Decision to end tax amnesty schemes is correct: Mian Zahid

Decision to end tax amnesty schemes is correct: Mian Zahid

KARACHI, APR 24 /DNA/ – Chairman of National Business Group Pakistan, President Pakistan Businessmen and Intellectuals Forum, All Karachi Industrial Alliance, and former provincial minister Mian Zahid Hussain said on Wednesday that the business community supports the Prime Minister’s interest in improving tax administration and relevant laws.

He said that PM Shahbaz Sharif’s efforts to raise tax income are commendable as it is necessary to save the country facing pressing economic issues.

Mian Zahid Hussain said that a correct decision has been made to end tax amnesty schemes, which have served no purpose for decades.

Talking to the business community, the veteran business leader said that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s interest in supervising tax reforms is commendable.

He added that the PM is working day and night to increase the tax revenue, which is necessary for the current situation to put the country back on track.

The business leader said that the Prime Minister is rightly concerned about billions of rupees being stuck in tax disputes. The government’s decision to end tax amnesty schemes is also correct, which was the long-standing desire of the lenders.

Mian Zahid Hussain said that the country’s economy has been destroyed, and it is no longer possible to restore it through traditional measures, so it is necessary to resort to non-traditional measures to increase the resources.

For this, the tax base should be increased, and instead of burdening the public, the burden should be placed on the wealthy classes.

Mian Zahid Hussain said some elements deliberately keep billions of rupees in tax matters hanging with the bureaucracy and courts. Still, steps are being taken to stop this process, which is in the country’s interests.

Strict action is needed against the black sheep who delay tax matters worth trillions of rupees for their gains.

Mian Zahid Hussain said that the share of tax in Pakistan’s economy is nine percent. At the same time, it is seventeen percent in the neighboring country India. India has far surpassed Pakistan in the economic field, one of the reasons being that its revenue is almost double that of Pakistan.

If this can happen in India, why not in Pakistan, he said, adding that the Finance Minister has revealed that foreign exchange reserves will increase to ten billion dollars by June while PIA will be sold by July, which is encouraging.

After PIA, all the failed should be sold. A complete ban should be imposed on creating new departments because there are dozens of central and provincial departments where officers and staff receive salaries and benefits for doing nothing.

He noted that due to the government’s efforts, international organizations’ confidence has been restored, and investors’ trust has also been restored.

Inflation is coming down while the rupee is stabilizing. Overall, conditions are improving, and things are expected to improve considerably within a year.

Blinken back in China seeking pressure but also stability

Blinken back in China seeking pressure but also stability

SHANGHAI, APR 24 (AFP/APP/DNA): US Secretary of State Antony Blinken returned Wednesday to China on his second visit in a year, as the United States ramps up pressure on its rival over its support for Russia while also seeking to manage tensions with Beijing.

The US diplomat will meet China’s top brass on Friday in Beijing, where he is also expected to plead for restraint as Taiwan inaugurates a new leader, and to raise US concerns on Chinese trade practices — a vital issue for President Joe Biden in an election year.

But Blinken is also seeking to stabilise ties, with tensions between the world’s two largest economies palpably easing since his last visit in June.

At the time, he was the highest-ranking US official to visit China in five years, and the trip was followed by a meeting between the countries’ presidents in November.

At that summit in California, Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed to a US wish list including restoring contact between militaries and cracking down on precursor chemicals to fentanyl, the powerful painkiller behind an addiction epidemic in the United States.

Blinken opened his visit in Shanghai. He will meet students and business leaders in what an aide called a bid to highlight warm ties between the American and Chinese peoples.

The friendly side trip — the first visit by a US secretary of state to the bustling metropolis since Hillary Clinton in 2010 — would have been unthinkable until recently, with hawks on both sides previously speaking of a new Cold War between the two powers.

The open letter, copies of which were distributed to all apex court judges, suggested the possibility of a judicial convention to discuss the interference of intelligence operatives with judicial functions and the intimidation of judges, which undermines judicial independence.

In response, the Supreme Court initiated suo motu proceedings based on the letter, soliciting input from all high court judges on the matter.

Following the Supreme Court’s directive, the IHC chief justice requested suggestions from the judges by Monday.

US warns Pakistan of ‘possible sanctions’

US cautions against 'potential threat of sanctions' over Pakistan-Iran agreements

“We advise anyone considering business deals with Iran to be aware of potential risk of sanctions”

Agencies

WASHINGTON: The United States State Department Tuesday warned against the “potential risk of sanctions” in light of the business deals between Pakistan and Iran following Iranian President Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi’s official visit to Pakistan.

Without mentioning Pakistan in a statement, a State Department spokesperson said: “We advise anyone considering business deals with Iran to be aware of the potential risk of sanctions.”

The spokesperson, while commenting on Islamabad’s trade and economic ties with Washington, said US is Pakistan’s biggest export market and one of its largest investors.

“We have also been a leading investor in Pakistan for the past 20 years. Pakistan’s economic success is in both of our interest, and we look forward to continuing our partnership,” they added, stressing the significance of economic relations between both countries.

However, considering Islamabad’s closeness with Tehran amid President Raisi’s three-day visit and the bilateral agreements signed between the two nations, the spokesperson hinted towards these relations being at risk with chances of potential sanctions owing to Iran’s position in the world.

“We do not preview potential sanctions actions,” the spokesperson said and referred journalists to the Government of Pakistan for any further comment on the matter.

The State Department’s statement comes at a crucial standpoint in Pakistan’s history as it works to advance its “brotherly ties” with Iran by welcoming their president, months after their cross-border skirmishes in January.

The statement also holds significance following Iran’s standing at the global level, owing to its regional activities and recent clashes with Israel after it attacked its embassy in Damascus, killing two senior members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Meanwhile, both Tehran and Islamabad also signed a total of eight accords on varying subjects to enhance cooperation in the different fields including trade, science technology, agriculture, health, culture, and judicial matters with both PM Shehbaz and President Raisi witnessing the momentous occasion.

In his address during joint presser with the prime minister, the Iranian president revealed that both Pakistan and Iran have agreed to increase trade volume to $10 billion.

The signing ceremony also marked the ratification of a security cooperation agreement between the governments of both countries.
