ISLAMABAD: Pakistan reported 591 new coronavirus cases and four deaths over the past 24 hours, bring the number of confirmed infections in the country to 292,765 and fatalities to 6,235.

According to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), 24,956 samples were tested for Covid-19 during this period, resulting in the emergence of 591 new cases.

Of the total confirmed cases, 275,836 patients have recuperated from the infection, thereby bringing the number of active cases of the virus down to 10,694.

A total of 1,173 patients are under treatment at 735 hospitals across the country, 121 of whom are struggling for their lives on ventilators. More than 2.4 million tests have been conducted thus far.

Global deaths exceed 800,000

The global death toll from the coronavirus surpassed 800,000 on Saturday, according to a Reuters tally, with the United States, Brazil and India leading the rise in fatalities.

Nearly 5,900 people are dying every 24 hours from COVID-19 on average, according to Reuters calculations based on data from the past two weeks that ended on Friday.

That equates to 246 people per hour, or one person every 15 seconds.

The rate of deaths is holding steady with it taking 17 days to go from 700,000 to 800,000 deaths — the same time it took to go from 600,000 to 700,000.

Coronavirus: Quarantine rules kick in after Saturday deadline passes

UK tourists have spent thousands of pounds on new flights and endured long drives in a race to get home before new coronavirus travel rules kicked in.

As of 04:00 BST on Saturday, travellers returning to the UK from Croatia, Austria and Trinidad and Tobago must quarantine for 14 days.

Children in families who did not return in time will miss the start of school in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

But searches for flights to Portugal rose as it was put on the safe list.

Meanwhile, extra restrictions to stem the spread of Covid-19 have come into force in north-west England.

It comes as a further 18 deaths have been recorded in the UK, bringing the total number of people to have died within 28 days of testing positive for coronavirus to 41,423.

Jane Grist, from Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, said she was “livid” because the rule change meant her two sons would have to miss the first week of school after they return from the Croatian city of Sibenik, on 27 August.

“We’ve been focusing on the return to school as a return to normality,” she said.

“Now we’ve got to explain [to our youngest son] he won’t be able to go back at the same time as all of his friends.”

Ms Grist said the holiday was “the one thing we have been looking forward to” after she was made redundant last year – and now it has been “spoilt”.

Frano Matušić, Croatia’s tourism minister, said his country was “really disappointed” by the new quarantine rules and urged the UK government to reverse its decision.

Another Friday, another country in Europe where hundreds of British tourists have frantically had to figure out ways to head home early.

The airline authorities here in Split put on two extra flights on Friday to cope with the sudden demand. There were at least 500 passengers on board both aircraft. All were British travellers who booked last minute.

“It beggars belief. Why was there such short notice for us to leave?” Karen, an English teacher, tells me. She’d just begun a week in Split and was in the middle of booking a ferry to Italy to get out of the country by the evening, because she said the UK flights had sold out.

In the beautiful medieval town of Sibernik, a group of eight friends from Nottingham Trent University had given up efforts to get back early. Instead they drank beers in a harbour-side cafe.

Lou, 20, said: “We tried to get something, but everything was too expensive.”

Her friend Amber added: “It’s upsetting because we planned this trip carefully, and quarantine means we can’t go back to part-time work for two weeks, which sucks because it helped towards my university studies.”

Neil Warnes, 59, from Margate, was on holiday with his wife and two teenage children in an Alpine village in Austria when he heard the news on Thursday evening.

The family spent about £2,000 to cut their holiday short by one day, in order to get home before the quarantine rules came into effect. They left Seefeld – a town with “hardly any people there” – at 02:00 on Friday to get to Munich airport, for an early morning flight to Heathrow.

“As our car was parked at Gatwick, another cab journey was needed and we finally arrived home in Kent at midday,” Mr Warnes said.

“Austria appeared to be adhering to all social distancing measures and hand sanitation stations were in all the shops. Our small hotel had three alone on the ground floor.

“With this in mind we were so surprised when the government restrictions were put in place as Austria have had a historically low level since March. There didn’t really appear to be any problems at all,” he added.

‘I wish we’d stayed at home’

Another traveller, Cristiano Torti, 41, paid about £1,500 to fly his wife and two children back to the UK six days earlier than planned.

He said they had lost about £500 of the original return flight bookings, but it would have been “very difficult” to quarantine with his young children as he and his wife both work from home.

Mr Torti, a developer from Oxfordshire, said that his eldest child would have missed some of the new school term had the family not returned in time.

“We’ve lost a lot of of money, between the accommodation, the flights, and the knock-on effects: the car hire, the airport parking. I kind of wish we’d stayed home, despite the miserable British weather,” he said.

Sindh government shortlists two bureaucrats for Karachi administrator post

KARACHI, AUG 22 – The Sindh government has finalised the names of two bureaucrats for the Karachi administrator post: Najam Ahmed Shah and Hassan Naqvi.

The selected candidate will take over after Karachi Mayor Wasim Akhtar steps down after completing his four years in power by August end. The administrator will stay in power until the local body elections are held in Karachi and a new mayor is sworn in.

Both the bureaucrats are Grade 21 officers and currently working as secretaries for different departments of the Sindh government.

Shah is posted as the secretary of the investment department. He has also served as the specialised healthcare and medical education secretary for Punjab from 2016 to 2018. Shah has also served as the finance secretary, and science and technology secretary for Sindh.

Naqvi, on the other hand, is currently working as Sindh’s finance secretary. He has previously served as director of the export processing zone authority, the project director of the computerization board of revenue, and worked at CM House, Governor House and CDGK too.

Karachi elections

Akhtar was sworn in on August 30, 2016 after the MQM won the local body elections in December 2015.

According to the law, the Sindh government has three months days to hold the elections from the day the mayor steps down. No preparations, however, have been made for the polls.

Four years ago, the polls were held on the directives of the Supreme Court. The administrator was running the city’s affairs as no elections were held after 2009.

Administrator appointment not on Karachi committee’s agenda

Last Saturday, some leaders of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Pakistan People’s Party, and MQM-P leadership met in Islamabad. They all agreed to work together for the betterment of Karachi and address its civic issues.

In that meeting, a coordination committee was formed comprising the members of all three political parties. The members included Planning and Development Minister Asad Umar, Ports and Shipping Minister Ali Zaidi, Telecommunication Minister Aminul Haq, Sindh CM Murad Ali Shah, and Sindh LG Minister Nasir Hussain Shah.

The coordination committee will meet in Karachi at Sindh CM House today (August 22).

The selection of Karachi administrator is not in the agenda of the meeting, he said, adding that it could be discussed though. “It is the prerogative of the Sindh government to appoint Karachi administrator.” MQM-P just wants the government to appoint a competent and skilled officer who is aware of the city’s dynamics.

He, however, clarified that his party has yet to given any name for the post.

Khurram Sher Zaman, a PTI MPA, said that the Sindh government has right to appoint Karachi administrator, but it should consult it with other stakeholders. “A decision with mutual understanding is needed”, he added.

He speculated that the provincial government may opt for Naqvi as he has been working closely with the Sindh CM.

Shah, on the other hand, has already clarified that the appointment of the Karachi administrator is an administrative issue and would be dealt with accordingly.

CPEC enters new stage of high-quality development: Chinese FM

HAIKOU, AUG 22 (DNA) – The construction of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor has entered a new stage of high-quality development and will continue to play an important role in the revitalization of Pakistan, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said.

Wang made the remarks when holding the second strategic dialogue between China and Pakistan with visiting Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi in south China’s Hainan Province.

Both parties will push to complete the projects under construction in time, create more job opportunities, vigorously improve the people’s livelihood, strengthen cooperation in fields including industrial parks, human resource training, poverty alleviation, medical care and agriculture, and continue to release the potential of the corridor to achieve common development, said Wang.

Speaking of the current COVID-19 epidemic situation, Wang said that China is willing to share the experience of regular epidemic prevention and control with Pakistan in a timely manner, continue to carry out cooperation on anti-epidemic supplies, and choose Pakistan as a prior international cooperation partner of the vaccine research.

“China-Pakistan ties have been tested by the epidemic, the mutual trust has been consolidated and cooperation has been deepened,” said Wang, adding that the relation of the two “iron friends” has been purified. The two sides also agreed to deepen the construction of the China-Pakistan community of a shared future and a community of health in the common fight against the epidemic.

For his part, Qureshi said that Pakistan firmly supports all of China’s core interests and major concerns, and is willing to work with China to jointly plan for future cooperation, carry out cooperation in various fields including vaccine research, and jointly oppose the politicization and stigmatization of the epidemic.

“Pakistan is willing to work with China to advance the construction of the Pakistan-China Economic Corridor,” Qureshi said. The two sides also exchanged views on Afghanistan and other international and regional issues. After the dialogue, the two foreign ministers met with the press.

When answering a question that the United States requested the United Nations Security Council launch the snapback mechanism to restore sanctions against Iran, Wang said that such demand was “completely unreasonable.”

“The United States only considered its own interests. It applied international law if the law was in conformity with the nation’s need and discarded the law if it did not,” said Wang.

Regarding the intra-Afghan negotiations, Wang said that China hopes relevant parties to uphold the fundamental direction of achieving a political settlement, adhere to the basic principle of Afghan-led peace progress, strive for a broad and inclusive framework, and stick to the path of solving both symptoms and root causes.

The international community and regional countries should also uphold justice and push the negotiation to achieve peace, he said. = DNA
