Chairman WAPDA assures to hike hydro power share to 50 percent by 2050

ISLAMABAD, SEPT 28 (DNA) – Lt. Gen. Muzammil Hussain (Retd), Chairman WAPDA said that hydro power share in total energy mix would be increased to 50 percent by 2050 to provide cheap energy that would give boost to business activities and accelerate economic growth.

He said this while addressing the business community during his visit to Islamabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

He gave a detailed presentation to the business community on Diamer Bhasha, Dasu, Mohmand and other dams being constructed by the WAPDA.

He said that the business community deserved a lot of appreciation as despite high energy cost and power shortage, they have been doing a tremendous job to promote business activities and run the wheel of the economy.

Chairman WAPDA said that average water storage capacity in the world was 40 percent as compared to less than 10 percent in Pakistan and WAPDA was taking many initiatives to improve water storage capacity by building more dams in the country. He said that WAPDA pushed the government to negotiate with IPPs and if new terms with IPPs were implemented, it would save Rs.700-800 billion per annum.

He said that Diamer Bhasha dam has created tremendous opportunities for the business community, especially of steel cement, transport and other sectors and they should fully capitalize on these opportunities for business growth.

He said that unbundling of WAPDA was strategically a bad decision as it created disharmony in decision making in the power sector and gave rise to circular debt. However, he said that the government was looking at these issues seriously and hopefully would make some good decisions.

He said that the business community should further enhance its interface with WAPDA that would pave the way for better business growth and bring prosperity to Pakistan.

Speaking at the occasion, President, Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry appreciated the efforts of Chairman WAPDA for building dams and generating hydropower that would bring down the cost of doing business. He said that electricity was a key raw material for many industries and hiking hydropower share would give boost to industrialization and business activities. He also lauded WAPDA for getting a stable rating from 3 rating agencies of the world that was a great achievement for it.

Mian Akram Farid, Chairman Founder Group said that high power cost has made the domestic industry uncompetitive for exports and stressed that major focus should be on hydropower to reduce production cost. He said that Pakistan has 250 locations for setting up small power plants, but the license award process was not fair. He said that the performance of Discos should be improved and the fuel adjustment charges system should be revised to save industry from extra burden.

Tahir Abbasi Senior Vice President ICCI thanked Chairman WAPDA for visiting the Chamber and giving a comprehensive presentation to the business community. Saif ur Rehman Khan Vice President ICCI, Mian Shaukat Masud, Ms. Fatima Azeem, Khalid Malik, Malik Sohail Hussain, Babar Chaudhry Khalid Chaudhry and others also spoke at the occasion and gave many suggestions for further improving current energy sector.=DNA

Saudi Arabia sends world’s first shipment of Blue Ammonia to Japan

The world’s first shipment of blue ammonia is on its way to Japan from Saudi Arabia, marking a significant step towards a sustainable hydrogen usage and a circular carbon economy.

Some 40 tons of high-grade blue ammonia already dispatched for use in zero-carbon power generation, a successful demonstration of the supply network from Saudi Arabia to Japan.

The announcement comes amid growing appreciation of the role hydrogen will play in the global energy system. As per oil giant Aramco, ammonia, a compound consisting of three parts hydrogen and one part nitrogen, can contribute to addressing the challenge of meeting the world’s growing energy needs in a reliable, affordable and sustainable manner.

Aramco and the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan (IEEJ), in partnership with SABIC, have successfully demonstrated the production and shipment of blue ammonia from Saudi Arabia to Japan with support from the Japanese Ministry of Economy.

The blue ammonia supply network demonstration spanned the full value chain; including the conversion of hydrocarbons to hydrogen and then to ammonia, as well as the capture of associated carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

It overcame challenges associated with the shipping of blue ammonia to Japan for use in power plants, with 30 tons of CO2 captured during the process designated for use in methanol production at SABIC’s Ibn-Sina facility and another 20 tons of captured CO2 being used for Enhanced Oil Recovery at Aramco’s Uthmaniyah field.

“The use of hydrogen is expected to grow in the global energy system, and this world’s first demonstration represents an exciting opportunity for Aramco to showcase the potential of hydrocarbons as a reliable and affordable source of low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia,” said Ahmad O. Al-Khowaiter, Aramco’s Chief Technology Officer.

“Blue ammonia is critical to Japan’s zero carbon emission ambitions to sustain the balance between the environment and the economy. About 10% of power in Japan can be generated by 30 million tons of blue ammonia. We can start with co-firing blue ammonia in existing power stations, eventually transitioning to single firing with 100% blue ammonia,” informed Toyoda Masakazu, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of IEEJ.

Ammonia contains approximately 18% hydrogen by weight and is already a widely traded chemical on the world stage. It releases zero CO2 emissions when combusted in a thermal power plant and has the potential to make a significant contribution to an affordable and reliable low-carbon energy future.

UN chief urges end to fresh Armenia-Azerbaijan fighting in disputed region

UNITED NATIONS, SEPT 28 – UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said he is “extremely concerned” over renewed hostilities between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the Nagorno-Karabakh disputed region that erupted on Sunday.

According to news reports, at least 18 people have been killed along the line of contact in the worst fighting between the two former Soviet Republics in four years.

“He condemns the use of force and regrets the loss of life and the toll on the civilian population”, UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.

This latest skirmish between the two countries, which fought a war in the 1990s as the Soviet Union was dissolving, has heightened fears of instability in the South Caucasus, a region that provides crucial transit routes for gas and oil to world markets.

Both States have declared martial law and Armenia ordered the total mobilization of its military, according to media reports.

“The Secretary-General strongly calls on the sides to immediately stop fighting, de-escalate tensions and return to meaningful negotiations without delay”, Dujarric said, adding that the UN chief would be speaking to both the President of Azerbaijan and the Prime Minister of Armenia.

Armenia accused Azerbaijan of carrying out early morning air and artillery attacks on the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.

The two fought a six-year war over the region until a 1994 truce, but over the years, both countries have blamed the other for ceasefire violations in the enclave and along the border, including in July.

In recent months, more than a dozen soldiers and civilians have been killed in the struggle.

Dujarric , the UN spokesman, underscored that the Secretary-General reiterated his “full support” for the important role of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Minsk Group Co-Chairs and urged the sides to “work closely with them for an urgent resumption of dialogue without preconditions”.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has thrown its weight behind Azerbaijan following Armenia’s border violations and attacks in Upper Karabakh. “Pakistan stands with the brotherly nation of Azerbaijan and supports its right of self-defence,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

“We support Azerbaijan’s position on Nagorno-Karabakh, which is in line with several unanimously adopted UN Security Council resolutions,” it added.

Shehbaz Sharif arrested in money laundering case after LHC rejects bail

LAHORE, SEPT  –  PML-N President and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif was arrested by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Monday after the Lahore High Court rejected his bail plea in a money laundering case.

Shehbaz was taken into custody from the court’s premises, where a large number of PML-N workers and supporters had gathered ahead of the hearing.

Last week, the LHC had extended the pre-arrest bail of Shehbaz, while arguments of his counsel were in progress and had directed him to conclude his arguments in the next hearing.

During today’s proceedings, Shehbaz’s legal counsel Azam Nazir Tarar said that the PML-N president’s arrest at this stage of the case could not be justified and added: “NAB’s dishonesty is apparent everywhere.”

He said that Shehbaz was already facing two other references filed by NAB, arguing that the cases against the opposition leader were “fake”.

“Local bodies elections are coming up, the government wants Shehbaz Sharif to go to jail,” Tarar declared.

He further pointed out that though the copies of the reference had been provided, Shehbaz was yet to be indicted.

Tarar told the court that the former Punjab chief minister had done a net saving of Rs81 billion in the Orange Line Train Project and Rs400 million in the taxi project. Collectively, Tarar said, Shehbaz had saved Rs1 trillion in net savings.

In his arguments, Shehbaz’s lawyer said that the PML-N president had never received any ta-da or salary.

Reacting to Shehbaz’s arrest, PML-N vice president Maryam Nawaz, said in a tweet: “If there were accountability and justice in this country, it would not have been Shehbaz Sharif who was arrested but Asim Bajwa and his family.”

PML-N information secretary Marriyum Aurangzeb slammed the arrest, alleging it was political victimisation by the government.

“The entire nation has been handcuffed through Shehbaz’s arrest,” she said outside court, saying the arrest was a result of the “NAB-Niaz nexus”.

Meanwhile, Information Minister Shibli Faraz, while talking to a private news channel, said that the reference “should not be turned into a political case”. He added that the decision had been taken by a court and was a result of the opposition leader’s corruption.

Money laundering case

The reference mainly accuses Shehbaz of being beneficiary of assets held in the name of his family members and benamidars who had no sources to acquire such assets. It says the suspects committed offences of corruption and corrupt practices as envisaged under the provisions of the National Accountability Ordinance 1999 and money laundering as delineated in the Anti-Money Laundering Act 2010.

A total of 20 people had been nominated in the reference, including four approvers Yasir Mushtaq, Muhammad Mushtaq, Shahid Rafiq and Aftab Mahmood.

The main suspects are Shehbaz’s wife Nusrat, his sons Hamza (leader of opposition in Punjab) and Suleman (absconder), and his daughters Rabia Imran and Javeria Ali.

Asif Zardari, Faryal Talpur indicted in mega money-laundering case

ISLAMABAD : An accountability court on Monday indicted former president and PPP co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari and his sister, Faryal Talpur, in a mega money-laundering case, with the accused pleading not guilty.

Justice Azam Khan presided over the hearing in the Islamabad court where Zardari, accompanied by his daughter Asifa, and Talpur were presented. However, the PPP leader’s lawyer, Farooq H Naik, was not there reportedly due to his commitment at the Supreme Court.

The court also indicted Anwar Majeed, the head of the Omni Group and another accused in the case who appeared through a video link. Majeed, however, pleaded not guilty.

The court further indicted Majeed’s son, Abdul Ghani, who was present in the courtroom and also pleaded not guilty.

Lawyers of two others accused in the case, including former Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) chairperson Hussain Lawai and banker Taha Raza, were given a copy of the charge sheet after being indicted by the court.

It should be noted that at the last hearing, the court had dismissed Zardari’s pleas in the fake accounts cases, as well as three corruption references, and ordered he be indicted, noting that he could not be acquitted.

On the other hand, the PPP co-chairperson challenged the mega money-laundering and Park Lane reference trials in the Islamabad High Court, seeking acquittal in both.
