UAE suspends issuance of visit visas to 12 countries including Pakistan, says FO

ISLAMABAD – The United Arab Emirates has temporarily suspended the issuance of visit visas to a dozen countries, including Pakistan until further notice, Foreign Office Spokesperson Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri confirmed on Wednesday.

The decision by the UAE authorities is “believed to be related to the second wave of Covid-19”, Chaudhri said in a statement.

“We are seeking official confirmation from the concerned UAE authorities in this regard,” he said.

In a statement, Chaudhri clarified that the suspension will not apply to visas that have already been issued.

In June, when cases in Pakistan were on the rise, UAE airline Emirates had announced temporary suspension of passenger services from Pakistan till July 3. The decision came after around 30 Pakistanis who arrived in Hong Kong onboard an Emirates flight tested positive for the virus. The airline resumed its flights in July.

In August, Kuwait’s aviation banned commercial flights to 31 countries, including Pakistan, regarded as ‘high risk’ due to the spread of the coronavirus

The number of infections has been rising in Pakistan since late last month and authorities have declared that the country was witnessing the second wave of Covid-19.

For the past six days, Pakistan has recorded more than 2,000 daily cases of the novel coronavirus and officials have warned that the positivity rate of the disease has increased, especially in major cities including Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Faisalabad, Hyderabad etc.

On Monday, Prime Minister Imran Khan had urged the people to “act as a nation” in order to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus.

The premier announced new restrictions on public events, including the suspension of his party’s political rallies, and stressed the implementation of mask-wearing and social distancing to control the spread of the virus.

“This is the time to take precautions. If we do, we can slow down the virus. Just like earlier we were saved due to following precautions, that time has come again,” he said, noting that Covid-19 cases in Pakistan had increased by four times in the past two weeks.

Pak, South Africa enjoy excellent, cordial bilateral relations: Ambassador

ISLAMABAD, NOV 18 (DNA) – “Pakistan and South Africa enjoy excellent and cordial bilateral relations. This partnership has evolved over the years, expanding to include strong people-to-people links and new and exciting opportunities.”

This was stated by Ambassador Mthuthuzeli Madikiza, the High Commissioner of the Republic of South Africa to Pakistan during his Web-Talk on ‘South Africa’s Perspective on Evolving Geo-Economic Trends and Pakistan South Africa Economic Ties.’

The event was organized by the Centre for Middle East and Africa (CMEA) at the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) today under its Ambassadors’ Platform Series.

Ambassador Madikiza welcomed the establishment of CMEA as a Centre of Excellence within the ISSI and stated that he looked forward to closer cooperation and interactions on issues of mutual interest.

He said stronger ties and increased collaboration between the African Continent and partner countries in the Asian region have been growing steadily over the years. This has also strengthened the notion of progressive internationalism, which entails opposition to the perpetuation of the legacy of global imperialism, colonialism, racism, the dominance of the global North over the South, as well as global structural inequality and poverty.

Talking about South Africa and Pakistan’s bilateral ties, he remarked that both sides enjoy excellent bilateral relations. According to him, one of the top priorities is to expand economic ties as South Africa considers Pakistan an important market for business-to-business cooperation.

Both countries also enjoy considerable cooperation in defence production, with substantial opportunities for a strategic and mutually beneficial partnership. He was of the view that there were several areas for further expansion of economic ties, which includes higher education, science and technology, health, energy, agriculture as well as the minerals sector.

Earlier, in his welcome remarks, Ambassador Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry, Director General ISSI, expressed that, the present government of Pakistan attaches high priority to economic diplomacy particularly with Africa.

CMEA was created out of this desire by Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, to have stronger economic and commercial ties with Africa. While praising South Africa as one of the leading economies within the African Continent, Ambassador Chaudhry said that Pakistan envisages a closer cooperation with South Africa in future.

Earlier Ms. Amina Khan, Director Centre for Middle East and Africa (CMEA) in her welcome Remarks stated that Pakistan and South Africa ties are highly valued since the establishment of their diplomatic ties in 1994. South Africa and Pakistan share several commonalities such their struggle against colonialism and the vision of the late Nelson Mandela. South Africa is one of the top trading partners of Pakistan from the African continent.

Thus, extension and consolidation of trade and economic relations between two countries is pivotal. South Africa considers Pakistan an important market for business cooperation and is keen to further enhance the volume of bilateral trade. Under its ‘Engage Africa Policy,’ Pakistan looks forward to further deepening its political, and economic ties with South Africa.

In his concluding remarks, Ambassador Khalid Mahmood, Chairman BOG ISSI, stated that Pakistan has always been at the forefront of independence struggles of African countries, and has facilitated various African Liberation leaders.

He highlighted how the current government of Pakistan is laying special emphasis on building ties with the African continent through its “Engage Africa” policy. He also said that from the African continent opportunities like AFCFTA and Vision 2063 are welcoming developments.

He concluded by saying that both Pakistan and South Africa have great potential to work together for maximum mutual benefits. = DNA

PPP rejects PM’s offer on electoral reforms

ISLAMABAD, NOV 18 (DNA) – Rejecting PM’s offer to the opposition to discuss electoral reforms, Parliamentary Leader of the PPP in the Senate, Senator Sherry Rehman said, “The PTI led government should first accept responsibility for rigging elections in Gilgit Baltistan and then talk about reforms.

This sudden interest in electoral reforms seems extremely dubious when all these years they have done nothing about it”.

She said, “The government openly violated election rules. According to the Election Act, 2017, the federal government is not allowed to campaign on the ground. On top of all this, the PM also decided to add to this flagrant rigging and misuse of federal resources by landing in GB to campaign few weeks ago. It is shocking that Form 45s were filled even before polling ending. This was blatant rigging by PTI”.

“A parliamentary committee was formed earlier for comprehensive reforms but instead of going through that, they are now talking about electoral reforms.

This just reflects the federal government’s non-serious attitude. When it came to Kashmir or Gilgit Baltistan, PM did not take the opposition into confidence but now he wants to talk to the opposition to get these reforms passed?” she questioned.

She said, “This government was formed as a result of RTS failure. They are unable to control inflation, how will they handle e-voting? There are reports that e-voting is prone to hacking and not completely secure.

Accountability starts at home and the government should first focus on what they have done in the GB elections before talking about reforms”.

Parliamentary Leader of the PPP in the Senate, Senator Sherry Rehman concluded by saying, “This government has no credibility. Tabahi sarkar is just finding ways to complicate and rig the elections. We are well aware of their intentions and incompetency”.=DNA
