKAH Pakistan, attended the event.

Representatives from the government, AKDN agencies, partner organizations, students, and media officials also attended.

In 2008, an international conference on School Safety recommended celebrating this day annually.

The goal is to raise awareness about safe and secure learning environments.

AKAH Pakistan has promoted school safety since the inception of School Safety Day.

Nusrat Nasab emphasized the importance of creating safer learning environments.

She called for collaboration to ensure children’s safety in schools.

Idress Mehsud highlighted the lessons from the 2005 Kashmir Earthquake.

He stressed the importance of disaster preparedness and training.

Pakistan is highly vulnerable to climate change and natural disasters.

AKAH Pakistan has trained over 40,000 students and 3,000 teachers in disaster response.

More than 18,000 school safety committees have been formed.

Vulnerable schools in Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral have been retrofitted for safety.

Schools in southern regions received Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) facilities and safe drinking water.

Seminars were also conducted in Karachi, Gilgit, and Chitral.

The events underscored the commitment to a secure environment for children.

School Safety Day helps refine strategies based on lessons from past disasters.

This ensures a safe environment for the holistic development of youth.
