COVID-19 claims 26 lives, infects 1,048 more people

ISLAMABAD, Feb 15  : The national tally on Monday of total active COVID-19 cases recorded 25,747 with 1,048 more people tested positive for the deadly virus and 1,387 people recovered from the disease during the last 24 hours.

Twenty six corona patients have died during past 24 hours, 25 of them were under treatment in hospital and one in their respective quarantines or at their homes on Sunday, according to the latest update issued by the National command and Operation Centre (NCOC).

During the last 24 hours most of the deaths had occurred in the Punjab followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

Maximum ventilators were occupied in four major areas including Multan 37 percent, Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) 30 percent, Peshawar 26 percent and Lahore 37percent.

Maximum oxygen beds (alternate oxygen providing facility other than ventilator administered as per medical requirement of COVID patient) was also occupied in four major areas of Gujrat 61 percent, Peshawar 41 percent, Multan 23 percent, and Lahore 21 percent.

Around 260 ventilators were occupied elsewhere in the country while no COVID affected person was on ventilator in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Gilgit Baltistan (GB) and Balochistan.

Some 32,019 tests were conducted across the country on Sunday, including 9,252 in Sindh, 11,541 in Punjab, 6,246 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), 3,757 in Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT), 390 in Balochistan, 348 in GB, and 485 in AJK.

Around 525,997 people have recovered from the disease so far across Pakistan making it a significant count with over 90 percent recovery ratio of the affected patients.

Since the pandemic outbreak, a total of 564,077 cases were detected that also included the perished, recovered and under treatment COVID-19 patients so far, including AJK 9,487, Balochistan 18,942, GB 4,940, ICT 42,688, KP 69,990, Punjab 164,268 and Sindh 253,762.

About 12,333 deaths were recorded in country since the eruption of the contagion. Around 4,219 perished in Sindh among seven of them died during past 24 hours. Three of them died in the hospital and four out of the hospital.

5,051 in Punjab had died with 14 deaths in past 24 hours. 13 of them died in the hospital and one out of the hospital on Sunday. 1,995 in KP where four of them died in hospital on Sunday, 486 in ICT among one of them in the hospital during past 24 hours,  199 in Balochistan, 102 in GB and 281 in AJK succumbed to the deadly virus.

A total of 8,466,177 corona tests have been conducted so far, while 631 hospitals are equipped with COVID facilities. Some 2,115 corona patients were admitted in hospitals across the country.

PM thanks overseas Pakistanis for record $2bln remittances for consecutive 8 months

ISLAMABAD, Feb 15  : Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday said the country had made its record for remittances above $2 billion for eight consecutive months and acknowledged in this regard the contribution of overseas Pakistanis.

The Prime Minister mentioned that remittances from overseas Pakistanis were $2.27 billion in January, which 19 percent more than last January.

He said to date in this fiscal year, the remittances were up by 24 percent as compared to last year.

“This is a record for our country and I thank our overseas Pakistanis,” he said in a tweet.

Imran Khan said the industrial sector also showed good result with sustained growth.

“Large scale manufacturing saw another double digit growth month in December 2020 –  11.4% growth vs Dec 2019,” he said.

The cumulative growth from July to December was recorded above eight percent, he added.

Medvedev into Open quarters as he extends streak to 18

Melbourne, Feb 15  : Fourth-seed Daniil Medvedev extended his win streak to 18 matches Monday when he took just 89 minutes to blow away Mackenzie McDonald 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 and reach the quarter-finals of the Australian Open.

The world number 192 from the United States broke the Russian’s serve at 5-2 down in the first set but that was his only highlight.

“It was a great match,” said Medvedev. “I was feeling great, I mean the only time I lost serve was in the first set.”

Medvedev is into his first quarter-final at the Australian Open where he will play either countryman and ATP Cup-winning team-mate Andrey Rublev or Norway’s Casper Rudd who play later Monday.

“I’m going to be rooting for Andrey because if he wins it’s got to be at least one Russian in the semi-final,” said Medvedev.

“Casper is a great opponent so I’m going to watch the match, enjoy it, and then prepare for my next opponent.”

Medvedev’s best Grand Slam performance to date was reaching the final at the 2019 US Open.

His win streak dates back to November and included titles at the Paris 1000, the ATP Finals in London and the ATP Cup.

PIA aircraft grounded after hitting baggage tractor at Islamabad airport

ISLAMABAD : A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) aircraft was damaged after it hit a baggage tractor at New Islamabad International Airport.

A spokesperson for the national airline confirmed the accident and said the airline’s Airbus-320 has been grounded for essential repair.Sources at the airport relayed the accident took place when the aircraft was preparing to depart for Sharjah, as a result of which the plane’s VHF antenna got damaged.

The spokesperson said another flight was arranged to take passengers to Sharjah after the plane was grounded.

Earlier, an Airbus-320 of the Pakistan International Airlines was grounded after being hit by a conveyor belt vehicle at the Karachi International Airport. The airbus was grounded after it was hit by a conveyor belt vehicle and developed a fault in its engine no. 2.

The driver of the conveyor belt vehicle was suspended over his negligence.

PM Imran Khan thanks overseas Pakistanis after record rise in remittances

ISLAMABAD : Prime Minister Imran Khan has thanked overseas Pakistanis after witnessing a record rise in remittances up to $2.27 billion in January 2021.

PM Imran Khan said in his Twitter messages, ‘Good news from the industrial sector also, showing sustained growth.’

He said that the large scale manufacturing saw another double-digit growth month in December 2020 up to 11.4 per cent as compared to December 2019, whereas, July-December cumulative growth was recorded above 8 per cent.
The premier thanked overseas Pakistan after a record high remittances in the current fiscal year up to 24 per cent as compared to the last year. He said that remittances from overseas Pakistanis were $2.27 billion in January, up 19 per cent over January 2020, the eighth consecutive month of remittances above $2 billion.

The data released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) earlier in the day showed that workers’ remittances exceeded $2 billion for a record eighth consecutive month in January 2021.

Pakistan received $2.3 billion worth of remittances last month, up by 19 per cent as compared to January 2020. However, remittances slightly decreased as compared to $2.4 billion in December 2020.

On a cumulative basis, workers’ remittances reached $16.5 billion during Jul-Jan FY21, registering a 24 per cent increase over the corresponding year of last year.

A large part of workers’ remittances during Jul-Jan FY21 was sourced from Saudi Arabia ($4.5 billion), United Arab Emirates ($3.4 billion), United Kingdom ($2.2 billion) and United States ($1.4 billion).

“This sustained increase in workers’ remittances largely reflects the growing use of banking channel that is attributed to continuous efforts by Government and SBP to attract inflows through the official channel, limited cross border travel amid the second wave of COVID-19 and flexible exchange rate regime,” the SBP said.

Fresh protests in Myanmar after junta cuts off internet, deploys tanks

In Myanmar, fresh protests have erupted in all major cities on Monday, following an overnight internet blackout and the deployment of troops on the streets.

In city of Yangon, hundreds of engineering and technology students gathered in the north of the city, demanding the release of former leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Local media outlets said at least five journalists monitoring the protest had been detained and published pictures of some people wounded in the incident.

A joint statement from the US, British and European Union ambassadors urged security forces not to harm civilians.

Development of backward areas Govt’s top priority: Punjab CM

Lahore : Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar says development of backward areas is top priority of the government and composite development was the right of every region of Punjab.

Chairing a meeting in Bahawalpur, he is personally monitoring the development projects across the province.

He directed the concerned authorities to ensure the timely completion of projects besides paying special attention to maintain the standard in these projects of public welfare. He directed authorities concerned to personally visit and review the on-ground progress of the projects.

On the occasion, he was briefed about development projects and law and order situation of Bahawalpur Division.

Meanwhile, in a statement, Chief Minister Punjab Sardar Usman Buzdar said potential in tourism can be used for strengthening the economy.

He said tourism sector would be promoted by ensuring basic amenities in far-flung areas like Marri, Koh-e-Suleman and Cholistan which will create employment opportunities for local people.

He mentioned that in order to provide water in these remote areas, construction of underground storage water tanks should be considered.

Last day to submit nomination papers for Senate polls

ISLAMABAD : The deadline to submit the nomination papers for the upcoming Senate polls falls today (Monday).

As per the schedule, the list of contesting candidates will be published tomorrow and the scrutiny of nomination papers to be held on Wednesday and Thursday.The candidates can file appeals against acceptance or rejection of nomination papers on Saturday and the last date for disposing of these appeals is the 23rd.

The candidates can withdraw their nomination papers on February 25.

Polling for the forty-eight seats of the Senate will be held on March 3 at the parliament house Islamabad and the four provincial assemblies.

On Sunday, Election Commission of Pakistan had announced that at least 100 candidates have submitted their nomination papers so far for contesting the election on Senate vacant seats.

According to Election Commission officials, 17 candidates have filed their nomination papers from Punjab, 22 from Sindh, 30 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 25 from Balochistan and six from Islamabad.

A total of forty-eight senators will be elected this time including 12 each from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, while eleven each from Punjab and Sindh and two from Islamabad.

Pakistan records 1048 new infections, 26 coronavirus deaths

ISLAMABAD : Pakistan has recorded 26 more coronavirus-related deaths in past 24 hours, surging the overall death toll to 12,333.

According to the latest statistics of the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), the COVID-19 has claimed 26 more lives and 1,048 fresh infections were reported.In the past 24 hours, as many as 910 patients have recovered from the virus in a day and 1,680 patients are still in critical condition.

The total count of active cases is 25,747.

According to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), with fresh inclusion of the infections in the country the national tally of cases now currently stands at 564,077.

A total of 32,019 tests were conducted across the country during this period. Overall 525,997 people have recovered from the deadly disease so far while 8,466,117 samples have been tested thus far.
