Pakistan deeply concerned over deteriorating health conditions of incarcerated Kashmiri leadership

Islamabad,28 Dec 2020 : Pakistan is deeply concerned over the continued incarceration and deteriorating health conditions of Kashmiri leaders including founding leader of Kashmiri organization “Dukhtaran-i-Millat” and the “Iron Lady of Kashmir”, Ms. Asiya Andrabi; leader and founder of the Jammu & Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party, Mr. Shabbir Ahmed Shah;and prominent leaders such as Mr. Yasin Malik; MasaratAlam Bhat; Mohammad Ashraf Sehraie and others, who have been languishing under squalid conditions in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic in infamous Tihar and other jails.

Many other senior Kashmiri leaders including Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq remain under house arrest.

These Kashmiri leaders have been illegally arrested over malicious, false and fabricated charges by the Indian Government through invoking draconian laws promulgated in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu & Kashmir (IIOJK).

Imprisonment and torturing of Kashmiri leaders on the basis of their political ideology and struggle against illegal Indian occupation is a true reflection of the extremist mindset of the RSS-BJP regime which has no respect for the human rights of the Kashmiri people.

Pakistan calls upon the international community, particularly the United Nations, ICRC and human rights and humanitarian organizations, to take notice of the Indian government’s inhuman treatment of the Kashmiri leaders and raise its voice for their immediate release from illegal Indian detention.

China to remain top priority of Pakistan’s foreign policy in 2021 FM

ISLAMABAD, Dec. 28 : Friendship and enhanced partnership with Iron Brother China will remain the top priority of Pakistan’s foreign policy in the year 2021, the country’s top diplomat said.

Speaking to Gwadar Pro, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said Iron Brother China was a ‘permanent special part’ of Pakistan’s foreign policy.

“China is our great friend. We already have very close ties but we will try to make it even more fruitful in 2021. China is always on our top priorities list. This trend will never change. Every year, we (Pakistan and China) will only enhance cooperation,” he said.

Accordind to the Foreign Minister, during the last decades, Pakistan and China had come very close diplomatically, strategically and in the business sector.

“We are already cooperating in all sectors. In 2021, we will try to enhance trade relations and try to complete the CPEC (China-Pakistan Economic Corridor) projects on time,” he added.

FM Qureshi said the whole country was unanimous on Pakistan-China ties. “On China (ties), the whole country is one unit. There is never any question about it. All parties have the same point of view and all of them want to see the two Iron Brothers grow together,” he maintained.

In recent years, Pakistan-China relations witnessed a qualitative transformation as the bilateral ties expanded from defence to the economic sphere.

The cooperation under the framework of CPEC is increasing China’s investments in Pakistan’s energy and infrastructure sectors. Expanded avenues of bilateral cooperation have led to the emergence of new dynamics in bilateral relations.

With increased inter-dependence, both countries are also navigating major power international politics.

Beijing and Islamabad have increased their coordination for peace and stability in Afghanistan as well as at the multilateral forums including the United Nations (UN) and Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).

Pakistan-China relations have been resilient for decades despite monumental shifts and transformations in the geostrategic landscape of South Asia.

Islamabad-Beijing ties have maintained their strategic direction and stability due to the convergence of interests and mutual trust.

With the commencement of development work under CPEC, a flagship project of Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), both countries also increased their strategic coordination and converged on emerging issues in the regional security environments and at multilateral forums.

In recent years CPEC-centric cooperation has been the focus of scholarly debate and analysis. Beijing has repeatedly emphasized that the Pakistan-China relationship was a ‘model inter-state relationship’ to be emulated by other states.

Covid: South Africa passes one million infections as cases surge

Cap Town : South Africa has become the first country on the continent to register more than one million Covid-19 cases.

It comes just days after authorities confirmed that a new, faster-spreading, coronavirus variant had been detected.

Some hospitals and medical centres have reported a huge rise in admissions, putting a heavy strain on resources.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is widely expected to announce tougher restrictions to prevent the virus from spreading further.

The grim milestone was announced on Sunday by South Africa’s Health Minister, Zweli Mkhize. The country has now confirmed 1,004,413 Covid-19 infections and 26,735 deaths since the outbreak began in March.

Last week, South Africa recorded a daily average of 11,700 new infections – a rise of 39% from the previous week – and from Wednesday to Friday the daily number of new cases was above 14,000.

The new coronavirus variant – known as 501.V2 – is believed to be driving the surge in infections. It was identified by a network of South African scientists in the Eastern Cape province and then rapidly spread to other parts of the country.

Earlier this week, the UK banned travel from South Africa because of the new variant. Another new Covid variant has already been detected in the UK, although they have evolved separately.

Both have a mutation – called N501Y – which is in a crucial part of the virus that it uses to infect the body’s cells.

After South Africa, the worst hit country on the African continent is Morocco which has seen 432,079 cases and 7,240 deaths. They are followed by Egypt with 131,315 cases and 7,352 deaths and Tunisia with 130,230 infections and 4,426 deaths.

In another Covid developments around the world

The ambulance service in the UK capital, London, received as many emergency calls on Saturday as it did at the height of the first wave of the pandemic, the BBC has learned. The new variant is said to be the cause of the increased demand.

Japan imposed a ban on most non-resident foreign nationals entering the country following confirmation of its first cases of the new variant that emerged in the UK. The ban will remain in place until at least the end of January. On Saturday, Japan registered a record 3,881 infections including a new record for the capital, Tokyo, of 949.

The European Union began a co-ordinated vaccine rollout, in what the bloc’s most senior official said was a “touching moment of unity”. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine had been delivered to all 27 member states. Some countries began administering the jabs on Saturday, saying they were not prepared to wait another day.

South Korea reported its first cases of the UK variant in three people who arrived from London on 22 December, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency said on Monday.

In the US, top government scientist Anthony Fauci reiterated warnings that there could be a surge in cases as a result of families getting together over the holiday season – despite being urged not to do so. “I share the concern of President-elect (Joe) Biden that as we get into the next few weeks, it [the outbreak] might actually get worse,” he told CNN.

IPL team announced instead of ICC Teams of the Decade: Shoaib Akhtar

Islamabad : Former Pakistani fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar took a jibe at the International Cricket Council (ICC) after its announcement for the Teams of the Decade, saying that the international cricket body has announced an Indian Premier League (IPL) team instead of a world cricket team.

“I think ICC has forgotten that Pakistan is also ICC’s member and plays cricket internationally. They missed out on an ace Pakistani batsman like Babar Azam who is already the top T20 batsman. They did not even include a single Pakistani player,” the speedster criticised ICC in a video on his Youtube channel.

A day earlier, ICC had announced their Teams of the Decade (TOTD) in all three formats of the game. Unfortunately, no cricketer from Pakistan was included in the list which upset several Pakistani cricketers.

The different playing XIs announced by the governing body is part of the ICC Awards, a programme aimed at celebrating outstanding cricketers and moments over the last ten years.

Reacting to ICC’s decision, Akhtar grilled the international cricket body for overlooking the world’s top cricketers like Australian fast bowlers Jeff Thompson, Danis Lillee, West Indies big five, and Pakistan’s Waqar Younis, and Wasim Akram.

“These people left because cricket was materialised. Why did you give permission to start 10 leagues? You gave permission in order to rake money out of cricket,” he lambasted.

Censuring ICC for stringent rules and regulations, the legendary bowler said that fast bowlers should be allowed to express themselves in the field. “What is the fun in watching cricket if Sachin vs Shoaib is not happening in the field?” he asked.

He concluded the video by saying that the purpose of the video was just to send ICC a reminder that they did not have to announce an IPL team while sidelining the world’s top cricket players.

PM Imran Khan Billion Tree Honey Initiative highly appreciable: Cheng Xizhong

BEIJING, Dec 28 : China highly appreciates Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Billion Tree Honey Initiative and believes that China and Pakistan can share experience and technology in agricultural cooperation under the framework of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Cheng Xizhong, visiting professor at Southwest University of Political Science and Law said while commenting on launch Billion Tree Honey Initiative by Prime Minister Imran Khan to promote tree plantation and honey production in the country.

As far as I understand, PM Imran Khan has actually put forward a very important issue of forestry ecological engineering, which is also a major issue of scientific development of the national economy,he said in his article published by China Economic Net (CEN) on Monday.

Addressing the launching ceremony in Islamabad, PM Imran Khan said that Billion Tree Honey Initiative will help control environmental degradation, including enhancing forest cover, cleaning river, protecting ground water from pollution, and checking air pollution.

He said it is the responsibility of his government to hand over a clean Pakistan to younger generations. , The Prime Minister added that Billion Tree Honey Initiative will also help enhance exports, and create job opportunities for the youth.

According to Billion Tree Honey Initiative, plantation of plants including Kao, Phulai, Ber, Kikar and other bee flora is encouraged.

A mechanism has been devised for encouraging plantation of bee flora, improving quality of honey production, and providing assistance to the bee keepers through provision of financial resources.

He said, forestry ecological engineering refers to the design, construction and regulation of the integrated eco-engineering system with woody plants as the main body according to the principles of ecology, agroforestry and ecological cybernetics. Its purpose is to protect, improve and sustainably make the best use of natural resources.

Forest is the cradle of civilization. It not only has multiple ecological functions such as carbon fixation and oxygen release, water and soil conservation, wind and sand prevention, pollution reduction, air purification, climate regulation and biodiversity maintenance, but also has multiple economic functions such as timber production, economic fruits, biological medicinal materials and biomass energy, as well as beautifying the environment, promoting employment, poverty alleviation and other diverse social functions.

Throughout history and from all cultures, bees have always been the embodiment of diligence. There is an inseparable relationship among bees, trees and human beings. Albert Einstein once predicted that if there are no bees in the world, human beings can only survive for four years at most, he added.

Bee breeding can maintain the ecological balance and diversity of plant species, and improve the yield and quality of crops. Bee breeding is generally not restricted by urban and rural areas, and does not occupy arable land, and the value of bee products is stable, which can increase the income of bee farmers.

Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner once created a theory called biodynamics. The theory holds that agriculture, forestry and animal husbandry should adopt a three-dimensional mode of production, which should not only meet the subjective spiritual and ethical requirements, but also meet the objective needs of the ecological environment.

This means more natural ways of planting, such as raising bees in trees, to create a sustainable ecosystem.

At the same time, those trees that need bee pollination will also attract other insects, so as to establish a more balanced and healthier ecosystem in the trees and reduce the use of chemicals, he concluded.
