BISP To Be Made A Transparent, Efficient Entity

Waheed Hussain BISP was initiated in October 2008 with an initial allocation of Rs.34 billion (US $ 425 million approximately) for the financial year 2008-09. The Programme aimed at covering 3.5 million families in the financial year 2008-2009. The allocation for the financial year 2012-13 is Rs. 70 billion to provide cash assistance to 5.5 million families, which constitutes almost 18% of the entire population. Thus the Programme aims at covering almost 40% of the population below the poverty line. BISP is being implemented all across Pakistan including: all four provinces (Punjab, Sindh, Baluchistan, and Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwa), Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK),Gilgit Baltistan (GB) and Islamabad Capital Territory(ICT). To know more about BISP and its future plans Centreline and DNA conducted an exclusive interview of Chairman Enver Baig. Here are excerpts from his interview.

Syrian forces step up deadly attacks on Aleppo

DAMASCUS: Syrian forces bombarded Aleppo with barrel bombs and air raids for a second day Sunday, with scores of people killed in 48 hours, a monitor said, after peace talks ended inconclusively. At least 36 people were killed in Sunday’s attacks alone on Syria’s second city, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, after reporting 85 deaths the previous day. Saturday’s toll was one of the bloodiest in weeks and reflects the deep divide between the government of President Bashar al-Assad and his opponents despite 10 days of peace talks.

Strong earthquake rattles Greek island

ATHENS: A strong 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck near the Greek island of Cephalonia in the Ionian Sea early Monday, the the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported. The quake hit at 5:08 am (0308 GMT) with its epicentre just 12 kilometres from the town of Lixourion, 300 kilometres west of Athens, the USGS said. There were no immediate reports of any damage or casualties. A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck the same region late last month. That quake was felt on several Ionian islands and as far away as the capital Athens. Greece is one of Europe’s most earthquake-prone countries.

Talks with Taliban; govt moving In the right direction

The four-member committee formed to hold talks with Taliban held its first meeting on January 31. The committee, on the same day, also met with the Prime Minister and the Interior Minister. The prime minister assured the committee that all possible support shall be provided with a view to making all its endeavors a complete success. The prime minister said government had pinned high hopes on this committee and expects some result-oriented talks in the coming days.

He told the state-run news agency that their “shared life” had ended.Two weeks ago a magazine published photos which appeared to show Mr Hollande had been having an affair with an actress, Julie Gayet.Ms Trierweiler spent a week in hospital after the revelations. On Saturday evening she tweeted her thanks to the “wonderful staff” at the Elysee Palace.She said she “would never forget their devotion or the emotion at the time of departure”.

Thailand protesters block early election vote

Crowds of flag-waving demonstrators chained the doors of polling stations shut, despite promises by protest leaders not to obstruct the polls.Advance voting has reportedly been cancelled in a number of locations.Anti-government activists want PM Yingluck Shinawatra to step down and the political system to be reformed.Protesters descended on scores of polling stations in the Thai capital, Bangkok, and several southern provinces, preventing ballot officials and voters from entering and leading to the closure of at least 34 venues.

Ukraine crisis: Opposition rejects offer of PM post

Ukrainian opposition leader Arseniy Yatsenyuk says protests will continue after he rejected President Viktor Yanukovych’s offer to appoint him as prime minister of the country.Mr Yatsenyuk said the opposition was generally ready to accept leadership, but several key demands must be met, including new elections.Clashes continued overnight. Activists stormed a Kiev building housing police.The president’s proposal came amid new efforts to end the deadly unrest.He offered the post of prime minister to Mr Yatsenyuk and the position of deputy PM to former boxer Vitali Klitschko following talks on Saturday.’Not afraid’

36 foreign terrorists killed in North Waziristan aerial strike

At least thirty six foreign terrorists were among those killed in aerial strike in North Waziristan on Monday night. The dead include thirty three Uzbeks and three Germans. Wali Muhammad‚ Asmat ullah Shaheen Bittani‚ Noor Badshah‚ and Maulvi Farhad Uzbek are some of the key figures killed in the air strike.

President Karimov chairs Session of Uzbekistan’s Cabinet of Ministers

The Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan convened for an extended session on January 17 to review the socio-economic development in the country in 2013 and work out crucial priorities of the economic program for the year 2014.President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov addressed the meeting with a keynote speech.The head of our state noted in particular that despite the slowdown in the rates of world economic growth and the mounting risks in its development, Uzbekistan has been able to sustain higher economic growth rates and secure a macroeconomic balance and modernization of our economy in the past year as a result of the steadfast implementation of what was approved in the country as a strategy of reforms and development aimed at shaping a modern, competitive and diversified market economy.

During the fall of USSR at the turn of the last century the Armenian nationalists raised territorial claims to Azerbaijan demanding Nagorno-Karabakh. In 1988 more than 300 thousands Azerbaijanis were expelled from their homelands in Armenia. Some of them were killed with brutality, some died on the mountain passes trying to escape from men-hunters.
