Putin, Aliyev, Pashinyan to hold talks on Karabakh in Moscow on January 11, Kremlin says

MOSCOW, Jan 10 – Trilateral talks of Russian President Vladimir Putin, his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev, and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan will be held on Monday, January 11, in Moscow at the initiative of the Russian head of state. The sides plan to review the implementation of the November 9, 2000 statement of the three leaders on Nagorno-Karabakh and discuss steps to resolve the regional issues, the Kremlin press service reported on Sunday.

“At the initiative of the president of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, on January 11, 2021, in Moscow, trilateral talks will be held of the President of the Russian Federation, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, and the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan. It is planned to review the implementation of the November 9, 2000 statement of leaders of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia on Nagorno-Karabakh and discuss further steps on resolving the issues present in the region,” the statement said.

According to the press service, a particular attention will be paid to the issues of aid to residents of districts affected by the military action as well as of unblocking and developing trade and economic and transport connections.

Additionally, separate conversations of Vladimir Putin with Ilham Aliyev and Nikol Pashinyan are planned.

Renewed clashes between Azerbaijan and Armenia erupted on September 27, with intense battles raging in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh. The conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, a disputed territory that had been part of Azerbaijan before the Soviet Union break-up, but primarily populated by ethnic Armenians, broke out in February 1988 after the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region announced its withdrawal from the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic. In 1992-1994, tensions boiled over and exploded into large-scale military action for control over the enclave and seven adjacent territories after Azerbaijan lost control of them.

On November 9, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed a joint statement on a complete ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh starting from November 10. The Russian leader said the Azerbaijani and Armenian sides would maintain the positions that they had held and Russian peacekeepers would be deployed to the region.

ISLAMABAD, JAN 10 (DNA) – Seven dedicated professionals serving the mountain communities and putting their best efforts for the conservation and development of mountains’ natural resources will be awarded with the 2nd Pakistan Mountains Pride Awards. A grand ceremony will be organized by the Development Communications Network (Devcom-Pakistan) in Islamabad with the support of development partners and organizations serving the land and people of northern highlands.

Devcom-Pakistan launched Pakistan Mountains Pride Awards in 2019 to recognize the services par excellence of the individuals that they rendered over the years to the mountains of Pakistan and its communities. The significance of the awards is that they are titled after the names of the living legends to recognize their lifelong services to the mountains and its communities in different sectors.

Devcom-Pakistan Executive Director Munir Ahmed is the founder of Pakistan Mountains Pride Awards (PAMPA) and Pakistan Mountain Festival (PMF), the 10th edition of which was concluded in December 2020 despite the Covid-19 pandemic. Talking about the objective of the PAMPA, he said that we need to recognize the services of individuals and organizations that have played their key role to inspire others. It is essential to attract others to follow the footprints of the living legends and award recipients to contribute their services to the mountains and its communities.

Not only conservation and development of mountain resources, we also need to encourage people promoting mountain culture, crafts, agricultural and horticultural products. The stakeholders downstream shall provide marketing and networking opportunities to the communities and their local organizations to contribute their bit of efforts to uplift the life and livelihood for the locals. We all need to highlight the importance of the mountains as a hub of natural resources for the people living there and downstream, and need to inculcate informed policy-making for the conservation of mountain resources by creating awareness and networking among the key stakeholders.

He said Pakistan is blessed with 11 ranges of mountains including three of the world’s largest namely Karakoram, Hnidukush and Himalaya. All the mountain ranges have their own characteristics and treasures of natural resources. But, most of them remained untapped over the years. Same is the case of human resources – the mountain communities. They had been deprived of social and infrastructural development for long. Then, some individuals and organizations started working for the uplift of the communities to support the Pakistan government’s initiatives. They played their role in discovering the potential of the mountains and its communities through various empowerment and engagement initiatives.

PML-N not to field candidates against PPP in Sindh by-elections

ISLAMABAD, Jan 09 (DNA): The PML-N has announced that it will not field
candidates against the PPP in by-elections for Sindh Assembly seats.

The by-elections on Sindh Assembly seats PS-52 Umerkot, PS-43 Sanghar
and PS-88 Karachi are scheduled for February 16. The announcement was
made after a PML-N meeting in Lahore, presided over by its
Vice-President Maryam Nawaz and Secretary General Ahsan Iqbal.

The PML-N will contest the by-elections jointly with the Pakistan
Democratic Movement, the meeting decided. The PML-N is hopeful that PDM
parties will support it in by-elections on Punjab Assembly seats
previously won by the party, Ahsan Iqbal told reporters. He said his
party would fully participate in the Senate election too.

Iqbal criticised the ruling PTI saying that it had taken an NRO in the
foreign funding case. “The London plan was executed through foreign
funding,” he said of the PTI and PAT meetings in London ahead of the
2014 sit-ins in Islamabad. “They kept creating unrest in the country
through Indian and Israeli funding.” About the prime minister’s Quetta
visit, the PML-N leader shamed the government for linking a human
tragedy to a sect.

“If Imran Khan completed his five-year term, then no one would be
willing to run for the prime minister’s post,” he said. Iqbal said the
Model Town incident was a conspiracy related to the success of the
London plan. “The same hands were behind the Model Town incident that
were behind the [2014] long march,” he said.
