Ignored Fazl complains to Nawaz

ISLAMABAD – JUI-F chief Fazalur Rahman Thursday expressed his ‘serious reservations’ to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif over PML-N’s presidential nominee Mamnoon Hussain, in a meeting at PM House. The head of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F), which is a partner in ruling coalition, complained that they had not been taken on board on this matter. Had they been consulted on the candidate’s name earlier, they would have presented more worthy options, JUI-F spokesperson Jan Achakzai quoted Fazl as telling Nawaz.

Taxi drivers killing case should be decided within 30 days: SC

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court while hearing the suo moto case of a taxi drivers killing by Rangers has ordered that a challan (charge sheet) should be registered and the case be decided within 30 days. During proceedings of the case, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry remarked that there was no difference between this killing and that of Sarfaraz Shah.

Ousted Egypt president detained over Hamas contact

CAIRO: An investigating judge has ordered the detention of Egypt’s ousted president over alleged contacts with Hamas to help in his escape from prison in 2011, the official state news agency reported Friday in the first official word on his status since a military coup on July 3. The MENA news agency said Mohammed Morsi has been detained for 15 days for investigation into the charges. His detention can be extended as the inquiry continues.

Bush Sr shaves head in support of leukemia boy

DALLAS : Former US President George HW Bush shaved his salt and pepper comb-over locks in solidarity with a 2-year-old boy who lost his hair from leukemia treatments, his office said in a statement on Wednesday. Bush, 89, and members of his security detail, shaved their heads to support Patrick, the son of one of Bush’s security detail. Photos released by Bush’s office show 26 other security staff posing with Bush and Patrick, all of whom have only a light dust of peach fuzz atop their heads. The last name of the boy was withheld at the request of his family.

JK Rowling’s ‘secret’ novel tops book charts

JK Rowling’s “secret” crime novel has topped book charts after it was revealed she had written it under a pseudonym. The Harry Potter novelist published the book – The Cuckoo’s Calling – as Robert Galbraith. The book had sold less than 500 copies before the secret emerged in the Sunday Times, according to Nielsen BookScan’s figures.

China’s economic growth at 7.5% in April to June period

China’s economic growth slowed in the April to June period, the second straight quarter of weaker expansion. The world’s second biggest economy grew by 7.5% compared to the previous year, down from 7.7% in the January to March period, data showed. The figures were in line with analyst expectations. After decades of blistering growth in China, analysts say authorities now seem ready to accept a slower pace of expansion.
