Emirates boosts education access with stationery, books for SOS village

LAHORE, MAR 24 (DNA)- Education is one of the greatest engines for societal development, laying a strong foundation for economic empowerment. To support Pakistan’s initiatives of making education accessible to its children, Emirates, the world’s largest international airline, has donated essential supplies and limited-edition, handcrafted backpacks from its ‘Air crafted by Emirates’ collection to a non-profit organisation in Pakistan.

Pakistan has made significant reforms in its education system, continuously improving its infrastructure and resources to provide equal opportunities to children across the country. To support their efforts in rolling out access to education for children in rural areas, Emirates assisted the students of SOS Children’s Villages by donating 107 practical, stylish backpacks filled with stationery, books and hygiene supplies. The NGO was selected carefully as it serves local communities by creating a nurturing and inspirational space for financially disadvantaged youths to continue their education. The institute has a longstanding legacy of supporting youth and a particular focus on education. The initiative reinforces the airline’s commitment to ‘connecting communities’ by building enduring relationships and making meaningful differences in the destinations it serves.

Mohammed Al Nahari Alhashmi, Vice President, Pakistan for Emirates said: “We are pleased to collaborate with organizations such as SOS Village that share our commitment to advancing UN Sustainable Development Goal No. 4  to ensure every child has access to quality education and gets a chance to learn, thrive and unlock their full potential. With 17 branches across Pakistan, SOS Children’s Villages has a wide network in the country. They have been carefully selected for their dedicated work in providing abandoned or orphaned children with a safe and stable home where they can pursue their education.

“Donating the Aircrafted KIDS bags made with recycled materials and filled with essential stationary, learning and hygiene items will equip children with confidence and tools to make their everyday learning journey easier. We take pride in sharing our upcycled bags as this initiative not only promotes sustainability but also connects children in Pakistan with a piece of our history.”

Saba Faisal, the National Director of SOS Children’s Villages Pakistan, said: “It was a pleasure to host the Emirates team, and we would like to thank them for supporting the educational development of our children, who come from vulnerable backgrounds yet possess immense potential to achieve success and positively contribute to society. We are grateful for companies such as Emirates for their contribution towards the wellbeing of our students and impact them in such a positive way. It was a delight for our children to meet the Emirates team, receive the bags, and create happy memories they will cherish forever.”

To ensure the NGO received exactly what they needed for each and every student, SOS Children’s Villages handpicked the specific bags they required from the ‘Aircrafted KIDS by Emirates’ collection, accounting for children of all ages. The backpacks were then handmade by Emirates Engineering in-house, with materials upcycled from the airline’s iconic A380 and B777 aircraft that underwent refurbishments.

In addition to the bags, Emirates provided school and hygiene supplies such as pens, pencils, erasers, calculators, notebooks, sanitizers, soaps, toothpastes and more. The airline also purchased books which blend culturally rich stories with interactive learning opportunities. The books can be swapped and discussed amongst the students, further developing their understanding of the material.

Under the Aircrafted program more than 50,000 kg of materials from 191 aircrafts slated to undergo the airline’s interior cabin retrofit programme are expected to be recovered and repurposed. In addition to the donations made in Pakistan, Emirates provided organisations in Bangladesh and India with bags, bringing the total donation to 700  in Asia alone after donating 1,239 in Africa in the previous months.

16 terrorists killed during infiltration attempt at Pak-Afghan border: ISPR

16 terrorists killed during infiltration attempt at Pak-Afghan border: ISPR

QUETTA: At least 16 terrorists were killed by security forces during an attempt to cross into Pakistan from Afghanistan in general area Ghulam Khan Kallay of North Waziristan district, the military’s media wing said on Sunday.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), security forces detected a group of terrorists attempting to cross the Afghan border in North Waziristan’s Ghulam Khan Kallay area.

“Own troops effectively engaged and thwarted their attempt to infiltrate. After an intense fire exchange, all sixteen Khwarij [terrorists] were sent to hell,” said the ISPR in the statement, using the term designating members of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

It noted that Pakistan has consistently been asking the interim Afghan government to ensure effective border management on their side of the border.

“Interim Afghan government is expected to fulfil its obligations and deny the use of Afghan soil by Khwarij for perpetrating acts of terrorism against Pakistan,” it added.

The statement said security forces are determined and remain committed to securing its borders and eliminating the menace of terrorism from the country.

The two nations share a porous border spanning around 2,500 kilometres with several crossing points which hold significance as a key element of regional trade and relations between the people across both sides of the fence.

However, the issue of terrorism remains a key issue for Pakistan which has urged Afghanistan to prevent its soil from being used by groups such as the TTP to carry out attacks inside the former’s territory.

Islamabad’s reservations have also been confirmed by a report submitted to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) by the Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team, which has revealed a nexus between Kabul and the TTP with the former providing logistical, operational and financial support to the latter.

Earlier in Jan, security forces killed six terrorists trying to infiltrate from the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in Zhob district of Balochistan.

In a statement, the military’s media wing said security forces intercepted the militants on the night of January 22-23 in the district’s Sambaza area.

“Own troops effectively engaged and thwarted their [terrorists] attempt to infiltrate. Resultantly, six khwarij [terrorists] were sent to hell,” it added.

The country witnessed a sharp increase in terror attacks in January 2025, surging by 42% compared to the previous month, according to data released by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), a think tank.

The data revealed that at least 74 militant attacks were recorded nationwide, resulting in 91 fatalities, including 35 security personnel, 20 civilians, and 36 militants. Another 117 individuals sustained injuries, including 53 security forces personnel, 54 civilians, and 10 militants.

KP remained the worst-affected province, followed by Balochistan. In KP’s settled districts, militants carried out 27 attacks, resulting in 19 fatalities, including 11 security personnel, six civilians, and two militants.

The tribal districts of KP (erstwhile Fata) witnessed 19 attacks, leading to 46 deaths, including 13 security personnel, eight civilians, and 25 militants.

Attack on a mosque in the country’s southwest that killed at least 44 people

Saifullah Ansar

ISLAMABAD, MAR 23: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has strongly condemned the terrorist attack on worshippers in Niger that claimed lives of innocent people.

In a message on social media platform X (Sunday), the Prime Minister said Pakistan stands in solidarity with the people of Niger and shares in their grief during this difficult time.

He said the terrorist attack on worshippers during the sacred month of Ramadan is a painful reminder that terrorism recognizes neither faith nor humanity.

West Africa’s Sahel region has seen an uptick in violence in recent years following the rise of armed fighters linked to the al-Qaeda and ISIL (ISIS) armed groups that took over territory in north Mali after the 2012 Tuareg rebellion.

Since then, it has spread into neighbouring Niger and Burkina Faso, and more recently into the north of coastal West African countries such as Togo and Ghana.

Niger’s interior ministry said the latest attack occurred early in the afternoon as people were attending a prayer service at the mosque during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

China supports Pakistan in safeguarding national sovereignty, says Chinese ambassador

ISLAMABAD: Chinese ambassador to Pakistan Jiang Zaidong has said that China firmly supports Pakistan in safeguarding its national sovereignty

ISLAMABAD: Chinese ambassador to Pakistan Jiang Zaidong has said that China firmly supports Pakistan in safeguarding its national sovereignty and territorial integrity, in pursuing a development path suited to its national conditions, in resolutely combating terrorism, and in playing a greater role in international and regional affairs.

While addressing to the inauguration ceremony of the “Esthetic Bridges” exhibition on Sunday, ambassador said that, faced with the current turbulent international and regional situation, China will, as always, enhance solidarity and collaboration with Pakistan to safeguard the fundamental interests of both countries and international fairness and justice, and jointly promote an equal and orderly multipolar world and a universally-beneficial and inclusive economic globalization.

Ambassador also said that, we stand firmly together, continuing and passing down the traditional friendship between China and Pakistan. From the 1960s to the present, while the Pakistani population has grown from 46 million to more than 240 million, Pakistan’s GDP has increased from less than $19 billion to nearly $400 billion. Currently, the Pakistani government is advancing its reform agenda in full force, stabilizing and improving the economy, achieving growth in both exports and investments, reaching new highs in foreign reserves and remittances, with an expected GDP growth of more than 3%. Over the past 11 years, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor has made significant contributions to strengthening Pakistan’s development foundation and improving the well-being of Pakistani people, said ambassador

He also said that, as Chinese modernization advances comprehensively and the concept of a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind gains widespread support, we are ready to continue providing new opportunities for the development of our ironclad friend Pakistan through the new achievements of Chinese modernization. We stand firmly together, committed to creating miracles of development. As the founding father of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, once said, “We are not afraid of the deep sea or the fire, because we believe in the sun and the future”. For 85 years, the brotherly people of Pakistan have proactively pursued the great dream of building a strong and prosperous nation, told ambassador.

Ambassador also added that we stand firmly together, hand in hand, to create a brighter tomorrow. In 2015, Chinese President Xi Jinping’s historic state visit to Pakistan elevated our bilateral relationship to All-weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership, opening a new chapter in China-Pakistan relations. Since the establishment of the current Pakistani government a year ago, we have maintained close high-level exchanges. He noted that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited China in last June; Premier Li Qiang visited Pakistan in last October; President Zardari visited China this February, all these visits fully demonstrated the closeness of our ironclad friendship and the high level of all-weather strategic cooperation. Under the care and promotion of the leaders of both countries, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor has entered a new phase of building an “upgraded version”, providing new opportunities for high-quality development of practical cooperation between the two countries. Let us join hands and shoulders, while guided by the important consensus reached between our national leaders, to focus on building an even closer China-Pakistan Community with a Shared Future in the New Era, and continuously consolidate, deepen and expand the all-weather strategic cooperation between China and Pakistan, to jointly creating a brighter future for China-Pakistan friendship.

“Esthetic Bridges” Exhibition showcases strong China-Pakistan friendship

ISLAMABAD, MAR 23 /DNA/ – The inauguration ceremony of the “Esthetic Bridges” exhibition took place today, celebrating the artistic collaboration between China and Pakistan. The exhibition not only showcases the rich cultural heritage of both nations but also fosters deeper artistic dialogue.

Emphasizing cultural exchange, a representative highlighted President Xi Jinping’s Global Civilization Initiative, which promotes mutual learning and appreciation among civilizations. The event underscores China and Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening ties through shared artistic expression, enriching the global cultural landscape.

Today is Pakistan’s National Day, and we extend our warmest congratulations to our Pakistani brothers and sisters! This reminds me of the same day last year when I had the honor of being invited to attend the National Day parade, witnessing the moment when the guard of honorof the Chinese People’s Liberation Army marched in, and the entire audience of Pakistani spectators spontaneously stood up and applauded warmly, and announcer called in Chinese, “Zhong-Ba Youyi Wansui” (Chin-Pak Dosti Zindabad, Longlive China-Pakistan Friendship) After the event, many Pakistani friends enthusiastically greeted me in Chinese with “Ni Hao”,among them many are adorable children. At that moment, I deeply felt the warmth of the China-Pakistan friendship taking root, sprouting, and growing among younger generation, and I became even more convinced that our two countries must stand firmly together, hand in hand, to create a bright future for our respective nations’development and our friendly cooperation.

We stand firmly together, continuing and passing down the traditional friendship between China and Pakistan. On this day 85 years ago, the resolution to establish an independent Muslim country was adopted, marking the beginning of the Pakistani people’s great journey towards development and prosperity. Since the establishment of diplomaticrelationsbetween Chin and Pakistan in 1951, we have always stood together and supported each other through thick and thin. From then, Pakistan was the first Islamic country to recognize the People’s Republic of China; starting in 1966, China helped Pakistan build the Karakoram Highway, hailed as the “Eighth Wonder of the World”;during the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, China witnessed the touching story of Pakistan’s all-out assistance with tents;in 2010 and 2022, Pakistan receivedfull support from all sectors of Chinese society in fighting floods. The traditional friendship between China and Pakistan has been continuously consolidated and elevated as we move forward together. This ironclad friendship, “higher than the mountains, deeper than the sea, and sweeter than honey” has taken root, flourished, and will surely be passed down through generations and remain steady and enduring.

We stand firmly together, committed to creating miracles of development. As the founding father of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, once said, “We are not afraid of the deep sea or the fire, because we believe in the sun and the future”. For 85 years, the brotherly people of Pakistan have proactively pursued the great dream of building a strong and prosperous nation. As Chinese modernization advances comprehensively and the concept of a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind gains widespread support, we are ready to continue providing new opportunities for the development of our ironclad friend Pakistan through the new achievements of Chinese modernization.

We stand firmly together, jointly facing the changing times. As early as the 1930s, the great Pakistani poet Muhammad Iqbal wrote the lines, “the Chinese people are waking up from their sleep and the spring of Mount Himalaya is bursting”, enthusiastically supporting and echoing the Chinese people’s struggle for national independence and against foreign aggression. We will not forget that Pakistan was not only the first Islamic country to establish diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China but also stood up and supported China at critical moments such as the restoration of China’s lawful seat in the United Nations. Similarly, when Pakistan is in need, China has always been a strong backing for Pakistan. We firmly support Pakistan in safeguarding its national sovereignty and territorial integrity, in pursuing a development path suited to its national conditions, in resolutely combating terrorism, and in playing a greater role in international and regional affairs. Faced with the current turbulent international and regional situation, we will, as always, enhance solidarity and collaboration with Pakistan to safeguard the fundamental interests of both countries and international fairness and justice, and jointly promote an equal and orderly multipolar world and a universally-beneficial and inclusive economic globalization.

In the end, I wish the “Esthetic Bridges” exhibition a resounding success, and extend my festive greetings to our Pakistani friends on this joyous occasion! May China and Pakistan enjoy continued prosperity, and the China-Pakistan friendship flourish for generations to come!
