Nagorno-Karabakh is Azerbaijan

The Armenian aggression has provided Azerbaijan with an ample chance of turning this act of aggression into an opportunity and thus settle this issue once and for all

COMMENT

Ansar M Bhatti

The valiant nation of Azerbaijan is set to regain its lost territory called Nagorno-Karabakh as the Azerbaijani forces have already re-taken a number of surrounding areas of the occupied territory. Both countries went into war when Armenians on September 27, 2020 attacked Azerbaijani areas killing innocent people.

Then Armenia attacked second largest city of Azerbaijan called Ganga where many innocent people were killed and scores of others left wounded. The international community then moved and tried to broker a peace deal. Russia jumping into the fray, facilitated a meeting of leadership of both countries and ‘succeeded’ to win a temporary ceasefire. However ceasefire could not last for long as both sides accused each other of violating the ceasefire. It was Armenia that resorted to attack those cities which had nothing to do with the conflict while Azerbaijan forces kept their fight limited to the conflict zone only.

Now when the conflict has already taken a heavy toll especially on the innocent people of Azerbaijan, what will happen next and what will be the likely future of Nagorno-Karabakh? That is the question all stakeholders are trying to find an answer. Turkey, as we know, has openly supported Azerbaijan while Russia has shown cautious response to Armenian call for help for Russians can only help Armenia if any of the Armenian territory is attacked. And the Russians have categorically conveyed this to the leadership of Armenia as well. Azerbaijan leadership on the contrary is exercising maximum restraint despite provocations by the Armenians. Attack on cities like Ganja in fact is a sort of provocation. Armenia wants Azerbaijan to lose its cool and attack Armenia to take revenge and thus it could tell to the world, especially the Russians that look Azerbaijan has attacked Armenia so come to its rescue.

Armenia so far has not been able to garner support of the international community in its favour that is why its frustration is increasing with the each passing day. So much so, Iran, which used to support Armenia in the past, has now openly supported the Azerbaijani stand. The Iranian president in a recent message made it clear that Nagorno-Karabakh belongs to Azerbaijan. On diplomatic front this is ostensibly considered  a major achievement for Baku.

As regards Pakistani stand, our government, establishment, civil society and media have whole-heartedly been supporting Azerbaijan. In a rare show of solidarity with the government and people of Azerbaijan the members of civil society arranged memorial corners in different places in order to pay homage to the brave Azerbaijani forces.

Media support has also been forthcoming. Pakistani newspapers and periodicals published a number of articles highlighting various aspects of the issue. The Azerbaijan embassy in Islamabad spearheaded by Ambassador Ali Alizade has also been very instrumental in projecting and promoting the issue of Nagorno-Karabakh. Likewise disseminating of latest information about the on-going conflict also contributed greatly towards keeping the media fraternity abreast with what was happening on ground.

There are loud and clear calls from the international community and Azerbaijan that Armenia must be tried for war crimes as it has killed many innocent people. This demand makes sense and the world must take note of it because any complacency in this regard would encourage acts of aggression even in the prospect.

As rightly said by President of Turkey Reccip Tayyip Erdogan that Azerbaijan is close to victory, which was a matter of days now.  Azerbaijan this time would like to take this conflict to its logical end, which means it will re-gain control of Nagorno-Karabakh. The Armenian adventure has provided the Azerbaijani leadership with an ample chance of turning this act of aggression into an opportunity and thus settle this issue once and for all.

UAE relaxes Islamic laws, allows alcohol consumption

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Saturday relaxed its Islamic laws that dealt with personal freedoms, loosening alcohol restrictions and criminalising “honour killing”.

The development comes a few weeks after US President Donald Trump brokered a historic peace deal normalising relations between the UAE, Israel, Sudan and Bahrain.

In its legal reforms, the UAE has also scrapped punishment for allowing unmarried couples to live together. Though authorities used to look the other way in the case of foreigners, especially in Dubai, there was always the threat of punishment lingered on in tourists’ minds.

The Gulf country has also criminalised the “honour killings” custom, according to which a male relative could escape prosecution for assaulting a woman who was seen as bringing disgrace or dishonour to the family.

Human rights groups have lashed out at the UAE and other Gulf countries in the past, accusing them of killing hundreds of women over activities such as eloping, fraternising with men or anything of a similar nature which could be seen as bringing “dishonour” upon the family.

The Gulf country has also warned men of harassing women or stalking them, adding that those found guilty of the offenses will be punished. “There will be tougher punishments for men who subject women to harassment of any kind, which is thought to cover street harassment or stalking,” The Nationalreported.

The government defended the overhauling of Islamic laws, saying that it was an attempt to consolidate “tolerance principles” into the country’s laws and ensure a better investment environment.

“I could not be happier for these new laws that are progressive and proactive,” said Emirati film-maker Abdallah Al Kaabi. “2020 has been a tough and transformative year for the UAE.”

Alcohol consumption allowed

The legal reforms have also done away with penalties for consuming, selling and possessing alcohol for those 21 and over, according to the government.

In the past, individuals needed to have a liquor license to keep alcohol in their homes or to buy it or transport the product. The new law will make room for Muslims, who couldn’t previously consume alcoholic beverages as they were not permitted to have licenses, to drink it freely.

The developments are also significant as they occur right before the UAE is expected to host the World Expo where an expected 25 million visitors are expected to arrive in the Gulf country and ensure a flurry of economic activities.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan congratulated US President-elect Joe Biden and vice president-elect, Kamala Harris, for winning the US election 2020.

In a tweet on Saturday night, the premier said he looked forward to working with the American president on ending “illegal tax havens & stealth of nation’s wealth by corrupt leaders”.

“Congratulations @JoeBiden & @KamalaHarris. Look forward to President Elect Biden’s Global Summit on Democracy & working with him to end illegal tax havens & stealth of nation’s wealth by corrupt leaders. We will also continue to work with US for peace in Afghanistan & in the region,” he tweeted.

Joe Biden to become 46th US president

Joe Biden defeated US President Donald Trump in the US election 2020 after the Democrat won the state of Pennsylvania Saturday which got him 20 more electoral college votes, enabling him to cross the required 270 to hit 284 votes. Later, he won Nevada, which added six more to his count, propelling him to 290.

A centrist who promises to bring calm to Washington after four turbulent years under Trump, Biden is the oldest man to win the presidency — a position he twice sought unsuccessfully during his long political career, before being elected vice president to Barack Obama in 2008.

Following the Pennsylvania result, the President-elect issued a statement, saying he is “honoured” that America has chosen him to lead “our great country”.

“The work ahead of us will be hard, but I promise you this: I will be a President for all Americans — whether you voted for me or not,” the statement added.

“I will keep the faith that you have placed in me.”

Biden is also Delaware’s longest-serving senator.

Throughout his campaign, Biden had argued that the “soul of the nation” is at stake, and has promised that he would seek to heal a country fractured by Trump’s presidency.

Washington almost runs out of champagne as people celebrate Joe Biden’s win

Washington : Joe Biden´s win in the election to become the 46th President of the United States on Saturday was celebrated across the country by Democrat supporters, leading to a shortage of champagne in the capital Washington as some stores almost ran out of stock.

It seemed many were ready to toast an end to a tumultuous four years under President Donald Trump.

Calvert and Woodley, known for its selection of wines from around the world, sold up to 75 per cent more bottles than a usual Saturday, according to store employees.

Store salesman Mark, who did not provide his last name, said hundreds of bottles had been sold.

“People want to celebrate,” he said.

His colleague Janis said, “I bought 20 for myself.”

Dressed in a Biden-Harris t-shirt and with a Biden-Harris sign in her hand, Juanita was one of the many customers in search of the bubbly.

“I´m so happy. It´s an amazing day for democracy,” she said while choosing a bottle.

At Magruder´s, a wine shop in the residential district of Chevy Chase in business since 1845, the shelves were emptied quickly and employees had to fetch reserve cases of champagne.

“People buy two or three bottles. It´s very unusual,” said a cashier. “People are so happy today.”

And they were obviously not concerned with the price. Bottles of champagne typically sell for around $40 dollars (33 euros) to start.

Opposition’s remarks about first lady worse than Amin Ali Gandapur’s statement: Shibli Faraz

ISLAMABAD : Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Shibli Faraz on Saturday defended his cabinet member Ali Amin Gandapur for his sexist remarks against Maryam Nawaz during a PTI rally in Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B), saying that such statements are routinely made during political speeches.

Shibli said that Maryam Nawaz and other members of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) have made worse comments about the first lady, adding that the opposition has transgressed all boundaries by even criticising Pakistan’s national institutions which are deemed more important and respectful than individuals.

Speaking to a private news channel, the minister stressed that Prime Minister Imran Khan has never passed indecent remarks about women, adding that Maryam Nawaz is taking an undue benefit of being a woman.

“The media did not bat an eye when the opposition was constantly levelling baseless allegations against the first lady Bushra Bibi despite her non-political role,” he pointed out.

Shibli Faraz maintained that the government would not capitalise on the differences between the PPP and the PML-N by showing leniency towards any party in the ongoing accountability process.

He added that Jahangir Tareen is now back to Pakistan and he is ready to appear before the court as well as address media to answer all the questions related to the sugar scandal.

25 more die of coronavirus, 1,436 fresh cases surface across Pakistan

ISLAMABAD : Pakistan reported 25 more coronavirus-related fatalities during the past 24 hours, taking the death toll from the disease to 6,968.

According to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), 1,436 fresh infections emerged during this period, lifting the national tally of cases to 343,189. Around 32,350 samples were tested.

There are a total of 17,804 active cases of the coronavirus as 318,417 patients have so far recuperated from the disease.

Thus far, Sindh has reported 149,542 cases, followed by Punjab reporting 106,577 cases while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa reported 40,397, Balochistan 16,055, Islamabad 21,557, Gilgit Baltistan 4,358 and Azad Jammu and Kashmir 4,703.

US Election 2020: Biden wins presidency, defeating Trump

Democrat Joe Biden has won the White House, US media reported Saturday, defeating Donald Trump and ending a presidency that convulsed American politics, shocked the world and left the United States more divided than at any time in decades.

CNN, NBC News and CBS News called the race in Biden’s favor just before 11:30 am (1630 GMT) as an insurmountable lead in Pennsylvania took the 77-year-old over the top in the state-by-state count that decides the presidency.

Trump had no immediate reaction to the announcement, but as Biden’s lead grew during vote counts since Tuesday’s election, the Republican president lashed out with unsubstantiated claims of fraud and claimed, falsely, that he had won.

Earlier Saturday, as he headed to his golf course in Virginia, he repeated this, tweeting: “I WON THIS ELECTION, BY A LOT!”

However, the result now condemns 74-year-old Trump to becoming the first one-term president since George H. W. Bush at the start of the 1990s.

Biden, who got the votes of a record more than 74 million people, was hunkered down with his running mate Kamala Harris, in his home town of Wilmington, Delaware.

Late Friday he delivered an address urging Americans to “come together as a nation and heal.”

The Secret Service has already begun intensifying its protective bubble around the president-elect, who will be inaugurated on January 20.

A centrist who promises to bring calm to Washington after four turbulent years under Trump, Biden is the oldest man to win the presidency — a position he twice sought unsuccessfully during his long political career, before being elected vice president to Barack Obama in 2008.

Harris, a senator and former California attorney general, will make history as the first Black woman to enter the White House in either of the two top jobs. At 56, she is seen as a leading contender to succeed Biden and try to become the first female US president.

Azerbaijan’s Ombudsman appeals to int’l organizations over Armenian eco-terrorism

BAKU, NOV 7 – Sabina Aliyeva, Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of Azerbaijan has appealed to the international organizations concerning the eco-terrorism of Armenia in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan and its intentional fires aimed at destruction of forests of Shusha.

On 5 November 2001, November 6 was declared as the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict in accordance with the UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/56/4.

Unfortunately, it should be said that ecological terror does not bypass Azerbaijan either. As a result of the continued around thirty-year military aggression of Armenia, the nature, biological diversity, water reservoirs of Azerbaijan, as well as the environment of the areas under the occupation have been seriously affected, which consequently, caused to destruction and severe damage of the environment.

As a result of military operations and use of internationally prohibited weapons by Armenian armed forces, not merely the natural environment has been exposed to physical and chemical pollution, but various species of rare plants and animals, flora and fauna biodiversity have been destroyed.  Chemical pollution of fresh water sources resulted in violation of self-regulation process in rivers and lakes, as a result of which water ponds become more hazardous and dead zone.

Not surprisingly yet in 2006 the UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/60/285 on “The situation in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan” has also called for assessment of and counteraction to short and long-term environmental degradation of the region.

In 2016 Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe adopted Resolution No.2085 titled “Inhabitants of frontier regions of Azerbaijan are deliberately deprived of water”, demanding the immediate withdrawal of Armenian armed forces from the concerned region and allowing access by independent engineers and hydrologists to carry out a detailed survey on the spot.

Within this period of time, natural resources in the occupied areas of Azerbaijan have been plundered, 163 mineral resources deposits, including gold, mercury, copper, lead, zinc, coal and others, also forest  cover, rare trees have been subjected to illegal exploitation by Armenia.

Starting from September 27, 2020, Armenian army continues its crimes against peace and humanity targeting the densely populated civilian settlements, social cultural and strategic objects of Azerbaijan by using heavy artillery special missile systems and banned weapons.

In response to another provocation and the continued occupation by Armenia, since 27 September 2020, Azerbaijani military successfully continued its counter-offensive operations to restore its territorial integrity in conformity with international law and universally recognized state borders as per Article 51 of the UN Charter and four relevant UNSC Resolutions (1993).

Targeting areas far from the frontline and the civilians who are not direct part of active hostilities and killing of many peaceful citizens, including children and women and even, shelling of historical, cultural and religious monuments, cemeteries with ballistic missiles and artillery are only one part of the crimes committed by Armenian armed forces.

The position of the Republic of Azerbaijan is based on the Article 51 of the UN Charter, four relevant UNSC Resolutions (1993) and the norms of international humanitarian law.

Due to continuing nearly 30-year eco-terrorism committed by Armenia in the occupied areas of Azerbaijan, at the present, a rare forest cover is being destroyed through deliberately firing the wild forests of Shusha with the use of toxic and difficult to extinguish substances.

The destruction of a unique ecosystem with a total area of more than 8,000 hectares, consisting of valuable and perennial dense forests of oak, juniper, beech, hornbeam, pine, ash, and walnut, is a hardest blow to endemic biodiversity. Hence, this means serious violations of the international treaties in relation to the protection of the environment, including the UN Convention on the Prohibition of military or any other hostile use of environmental modification techniques, to which Armenia is also a party. According to experts’ opinion, forest fires caused by white phosphorus bombs cannot be extinguished and putting out such fires naturally is not also possible, and so, such fires last long. This is environmental terrorism.

Taking into consideration all the above-mentioned facts, on November 6-the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict, we call on international organizations, including all stakeholders acting for ecology and environmental protection to take all feasible measures in order to stop and to prevent the environmental terrorism committed and currently being continued by Armenia and to establish international legal responsibility of the aggressor State to prevent its recurrence.

This Appeal is addressed to the United Nations Secretary-General, United Nations Security Council, United Nations Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights, United Nations Office of High Commissioner for Refugees, United Nations Human Rights Council, the United Nations Children’s Fund, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, United Nations Economic and Social Council, United Nations Development Programme, European Union, Council of Europe, Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, International and European Ombudsman Institutions, Asian Ombudsman Association, Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Ombudsman Association of its member states, Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, European Network of Ombudspersons for Children, International Peace Bureau, different ombudsmen and national human rights institutions, embassies of the Republic of Azerbaijan in foreign countries and the foreign embassies in Azerbaijan,  the Azerbaijani Diasporas and also to international environmental organizations.
