Ivory Coast ‘may consider third term for president’

Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara may have to stand for a third term following the sudden death of Prime Minister Amadou Gon Coulibaly on Wednesday.

“All options are on the table, including a new candidacy for President Ouattara,” the ruling party’s executive director, Adama Bictogo, is quoted by the AFP news agency as saying.

The country is beginning eight days of national mourning for the late PM, who was the candidate for the ruling RDHP party in October’s presidential election, after Alassane Ouattara’s decision to step down.

Analysts say it will be difficult for the party to find a candidate of the same stature as the popular prime minister.

They say Mr Ouattara may then have to stand again, even though that could lead to accusations of abuse of democracy.

Mr Outtara came into power in 2011 after his predecessor, Laurent Gbagbo, was ousted from office after refusing to accept Mr Ouattara’s internationally recognised victory in the previous year’s elections.

PM Imran takes notice of Karachi power crisis

ISLAMABAD : Taking notice of the prolonged power outages in Karachi making life difficult for people, PM Imran took notice of the incident and asked Asad Umar and Governor Sindh Imran Ismail to meet the K-Electric leadership to resolve the crisis, on Thursday.

Both the governor and the prime minister discussed the overall situation in Sindh, particularly related to the COVID-19. The governor Sindh also spoke highly of the prime minister’s vision and successful strategy to combat the coronavirus in the country.

Meanwhile, the prime minister appealed to the nation to celebrate Eid-ul-Azha with simplicity, strictly observing the standard operating procedures (SOPs) against the coronavirus. He was talking to reporters after inaugurating the state-of-the-art 250-bed Isolation Hospital and Infectious Treatment Centre here, which has been completed in record 40 days at the cost of about Rs980 million.

Imran urged people not to resort to carelessness shown during the Eid-ul-Fitr last year and strictly observe the SOPs this year, as the virus would spread fast if people gathered in large number. “Since we were careless, the virus spread very fast and as a result, pressure on our hospitals was massive and the frontline doctors and nurses also faced so much pressure. Unfortunately, we also lost lives,” he explained.

The virus, he noted, peaked and afterwards, the government took measures, including the smart lockdown, and with the blessings of Allah Almighty, the virus curve was coming down now. “We are also not expecting that infections will come down so fast, as we think the virus would peak by July end,” he maintained.

The prime minister cautioned that any carelessness during Eid-ul-Azha would lead to a fresh spike in the coronavirus cases. However, he expressed satisfaction that with the cooperation of all the departments concerned, the curve of coronavirus cases in the country was on the decline. He said the smart lockdown had yielded positive results. The premier said the government had come up with SOPs about how to sacrifice animals this year.

“I appeal to the entire nation to observe Eid with simplicity for the sake of your country, its economy, and especially the elderly. If we take care now, then we can manage, God willing, to come out of this pandemic better than other countries,” he said.

Commending the completion of a modern isolation hospital in a record short period, the prime minister said important tasks could be completed with political will.

Bolivia’s President Anez has tested positive for coronavirus

LA PAZ: Bolivia’s President Jeanine Anez said on Thursday she has tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

Anez said in a tweet she was “well” and continuing to work while in isolation. “Together, we will come out of this,” she said.

The Bolivian government confirmed that at least seven ministers, including its health minister, had tested positive and were either undergoing treatment or recuperating at home.Anez said she had conducted a test given that many of her team had fallen ill.

“I feel well, I feel strong, I am going to keep working remotely from my isolation, and I want to thank all the Bolivians who are working to help us in this health crisis,” she said.

Bolivia is due to hold general elections on Sept. 6. The elections were originally planned for May but delayed due to the pandemic.

Political turmoil gripped the country last October when a disputed election led to widespread protests that eventually toppled longtime leftist leader Evo Morales.

Anez, a conservative former senator, assumed the interim president role in the political vacuum and initially said she would not run for full office, but later threw her hat in the ring.

Rival candidate and former President Jorge Tuto Quiroga, who is running again, said it was “indispensable” for Anez to be in full health and working towards the democratic transition.

Other leaders around the world also have contracted the virus. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, 55, spent three days in intensive care sick with COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus, while Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro confirmed on Wednesday he had tested positive.

Bolivia, a landlocked Andean nation of over 11.5 million people has registered more than 42,000 confirmed cases of the disease and 1,500 deaths and is one of the worst affected countries per capita in the world.
